Nick Aldis Talks Being Part Of NWA’s Resurgence, Attending WWE’s Hall Of Fame, Why NWA Feels Real

Current NWA Champion and former Impact Wrestling star, Nick Aldis was a guest on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast this week where he discussed NWA and much more. Below are some highlights of the interview:

Being part of NWA’s resurgence:

“It’s very cool I was mentioning this earlier on it’s the first time in my career where I feel like I have been part of something from jump street. It’s very strange but also very exciting because we are touching on this history and building our show and our individual brands off of the legacy that is already there but at the same time it feels like we are part of something from the beginning and because the team was so small when Billy Corgan purchased the NWA, they contacted me and asked me to be involved and as a talent you couldn’t have been involved any earlier than I was. It’s exciting to see how far we have gone in less than a year and it’s exciting to see how far we can go with it.“

Attending WWE’s HOF and being told people want to sign him:

“What I find really interesting, I went to the Hall Of Fame last year and I will last year, and it’s full of guys I used to work with and then people who used to work and are now in the office and they say they really wanted to sign me. I just come to the conclusion, whatever it is, until they resolve whatever the thing is, I wouldn’t want to be there anyway because they would just cut my balls off.”

Why is NWA real?:

“It feels real because it is. There are no scripts, we say whatever and that becomes the story, Tim Storm is a 53-year-old school teacher who is the NWA Champion. In this era, you cannot lie, that’s where a lot of the business has fallen off. The whole perception is reality and that people will believe whatever you tell them isn’t true when someone can just go click. The authenticity is what makes you feel something. Before Shawn Michaels, you could tell he was a brilliant performer, but once you heard that he got beat up in a bar there is a new element of interest. He was throwing little winks to it, we just decide. I know I push peoples buttons, I go, okay, are we going to have a whole roster of guys who just want to be everybody’s friend. I am 31 and we were told get to WWE, don’t say this and don’t do that because you will get heat. I see it in people’s performances all the time and I hear about it first-hand there’s too many balls in the air because you are worried about a million things that shouldn’t be important.”

Verstappen expects Mercedes to have an edge at Monza

Max Verstappen believes Monza will cater to the top speed advantage of Mercedes’ car, which will require Red Bull to “nail every little detail” to be able to eventually counter its rival.

Verstappen’s popular home win last weekend at Zandvoort allowed the Dutchman to reclaim a three-point lead in the Drivers’ championship, but Red Bull still trails Mercedes in the Constructors’ standings by 12 points despite winning seven races this season – or eight if one factors in Spa – versus four for its adversary.

F1’s return to the Temple of Speed this week where low-downforce set-ups will be the norm should, on paper, favour Mercedes. Furthermore, looking at Red Bull’s recent track record at Monza, the Milton Keynes-based outfit hasn’t won at the venue since 2013.

“I expect Monza to suit Mercedes as it hasn’t been our best track for the last few years, but this year we are more competitive so you never know,” said Verstappen.

“If we continue what we have been doing, working well together as a team, and nail every little detail then we can be competitive but Mercedes might have a top speed advantage on us.”

With Red Bull and Mercedes tightly matched, regardless of the track, Verstappen believes it will be “the finer details” that will eventually allow his team to beat its rival.

“I don’t think either us or Mercedes have a big advantage over the other,” explained the Dutchman.

“At Zandvoort you could see in qualifying and the race that both of our cars are super close and Lewis was applying pressure for the entire race which meant we couldn’t afford to make any mistakes on the track, in the pit lane or on the pit wall, and we didn’t.

“I think it’s the finer details where you can make a difference. When you enter a race weekend you have to work hard as a team on the set-up and fine tuning the little details, that’s where the gains can be made.”

Like Verstappen, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes that Mercedes will hold a performance advantage at Monza, but likely also at the following round at Sochi.

“I think their car and engine package has always been historically very strong at those two venues and they’ve been weaker venues for us,” commented Horner.

“So I expect them to have the advantage at the next two, but then after it should be nip and tuck, I would certainly hope.

“The next two weekends for us are about trying to limit the damage as much as we can and extract as much from the car as we can.”

Norris ‘frustrated’ after missing Q3 cut due to set-up call

A frustrated Lando Norris says he was left stranded in Q2 in qualifying at Zandvoort after taking his McLaren’s set-up “in the wrong direction” for the afternoon session.

Norris was outpaced in qualifying by teammate Daniel Ricciardo for the second race in succession and will line up P13 on Sunday’s grid while the Aussie will start his Dutch Grand Prix from tenth position.

Norris admitted to being “frustrated” by his underperformance but acknowledged that he had made the wrong set-up call.

“I just didn’t get that second attempt because of the red flags,” he said. “I didn’t do a good enough lap in my first attempt and just didn’t make it in.

“A bit of a shame, because I think this weekend so far we’ve been alright, possibly went in a little bit in the wrong direction with the set-up for qualifying, but we make those mistakes sometimes.

©McLaren

“It was kind of my decision really to do what we did with the car. Maybe it didn’t pay off as much as we were hoping and I didn’t put the best of laps in, and it’s simple as that.

“But it’s close, especially with the Alfa Romeo up there, the AlphaTauris up there, the Alpines… It’s just tight and close, and tough. When we don’t put it all together, we end up where we did.”

Asked if his McLaren’s set-up would perhaps prove rewarding in the race, Norris said that he hopes it will, but with overtaking at a premium around Zandvoort, he expects a “tricky” afternoon.

“We know it’s a qualifying-based track, so it’s not like we tried to prepare for tomorrow, whether or not it’s going to help or not,” he added.

“On pure pace today, we maybe struggled a little bit more, so maybe it’s not going to be the best thing for tomorrow. But it might be with the tyres, and tyre savings and things like that.

“Tricky, ’cause either way, even if you save the tyres one tenth a lap compared to other people, it’s so difficult to overtake, it’s going to be hard to do much else.

“But we’ll do our best and see if we can get into the points.”

MVP On Why Hulk Hogan Needs to Do More Than Just Apologize If He Wants to Return to WWE

Former WWE star MVP appeared on yesterday’s edition of Busted Open Radio, and during the appearance, the former WWE United States Champion addressed Hulk Hogan possibly returning to WWE. MVP feels Hogan needs to do a lot more than just apologize if he wants to return to WWE, and MVP added the following:

“Here’s my deal with Hulk Hogan. People say, ‘you know he apologized, and you have to learn to forgive, and who are we to judge…’. Hulk Hogan said from his mouth, ‘I’m racist.’ He used the N-word expletive, with an F-bomb in front of it, and a hard ‘er’ behind it, to describe black people, and said ‘I’m racist.’ And it was in a situation where he was comfortable, and he didn’t realize he was being recorded. So he spoke from his heart.

“Now he’s trying to position himself with apologies, and my question is, what are you apologizing for? For being caught, or for being racist?”

You can listen to more comments from MVP in the audio player below:

“I don’t understand how you just ‘apologize’ that away” @The305MVP tells @davidlagreca1 & @TheMarkHenry why he believes @HulkHogan owes more than just an apology if he ever wants to go back to the WWE pic.twitter.com/9a3m01TUWA

As noted, WWE Executives Michelle Wilson and George Barrios participated in a conference call yesterday to announce the latest WWE Network subscriber count, and during the call Wilson was asked about possible premium tier pricing for the WWE Network.

Wilson noted tiering is something the company has been considering, and could be implementing sooner rather than later. As of now, WWE charges $9.99 per month for access to all the WWE Network content, including live events, but a premium pricing tier could see WWE begin to offer extra content or various amounts of content for different prices:

Barrios says “we think there’s an opportunity to tier the product [WWE Network]… so that’s coming… we don’t have a launch date yet… stay tuned… it’s coming sooner rather than later.”
