More Commercials On iMPACT, Judas Mesias, Former WWE Talent In TNA, More

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

– There are more commercials now airing on TNA iMPACT. The company has decided to take iMPACT from a nine-segment show to an eleven-segment show. This will slightly shorten both the commercial breaks and the segments by 22%. The decision was made after TNA management felt like four minute commercial breaks were too long. Now the commercial breaks will be between three and three and a half minutes long.

– Judas Mesias was at the iMPACT tapings this past week to film vignettes. The current plan is for him to work a singles match against Abyss at Final Resolution on January 6th. If Mesias doesn’t return to television before then, the company will at least be airing the filmed vignettes.

– For those that have asked, Sylvan Grenier will not have a role in TNA beyond being the French announcer.

– As things stand right now there is said to be no interest within TNA in bringing in Chris Masters.

– The Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, South Carolina refused to let TNA announce the venue as the location of their upcoming Against All Odds pay-per-view until after WWE’s house show in the venue on November 25th. Speaking of Against All Odds, tickets officially went on sale for the event this morning.

Jordan says Lawrence Stroll has the ‘Midas touch’

Eddie Jordan believes Aston Martin F1 team owner Lawrence Stroll is currently “the smartest instrument” in F1 and a man who has “the Midas touch”.

Jordan’s original team, which was put on its rails in 1991 and managed by its founder until 2005, went through a multitude of iterations – Midland, Spyker and Force India – before it ended up in the trusty hands of Lawrence Stroll in the summer of 2018.

The Canadian billionaire has tackled F1 as a team owner with the same determination and flair that led to his massive success in the business world as a prominent investor in such well-known brands such as Tommy Hilfiger or Michael Kors.

After ensuring Racing Point’s stature as a top midfield contender – and a Grand Prix winner – in the past two years, Stroll is ready to take his team to the next level under the Aston Martin banner, which obviously implies championship ambitions for ‘Team Silverstone’.

“Never, ever rule out the father, Lawrence Stroll,” Jordan told website The Race.

“He has that Midas touch, everything he does he turns to gold. He is the smartest instrument in Formula 1 at the moment, without any question.”

While Stroll’s rise to power in F1 is perceived as mercurial by fans, the 61-year-old has been entrenched in the F1 paddock for years.

In 1992, Stroll sponsored Team Lotus through the Tommy Hilfiger brand and Pepe Jeans brands, while the Canadian and his Hong Kong partner Silas Chou later acquired centuries-old British jewelry company Asprey and Garrard, a Ferrari sponsor at the time.

“I’ve known Lawrence for a very long time,” said Jordan.

“He was extremely welcoming and friendly to me when the Jordan team first went to Canada. It was a long time ago, but I remember finishing fourth and fifth. And that was in our very early days and Lawrence was one of the first people around to congratulate us.

“I remember being in this house for dinner on occasions in ’91, ’92. So, he’s been a fan for a long time.

“He got a little bit of help with his dad, and I’m talking about a very modest amount of help, but he turned that around into five times the value – and then he invested that and that made 10 times the value.”

Initially perceived as the generous benefactor of his son Lance, who began his career in F1 with Williams in 2017, Stroll Snr has evolved to become one of the biggest players and opinion leaders in the F1 paddock, but also a genuine “revelation” according to Jordan.

“He started from something relatively small – more than what most people would have, but at the same time tiny compared to where he is now. I mean absolutely tiny,” added the Irishman.

“He has been a revelation, he’s one of the greatest entrepreneurial minds that you could get.

“Everything he does turns to gold, whether it’s Michael Kors, whether it’s Tommy Hilfiger, whether it’s the fragrance brand, whether it’s a jeans company. Everything that he does.

“And remember he’s come in, and he’s taken over, effectively, a team in administration or bankruptcy, call it what you like, with Force India. And they won a race at the end of last year.

“Who’d have ever thought that that could have happened? You have to give them absolutely massive credit.”

Stroll realized a major coup when he convinced four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel to join Aston Martin F1.

And while there are those who doubt the German’s ability to be successful with the team, Jordan is convinced Vettel’s vast knowledge will prove valuable, not unlike the precious baggage brought to Jordan Grand Prix by Damon Hill back in the day.

“The team has chosen Vettel because of the knowledge he has, as a four-time world champion,” he said.

“I can speak from experience, Hill coming to me wasn’t necessarily the quickest driver in the world, but he was hugely knowledgeable, hugely talented, and he had an ability to impart information and knowledge to us, to be able to build a far better car.

“I do believe that that’s where Vettel will be really strong. And I think the team will be a lot stronger as a result.”

UFC Sues Randy Couture For Breach Of Contract

Source: Las Vegas Review Journal

The strained relationship between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and its heavyweight champion Randy Couture has taken another bad turn — directly into a Las Vegas courtroom.

Lawyers for Zuffa, LLC, the UFC’s parent company, on Monday filed suit in Clark County District Court, alleging chiefly that Couture’s comments about the UFC and its senior management caused the business irreparable damage and that he is in breach of the contract he signed with the company in December 2006.

“We are alleging numerous intentional torts, which have caused Zuffa and the UFC significant harm,” attorney Donald J. Campbell said. “Based upon that harm we are seeking to address these matters before a court of law.”

The lawsuit seeks damages in excess of $10,000 and states that the amount of both compensatory and punitive damages would be proven at trial. It also seeks an injunction restraining Couture from participating in any way in any promotion competing against the UFC.

The lawsuit is the latest episode of discord between Couture and UFC President Dana White, who said he has considered Couture a friend for eight years.

“What’s really tough for me, to be honest, is we have been friends for a very long time,” White said. “The hard part is that he is not living up to his obligations. Captain America is not keeping his word.”

Couture is listed as the UFC heavyweight champion, even though the fighter and organization have been engaged in a public dispute that included his resignation from the company. An interim title match has been scheduled.

The tense relationship between Couture and the UFC, namely White and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, became public on Oct. 11 when Couture held a news conference at his Las Vegas gym. Couture detailed his frustrations with the company and announced he was resigning from the UFC.

Couture claimed Fertitta and White had lied to him; that the company paid “off-the-books” bonuses to fighters; that he never was paid a signing bonus that had been negotiated in his December 2006 contract; and that the company treated many of its athletes poorly.

Fertitta and White held their own news conference the following week, during which they addressed Couture’s allegations and produced copies of checks cashed by Couture, including the signing bonus. The checks showed the heavyweight to be making much more money than he had claimed.

In the months since, the battle of words has continued and the sides have been unable to work things out.

“I expect Randy to honor the obligations in his contract that he signed (a year ago). I tried to resolve it by talking to this guy that I’ve had a relationship with for eight years and was unsuccessful,” White said. “Now this thing’s in the hands of the justice system.”

Monday’s lawsuit claims Couture’s negative statements about the company constituted “injurious falsehood and trade disparagement,” that has led to significant financial losses for the UFC.

The lawsuit also alleges conspiracy, stating that several unnamed parties to be identified at a later date worked with Couture to intentionally inflict harm on the UFC.

According to the lawsuit, Couture is also in breach of a stipulation that prohibits him from engaging in “direct or indirect competition” with the UFC for a period of 12 months following the termination of his contract.

Thus, Couture’s sponsorship and promotion of a team in the International Fight League would be in direct violation of the stipulation. Currently, the IFL’s Web site lists Couture’s Xtreme Couture team taking on Mario Sperry’s World Class Fight Center at the IFL’s Feb. 29 card at the Orleans Arena.

A message left on Couture’s cell phone on Monday was not returned.

Ron Killings On His Way To WWE; Details On His Ring Name, Brand, more

Ron Killings is on his way to WWE. According to a report by Dave Meltzer in the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Killings has not finalized his contract with the company because he has to pass a physical and required drug test. However, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Killings will work in WWE under the name KWIK Ron Killings.

The hiring of Killings was the work of John Laurinaitis. It was Laurinaitis that led the negotiations for the deal as the creative team was not in on it because of problems between RAW creative team writer Brian Gewirtz and Killings. Apparently there was an incident that occurred between the two during a pre-tape segment during Killings’ first WWE stint. Gewirtz vocally expressed his displeasure with the company bringing Killings back.

Given Killings’ problems with Gewirtz it is very likely that he will end up on SmackDown or ECW, not RAW.

WWE Bans Camera Phones At Live Events, Sports Bars Stop Carrying WWE PPVs

Source: PWInsider.com

WWE has created two new policies that are intended to protect their product but may be turning fans away and eating into company profits.

— At last weekend’s Royal Rumble PPV, the company adopted a new policy that any fans caught taking photos or video with their cell phones at WWE events will be ejected from the building. WWE has had its staff specifically instruct building employees to be on the lookout for people using their cell phones during the events. According to live reports, many fans were were confronted at the PPV and threatened with ejection. Strangely enough, digital and film cameras are still allowed.

— WWE’s Pay-Per-View buyrates have been going downhill for months. A contributing factor to this trend is that the company has made it nearly impossible for sports bars to show their PPV events. WWE instructed cable and satellite providers to charge sports bars by the square foot if they want to carry WWE PPVs. As a result, the cost for these establishments to carry WWE PPVs has skyrocketed to over $5,000. By comparison, those same sports bars pay less than $1,000 to carry UFC PPVs.
