Jinder Mahal has been the WWE Champion over on Smackdown ever since May of this year. Despite going up against Randy Orton in three straight pay-per-view matches, Jinder has managed to retain his WWE Championship each time, albeit mostly under dubious circumstances. Now that Orton as champion has been ruled out, it’s been announced that tonight’s Smackdown main event will see a “dream match” featuring John Cena taking on Shinsuke Nakamura for a chance to face the champion at SummerSlam later this month. If you think that John Cena is obviously going to just pin Nakamura and win his seventeenth title at SummerSlam, think again.
Yes, that’s right. According to a last-minute report from PWInsider, it appears that sources indicate that Shinsuke Nakamura is going to be defeating John Cena in tonight’s main event. This will allow Nakamura to earn himself a match for the WWE Championship against Jinder Mahal at the huge pay-per-view event in Brooklyn. Apparently this is the plan for tonight’s match, which has gone against a few past reports that have claimed that Cena would be challenging Mahal for the title at SummerSlam. For whatever reason, it appears that this is no longer (or never was) the plan for the pay-per-view, and “The King of Strong Style” will be going up against Mahal for the title instead.
It does seem a bit strange for Nakamura to receive a title shot this quickly. Due to his All-American persona that he has been portraying on television ever since he returned to WWE, John Cena has seemed like the ideal candidate to defeat Mahal for the title for some time now. Cena even had a brief confrontation with Jinder on last week’s episode of Smackdown. Despite all of this, it appears that Nakamura is currently penciled in to win tonight’s main event. No word on what John Cena will be doing on the SummerSlam pay-per-view later this month has been given just yet. We’ll find out who will challenge for the WWE Championship on Smackdown later tonight.
