Global Solidarity Protests Against Israeli Apartheid as Palestinians Stage General Strike

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Israel took part in an historic general strike Tuesday and were joined by the international community who staged solidarity demonstrations to denounce the latest attacks by the Israeli military which have killed at least 212 people, including 61 children, and wounded thousands more.

Palestinians across the region gathered in public spaces where they marched, listened to speeches, and chanted against Israeli apartheid.

Stores, offices, universities, and other establishments were shuttered.

In dozens of cities across the U.S. and around the world Tuesday, demonstrators gathered to express solidarity with the Palestinians amid the recent spate of violence and attempts by Israeli authorities to forcibly displace families in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

In the U.S., Jewish Voice for Peace worked with local groups in cities nationwide to organize marches, rallies, and vigils.

In New York, protesters gathered at the Israeli Mission at the United Nations before marching to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) home, the offices of AIPAC and Friends of the IDF, and Golda Meir Square, which the group symbolically renamed.

Other rallies and vigils took place or were planned for Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C., Seattle, Chicago, and other U.S. cities. Internationally, there were protests in Jakarta, Instanbul, Beirut, and elsewhere.

The Institute for Middle East Understanding reported that Palestinians who gathered in occupied Jerusalem were met with violence by police.

“It’s the first time in decades that we see Palestinians across the political divide take part in such a general strike,” Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim said, reporting from Ramallah. As the global grassroots coalition Progressive International tweeted, the last general strike held by Palestinians lasted for 174 days in 1936.

“Today, the people of Palestine are once again going on strike for their liberation—and calling on the world to join them. The time has come to end the Nakba,” Progressive International tweeted, referring to the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes in 1948.

On the ground in the Middle East, Palestinians circulated a “Manifesto of Dignity and Hope” which called on participants in the general strike to write “a new chapter of courage and pride, in which we tell a story of justice and of truth that no level of Israeli oppression can erase.”

“The truth is that Palestinians are one people, one society. Zionist gangs forced out most of our people, [they] stole our homes and destroyed our villages… They tried to turn us into different societies, each living apart, each in its own separate prison,” the manifesto reads. “It is now time for this tragedy to end.”

Leclerc: Talent alone can’t close the gap to leaders in Monaco

Charles Leclerc believes a driver’s talent remains a crucial factor around the streets of Monaco, but skills alone can’t bridge the gap to F1’s front-runners in the Principality.

Through the decades, Monaco has remained one of the most challenging and stringent tests of an F1 driver’s craft, flair and ability.

Mastering Monte Carlo’s pitfalls lap after lap requires a momentous level of precision and consistency not to mention focus and control, and the perfect blend of aggression and prudence.

As the jewel in Formula 1’s crown, the Monaco Grand Prix is the one they all want to win, but only the absolute best have earned that privilege.

Prowess remains paramount, but Leclerc insists the days when a driver could outpace his rivals around the Principality’s narrow and twisty track on talent alone are long gone.

“I think that was the case at one time, it is still a bit the case today but, unfortunately, there are so many differences and the drivers are so well prepared for circuits like Monaco,” the Ferrari charger told Codesport Monaco.

“The driver can of course make up two or three tenths, but when you talk about the gaps between Red Bull, Mercedes and the others, it is very complicated for us to make the difference.

“Especially as it’s not as if there are two bad drivers in each of these teams! Lewis [Hamilton] and Max [Verstappen] are still in better cars. But you never know.

“In qualifying, everything is decided on one lap. I’ll give it my all and hope to get a good result.

“But let’s be realistic: if Mercedes and Red Bull don’t have any problems, it will be very difficult to challenge them.”

Leclerc values his home race tremendously, but the Scuderia driver says the venue would still rank among his favorite tracks even if he had not been born and raised in Monaco.

“I love to drive at the limit of the car without ever being able to go beyond it because with the walls, you have no right to make mistakes,” he said.

“That’s the challenge I like as a driver and that’s why Monaco has such a special place in my heart.

“Even if I wasn’t a Monegasque, Monaco would still be my favourite track. The feeling for the driver when he drives at full speed in this city is incredible. I love it.”

'Allende Is Smiling': Chilean Voters Elect Progressive Alliance to Rewrite Pinochet-Era Constitution

In a development that was celebrated by champions of democracy around the world, Chilean voters this weekend elected a progressive slate of delegates to the constituent assembly tasked with rewriting the country’s right-wing constitution, which was imposed more than 40 years ago during Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship and has continued to reproduce inequality for over three decades since the end of his rule.

Progressive International tweeted Monday that Chileans took a major step forward in the quest to “bury Pinochet’s constitution and write a new future for Chile”—one that includes guaranteed access to public goods such as water, education, healthcare, pensions, and other necessities.

“Chile will be the grave of neoliberalism!” the group added—a particularly meaningful designation given that the country is often referred to as the laboratory of neoliberalism, where the privatization of everything was first tested on an unwilling population.

After a U.S.-backed coup toppled Chile’s democratically elected socialist president Salvador Allende, on September 11, 1973, Pinochet’s regime implemented a wave of pro-market policies under anti-democratic circumstances at the behest of economists trained at the University of Chicago. This led to vast inequalities and rendered egalitarian reform exceedingly difficult, even in the post-dictatorship period that began in 1990.

There have been numerous attempts over the past 30 years to rein in market fundamentalism in Chile, but because neoliberalism was so deeply embedded in the country’s 1980 constitution, the reign of Pinochet’s politics outlived the military dictator.

During a historic referendum last October, which represented the culmination of a decadeslong revolt against the neoliberal model, Chileans voted in a four-to-one landslide to rewrite the dictatorship-era constitution. Notably, voters chose for the new constitution to be written by a popularly elected assembly of constituents rather than a mixed assembly of politicians and citizens.

At the time, political theorist Melany Cruz called the overwhelming popular support for a new constitution a “chance to bury Pinochet’s legacy… and rebuild the country on a truly democratic basis.” Still, the question remained: Who would be in charge of the process? Which of the more than 1,300 candidates would be selected for this monumental task?

During this past weekend’s election—originally scheduled for April but pushed back due to an increase in coronavirus infections—Chileans were finally given a chance to answer that question definitively.

Of the 155 citizens elected to the constituent assembly, only 38, which is less than a quarter, came from the right-wing coalition known as Vamos por Chile, El Ciudadano reported.

The Chilean newspaper noted that candidates from the center-left coalition, known as Lista del Apruebo, won 25 seats. Meanwhile, 27 candidates from the left-wing coalition, Apruebo Dignidad, were victorious. Furthermore, 48 seats were picked up by “Independent” candidates whom El Ciudadano described as “mostly linked to social movements in Chile.”

In addition, 17 seats at the constitutional convention were reserved for the representation of Indigenous peoples.

By delivering a knockout blow to the country’s right-wing, voters ensured that a large majority of the 155 delegates responsible for establishing a new political framework at the constituent assembly will be bringing progressive perspectives rather than neoliberal orthodoxy to the table, increasing the likelihood that a genuinely emancipatory constitution gets created.

“Today the people, the poorest, the homeless, the women, the Mapuche people won!!!” Karol Cariola, a former student leader in the fight for free, high-quality public higher education and a current congressional representative from the Communist Party of Chile, said Monday on social media. “We are breaking the padlock, which has allowed the right to veto transformations.”

Greg Grandin, a world-renowned historian of Latin America, tweeted, “Allende is smiling.” Alluding to neoliberalism, Grandin added that “it started in Chile. It will end in Chile.”

Marxist economist Richard Wolff, author of Democracy at Work, among other books, also chimed in with a congratulatory message that highlighted the key role played by women in Chile’s ongoing transformation.

In a world-historic first that feminists say could establish a new global standard for greater equality in politics, Congress mandated gender parity at the constitutional convention, meaning that an equal number of women and men had to be elected. According to Reuters, 77 of the 699 women who ran for seats at the constituent assembly were victorious, compared with 78 of the 674 male candidates.

Women candidates did so well, Reuters noted, that the requirement of parity resulted in adjustments having to be made in favor of more men: “A total of five seats were handed to female candidates who polled lower than male counterparts in certain districts to ensure a 50-50 gender split, while seven seats were handed to men who polled lower.” As the news outlet noted, some “lamented the fact any ceiling had been placed on victorious female candidates at all.”

The Guardian reported that “although Chile’s current constitution guarantees equality or nondiscrimination based on sex, it does not ensure women’s rights to equality in marriage and stipulates the protection of ‘life to be born’—a clause that has blighted access to legal, safe abortion in the country.”

While women’s rights advocates “acknowledged that not all women in the assembly will share feminist values,” they expect the makeup of the constituent assembly to result in a framework that enshrines equal rights for women as well as marginalized groups that have been “excluded from political spaces, including the country’s Indigenous communities, LGBT groups, and gender-nonconforming people,” the newspaper added.

In addition, although there are no guarantees they were elected to the constituent assembly, at least 5% of parties’ candidates were required to be people with disabilities, NACLA noted, offering further evidence of Chileans’ efforts to build a more inclusive and representative democracy.

Last year’s referendum that rendered the transformation of Chile’s constitution possible was not on the political agenda until nationwide protests against austerity erupted in October 2019 following a transit fare hike. As Pablo Abufom wrote at the time, however, the social uprising in Chile is “not about 30 pesos, it’s about 30 years.”

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera—himself a billionaire whose University of Chicago-trained brother served as one of Pinochet’s economists during the military dictatorship—responded viciously to the political unrest, “shooting anti-austerity protesters, blinding and maiming [them] by the thousands,” as Ben Norton documented at The Grayzone.

Despite the government’s violent repression of demonstrations, which killed 36 people, Chilean citizens’ persistent and militant resistance forced Piñera in November 2019 to schedule a plebiscite for April 2020, which was postponed until October of last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The constituent assembly will have nine months to a year to draft a new constitution, the key provisions of which must be approved by a two-thirds majority, necessitating the formation of alliances among members. After that, the Chilean people will be asked next year in another national referendum whether or not they accept the new constitution.

The Chilean left’s triumph this weekend was not limited to electing representatives to the constituent assembly. In a historic victory, Irací Hassler became the first candidate from the Communist Party of Chile to be elected mayor of Santiago’s downtown district when she defeated the current right-wing mayor, Felipe Alessandri.

Hilare, Briac a donc raconté : “Ah oui !

Hamilton clocks in 8th on Forbes highest-paid athletes list

Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is Grand Prix racing’s highest earner, but the Mercedes star is also among the world’s top-ten highest-paid athletes for 2020 according to Forbes.

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic which brought the world – and many professional sports – to a standstill last year, there was no off switch for the world’s leading athletes in terms of their income.

On the contrary, most of sport’s mega stars enjoyed more income last year than in 2019.

According to Forbes which took into account retainers, prize money and cash earned away from the sports arena, the ten highest-paid athletes in the world took home pretax gross earnings of $1.05 billion during the past 12 months, 28% more than last year’s top earners.

©Jeff Bottari/Zuffa

At the top of the money pyramid sits Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor who earned a whopping $180m in 2020.

But there’s a catch – or perhaps in McGregor’s case, a punch. The bulk of the fighter’s pay day came from the sale of his holdings in whiskey brand Proper No. Twelve to proximo Spirits for $150m.

Completing the money grab podium in 2020 are footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who earned respectively $130m and $120m.

NFL Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott landed in fourth place with $107.5m, and was followed by NBA legend and Lakers player Lebron James who collected $96.5m last season.

Brazilian striker Neymar lines up sixth in the standings with $95m, while Roger Federer managed to boost his bank accounts by $90m despite being out of commission for most of the year due to a knee injury

Then follows our man Sir Lewis who beefed up his estimated $45m retainer with Mercedes with additional earnings that brought him across the finish line P8 with toral earnings of $82m.

It’s uncertain if Forbes’ estimate took into account the rumored 20% cut applied by Mercedes to its driver’s retainer following the lesser number of races that took place last season.

©Mercedes

Nevertheless, Forbes believes that Hamilton earned himself a healthy bonus thanks to his 11 Grand Prix wins to which he added the fruits of his numerous endorsements deals with Tommy Hilfiger, Monster Energy and Puma.

Interestingly, if Forbes had ranked everyone according to “on the field” earnings only, Hamilton would have clocked in fourth behind Messi, Prescott and Neymar.

'Nothing Is More Beautiful Than Solidarity': Hundreds Mobilize to Stop Arrest of Immigrant Neighbors in Glasgow

Progressive lawmakers and immigrant rights advocates in the United Kingdom on Thursday into Friday applauded an impromptu show of solidarity in Glasgow, Scotland which forced immigration enforcement agents to release two men after they attempted to detain them in a dawn raid during Eid al-Fitr.

According to The Guardian, U.K. Immigration Enforcement agents detained the men in the Glasgow neighborhood of Pollokshields early on Thursday morning, leading about 200 of their neighbors to quickly mobilize and demand the men’s release.

At least one man sat in the street behind the vehicle, while another lay beneath the van to prevent the agents from pulling away.

As soon as he received a message from a neighbor about the raid, Declan Blench told The Guardian, “I put my shoes on and sprinted out. I just thought: ‘You’re not going to do that in front of me.’ There is due process and this is not it.”

“Nothing is more beautiful than solidarity,” Member of Parliament Zarah Sultana said on social media, where she posted a video of the two refugees being released.

Many others also celebrated the community action on social media.

The community members surrounded the van, chanting, “Refugees are welcome here” and “These are our neighbors, let them go!”

Hundreds of residents devoted the entire day to making sure the men were released safely before police officers arrived and ordered they be allowed to return home “in order to protect the safety, public health, and well-being of those involved in the detention and subsequent protest.”

Human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar was among the residents who demanded the men’s release, and spoke to them directly in their native Punjabi during the ordeal.

“I said to them: ‘You’re free because of the people of Glasgow,’ and pointed to the crowd behind me,” Anwar told The Guardian.

According to the outlet, the immigration status of the two men was unknown. Their attempted arrest followed the second dawn raid in Glasgow in a month in an apparent “escalation of the U.K.’s hostile environment policy,” under which Conservative government leaders aim to “make life difficult for migrants living in the U.K.”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, whose Scottish National Party has called for the country to have control over its own immigration policies and enforcement, condemned the U.K. Home Office for carrying out the raid during the Muslim festival marking the end of Ramadan.

“To act in this way, in the heart of a Muslim community as they celebrated Eid, and in an area experiencing a Covid outbreak was a health and safety risk,” said Sturgeon in a statement. “I will be demanding assurances from the U.K. government that they will never again create, through their actions, such a dangerous situation.”

Sturgeon also praised the Pollokshields community on Twitter.

Glasgow residents have long opposed dawn immigration raids, and have recently witnessed the U.K. Home Office relocating refugees to cramped hotel rooms where social distancing was impossible during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Regardless of the immigration status of those targeted today, this heavy-handed approach from the Home Office is unnecessary and avoidable,” Wafa Shaheen of the Scottish Refugee Council told The Guardian. “It is frightening, intimidating, and disproportionate. The hundreds of people on the streets this morning in solidarity with those affected shows people in Scotland are sick of these raids and have had enough.”
