Afghan students crowdfund university fees for young mother after photo goes viral

Afghan farmer Jahantab Ahmadi sits on the ground, her baby resting in her lap, as she focuses on the university entrance exam she hopes will help her fulfil her dreams.

The powerful photo, taken by a professor at Nasir Khusraw private university in central Afghanistan, has gone viral after striking a chord in a country where most women are illiterate and treated as second-class citizens.

The picture has sparked an outpouring of admiration and offers of financial help for the 25-year-old mother of three.

"I don’t want to be deprived of my studies," Mrs Ahmadi, who comes from a remote farming village in Daikundi province where wheat, corn and potatoes provide a meagre income, told AFP in Kabul.

"I want to work outside the house. I want to become a doctor, someone who serves women in my community or society."

Mrs Ahmadi passed the exam after undertaking an arduous journey to reach the provincial capital Nili, which took two hours on foot through mountains and nine hours in public transport on a bumpy road.

An online GoFundMe campaign launched by the Afghan Youth Association to help pay for her university fees has so far raised more than $14,000 – a fortune in a country where about 39 percent of the population lives in poverty.

Mrs Ahmadi appears a little bemused by the attention triggered by the photo of her cradling baby Khizran during the exam last month, which she only found out about later.

"My friends in the village told me: ‘You have been photographed,’ she said, adding that she had been concentrating so hard on the paper she didn’t notice her picture was being taken.

At the beginning of the test, which was held outdoors, Mrs Ahmadi sat at a desk with Khizran in her lap.

But the infant had an ear ache and would not stop crying. To keep her quiet and not disturb others, Mrs Ahmadi sat on the ground in the shade of another person, and kept writing.

"I had to concentrate on the baby and do the paper," she said.

Mrs Ahmadi’s story has resonated with social media users across the country, who have praised her determination to be educated.

"You are a true world champion, you have shown that a Hazara girl can do anything in any conditions or circumstances," Nazar Hussein Akbari wrote on Facebook, referring to the fact Mrs Ahmadi is part of the persecuted Hazara ethnic group.

Another user posted: "I hope this hard-working woman reaches her goals."

Afghan women’s rights activist Zahra Yagana was also impressed. She contacted Mrs Ahmadi and convinced her to come to Kabul to study.

The family is staying with Yagana while she helps Mrs Ahmadi get into a private university in the Afghan capital.

"If she had to study in Daikundi it would be difficult for her," Ms Yagana told AFP.

"The standard of education is low. There is no student hostel in Daikundi and she would have to live in a rented house.

"We will give her a house (in Kabul). There are many friends who have promised to help her. We are trying to find a job for her husband and also raise money for her children to go to school."

For Mrs Ahmadi, this would be the fulfilment of her dreams.

"My life goal was to get admitted into university," said Mrs Ahmadi, who finished high school after she got married at the age of 18.

"But due to our poor economic situation and poverty I could not afford to study for three or four years."

Afghanistan’s general literacy rate is one of the lowest in the world, just 36 percent, according to official figures. It is much lower for women.

"I don’t want to be left behind," she said.

Elias Discusses his NXT Run, Mark Henry on a Hulk Hogan Return

Elias has managed to achieve a great deal of success for himself ever since joining the main roster. He is currently involved in high-profile feuds with John Cena and Braun Strowman at the moment, and he also will be competing in the men’s Elimination Chamber match this Sunday night. His “Drifter” gimmick has also been praised by most fans ever since he joined Monday Night Raw last year, however, fans of NXT will likely acknowledge that his time in the developmental brand was not met with as much success. Elias’ unique character was not well received during his time in NXT and some were even surprised to see him get called up to Raw at all last year.
During an appearance on Edge and Christian’s Pod of Awesomeness podcast, Elias addressed his NXT run and why he believes that it did not work in Full Sail University. “The Drifter” stated on the show that he believes that the character was simply one that would translate better on the main roster than in the smaller settings that NXT provides. “Triple H has told me specifically from the very first time when he saw me, he said that it would be a better main roster character than NXT. It never really clicked with the NXT audience the way it has, (and) the way I see it, I took my live event act in NXT and brought it to the main roster.” said Elias. Rather than continue his shtick until fans lose interest in the character, Elias said that he definitely is working on ways to continue evolving his gimmick.
Hulk Hogan has mostly remained away from professional wrestling altogether ever since WWE decided to sever ties with him due to racist comments that were discovered within his leaked sex tape. The company has remained committed to their stance on Hogan ever since, but Hogan himself has recently said that he would love to come back to WWE. TMZ just recently caught up with veteran WWE Superstar Mark Henry and asked him if he believed if Hogan should be brought back. Henry stated that he would have no problem with Hogan coming back as long as “The Hulkster” provided a sincere apology to all of the African American wrestlers currently on the WWE roster.

Dana White Fans Flames Of Brock Lesnar To UFC Rumors

Source: WrestlingNews
We are just a couple weeks away from WrestleMania and Brock Lesnar is scheduled to defend the WWE Universal Championship in the main event but that’s not the only news surrounding him right now. The Lesnar to UFC rumors have picked up again and Dana White’s latest Twitter post is going to get a lot of people talking.
White posted a photo of himself with Lesnar, who is on the west coast this weekend because he will be in Los Angeles for Raw. Lesnar had previously shut the door on a possible UFC return but has seemingly had a change of heart in recent months. There was talk of a Lesnar vs. Jon Jones dream fight but that was put on ice when he was suspended after testing positive for turinabol after his fight with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.

Jones will fight again in 2018. If that is true, then the Lesnar vs. Jones match could happen later this year. White said that he spoke with Jones recently and it was the first time they had spoken since the failed drug test
Lesnar’s WWE deal expires sometime after WrestleMania but he would have to put his name back into the USADA drug testing pool so he can complete the remaining 6 months of his drug suspension.

Rey Mysterio Reportedly Suffers Injury During Indy Show

This is terrible timing as rumors started to really amp up about a possible WWE return for Rey Mysterio. Because he was reportedly injured during an indie wrestling event for Northeast Wrestling in Waterbury, Connecticut on Saturday night.

The Wrestling Observer website reports it all went down during a tag match with Flip Gordon against Joey Mercury and Caleb Konley. Mysterio is believed to have suffered a left bicep tear as many who saw him said there was a massive amount of swelling but official confirmation has yet to be released on the matter.

During the match, Mysterio apparently knew something was wrong and told Mercury who was ready to alter the finish but Rey Rey shifted the match’s momentum into a 6-1-9 and then he hit a top rope splash on Konley to pick up the win for his team.

New Matches Confirmed for WrestleMania, Stat on Orton’s Title Win

Last night was WWE’s Fastlane pay-per-view featuring members of the Smackdown roster. Not only was it the company’s final brand-exclusive pay-per-view, but it was also the final main roster pay-per-view before WrestleMania takes place in April. As such, a few new matches for the event were confirmed during the event. AJ Styles retained his WWE Championship in the six pack challenge main event, so he will now be officially defending his title against Royal Rumble winner Shinsuke Nakamura at WrestleMania in New Orleans. The match marks the first singles match between the two wrestlers since their critically-acclaimed match at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 10 event.

The Fastlane show also featured a match that saw Charlotte Flair retain the Smackdown Women’s Championship over Ruby Riott. After winning the match, Raw Superstar Asuka made a surprise appearance and a title match between herself and Flair was officially announced by WWE. After winning the women’s Royal Rumble match, Asuka was given the chance to choose which champion she wanted to face at WrestleMania, but she held off on making her decision. WWE had been teasing that she would face Alexa Bliss for her title at the show, but that was all just a smokescreen. WrestleMania takes place on April 8th, 2018 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

SHE’S MADE HER DECISION.

Randy Orton has wrestled for WWE for a number of years and he has experienced a great deal of success during his tenure with the company. Orton has won multiple championships in WWE over the years, and he just recently defeated Bobby Roode to win the United States Championship during last night’s Fastlane pay-per-view. Interestingly enough, this was actually a major victory for Orton as he has now managed to win every single championship that he is eligible to compete for in the company. The announcers were sure to point out this huge accomplishment after Orton emerged as the winner of the title match. Orton will now likely head into WrestleMania this April as the United States Champion.

Planned WrestleMania Match Cancelled, Matt Hardy & Washington

WrestleMania is set to feature plenty of matches this year once again, but it seems that one of the matches that had been planned for the event will no longer be taking place. After bringing up the fact that he has never had a singles match at WrestleMania before, it was reported that Smackdown wrestler Dolph Ziggler would finally get his singles match on “The Grandest Stage of Them All.” His opponent for the show was rumored to be none other than Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon. McMahon has had matches against the likes of The Undertaker and AJ Styles since returning to the company, so it seemed like a match against Ziggler was a real possibility for this year.
It now appears that the match will not be taking place at WrestleMania this April after all. After announcing that he is stepping down as Smackdown Commissioner, Shane McMahon announced a match between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens for WrestleMania. The two friends then viciously attacked McMahon, leading fans to assume that he will be returning soon to face them at WrestleMania. Brad Shepard of Bodyslam.net has indeed confirmed that WWE has moved on from the planned match between McMahon and Ziggler. Why WWE will no longer be going through with the match was not revealed, but it seems more likely now that McMahon will continue to feud with Zayn and Owens leading into WrestleMania.
“Woken” Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt’s feud is set to culminate on Raw this Monday night in what promises to be a unique match. For the first time since the original “Broken” gimmick in Impact Wrestling, Hardy will be hosting his match from The Hardy Compound in what is being called “The Ultimate Deletion.” With so much being on the line in the match, Matt Hardy has just sought the advice of his giraffe George Washington. Located in Hardy’s personal zoo, Washington appears to have given him all of the guidance that he needs for his upcoming match against Wyatt. The Ultimate Deletion match will finally be taking place during Monday Night Raw tomorrow night.

Jinder Mahal returns to action on WWE Raw

Jinder Mahal was back in action on tonight’s episode of Raw.

In his first match in more than 10 months, Mahal defeated Akira Tozawa on tonight’s show. Mahal got a dominant win in his return. He overpowered Tozawa at the start, threw him into the LED board and a barricade on the outside, and got the win after hitting a Samoan drop and the Khallas.

Mahal underwent surgery in June 2019 to repair a ruptured patellar tendon. He wrote at the time: “On the mend. Ruptured my Patella Tendon in Denver Colorado June 15 in a match against @aliwwe. Happy to say surgery went well, and my knee was better than expected. This comeback is going to be legendary.”

Mahal said earlier this month that he was cleared and waiting to return.

While out of action, Mahal switched brands when he was drafted to Raw last October.

Mahal is a former WWE Champion, United States Champion, and two-time 24/7 Champion. His WWE title reign lasted for nearly six months in 2017.

Florida deeming WWE 'essential' draws criticism, political ties examined

This post was updated at 11:15 PM Eastern.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to deem “professional sports and media production with a national audience” as essential businesses, clearing the path for WWE, AEW, and UFC to run events, drew criticism Tuesday with Linda McMahon coming into focus.

WWE resumed their regular weekly TV schedule at the Orlando, FL, Performance Center Monday, just three days after Vince McMahon changed his mind on the doorstep of a multi-day taping that would have covered the company for weeks.

Questions were raised at how they were able to make that decision given the state’s previous order that only essential businesses remain open. On Monday, that was answered as it was revealed during a Monday press conference with Orange Country Mayor Jerry Demings that WWE was now considered essential per the governor’s office.

“With some conversation with the governor’s office regarding the governor’s order, they were deemed an essential business. And so, therefore, they were allowed to remain open,” he said.

The state government issued an executive order on April 9th that all professional sports could return to business if the location was closed to the public. Coverage of the decision was featured in a variety of news outlets that don’t normally cover wrestling like CNBC, The Guardian, USA Today, and more.

Stephanie Coueignoux and Jon Alba of Central Florida’s Spectrum News 13 performed a further investigation into the situation Tuesday, noting that the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the PC in both March and April, advising WWE they were not in compliance with the previously existing order and would have to close down.

However, Spectrum News 13, providing a timeline, found that the change of heart came on the same day as a pro-President Donald Trump super PAC (political action committee) announced that they were going to spend $18.5 million in both the Tampa and Orlando markets. That super PAC is headed up by Linda McMahon, Vince McMahon’s wife, and the former head of Trump’s Small Business Administration. DeSantis has been known as an ally of Trump, a WWE Hall-of-Famer and friends with Vince.

Vince’s decision to resume live WWE programming at the PC happened the next day.

A spokesperson for the super PAC told ABC News that the connection was an example of “looking to connect some sort of dots that simply don’t exist” and that the $18.5 million ad buy was planned more than a week before the updated executive order was issues.

In a statement to Spectrum 13, DeSantis’ office said WWE was critical to Florida’s economy and the employees at those locations benefit. WWE was set to hold WrestleMania in Tampa this year, generating millions for the local economy, before having to move it to the PC. No return date was announced as next year’s event is scheduled for Los Angeles, CA.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump said at a press conference that Vince and UFC president Dana White would join a group of sports commissioners and dozens of other business leaders in a variety of industries in helping figure out how to get things “re-opened” in the country.
