Presnel Kimpembe to miss six weeks with hamstring injury

Paris Saint-Germain have announced this morning that Presnel Kimpembe will be out of action for the next six weeks as a result of a hamstring injury, with an update to come in eight days.

The centre-back picked up the injury in the 1-0 win over Brest this past weekend, and will miss out on a total of eight games over a busy period for the Ligue 1 champions which begins on Wednesday with a trip to Haifa for their second Champions League game of the season.

Among the domestic matches the Frenchman will include the game against Lyon next Sunday as well as the first Classique of the season on October 16. He will also be absent for the next international break, with France due to play against Austria and Denmark on September 22 and 25 respectively.

Keylor Navas will also be absent for tomorrow’s match with lower back, while midfielder Renato Sanches will remain in the treatment room as well due to an adductor issue.

Confident Rodda on Road to Recovery with Force

Wallabies lock Izack Rodda finally feels the confidence returning to go full-tilt for the Western Force after a painstaking recovery from a foot injury. The towering forward’s second trial game of the pre-season on Thursday night in Brisbane was the final tick that he’ll be there for the kick-off of Super Rugby Pacific. The Force have plenty still to find on the training paddock after a disappointing 48-38 loss to the much-improved Fijian Drua in perfect conditions at Wests Rugby Club. Coming on top of a 45-10 trial loss to the Queensland Reds, the Force are well short of where they need to be for Round One against the Melbourne Rebels at Perth’s HBF Park on February 25. The broader view was Rodda playing nearly 50 minutes without incident, dominating the lineouts and two surges in the opening minutes to quickly get involved. His right foot still carries two screws from the surgery that wiped out any involvement in the Wallabies’ 14 Tests last year. “It’s getting there. It’s great to have had two hitouts,” a relaxed Rodda said post-game. “The foot still has a little ways to go but it’s good to get the body out there, feel it in the lungs and enjoy some footy again after a long break. “The foot is just getting used to the movements of rugby again and strengthening in the contact moments after a lot of straight line running in rehab.” Having an experienced 34-Test performer back in the mix in a World Cup year is a huge asset for the Wallabies and new coach Eddie Jones. “Through the whole five months or so of the very detailed return-to-play plan from my surgeon and physios, this year’s World Cup was at the forefront of my mind,” Rodda admitted. “Now the season is about to start, I’m very much staying in the present because I really have to perform at Super Rugby level for anything to happen.” Rodda struck up a good early connection with the throws of Force recruit Folau Fainga’a. One misfire from the hooker, sailing over the lineout, did give the dangerous Fijians a loose ball to turn into a first half try. Fainga’a limped off late in the first half with a sore right ankle which he strapped in ice for the rest of the evening. There was an encouraging start for top Force signing Chase Tiatia. The former Chiefs attacker started at fullback and threw a pinpoint cutout pass for the opening try to winger Zac Kibirige. Giant lock recruit Felix Kalupu, from New Zealand’s North Harbour, made some forceful ball-carries, veteran halfback Ian Prior threw a lovely wide ball for English centre Sam Spink’s late try and there was fight to score twice in the closing 10 minutes. Spink is a good pick-up and the yellow-and-black of the Force's alternative strip will have sat well with him because they are the colours of his English club Wasps. Hamish Stewart was a mixed bag at No.10. He made several clutch, low tackles but coughed up a ball when thumped himself. That turnover became a 60m counter-attack try for the Drua. The Drua were really the story of the night. They were far fitter, more confident in their organisation of play and less panic-prone than last season. You can see them challenging for wins against the five Australian Super Rugby sides, especially with new factors like sharp outside centre Iosefa Masi. The Tokyo Olympics rugby sevens gold medallist detoured via the North Queensland Cowboys last season when he played for the NRL club’s feeder team, Townsville Blackhawks. His footwork is dynamic and a show-and-go stalled the defence for the dash of speed that set up his own try.  Click Here: cheap gold coast titans jerseys

World Rankings: Scotland move above England to equal all-time high

After Scotland defeated England 29-23 in the opening round of the Six Nations on Saturday – their third successive Calcutta Cup win – they have climbed the world rankings.

The latest World Rugby standings have been published, with Scotland being the biggest climber from the first tier-one Test weekend of 2023.

Joint all-time high

Duhan van der Merwe scored twice for Scotland to seal the six-point victory and second place on the Six Nations table after Round One.

Further tries from Huw Jones and Ben White ensured the Calcutta Cup remained in their possession for at least another year.

The victory also saw them move into fifth place on the world rankings, earning 1.51 points for the win at Twickenham.

It was a two-place jump for Gregor Townsend’s side, with Australia now moving down to seventh and England to sixth.

Fifth is Scotland’s joint highest ranking, having reached the position in 2018 when they finished in the top half of the Six Nations table.

Ireland on top

Elsewhere, Ireland increased their lead over France at the rankings’ summit, adding seven hundredths of a point.

Andy Farrell’s side secured their first win over Wales in Cardiff since 2013 and, in doing so, increased their rating to 90.70.

France did not pick up additional points for beating Italy 29-24 in Rome due to the gap between the two nations in the rankings.

Wales remain in ninth, but the comprehensive defeat on home soil means they now have just a 0.63-point buffer over 10th-placed Japan.

There were no changes in the rankings from the Rugby Europe Championship, with Georgia, Portugal and Romania all securing big victories over Germany, Belgium and Poland, respectively.

Spain were given a run for their money by the Netherlands, but they held out for a 28-20 win which had no impact on their 16th-place ranking.

FFF president Noël Le Graët could leave position in January

So Foot report via footamateur.fr this afternoon that the president of the French Football Federation, Noël Le Graët, has reportedly announced that he would be resigning from his position at the turn of the calendar year.

The latter website claim to have spoken to the director of a regional league, who says he was told Le Graët would only be staying at the FFF for another four months.

An FFF employee has told the outlet that he has been hearing that Le Graët intends to step down since the start of the summer, as he is “tired“. Another source claims that he only set off the rumour he was resigning in order to see what would happen.

A So Foot investigation from last week alleged that the president had been sending inappropriate text messages to younger female colleagues, claims which he has not responded to.

Florence Hardouin, the director general of the FFF who was also named in So Foot’s investigation, is said to have been lobbying in the last few weeks for Philippe Diallo to take the presidency. Le Graët’s favourite to succeed him is Strasbourg president Marc Keller.

Peter Bosz after Lyon’s third straight defeat: “I’m going to drink a lot of alcohol.”

Speaking in the wake of his Lyon team’s narrow loss to Paris Saint-Germain last night, Peter Bosz indicated that he was not worried about his job safety and that he saw improvement in his players’ performance.

His words transcribed in RMC Sport, the Dutchman pointed out that his defence was sitting too deep in the first half, which led to Lionel Messi’s early opener.

“In the first half, we weren’t [playing] as I want to see us. Our defensive line was too deep, we weren’t going into challenges… I tried to correct that at the break and it was better in the second half, even if we had our best chances in the first. But we have to be honest and recognise that PSG had lots of chances as well. We know we were playing against a very, very good team with exceptional players.”

“[On how he will handle the international break] I’m going to drink a lot of alcohol after these three defeats [smiles]. On a more serious note, we were bad against Lorient, against Monaco we didn’t deserve to lose as we played well, and today the players gave it all. I won’t turn my back on what I saw, we’re going in the right direction. Is there a sense of progress? Absolutely. The most important thing is the points, I understand that well, but as a manager I also look at how my team plays, and on that point I can’t say anything.”

“[On whether he is worried about his job] No, I’m never worried. If they don’t give me time, then that’s how it is. But I have a clear idea of my work and how I want my players to play. We’re training hard and we’re doing all we can to win games.”

Six Nations: Stuart McCloskey unsure why Joe Schmidt overlooked him but pleased with his current involvement with Ireland

Ireland centre Stuart McCloskey admits he is not sure why former head coach Joe Schmidt chose to overlook him in the past and feels his game has developed since.

Current head coach Andy Farrell has opted for McCloskey far more frequently, and the robust runner is set to continue in the Irish midfield for Saturday’s blockbuster Test against Ireland.

Happy with current selection

When asked what Farrell sees in him and what Schmidt did not, the centre was not sure but is delighted to be getting a run in the current set-up.

“I don’t know, maybe I’m a better player now than I was back then,” the centre said.

“I think my game has improved. There’s obviously been a lot of competition in there. Maybe I just didn’t fit Joe’s eye. But here, that’s in the past, not something to worry about now.

“I probably had a bit more hard feelings at the time but I’m a bit older, that’s the way it is sometimes, you don’t get the luck, you don’t get the rub of the green.

“It will be five (starts) in a row at the weekend, so it’s a nice place to be in.

“I feel a lot more comfortable now with my game and what I can do, whether it’s the first or 80th minute, whereas I was over-thinking it when I was younger.”

Relishing the opportunity

The Ulster star has filled in well for the injured Robbie Henshaw, staying ahead of Bundee Aki in the pecking order.

With seven years between Test caps, running out for Ireland is that much more important for the centre.

“It’s not the end of the world, it’s only rugby at the end of the day, but I put a lot of effort into my game so it’s nice to get games and to show what I can do,” he said.

“I think everyone relishes playing for Ireland, it’s the pinnacle of your game and where I wanted to get to, so it’s nice.

“I’d say it makes me relish it a bit more now and I do appreciate it a lot more.”

Official | Steve Mandanda replaces injured Mike Maignan

Mandanda will be in the squad for France’s final Nations League fixture against Denmark on Sunday – a match that will be Les Bleus’ last before the World Cup in November.

Mandanda hasn’t been selected by Didier Deschamps since Euro 2021, but having switched Marseille for Rennes this summer, he has enjoyed a positive start at the Breton club and has earned himself a recall.

Maignan meanwhile, is one of two France players to withdraw from the squad following the departure of Jules Koundé. Like Maignan, he was injured in the first half of Thursday’s match against Austria, during which Les Bleus came out comfortable 2-0 winners.

According to Le Parisien, Maignan has sustained an injury to his left calf, and could be out of action for up to three weeks, potentially missing both Champions League matches against Chelsea.

Igor Tudor praises Jonathan Clauss after Marseille’s 3-0 win over Angers

Marseille notched up a 3-0 victory over Angers in their first Ligue 1 fixture after the international break, with Jonathan Clauss starring with one goal and two assists for the home side.

In the post-match press conference, OM manager Igor Tudor heaped praise on the full-back, revealing how satisfied he was to coach a player like Clauss. As quoted by RMC Sport, the former Hellas Verona boss said:

“He’s an incredible player, I knew that from the first time I saw him. And he’s a good boy, it’s a pleasure to coach him.”

Since the start of the season, the 30-year-old Frenchman, signed from Lens in the summer transfer window of 2022, has been extremely influential. Under the management of Tudor, Clauss has already earned eleven appearances, racking up one goal and four assists for OM.

With the win on Friday, Marseille, with seven wins from nine Ligue 1 games, have claimed the top spot on the points table. In the league, they next take on Ajaccio in a mouth-watering Ligue 1 fixture on October 8.
