Mysterio, Henry, & Khali Now Confirmed for Greatest Royal Rumble

WWE will be hosting a very unique show this Friday with The Greatest Royal Rumble set to take place in Saudi Arabia. WWE has loaded the card with a ton of several interesting matches, including seven title matches, a bout between Triple H and John Cena, and another match between Rusev and The Undertaker. WWE is going all in with this show, but the crown jewel of the event this week will be the first-ever 50-man Royal Rumble match. Given that the match will require 50 participants, it makes sense that the match would feature a ton of names from all over the WWE landscape, but a few of the surprise entrants planned for the Greatest Royal Rumble match have just been confirmed.

BREAKING: The @WWE #Cruiserweight Championship match is set for #WWEGRR, PLUS @reymysterio @shanemcmahon @RandyOrton @TheMarkHenry @FightOwensFight & The #GreatKhali are confirmed for the 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match this Friday! https://t.co/ujHcCFk4dG
— WWE (@WWE) April 25, 2018

It has been rumored for a while now that Rey Mysterio is currently in the midst of contract negotiations with WWE and could be coming back to the company at any time. WWE has just announced that Mysterio will be back for at least one night when he competes in the 50-man Royal Rumble match on Friday. Mysterio made a one-off return to WWE earlier this year when he competed in the traditional 30-man Royal Rumble match back in January. Although Mysterio did not win the match, he impressed the fans by being among the last competitors eliminated from the match. Get ready to see Mysterio back in a WWE ring once again when he competes in Saudi Arabia later this week.

Another huge name who has just been confirmed to participate in the Royal Rumble match this Friday is Mark Henry. Mark Henry dominated the landscape in WWE for two decades before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame earlier this month. Although Henry stated that he was retired from the ring during his Hall of Fame speech, it looks like Henry has reversed his stance and will be wrestling again in the 50-man Royal Rumble match. WWE has also announced that The Great Khali will also be coming back to WWE for one night to compete in the match. 50 men will all compete in the biggest Royal Rumble match in WWE history at the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27th.

Mike Kanellis Gets Some Good News Last Night on RAW

Last night on RAW, Mike Rome gave some good news to Mike Kanellis that he did not break the record for the quickest Royal Rumble elimination at Friday’s Greatest Royal Rumble Event in Saudi Arabia. As previously reported, 2018 WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry easily eliminated Kanellis as he came to the ring. The previous record was set by Santino Marella in 2009 with 1.9 seconds. Rome says that Kanellis was in the match for 2.49 seconds. Kanellis somehow sees this as being on the same level as Daniel Bryan because he broke the record for longest Rumble run at 1 hour and 16 minutes, breaking Rey Mysterio’s 2006 record of 1 hour, 2 minutes & 12 seconds. Lucha Underground July 1 TV results and recap: Prince Puma vs. Chavo Guerrero, Alberto El Patron

By Jeremy Peeples, WrestlingObserver.com

Last week, Sexy Star and Super Fly had a sloppy and sometimes scary match that Fly won. Aerostar won a medallion in a giant multi-man match, and Mil Muertes demolished Drago to become the number one contender to the Lucha Underground Title. As a result, he’ll receive a title shot at UltimaLucha. This week’s show begins with a recap of Chavo turning his back on Black Lotus and siding with Dario Cueto. The Texano vs. Daivari feud is recapped, followed by Catrina threatening Cueto to ensure that Mil got a shot at the LU title.

Cueto meets with Chavo in his office and Chavo asks for a request – he wants a title shot for giving him Black Lotus. Cueto makes it a no DQ match so the Crew can get involved and he also wants Konnan banned, so Cueto says if Konnan gets involved, Chavo wins the title. Mexican Dubwiser plays us in while Daivari is in the ring with Big Ryck. Striker puts Texano over as a young man who made history by being the youngest AAA champion ever.

Daivari vs. Texano

Texano backdrops Daivari, who hides behind Ryck. Daivari hits him with punches in the corner, while Texano counters with giant overhand chops. Ryck trips Texano and Daivari clips the knee. Daivari attacks the knee and gets 2. Vamp ponders why the Globetrotters aren’t in the NBA Title picture and Striker says that they aren’t in the NBA while Daivari gets a figure four. Texano reverses it, but Daivari attacks him in the corner with knee strikes. Daivari X factors his way out of a powerbomb for 2. Texano ducks a bullrope shot from Ryack and hits a seated powerbomb for the win!

Puma works out and Konnan tells him that having the deck stacked against Puma won’t hurt him. Chavo isn’t a champion, but Puma is. Catrina teleports in and tells Puma that Muertes will destroy Puma and implies that Konnan will be taken out too. We get a cool Muertes vs. Puma staredown and Konnan tells Puma to avoid letting her get into his head.

Back in the Temple, Konnan talks to someone about how Mexico needs to pay Chavo back for what he did to Blue Demon Jr and okays an attack since he can’t be there. Hernandez comes out to face Drago, who is a huge babyface now thanks to his return from exile.

Hernandez vs. Drago

Vamp loves Drago wearing black. Hernandez tries to overpower him, but he eats some kicks and clubbering on the back. Drago gets a springboard dropkick and a senton before kicking his chest in. Striker talks about Hernandez winning 20 major titles and Vamp wants proof, and Striker can’t offer any. Vamp talks about being KOed by a potato shot from Hernandez in Puerto Rico years ago. Hernandez snapmares him down for a neck vice submission. Train Wreck backbreaker hits for 2. Hernandez gets a one-armed powerslam-positioned gutbuster for 2. Drago comes back with kicks, including corner dropkicks. Hernandez goes up top, but gets stopped and eats a rana for 2.

Drago low-bridges Hernandez and hits a flip dive. Drago gets a springboard flip diving kick to the floor, which Vamp says proves that potatoes make for a great side with salad. Drago eats a Border Toss on the apron. Hernandez intimidates a “fan” and takes his belt off to whip Drago. Drago gets choked and Hernandez loses via DQ after they talk about Cueto wanting things to get a bit crazier before UltimaLucha. Hernandez says the dumbass fans don’t realize that dragons aren’t real and Drago’s just a man whose ass just got whipped. If anyone has a problem with that, he’ll kick their asses too.

Chavo shadow boxes backstage and Catrina tells him that a victory means his celebration will be short-lived. No matter what, Mil Muertes will destroy the champion. Chavo disrespects him and Muertes screams. Marty the Moth sniffs Melissa Santos and gets a “creeper” chant. Alberto comes down with the AAA Title and a huge “El Patron” chant. Alberto is in new blue and gold gear that looks slick.

Marty the Moth vs. Alberto El Patron

Alberto gets a shove into the corner and kicks away at him too. More kicks and punches land in the corner. Armbar codebreaker hits and the armbar is locked on. Alberto in squash match form is awesome, and the new color scheme looks sharp. A massive “El Patron” chant breaks out while Alberto grabs the mic. Alberto calls out Johnny Mundo and thanks for the wake-up call as it woke up something inside of him. He’s got a sadistic side and that’s what he’ll bring at UltimaLucha. Alberto is fantastic in squash matches and in long-form stuff too. Vamp talks about the main event and loves the anti-Konnan stip.

Melissa Santos brings us in and Chavo comes down with The Crew. Vamp says that Chavo isn’t riding on his family’s coat tails and could be champion. Vamp asks what’s happened to Bael since he’s been missing for weeks. Striker offers no update on him after his meeting with Matanza. Puma comes down with Konnan. Santos recaps the stipulation involving “Conan” while a fan calls Cueto a madman.

Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma vs. Chavo Guerrero

Mid-ring, they flip around a bit off a collar and elbow tie-up. Chavo gets a side headlock mid-ring, but eats an armdrag and an armbar. Puma flips over Chavo, and The Crew attacks with the kendo stick and a cheapshot. Puma sends the goons into each other, but eats a double stomp/DDT combo. Texano comes down as Konnan’s enforcer and runs wild on the goons. 630 hits and Puma wins. Well, this was the most nothing Lucha Underground Title match ever. Texano says that Mexico’s coming to Chavo, while Striker says that Chavo should be commended for doing whatever he could to “Guerrero” the title.

The show closes with skyline shots taking us to the locker room. Blue Demon Jr. comes in and says he doesn’t fight those who are already hurt. Chavo talks smack and gets slammed into lockers over and over. Chavo smiles because he apparently got what he wanted.

Reason Why Styles/Nakamura Backlash Match Wasn’t Main Event, Cass

It was previously reported that the AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura Match for the WWE Title was originally pencilled in as the main event of last Sunday night’s WWE Backlash PPV. The reason that this was switched up and the match did not end the show is because of the way the finish was booked. With the fact that neither wrestler was able to get up before the referee’s ten count, WWE did not want to end the PPV on that note and so the order of matches was shuffled around.
According to Dave Meltzer in a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Big Cass has the look and the body type that WWE likes and so they will likely continue to push him over and over again even if he fails to get over with the audience.

Ask The Observer: Undertaker, Terry Funk, Dusty Rhodes, highbrow pro wrestling

By David Parker, Wrestling Observer

Here is the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio mailbag where we post some of the questions asked during weekly Observer audio shows. Want to know if something’s been asked? These will be a good place to start. If you want to hear more questions and insight from Observer audio several times a week, subscribe now!

Questions are asked by Bryan Alvarez or Mike Sempervive and are in bold, and primarily answered by Dave Meltzer unless otherwise noted.

How much did Undertaker changing to the American Badass gimmick affect his drawing power? How did Taker and Vince view the gimmick change? Do you think turning him back was overdue?

DM: Turning him back was something they had to do. The thing was that I think they felt that the supernatural Undertaker had run its course, and they tried to make him into a real person, but the thing is that the people really did not want Undertaker as a real person. They wanted him as a supernatural. I thought the Badass gimmick was kinda of a cool gimmick.

MS: Yeah, I thought it was the right place at the right time (inaudible).

DM: People wanted the old Undertaker back very quickly. Not right away, but very quickly. The Badass gimmick, had he done it now and not turned back, I don’t think Undertaker would’ve had anywhere near the aura that he had the last ten years or so. Did it hurt his drawing power? Yes, I think it did. He became one of the guys more than he was when he was Undertaker with the other (gimmick).

I read Terry Funk attacked Dusty Rhodes..

DM: Okay, this is the Dusty Rhodes-Harley Race world title match in Orlando, where Dusty had lost the title, so this is a true story.

…Terry Funk had attacked Dusty Rhodes before the match and broke his arm (DM: Yes.). Dusty was given the option of not (wrestling), but because he owed it to the fans, he wrestled (DM: Yes.) Dusty lost the title when he backdropped Harley Race over the top rope and got DQ’ed.

DM: Yes, that is what happened. They changed the world title not just (by) a broken arm by Terry Funk, but in fact it was a title can change hands on a DQ finish. They did not publicize the title can change hands on a DQ finish outside of when the clip was shown in Florida because the rest of the NWA really didn’t like the idea that (they) did a DQ finish in a world title change, so nobody talked about it, but in fact that is what happened.

MS: I can understand Sam Muchnick. You’re getting paid, or you have a reason for doing this, and they approve it, and it’s okay, but it’s up to the local promoter to come up with a finish. WIth that, I’m assuming all of that was to protect Dusty Rhodes. You have all of this…

DM: Yeah. Dusty Rhodes was the superhero, and the deal was that they had gone so long with Dusty challenging that Eddie Graham just…they didn’t have the approval to put the belt on Dusty, but Eddie Graham got whatever it is permission. Eddie Graham was a power broker anyway and was like, “Look. We (have) had him chase the title for four years now, and people were just starting to get tired of it.” It wasn’t working anymore. They had seen him challenge him how many times in all (of) these cities, so it was like he’s just gotta win, but the problem is if you win and lose it a week later, it’s better off not even doing it because then people go, “Oh man. We waited all (of) this time, and then he went and blew it.”

So they created this scenario where they put so many layers on it: the broken arm, the DQ, the fact that he still wrestled that afternoon. They had this whole thing to where it was the idea that the odds were just too great, and you cannot expect Dusty to have retained in that situation, and even then, Harley couldn’t beat him. It was a freaking fluke-ass thing with the idea that then people would pay and now that Dusty could beat Harley in the rematch. So that’s why it was done, but outside of Florida, the idea that you changed the world title on a DQ in that era. Munchnik still had his promotion, but he was not running the NWA. This is 1979, and Munchnik had stopped booking the champion in about 1975, but had it been Munchnik….

MS: (Inaudible) then who was the…

DM: Jim Barnett was the booker, and Barnett let anyone do whatever they wanted, which a lot of people were very negative. The promoters liked Barnett because he didn’t say, “Hey, you’re doing DQ’s every night. Our champion needs to win.”

MS: Well, I’ll say this: if they would’ve used that from Eddie Graham as a template for Kerry Von Erich and Tommy Rich and other people that had these very short reigns or did it like if Steve Rickard, “Look, here’s the deal. If you feel as though you want to change your championship, technically, we can’t stop you, but if the media finds out about it, we’ll fine you some huge amount, but (inaudible).”

DM: Yeah, but how can you do that? They did the thing in New Zealand and Signapore in 1984, I think.

MS: Yeah, for Rickard, but if they had at least a template of “Look, we don’t approve of this, but if you’re going to do it, do it in a way where it doesn’t look stupid,” where again because Tommy Rich in five days, that ended up just hurting him.

DM: I thought that hurt him greatly.

MS: Yeah, big time there. The Kerry Von Erich thing was if the story was told where he was attacked and there was a reason he lost it instead of just he finally makes this struggle, he wins it, and then now what, which is what seemed to happen after that.

DM: Yeah, three weeks later. I lived in Dallas when that happened, and they went in there and they said it was a sumo referee, which it wasn’t, and he got screwed by a bad decision, but Flair and Kerry was still a good card afterwards, but I know the one where I really knew it was like when Flair and Kerry worked the Christmas show in 1984, which was the big rematch coming off the stadium where they did the 32,000, and they did 15,000.

Now, that sounds really good, but then, I remember thinking, “Man, how do you not sell out and turn people away?” because I was going to Reunion Christmas the year before; I had already moved back by then, but I went to Reunion Christmas the year before, and that thing was sold out so far in advance, and that was with Flair and David, and Thanksgiving, without even Flair on the card, when it sold out and all of those people were turned away, so the fact that you would have Flair and Kerry, which is the biggest match possible, and you didn’t sell out, that told me that the edge was off, and it was.

Has any company ever tried to promote a wrestling product aimed at what would be perceived as a highbrow demographic? If not, is there any reason why this hasn’t been done, (presenting) stories more complex that adults would find appealing or even present wrestling as a legitmate sport, as they do in Japan?

DM: A lot of guys in the old days. Florida and St. Louis certainly.

MS: Yeah, I was gonna say. St. Louis was the epitome of that when it came to nicknames, moves, and all (of) that stuff. They seemed to be…

DM: St. Louis and All Japan were very similar. They (were) not identical by any means, but there (were) similarities between the two of them. I can’t say St. Louis ever tried to promote highbrow wrestling, but they very much tried not to insult their audience, and they really tried not to lie to their audience. That was a big one. You had to lie, because they would never admit wrestling wasn’t real in those days, but it was always like, “Don’t lie to your audience,” and when it came to substitutions…sometimes it frustrates me, because I will look and of course being friends with Larry Matysik and everything, I know how they were doing stuff, and the way they booked and everything, they did not book with the idea their audience was a lowbrow audience. I remember the thing was “We were a B audience. Not a C audience, a B audience, but not an A audience either,” so that’s what they tried. They definitely in the original Wrestling at the Chase, where they were at the Corasan room, that was as close to an A audience as wresting ever got in this country.

If you ever watched the clips, it was like a ballroom with a thousand people for the TV tapings. The big shows were still at the arena, but that was suit and tie and fancy dresses, and it really was. If you ever see the tapes, and some of them exist, if you go up, I’ll give you one to look for: it’s Pat O’Connor against Lorenzo Parente. which is also a hell of a match, you’ll really get a kick out of how great Pat O’Connor and Lorenzo Parente were.

I know it’s on the Internet because (when) Lorenzo Parente died, I watched the match; look at the audience and Joe Garagiola doing the announcing, who was a very famous sportscaster and ended up being more famous when he left, but even then he was a pretty highbrow guy because he was a broadcaster for the (St. Louis) Cardinals at the time and a famous baseball player. Not a good baseball player, but famous because of his personality.

UFC Fight Night Nashville: Observer Picks & Preview for Glover Teixeira vs. Ovince St. Preux

Like many, I could use a free weekend away from combat sports and this show closes a hellacious stretch of UFC events this summer. While there’s the usual flotsam and jetsam on the show, the top three fights should send the fans home happy and give us some interesting next bouts for the winners.

Get a quick preview and so much more in this week’s Josh Nason’s Punch-Out featuring special guest and UFC light heavyweight “Filthy” Tom Lawlor.

> Glover Teixeira (22-4) vs. Ovince St. Preux

Light Heavyweights

After finally making it to the UFC, Teixeira arrived with a lot of buzz and won his first five with four finishes to earn a title shot against then-champion Jon Jones. Then, Jones dominated him for five rounds and he looked listless in a decision loss to current Bellator fighter Phil Davis. Fights against Rashad Evans and Alex Gustafsson fell through and he now gets a crack at the fast-rising OSP.

OSP will fight in front of his hometown crowd (well, Knoxville anyway) and will be looking to extend a two-fight win streak. After a horrendously boring decision loss to Ryan Bader a year ago, he earned back to back first round TKO wins over Shogun Rua and Patrick Cummins. He’s 6-1 in the UFC and has shown a propensity to finish guys on the ground or via the fists. Do we have the next top title contender on our hands?

Teixeira: FRB, Sawyer, Encarnacao, Sempervive
OSP (slight favorite): Nason, Pollock, Juon, Bix, Meltzer

> Michael Johnson (16-8) vs. Beneil Dariush (11-1)

Lightweights

Johnson is fast rising up the ranks of interesting lightweights amid a four-fight win streak that features victories over Edson Barboza, Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, and Melvin Guillard. He’s looked completely different since a two fight losing streak a few years back, and with a win here, he has earned an opportunity against a top 5 opponent.

The 26-year-old Dariush is 5-1 in his UFC career and is riding a four fight win streak of his own. After submitting Daron Cruickshank, Dariush came back on a month’s notice to beat former lightweight contender Jim Miller by decision in April. He could make a case for a top 5 opponent with a win here as well.

The Iranian has looked great, Johnson has looked great, and this fight will tell us a lot about what’s next for both guys.

Johnson (slight favorite): Nason, FRB, Pollock, Encarnacao, Juon, Sempervive, Meltzer
Dariush: Sawyer, Bix

> Derek Brunson (13-3) vs. Sam Alvey (26-6-0-1)

Middleweights

The 31-year-old Brunson has looked great since coming to the UFC in the Strikeforce merger, going 4-1. Since getting TKO’d by Yoel Romero, Brunson has beat Lorenz Larkin and took just 36 seconds to dispatch Ed Herman by TKO in January. He also shares a birthday with yours truly.

Since losing to Tom Watson by bland decision, Alvey has won three straight by first round T/KO which makes this a very fun fight. All three of those Alvey victories were abroad, so in this U.S.-based tilt, we’ll see if the passport punching makes the difference.

Brunson (favorite): Nason, FRB, Sawyer, Pollock, Encarnacao, Juon, Sempervive, Meltzer

Alvey: Bix

> Chris Camozzi (21-10) vs. Tom Watson (17-8)

Middleweights

After being cut by the UFC, the 28-year-old Camozzi was a last second replacement/sacrifice to Jacare Souza in April. Despite winning two outside the Octagon, Camozzi has lost his last five in the UFC. Ugh. Watson is just 2-4 in the UFC, and was last seen being decisioned by Rafael Natal earlier this year. Man, this loser leaves the UFC fight is hot garbage, isn’t it?

Camozzi (slight favorite): FRB, Sawyer, Pollock, Encarnacao, Juon, Sempervive, Bix, Meltzer
Watson: Nason

> Sara McMann (8-2) vs. Amanda Nunes (10-4)
Bantamweights

In McMann’s two flights closest to the UFC sun, she lasted 66 seconds with Ronda Rousey and got roundly defeated by Miesha Tate. In the middle of that, she edged Lauren Murphy in a split decision. At age 34, we may have seen the best of her in the UFC. She fights Nunes who is 3-1 in the UFC with her last win coming over former Zuffa employee Shayna Baszler with her lone defeat coming against Cat Zingano.

McMann (favorite): Nason, FRB, Sawyer, Pollock, Encarnacao, Juon, Sempervive, Bix, Meltzer
