EVOLVE 103 results: Matt Riddle vs. Daisuke Sekimoto

Additional notes by Arya Winter

Here are results from this afternoon’s EVOLVE 103 event in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The show started with the announcement that Travis Banks and Darby Allin are injured and would be replaced by Mark Haskins and Tracy Williams, respectively. Jarek 1:20 came out and said that since he injured Allin on Thursday at EVOLVE 102 that he should get the spot. Lenny Leonard said no, so Jarek vowed to injure more people.

– FIP champion Austin Theory defeated Keith Lee for the WWN championship in a title vs. title match

Good match up here with Lee overpowering Theory yet still being thrown around by Theory himself. Impressive strength by Theory being able to spin Lee in the three seconds around the world slam and his TKO. A late ref bump allowed Theory to hit a low blow and his finish to become the new WWN Champion and earn a spot at WWE Axxess tomorrow defending the title.

– Timothy Thatcher defeated Dominic Garrini (w/Stokely Hathaway)

Vicious sprint here that was won by Thatcher decisively after a butterfly suplex.

– AR Fox defeated Jason Kincaid, Chris Brookes, and DJZ in a four way bout

Jarek 1:20 ran out during DJZ’s entrance and attacked Kincaid, but Kincaid ran him off. Action all over the place with dives and creative multi person moves. Fox landed the fox catcher (450 splash) for the victory.

– Chris Dickinson defeated Mark Haskins

A gritty battle that had a lot of time, quality mat wrestling and brawling between these two vets. Dickinson targeted the leg and after a few submission attempts was able to force the tap with an Indian death lock.

– WALTER defeated Tracy Williams

The most physical match of the day, chops, and strikes by the huge hands of WALTER were taken by the valiant Williams. Tracy caught Walter a few times with big moves but it just wasn’t enough. WALTER wrapped Hot Sauce in a clutch for the submission

– Munenori Sawa defeated Jaka

Incredible hand speed by Sawa with his strikes despite all the time off he’s had in recent years. Jaka kept attacking and kept Sawa fighting out of submission attempts. It broke down in to a slug fest late with Sawa delivering hard punches to the skull of The Savage. Sawa was able to lock in the octopus hold and force the submission.

Post match attack by The End results in Catch Point getting back on the same page as Tracy Williams saved Stokely Hathaway and helped run off The End with Dickinson and Jaka

– EVOLVE Champion Matthew Riddle defeated Daisuke Sekimoto to retain the title

An absolute war here between these two men. Before the match Riddle declared that all EVOLVE title matches would be held with no rope breaks, which have been his specialty lately. This hoss fight had everything you would expect with chop exchanges, power moves and submission escapes thanks the the ropes. Sekimoto was winning the strike exchanges late so Riddle hit a flurry of knees and hammer fists which caused the ref stoppage to retain his title.

Sekimoto got a standing ovation from the crowd to close out the show.

WWE announcer Jerry Lawler hinted at Smackdown possibly going live when the show moves to USA Network in early 2016.

Lawler said in a new interview that WWE and USA plan to make the show bigger after finishing the current run on Syfy. Lawler quipped that part of that was switching him from the Raw to Smackdown announce team.

“It’s a very good possibility that in the near future, Smackdown may be live,” Lawler told The Sound Magazine’s Scott Yager in an interview at New York Comic Con.

If Smackdown goes live in 2016, the show would presumably be on Tuesday nights, unless WWE changes their production schedule.

– The remainder of the interview focused on Lawler’s relationship with Andy Kaufman and the back-story of how it came together.

Jeff Hardy brings United States title back to WWE SmackDown

The United States Championship is already back on SmackDown.

After defeating Jinder Mahal for the title on Raw last night, Hardy became the second wrestler to move to SmackDown in this year’s Superstar Shakeup. Hardys’ appearance tonight was the first time he’s been on SmackDown since 2009.

In his first match since joining the brand, Hardy defeated Shelton Benjamin with a Swanton Bomb. That came after Benjamin cut a heel promo where he said he never needed Chad Gable, claiming to be hacked when he praised Gable as a partner on Twitter. Benjamin said he talked to Paige and asked her to send him competition, which brought out Randy Orton before Hardy entered.

Hardy defending his US title against Mahal is scheduled for the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia on April 27th. Orton was supposed to face Mahal for the championship at Backlash on May 6th but could end up challenging Hardy instead.

The Miz was the first person to join SmackDown in this year’s Shakeup.

Week of 10/26 TV Viewership Break Down, with DVR’ing

WWE TV shows made up 90 percent of the TV wrestling pie for the Week of October 26, down from 92% the previous week. This was mainly due to ROH nearly doubling its TV audience and TNA rebounding from a season-low.

Also, WWE programming was down slightly to contribute to losing two percentage points. Included was a decline in Raw’s DVR viewership despite being the night after the Hell in a Cell PPV.

Overall Viewership – WWE Raw, WWE Smackdown, TNA Impact, ROH TV (Week of Oct. 26)

– Live Viewership Pie: 6.116 million viewers (up slightly from 6.019 million last week).

– Live & DVR Pie: 6.725 million viewers (up slightly from 6.675 million last week).

***

– WWE Raw (Monday, October 26): The post-PPV episode averaged 3.354 million live viewers over the course of three hours, essentially even with 3.356 million last week.

DVR viewership was down from last week, though, averaging 3.713 million live + DVR, down from 3.784 million last week.

Another interesting comparison is the second and third hours. The hours drew nearly identical viewership, but the third hour drew 415,000 DVR views compared to 352,000 in the second hour. It appears that many viewers fast-forwarded through the second hour to get to the third hour, presumably for the main event #1 contender match.

First Hour: 3.635 million live viewers (3.946 million with DVR
Second Hour: 3.213 million live viewers (3.565 million with DVR)
Third Hour: 3.214 million live viewers (3.629 million with DVR)

Overall, Raw made up 55 percent of the total TV wrestling viewership pie for the week.

– TNA Impact (Wednesday, Oct. 28): Impact drew 266,000 first-run viewers, essentially even with 264k last week.

Impact then drew 27,000 DVR viewers (vs. 17k last week) and 98,000 West Coast/replay viewers after ROH TV, which was also up from last week.

Impact’s total audience was 391,000 viewers, up from 344k last week. It was the most combined viewers in three weeks.

– ROH TV (Wednesday, Oct. 28): ROH drew its largest audience in a single timeslot on Destination America.

ROH drew 227,000 viewers in the 11:00 p.m. EST timeslot after Impact to bump up its share of the weekly wrestling pie to four percent.

– WWE Smackdown (Thursday, Oct. 29): Smackdown drew 2.171 million live viewers, down from 2.204 million last week.

DVR viewership was 223,000, up from 211k last week to make up some of the difference.

Smackdown’s total audience was 2.394 million, down slightly from 2.415 million last week.

WWE released the following statement to PWTorch seconds ago:

“WWE Survivor Series is currently scheduled as planned while we investigate the matter with federal, state and local authorities.”

The FBI released this statement to WSB in Atlanta, Ga.:

“The FBI is aware of reports of an alleged threat that includes an Atlanta, Georgia venue and event. While we take all threats seriously, we do not have specific or credible information of an attack at this time. We have, however, made the proper notifications as we continue to work closely with our law enforcement and private sector partners to keep our community safe.”

WWE stock prices climb to record high following TV rights rumors

After rumors surfaced Wednesday night that NBCUniversal wants to bring back Raw to USA Network at three times the current contract value, WWE’s stock value hit record highs Thursday.

As of 1 PM Eastern, the stock was trading at $50.21 a share, up from $43.60 at the close of business Wednesday and good for a near 15% increase. Earlier Thursday, they crested past $51 a share, their record high.

The company’s TV contract is up next year and the Hollywood Reporter reported that NBCU wants to bring back Raw for nearly three times what they currently receive while choosing to not renew SmackDown. Fox has been rumored to also be a suitor for WWE programming, opening up the possibility of bringing the Tuesday night show to Fox Sports One. They could still be interested in Raw for the Fox network depending on the cost.

WWE hasn’t commented publicly on any of the news.

Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel of Endeavor is negotiating both the WWE deal as well as the UFC TV contract.

The TNA Title series will not conclude in 2015, leaving TNA without a champion to close their run on Destination America.

TNA announced Wednesday that the semi-finals and finals of the TNA Title tournament will take place on the Pop TV debut on Tuesday, January 5.

This follows recent TNA Hvt. champion Ethan Carter III suggesting in a new interview that the tournament would conclude in December. ECIII heelishly boasted that he would end 2015 as TNA champion and kick off the Pop TV era as Hvt. champion.

“As far as my personal goals, I mean, winning the World Title Series, capping off the year (2015) being two-time unbeaten champion, opening the show January 5, live on Pop TV on Impact Wrestling as the World Heavyweight Champion and then holding it for the whole calendar year; that’s my goals,” Carter told The Rack Radio Show last week.

On Wednesday’s Impact episode, TNA set up the Final Four of the tournament – ECIII vs. Lashley on one side of the bracket and Matt Hardy vs. Eric Young on the other side of the bracket.

It sets up a potential ECIII vs. Hardy re-match for the TNA Title after Hardy won the title from Carter at Bound for Glory in October. That match also involved Drew Galloway in a three-way format.

BRACKET 1

ECIII beat D.J. Zema (12/2 Impact)
Davey Richards beat Bram (12/2 Impact)
ECIII beat Richards in the quarterfinals (12/9 Impact)
