Michael Cole On What He Does Different For WrestleMania, Lesnar/Reigns & More

As noted, WWE longtime announcer Michael Cole recently appeared as a guest on Sky Sports’ Locked Up Podcast for an in-depth interview to promote next month’s WrestleMania 34 pay-per-view. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On making sure he doesn’t know what’s going to happen in advance at WrestleMania pay-per-views, and how he was surprised by Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s streak and The Hardy Boyz returning last year: “I tell people for as much as we complain for the life that we live sometimes, because we are always away on the road and away from our family, life goes on, there’s nothing like it in the world. You know, I’m involved in a lot of things with the company, but WrestleMania is the one time of the year that I don’t want to know anything that is happening as far as stories, so to be able to sit there and take in moments like the Hardy Boys returning, which I didn’t know about, or Brock Lesnar defeating The Undertaker a number of years ago, which I had no idea about; stuff like that. It really makes you appreciate this business and the ups and downs and the roller coaster ride it takes you on.

“The Hardy Boys returning last year was absolutely incredible. It was one of those moments that you get goosebumps and you hope to deliver the line that people will remember for years to come on the WWE Network, and want to remind themselves of the return of the Hardy Boys. Those are great moments, but again, without the athleticism of our performers we would never have those.”

On the build to the WrestleMania 34 main event between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns this year: “First off, when it comes to the match. I think it has become an incredible buildup in leading to this match. One of the problems you face heading into WrestleMania season is that usually about four-five weeks out the matches are made, so what do you do in the mean time to make the match mean more than it already is? I think they have done an incredible job here of not allowing these two guys to go head to head with each other, because if you do, what do you do from that point? If you remember, one of those dark-horse matches that, when people ask you what a great match was at WrestleMania, and people aren’t going to say this, but if you go back and watch it, Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns from a few years ago in Santa Clara, California when Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank, that was a pretty darn good match. Roman Reigns came in to his own that night. He was always on the cusp, and he stood toe to toe with Brock, and had a heck of a match. I think there was a mutual respect between the two, but I believe it was overshadowed by, to me, one of the top three moments in WrestleMania history when Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank. So, I’m expecting now, three years later, you have a more mature and better Roman Reigns, who is at the top of his game right now, and is going up against one of the best in Brock Lesnar, so I think this match is going to be awesome. I really think it is.”

On the uncertainty surrounding Lesnar making the match that much more intriuging: “Here is the other issue; what is Brock’s future? Nobody knows. The rumors are out there. He was out taking pictures with Dana White in UFC when we were in Vegas, that became part of our storyline, but it happened. IIs he going to go back to Ultimate Fighting? Is he going to re-sign with us? All those questions are out there, and I think it adds more of an intrigue. Anytime you can blur the storylines of reality from story, and you are not quite sure which is which, that is when it gets really good, and I believe that is where we are now with Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar; nobody knows what is going to happen.”

Money in the Bank Briefcase
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. AJ Styles vs. Baron Corbin vs. Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Sami Zayn
Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Money in the Bank 6/18

What used to be a yearly staple sneaks it way back on the list after a brief absence, and while it’s easy to put a Money in the Bank Ladder Match in a Match of the Year list, this one definitely earns its keep with strong storytelling backing up the usual innovation.

As usual, Money in the Bank provides spots galore. But this time its well-paced and not as chaotic as normal, without sacrificing the big bumps you expect from these matches. And the investment starts before the bell even rings when Baron Corbin annihilates Shinsuke Nakamura seconds into his entrance. This was a bold move as not only are you taking Shinsuke out of a good chunk of the match, you’re robbing many fans of their first time witnessing his entrance live. As someone who was in attendance, the one thing I was most looking forward to was seeing Shinsuke live after all these years, and I wanted the full package. By the crowd reaction, many others felt the same. But what’s important here is it set-up for one of the biggest reactions later on.

But before that point, there is plenty meat to tear into from all the competitors. Ziggler is somewhat of an unsung master of ladder matches, as his ring awareness and attention to build allows him to maximize his spots and help an otherwise basic manuever hit with more oomph. AJ Styles’ influence is somewhat minimal with great reason, but he still manages to squeeze in a couple crowd-rockers, like essentially using a ladder to complete an Ushigaroshi on Kevin Owens. But the former “Mr. Wrestling” rivals AJ Styles in the department of bump sponging, and he clearly takes the most punishment here. That said, whenever he and Sami Zayn get near a ladder, you can expect to see something new or fresh, like tossing someone onto an open ladder from the turnbuckle.

Speaking of Sami, while his story might not have been the focus of the climax, he was definitively the star of this match. Before Shinsuke’s reemergence, he completely controls this match. He is ever-present and resilient, and the crowd is firmly behind him more with each passing moment. He looks the strongest and comes the closest besides AJ and the eventual winner. He was the source of the biggest bumps, such as the wicked Sunset Flip Powerbomb off the ladder and his Half-and-Half Suplex on the apron. In retrospect, it may have even been the best option to let him win the briefcase after such an incredible performance, but again, this wasn’t his story.

This was about Shinsuke Nakamura fighting to prove his place on the WWE throne, AJ Styles proving that he was the man he’d have to get through first, and Baron Corbin absolutely ruining it all for maximum heat. Outside of that last moment, you see where the seeds were planted well before the Royal Rumble. When Shinsuke’s music hits as Baron tries to claim the briefcase, the arena explodes. Nakamura heads straight for the ring, ready to crack open several cans of whoop-ass on the man who tried to rob him of his shot. He destroys Corbin with ease, followed up by a meddling Ziggler and a plucky Sami. They all eat knee, boot and/or elbow and get tossed aside. Even a deathly Kevin owens manages to stir up enough interest to get a knee to the face. With everyone out of the way, Nakamura is free to set up the ladder to victory. Or so he thinks as one of the greatest moments of 2017 takes place – when AJ Styles puts his hand on the other side of the ladder and shares an intense stare with the King of Strong Style. And this was the moment when the Smackdown main event of WrestleMania was penned officially after hearing that crowd reaction.

The rest is pretty obvious. AJ and Shinsuke have a brief classic as a teaser to what their match could be like under the guise that it would actually happen for something as little as the Money in the Bank Briefcase. They eventually reach the top of a ladder and vie for the opening to grab the prize, but Baron Corbin pushes the ladder over like any smart man would and grabs the briefcase for himself. To his credit, Corbin looked wonderful throughout the match, getting in some heavy spots and really putting over the destructive force he’s supposed to be. He earns enough of his way towards the briefcase despite the flop to come soon after. Had there been a better victor or perhaps a more satisfying finish, the match might have made it to a more meaningful spot, but for what the talent provided, it deserved at least more than an honorable mention.

The John Report: WWE Smackdown Live Review 02/13/18

Live from Bakersfield, California, this is Smackdown Live for episode #964. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Thanks to Melo Man for the banner up top.

Smackdown started with Dolph Ziggler making his entrance to no music. After he stood on the stage, his music hit and he walked down to the ring. Ziggler faces Baron Corbin with the winner getting into the WWE Championship match at Fastlane.

The announce team of Tom Phillips, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton welcomed us to the show.

A clip aired from last week where Daniel Bryan announced AJ Styles vs. Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens at Fastlane for the WWE Title. Later in the week, Shane McMahon said it’s going to be a Fatal 4-Way with the winner of Ziggler vs. Corbin being added to the match. Ziggler paced around the ring.

Analysis: Congrats to Smackdown for showing actual video highlights from last week instead of Raw, which showed images because apparently somebody in WWE thought that was smart. It was not.

Baron Corbin’s music hit, but he did not walk out. Corbin’s music started up again and it stopped for a second time.

There was a shot of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn beating up Corbin backstage with punches. Shaky camera alert! When Corbin got back up, Zayn and Owens beat him down again. Zayn and Owens tossed Corbin into some cart. Owens said “one down, one more to go.”

Owens and Zayn entered the arena with the fans booing them. Zayn walked into the crowd while Owens went down the center aisle. Ziggler went after Zayn in the crowd, but Owens went over there to help Zayn. There was a nearly scary moment as a little girl stepped in front of Ziggler, but he was able to avoid her. Zayn whipped Owens into a trash can. Owens and Zayn dumped Ziggler over the barricade at ringside. Ziggler tried to fight back, but Owens sent Ziggler into the ring post. Owens held up Ziggler and Zayn nailed Ziggler with the Helluva Kick to knock him down.

When Zayn and Owens got to the top of the ramp, Corbin stumbled out there and Owens and Zayn beat up Corbin. Owens tossed Corbin into the railing by the side of the stage. Officials came out to break it up. It took these people five minutes to stop the cheap attack. Owens and Zayn left as the show went to break nine minutes into it.

Analysis: The story is that Owens and Zayn didn’t want anybody else added to their Fastlane match, so they took matters into their own hands. What doesn’t make sense is why nobody else on Smackdown made any attempt to try to stop them from attacking Corbin or Ziggler until it was about five minutes into this attack. The lack of consistency is annoying because sometimes when people brawl they are broken up right away and in cases like this, nobody did anything to stop them for five minutes. The attack from Owens and Zayn was good as an opening segment in terms of wanting to keep people tuned in for more. At least it was something different instead of the show opening promo.

A commercial aired for Elimination Chamber featuring the 7-man Chamber match.

Replays aired of Zayn and Owens attacking Corbin and Ziggler to prevent them from having their match.

The Riott Squad trio of Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan entered together with Logan scheduled for a match.

Charlotte Flair, the Smackdown Women’s Champion, made her entrance to a nice ovation. When Charlotte got into the ring, Becky Lynch entered to watch her back since she is Charlotte’s best friend. Naomi also made her entrance to be in Charlotte’s corner.

Charlotte Flair (w/Becky Lynch & Naomi) vs. Sarah Logan (w/Ruby Riott & Liv Morgan)

This is not for Charlotte’s Smackdown Women’s Title.

Logan was in control with three waistlock takedowns. Charlotte took control with a front facelock and then she tossed Logan across the ring followed by a kick to the face that sent Logan out of the ring. That led to a commercial break.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Charlotte was in control briefly until Logan nailed a chop and Charlotte nailed her with six chops including a final chop to the arm. Logan avoided a move and hit Charlotte with a shoulder tackle to the back for two. Logan stomped on Charlotte to keep her down. Logan hit a sloppy butterfly suplex that got no height. It was more like a throw across the ring. Logan pulled on Charlotte’s arm for a submission to keep her down. Charlotte nailed a rising knee and then Logan came back with a double knee attack for two. Logan stomped on Charlotte to keep her down. Logan nailed Charlotte with forearms. Logan slapped on an armbar with fans chanting for Charlotte, but Logan nailed a clothesline for two. Charlotte with a kick, followed by a chop and Charlotte missed a kick near the ropes. Logan with a back suplex for a two count. Good nearfall. Charlotte with a forearm and Logan came back with a move where she sent Charlotte into the turnbuckle. Charlotte hit a backbreaker and sent Logan into the turnbuckle followed by the Natural Selection for the pinfall win after 10 minutes. Logan looked like she was spiked when she took the move, but she got up fine. It was a good sell by Logan.

Winner by pinfall: Charlotte Flair

Analysis: *3/4 The match was average since Logan has this awkwardness about it. Morgan’s style is unorthodox, but it looks like it hurts when she does her strikes, so that’s good. Charlotte sold the attack well leading to the predictable comeback win. It’s nice to see the champ win a non-title match, which is understandable since the story was the Charlotte has beat Morgan and Logan to set up the showdown with Riott. Logan sold the Natural Selection almost like she was about to do a headstand off it and then down she went.

Post match, Charlotte Flair celebrated with Lynch and Naomi in the ring. Charlotte went over the announcers to say one more woman left, which is a reference to Ruby Riott.

Analysis: I assume the plan is for Charlotte to face Ruby at Fastlane.

Daniel Bryan, Smackdown’s GM, was in his office on his phone (like how he is booked every week to be on his phone). Shane McMahon walked up to him to recap what Owens and Zayn did. McMahon said that Corbin and Ziggler said they are still going to get their opportunity tonight. Corbin will face Owens and Ziggler will face Zayn. If either man wins then Fastlane becomes a Fatal 4-Way or a Fatal 5-Way. Shane added that if Owens or Zayn gets involved in either of the matches then they are out of the title match at Fastlane. Shane left with Bryan looking like he was fine with all of that.

Analysis: They love multi-man matches so much. Raw just had a five way. The previous Raw had a triple threat main event. Fastlane may be a five way. They also set up two heel vs. heel matches for later in the show. I guess it makes sense in the storyline, but it’s all very confusing in the big picture.

(Commercial)

There was a video about Black History Month.

Kevin Owens made his entrance looking serious. Baron Corbin entered for the match as well. The first of two heel vs. heel matches on this show. Replays aired of Owens and Zayn beating up Corbin earlier in the night.

Kevin Owens vs. Baron Corbin

If Corbin wins, he will be added to the WWE Title match at Fastlane.

Corbin was holding his ribs to sell the attack from earlier. They exchanged punches. Owens bailed to the floor. Corbin followed him with a knee to the ribs. Back in the ring, Owens stomped away on Corbin’s ribs. Owens went to the middle ropes and Corbin decked him with a punch leading to Owens going to the floor again. Corbin sent Owens into the barricade ribs first and then face first. Owens sent Corbin shoulder first into the ring post and then he rolled Corbin back into the ring. Owens punched in the ribs with Graves saying that what happened to Corbin earlier may have been the worst beating of his life. That’s a little much. Owens nailed a kick to the ribs and a cannonball attack in the corner for a two count.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Corbin whipped Owens into the barricade. Corbin charged at Owens, but Owens moved and Corbin went crashing into the steel steps. Sami Zayn was watching on a TV backstage. Owens hit a senton back splash for a two count. Owens grabbed a chinlock. Corbin came back with a Chokeslam into a backbreaker that drew a bit of a reaction. Corbin with punches, Owens sent him out of the ring and Corbin did his run out of the ring and go back in spot leading to a clothesline that Owens sold with a flip bump. That got a two count. Corbin missed a corner charge by hitting the steel post and Owens got a two count out of it. Owens went up top, but Corbin stopped him and Owens charged leading to a Deep Six Slam by Corbin for a two count. Owens hit a superkick, Corbin avoided a clothesline and Corbin hit the End of Days slam for the pinfall win after 11 minutes. The fans cheered the win.

Winner by pinfall: Baron Corbin

Analysis: **3/4 Good effort by both guys by having a physical match where they showed a lot of intensity to try to get the win. It was weird seeing Corbin working as a face in the match that was coming back from everything Owens was dishing out. The last few minutes were really good with Owens coming close to winning a few times, but Corbin had a lot left and finished him off with the End of Days. It’s been a while since Corbin was booked with some positive momentum. It’s also possible that this angle will lead to Corbin turning face since his heel run wasn’t going that well, so maybe a change is what would be best for him. I don’t know if that’s the plan right now.

There was a shot of Sami Zayn looking upset watching the match in the locker room.

The win means that Corbin will be added to the WWE Title match at Fastlane. Corbin was cheered by some fans as the ref raised his hand.

Bobby Roode’s US Title open challenge is up next.

(Commercial)

Let’s Hear From Bobby Roode and Others

Bobby Roode, the US Champion, made his glorious entrance to a good reaction from the crowd. There was a clip from last week with Randy Orton hitting Roode and others with the RKO.

Roode did a promo in the ring. Roode said he wanted to be the greatest United States Champion in history. Roode said in order for him to do that, he has to steal a tradition from John Cena. Roode talked about how Cena defended this title against everyone and anyone, so it gives him great pride and respect that the United States Open Challenge will continue. Roode said the open challenge is for anybody in the locker room, but he hopes the man that accepts his challenge meets him face to face rather than hitting him with a RKO out of nowhere. Fans chanted “RKO” and Randy Orton’s music hit.

Randy Orton made his entrance in his gear with Phillips noting the US Title is a title that has eluded Orton in his career. Orton got in Roode’s face as they looked ready to start a match.

Jinder Mahal’s music hit to interrupt. Mahal, along with Sunil Singh, did a promo on the stage saying the WWE Universe respects Orton, but the Smackdown Live roster doesn’t respect him since they only voted Orton #9 on the Smackdown Top 10. Mahal pointed out that Orton was a 13-time World Champion, first ballot Hall of Famer, the legacy, the evolution and the face of WWE, but only #9 voted by his own peers. Mahal stood on the apron noting that he beat Orton for the WWE Championship and added that he respects Orton. Fans chanted “RKO” to interrupt Mahal. Mahal told Orton that the rest of the Smackdown roster thinks that Orton has peaked.

Orton grabbed a microphone. Orton said he doesn’t give a damn about any top ten list and he never will. Mahal got in the ring. Mahal pointed out Orton was 16 years in the WWE and only #9 while Roode was six months in WWE and he was #5. Mahal said Orton devoted his life to perfect his craft and he’s beaten by an arrogant newcomer. Fans chanted “RKO” again. Mahal said he respects Orton, but he has it in good authority that Roode fancies himself as a future legend killer.

Roode said Jinder had some pretty big words for a man that couldn’t even make the top ten. Roode said Jinder didn’t make the list because nobody there respects him. Roode told Orton he has nothing but respect for him for everything he has done in the ring. Roode added that Orton is only #9 because everybody there, including Roode, are sick and tired of being attacked out of nowhere.

Orton said “are you talking about when I do this?” and hit a RKO on Singh. Mahal took control from there with The Khallas on Roode and The Khallas on Orton. Mahal stood tall as the fans booed him. Mahal’s music hit to end it.

Analysis: The segment was good with Jinder delivering one of his better promos as a heel that pissed off Orton and Roode with what he said. What Mahal said was true in some ways. Mahal even said he respected Orton, but the key is the way he said it and the fans don’t believe him since he’s the heel. Clearly defined roles are important. Anyway, it looks like this will set up a triple threat match for the US Title although I think that’s a bad idea considering there’s already a multi-man match for the WWE Title. For whatever reason, WWE sure loves multi-man matches these days. I don’t mind Orton competing for the US Title after so many years in main events. John Cena did it, so Orton doing it makes sense. As for the Top 10 List, the whole thing seemed useless and Orton saying he doesn’t care about it shows how little it matters.

(Commercial)

The announcers talked about Ronda Rousey signing her official Monday Night Raw contract at the Elimination Chamber PPV on February 25.

The New Day trio of Xavier Woods, Big E and Kofi Kingston entered the ring. There was a table with a lot of pancakes on a table. Kingston pointed out that today is Fat Tuesday aka Pancake Tuesday and he did his “baby” yell. Woods said in order to celebrate their most favorite holiday, Big E is going to destroy the record by eating 113 pancakes in 8 minutes. Big E said he felt good. Kingston asked the fans if they want to see Big E break this record. There was a pancake counter on the screen and Big E stuffed his face with them. It was going slowly. They were interrupted by Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin.

Gable said when he was training for the Olympics this is exactly what he envisioned himself being a part of it and sarcastically said this is awesome. Benjamin said what they have done for pancakes is astronomical. Benjamin suggested that New Day should open their own version of IHOP as Chad and Shelton got into the ring. Benjamin told them to leave the Smackdown Tag Team division to some serious competitors.

Woods asked them if they are saying that Kofi, Big E and himself are not serious competitors? Woods reminded them that they set the record for longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions. Woods asked them who wants to see Chad and Shelton as champions (leading to the “who” chants), then they said “nobody” at once. Gable said they have a serious side. Gable tossed a pancake to the mat. Benjamin tossed a pancake in the air and said “I flapped his jack.” Big E grabbed one of the trays of pancakes: “Don’t you touch our cakes.” Gable said they had news for them: “Nobody likes pancakes.” The crowd booed and Benjamin said from now on they are eating waffles. They tossed Big E’s tray down. Kofi and Xavier held Big E back. A ref got in between them to set up a match.

Analysis: That was pretty silly in a bad way. I understand wanting to infuse some comedy into the show occasionally, but that was not one of the funnier New Day segments. I like both teams, so putting them in a match is fine with me.

(Commercial)

The match started during the break.

Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin vs. The New Day – Big E & Kofi Kingston (w/Xavier Woods)

Kingston nailed the double boots to the face and Benjamin came back with a knee to Kingston’s face for a two count. Gable tagged in to work on Kingston’s left arm. When Kingston broke free, Gable nailed a rolling kick for a two count. That was sweet. Kingston broke free briefly, Benjamin went for a suplex, Kingston slipped out and Gable pulled Big E off the apron to prevent the tag. Benjamin decked Woods with a punch while on the floor. Kingston nailed a jumping double foot stomp on Benjamin. Big E hot tag against Benjamin with two overhead belly to belly suplex, the side belly to belly and the running splash. That’s the usual hot tag offense from Big E. Gable sent Big E into the corner and then nailed a German Suplex. That was great. Gable tagged out, but Woods distracted the ref, so the ref prevented the tag. Kingston dropkick sent Gable out of the ring. Big E picked up Gable on his shoulder and Kingston jumped off the middle ropes to complete the Midnight Hour double team move for the pinfall win. It went about five minutes.

Winners by pinfall: The New Day

Analysis: **1/4 Good stuff for the time given. I liked the twist in the match with the face New Day team distracting the referee to prevent the ref from seeing the tag. It was Woods’ way of getting revenge after Benjamin hitting him with a cheap punch. These teams could have a great match if they got more time and maybe that’s where this rivalry is going since The Usos may be facing another team in the Bludgeon Brothers.

It’s Ziggler vs. Zayn up next.

Dolph Ziggler was shown walking backstage. Renee Young showed up to interview him. Ziggler said he’s been more selective in picking his spots and finding opportunities. Ziggler said he loves this and it’s about doing what he was put on this planet to do – perform in that ring. Ziggler said that nobody will outshine him, which is why Sami and Kevin attacked him like the cowards they are. Ziggler said the reason he is back is for one thing only, the one thing that has eluded him his entire career: “I want to main event WrestleMania and I’ll be damned if I don’t walk in there as WWE Champion.”

Analysis: Very good promo from Ziggler. I don’t think he’s going to main event WrestleMania, but it’s the kind of thing every wrestler should say with less than two months to go until that show. Ziggler speaks with a lot of passion, so it’s easy to like him. I could see him turning back into a face with this storyline.

(Commercial)

A video aired telling us it was 54 days until WrestleMania. It’s 53 days as of today.

The Usos, Smackdown’s Tag Team Champions, did a promo talking about how great they are as a tag team. Some of their words appeared on the screen because that’s a new thing WWE has been doing in the last few months. They spoke about how there is nothing that can break this bond. As the promo ended, The Bludgeon Brothers hit a screen with their hammers (it was like a projection screen rather than a TV) and then they were shown standing backstage looking serious.

Analysis: The Usos vs. Bludgeon Brothers makes sense as the next title feud although The Bludgeon Brothers have yet to beat credible teams since their return a few months ago.

Sami Zayn was backstage in the gorilla position ready to enter the arena. Kevin Owens walked up to him saying that Zayn can’t lose and don’t let him down. Zayn said there is no we in this championship match – it’s every man for himself. Zayn’s music hit and he made his entrance.

Dolph Ziggler’s entrance saw him walk out to no music and then as he appeared on the ramp, his music started up and he walked down to the ring.

(Commercial)

Next week on Smackdown: Charlotte Flair, Naomi & Becky Lynch vs. Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan.

Analysis: That’s fine. I think Riott will pin one fo the faces to set up Charlotte vs. Riott at Fastlane.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Sami Zayn

If Ziggler wins he’ll be added to the WWE Title match at Fastlane.

The first few minutes saw Zayn do the cheap tactic of grabbing the ropes constantly to prevent Ziggler from attacking him. Owens was shown watching on a TV backstage. Ziggler had enough of it and punched Zayn followed by a neckbreaker. Zayn bailed to the floor to create some space. Zayn took control with a slingshot that sent Ziggler throat first into the middle ropes. Zayn drove Ziggler back first into the turnbuckle. Zayn went for a move off the ropes, but Ziggler countered with a dropkick to send Zayn out of the ring.

(Commercial)

The show returned with Zayn in control with a headlock. Zayn nailed a clothesline. Ziggler nailed a leaping DDT, so both guys were down selling it. Ziggler went for a Fameasser, Zayn got out of it and Ziggler hit the Fameasser for a two count. The crowd was behind Ziggler for it. They battled on the turnbuckle and Zayn hit an Exploder Suplex off the top rope. That was a sweet move. It’s a risky move also, but they nailed it perfectly. Both guys were down after the move, so Zayn was unable to cover after hitting such a big move. Zayn avoided a dropkick, caught Ziggler and hit a slingshot into the steel post. Zayn went for the Helluva Kick, but Ziggler moved and Ziggler hit the Zig Zag…for two as Zayn got his shoulder up. That was a great nearfall. Fans chanted “this is awesome” for them. Zayn avoided a superkick attempt and sent Ziggler shoulder first into the steel post. Zayn sent Ziggler into the steel post again. Owens looked like he was happy while watching the match. Zayn wanted a Blue Thunder Bomb, but Ziggler fought out of it and got a rollup where he sat on top. Zayn nailed an Exploder Suplex that sent Ziggler into the turnbuckle. Zayn set up for a Helluva Kick, but Ziggler countered with a Superkick. Ziggler covered for the pinfall win after 16 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Dolph Ziggler

Analysis: ***1/2 That was a really good match that was given a lot of time with several spots that were believable as finishing moments in the match. Going into it, the Ziggler win was considered obvious, but it was booked in such a way that a Zayn win was believable as the match went on. The best spot in the match was the Exploder Suplex off the top rope. It’s similar to doing a superplex, but it’s so rare to see an Exploder off the top that it really stood out. I like how aggressive Zayn was in hitting big moves like that as well as sending Ziggler into the steel post two times in a row. It felt like more of a fight instead of two guys just hitting a bunch of moves. The finish was very good with Zayn setting up for the Helluva Kick only for Ziggler to counter with a Superkick. They set it up so that the first guy that got their signature kick in was going to get the win and that’s what happened.

The win by Ziggler means that the WWE Title match at Fastlane will be: AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Fatal 5-Way match.

Ziggler celebrated the win by standing on the announce table while the fans cheered for him. Smackdown went off the air that way.

Analysis: I think the 5-Way match will be good. My problem is they are relying on multi-man matches way too often. If they change it to a 5-Way Elimination match that would make it even better, btu I doubt that happens since there’s the 7-Man Elimination Chamber match two weeks earlier.

They say the only way you can “main event” WrestleMania is by winning the Royal Rumble. Or maybe you can win a 7-Man Elimination Chamber because six men aren’t enough. Or maybe a 5-Way at Fastlane. My head hurts. I like the wrestlers on the WWE roster. However, too many multi-person matches makes them less special every time you do them. It gets more people on the show and tells different stories (odds are against champ retaining yadda yadda we know), but 1 on 1 matches are what is best.

As far as a winner goes at Fastlane, I think AJ Styles will retain his WWE Title. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t keep it because Styles vs. Nakamura at WrestleMania is the right way to go.

Three Stars of the Show

1. Dolph Ziggler

2. Sami Zayn

3. (tie) Baron Corbin

3. (tie) Kevin Owens

The Scoreboard

Last week: 6.5

2018 Average: 5.71

Last 5 Weeks: 6.5, 5.5, 7.5, 5.5, 4.5

Final Thoughts

It gets a 6 out of 10.

This was just an average show or maybe slightly above average because of the strength of the main event. I’m not too thrilled about WWE relying on multi-man matches too much, but Ziggler and Corbin each looked great in picking up big wins. Both guys needed that. Ziggler vs. Zayn was one of the best TV matches of the year. It’s also going to be interesting to see if Ziggler is back in the face role and if Corbin will be a face going forward as well.

There was no sign of AJ Styles or Shinsuke Nakamura on this show. Both men were missed.

The next Smackdown PPV is Fastlane on March 11 with only one match announced so far.

WWE Championship: AJ Styles vs. Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin

The John Report: The WWE Raw Deal 02/19/18 Review

It’s the last episode of Raw before Sunday’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. There are two big matches advertised for Raw. The 7-men in the Elimination Chamber match are in a Gauntlet match: John Cena, Roman Reigns, Finn Balor, Elias, Seth Rollins, Braun Strowman and The Miz. Also, there’s a 6-woman tag featuring the women in the Elimination Chamber match: Mickie James, Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss, Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose.

Live from Phoenix, Arizona, this is the Raw Deal for episode #1291 of Monday Night Raw. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. If you like what you read here, please support TJRWrestling by getting one of our amazing t-shirts right here. Thanks to Melo Man for the banner up top.

There was a moment of silent for the school shooting in Parkland, Florida last week. It’s good to show respect for that for a tragedy.

Roman Reigns made his entrance to start the Gauntlet match. Mix of cheers and boos for him while Michael Cole shrieked “The Big Dog” when Reigns got out there.

The announce team of Michael Cole, Corey Graves and Jonathon Coachman were shown on camera welcoming us to the show.

Reigns was interviewed by Charly Caruso in the ring. Reigns said he’s not worried about tonight. Reigns noted that he’s never been in an Elimination Chamber before and he’s seen what it has done to their bodies. Reigns mentioned the six men he’s against in the Chamber match and Reigns said that those guys have one thing in common – they can’t beat Brock Lesnar. Reigns said it’s his time now and he can beat him. Reigns said the last time he faced Brock Lesnar he would have defeated him and here comes Seth Rollins, who won that match at WrestleMania 31 when Rollins cashed in the Money in the Bank contract to leave as the WWE Champion.

Analysis: Solid promo from Reigns. He has confidence going into the Chamber and facing Lesnar. People don’t like him for that, but it’s easy to see why Reigns would feel that way.

Rollins made his entrance to a good ovation and was wearing a “Monday Night Rollins” shirt.

Gauntlet Match rules begins with two guys, there’s an elimination, next guy goes in until there’s one man left. That means there will be 6 pinfalls or submissions featuring these 7 men.

Gauntlet Match #1: Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins

It was a slow start to the match with Reigns grabbing a headlock to ground Rollins early on. Reigns with a running shoulder tackle to knock down Rollins, but Rollins came back with a cradle for two followed by a backslide for two. Rollins up top with a springboard attack and Reigns hit a Superman Punch for a two count as Rollins got his right shoulder up. Reigns set up for the Spear, Rollins kicked him twice and went for the Curb Stomp, but Reigns got a rollup for two and Rollins with the ROLLUP OF DEATH~! was enough to beat Reigns. It went 19 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Seth Rollins

The crowd reacted to the Reigns elimination in a big way. Reigns was shocked by it. Cole put it over as a big deal. Rollins and Reigns did a fist bump out of respect.

Analysis: ***1/2 It was the usual good match from them. They had a good amount of nearfalls to build up the drama of the match. It wasn’t a case of one guy dominating the match either because they went back and forth the entire time. Rollins winning with the ROLLUP OF DEATH~! protects Reigns by not losing to a finisher. I’m not surprised that Reigns lost since he’s a lock to win the Chamber match on Sunday.

John Cena was next up in the gauntlet.

Gauntlet Match #2: Seth Rollins vs. John Cena

As soon as Cena got into the ring, Rollins knocked him down and got a nearfall as the show went to break again.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Cena had his t-shirt still on as he grounded Rollins with a headlock. When they got back to their feet, Cena nailed a clothesline and Cena threw his shirt into the crowd to a fan that had a Cena shirt on already. Cena punched Rollins and a hard whip into the turnbuckle got a two count for Cena. Cena dumped Rollins out of the ring going for a countout victory. Rollins has been in the match for over 30 minutes so far. When Rollins went back into the ring, Cena told the ref to count him down and Cena told Rollins to stay down. Cena with a belly to belly suplex on Rollins, then he did it again and a third time for a two count. It went to break there with Cena looking frustrated.

(Commercial)

Cena was frustrated that he couldn’t beat Rollins. When Rollins stumbled out of the corner, Cena decked him with a punch followed by another punch that knocked Rollins down. Cena was running around the ring to show he was fresh. Cena with a punch for a two count. Rollins shoved Cena to tell him he’s got a lot left. Cena with a clothesline for two. Rollins was on the apron and Cena knocked him down to send Rollins crashing to the floor. The ref counted Rollins for a nine count and Rollins got back into the ring.

(Commercial)

Back from another break, Cena with two shoulder tackles. Rollins fought back with a punch. Rollins jumped off the top rope. Cena slapped on the STF. Cena yelled “it’s over” at Rollins, but Rollins fought back with a Slingblade neckbreaker for a two count. Rollins with a forearm on Cena in the corner followed by a Falcon Arrow attempt, but Cena got a cradle for two. Cena with a spinning suplex. Cena took a long time to set up the Five Knuckle Shuffle, so Rollins kicked Cena in the face, kick to the gut and a kick to the face for two. They battled on the apron, Rollins charged and Cena sent Rollins into the steel ring post. Cena charged at Rollins on the floor, Rollins moved and Cena went shoulder first into the steps. The ref counted them both out of the ring. Both guys slid back in before the ten count. Cena slammed Rollins again and finally hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena went for the AA, but Rollins rolled him up for a two count. Rollins slapped on a Crossface submission on Cena. You could tell Cena talked to Seth while they set up the AA, Rollins slipped out and Rollins with an enziguri kick to the head. Rollins up top and he connected with a Frog Splash for a two count. Cena finally got Rollins on his shoulders and Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment, but Rollins got his left shoulder up for a two count. Cole thought that was it. The replay showed that Rollins did kick out in time. Cena went up top, Rollins went after him with a superplex into a Falcon Arrow slam for a two count as Cena kicked out. Rollins charged in, Cena avoided it and Cena slapped on the STF submission again. Rollins crawled to the bottom rope to force another break. When Rollins tried a kick, Cena countered into a STF again. Rollins crawled to the bottom rope again. Cena tried the AA off the ropes, but Rollins elbowed out of it. Rollins powered Cena onto his shoulders and hit an Attitude Adjustment for a two count. That drew a big reaction from the crowd with the announcers putting over Rollins. Cena hit the AA, he rolled through going for another one, but Rollins countered, knee to the face and Rollins hit a Curb Stomp on Cena to pin him. Their match went 33 minutes. Rollins has been in the ring for 57 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Seth Rollins

Analysis: ****1/4 That was excellent. It was really slow early on, but they got going and it was a lot of fun by the end. Rollins beating Reigns and Cena back to back is very impressive and the crowd is reacting to him in a big way. I loved the way Cena was so frustrated about failing throughout the match and the story of Rollins continuing to come back. They just worked really well together. Rollins was put over huge by beating Reigns and Cena back to back while continuing to wrestle for nearly an hour up to this point. It doesn’t mean he is winning the Elimination Chamber match, but at least the story is about Rollins’ resiliency and ability to keep coming back.

Elias was the next man up.

Gauntlet Match #3: Elias vs. Seth Rollins

Elias with a running back elbow for a two count. They went to break early into this new match.

(Commercial)

Rollins has been in the ring for over one hour by this point. Elias slapped on the half crab submission. John Cena was interviewed by Renee Young backstage in the interview area. Elias stomped away on the left knee of Rollins. When Elias pulled Rollins off the ropes, Rollins landed and sold the knee injury. Rollins fought back with punches. Elias ran the ropes and Rollins nailed a superkick for a two count. Rollins launched himself over the top rope and landed on top of Elias outside the ring. Back in the ring, Rollins kick to the face and Elias with a knee to the jaw. Elias hit the Drift Away on Rollins to beat Rollins after 9 minutes of action.

Winner by pinfall: Elias

Analysis: ** It was a fresh Elias beating an exhausted Rollins as it should be in a situation like that. Rollins got a good amount of offense and he was selling everything well with the knee injury, but the fatigue was setting in. It was the right call to have Elias beat Rollins with his finisher like that.

Rollins slowly rolled out of the ring as most of the crowd gave Rollins a standing ovation out of respect for his performance. Fans chanted “Thank You Seth” for Rollins. As Rollins was getting helped to the back, Finn Balor made his entrance.

Analysis: Rollins spent 65 minutes in the ring. That’s the longest of any wrestler in a match in Raw history. Incredible showing from him.

Gauntlet Match #4: Elias vs. Finn Balor

Balor was aggressive early. Balor tried a top rope move, but Elias bailed to the floor and they went to break there.

(Commercial)

Elias was in control with an armbar followed by a knee drop to Balor’s arm. Elias sent Balor into the turnbuckle as Rollins was interviewed backstage by Young. Rollins said he pinned two of the best in the world and all-time back to back. Rollins said that it doesn’t mean anything if he doesn’t win the Elimination Chamber on Sunday. Elias worked on the left arm of Balor by whipping it against the side of the ring apron. Fans were chanting “We Want Strowman” as Elias sent Balor into the turnbuckle. Elias hit a sitout Powerbomb for a two count as the show went to break again.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Elias was still in control as he whipped Balor into the ring post. They went back in the ring with Balor getting a rollup for two, but Elias took control again with an armbar. Balor broke free with a double foot stomp on Elias. Balor with a Slingblade attack that took down Elias followed by a corner dropkick. Balor went up top and hit the Coup de Gras double foot stomp for the pinfall win after 18 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Finn Balor

Analysis: **1/2 It was a solid match although there were some dead spots and a slow pace. When Elias is on offense for a long time it’s really not that interesting. Elias is also limited in terms of what he does in there. Balor showed some heart coming back although it’s not like the crowd reacted to any of this in a big way.

The Miz’s music hit. Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas entered, but Miz wasn’t with them because Miz attacked Balor from behind.

Analysis: That means Braun Strowman is the last man in this match.

Gauntlet Match #5: Finn Balor vs. The Miz (w/Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas)

Miz worked over Balor with a DDT followed by a running kick to the head. Balor with forearms, but Miz stopped him with a knee to the gut. Miz dumped Balor out of the ring. Miz whipped Balor left shoulder first into the barricade. Miz continued on offense by wrenching Balor’s left arm against the ropes. Balor was selling on the floor as they went to break.

Balor got to the ropes to break a full nelson and Dallas pulled on Balor’s arm leading to Miz getting a rollup for two. Balor ran the ropes and hit a somersault dive onto Dallas and Axel. That was impressive and drew a big pop. Balor kicked Miz in the face and a dropkick sent Miz into the turnbuckle. Axel distraction, so Balor punched him, Dallas knocked down by a Balor punch and Miz tripped up Balor on the top rope. Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale on Balor and pinned him after 13 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: The Miz

Analysis: **3/4 It was a solid match with Balor succumbing to the numbers game advantage that Miz had due to Axel and Dallas being at ringside. I liked how the match was built up. Balor wrestled for 31 minutes during his two matches on the show.

The match has gone on for 96 minutes so far.

The fans chanted “Strowman” as Miz had a shocked look on his face. Strowman’s music hit with Miz looking scared. Huge ovation for Strowman as he made his entrance.

Gauntlet Match #6: Braun Strowman vs. The Miz (w/Bo Dallas & Curtis Axel)

The Miz ran away from Strowman. Strowman chased after him in the card and brought Miz back to ringside as they went to break.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Strowman was in control with a clothesline. Strowman threw Miz across the ring. Dallas and Axel distracted Strowman, so Strowman’s charge across the ring missed as Miz moved out of the way. Miz kicked him, but Strowman shoved him down. Finn Balor was interviewed by Renee Young backstage as Miz hit a dropkick. Balor complained about the Miztourage getting involved, but at Elimination Chamber, they won’t be a factor. Balor said he’s going to win Elimination Chamber as Strowman nailed a running dropkick on Miz. Strowman hit a punch to the chest of Miz to knock him down. Strowman charged, Miz pulled the ropes and Strowman was sent out of the ring. Miz hit a dropkick, but when he went to the floor, Strowman decked him with a clothesline. When Strowman got into the ring, Axel grabbed his foot. Miz hit a Skull Crushing Finale and Strowman did the giant kickout to knock Miz out of the ring. Back in the ring, Strowman with a clothesline. Strowman hit a Running Powerslam and pinned Miz to win the match after 10 minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Braun Strowman

Analysis: ** It was an easy win for Strowman as expected. That was no surprise. The crowd was really into everything Strowman did, which is a great sign that his popularity is growing. Miz hitting the Skull Crushing Finale was a nice surprise, but it was not nearly enough to put Strowman away.

Winner of the Gauntlet Match: Braun Strowman – Match Time: 1 hour, 48 minutes.

Analysis: **** That’s my rating for the whole Gauntlet Match. Four stars out of five. Really good for most of it, but it got a bit tiresome towards the end.

Strowman was interviewed by Charly Caruso on the stage. Strowman: “I don’t fear the unknown – the unknown fears me!” Strowman said he’s not finished with Brock Lesnar and he’s going to get these hands. Strowman said he had unfinished business as he stared into the ring.

Strowman went back in the ring after Miz and the Miztourage. Strowman hit Axel with a Running Powerslam. Strowman also hit Dallas with a Running Powerslam. Miz ran to the back. Strowman chased after him. Strowman sent Miz back out there as they went down the ramp. They went back into the ring Strowman hitting a Running Powerslam on Miz with the crowd cheering him. Strowman was about to leave, but the crowd cheered for him to do more. Strowman picked up Miz and hit another Running Powerslam.

Analysis: It makes Strowman look really strong going into the Chamber match. Is he going to win? Nope. His name isn’t Roman Reigns.

Still to come: Six women tag. Asuka was shown walking backstage because she’s up next.

A video package aired about the next name in the 2018 WWE Hall of Fame: Jeff Jarrett. The video aired about Jeff Jarrett’s career in WWE showing the early Jeff Jarrett days where he spelled out his name, then his second run and some of his WCW clips as well. The video package focused on his title runs in WWE since he was a 6-time IC Champion. Some clips aired of Jarrett being a good heel and various wrestlers talked about him. The end of it featured him spelling out his name and saying: “Ain’t I Great?” There was a shot of the crowd cheering for him. Jarrett joins Goldberg, Dudley Boyz and Ivory in the Hall of Fame.

Analysis: The announcement of Jarrett in the Hall of Fame was surprising to a lot of people because he ran TNA/Impact Wrestling for most of the last 15 years until leaving the company last year. Jarrett went to rehab for alcohol addiction, WWE paid for it and now he’s brought back to WWE after not being in the company since he left in 1999. It’s surprising in a lot of ways, but considering how many people appeared to have issues with WWE and were brought back over the years, nothing really surprises me anymore. Does he deserve it? Sure, because he was a IC Champ many times and a World Champion in WCW. Plus, he helped the careers of a lot of current guys in WWE by giving them jobs in TNA/Impact. He’s had a 30 year career in the business and should be honored for it.

Asuka made her entrance. She’s the Royal Rumble winner that’s headed to WrestleMania. She’s up next.

(Commercial)

PLUG TIME: I wrote about Seth Freakin’ Rollins for The Comeback looking at his career so far, where I think he should be on the card and some ideas on ways to help him get there. I’m a huge fan of Rollins and want to see him main eventing all the time. It’s what he should be doing.

A commercial aired for Photo Shoot featuring Kurt Angle on WWE Network, which premieres after Raw. I’ll watch it on demand this week for sure.

Asuka was in the ring for an interview with Renee Young. Asuka said she controls her own destiny and she’s going to win the championship at WrestleMania. Asuka talked about how Jax didn’t look so strong during their last match when Jax was leaving the ring. Asuka said Jax would tap out. It was tough to understand everything Asuka said because English is obviously not her first language.

Jax went into the ring before Asuka could finish her interview. Jax attacked from behind with a Samoan Drop. Jax nailed three leg drops to the neck of Asuka. Jax left the ring as her “I’m not like most girls” song played to end it.

If Jax wins, then the championship match at WrestleMania becomes a triple threat match joining Asuka and one of the champions.

Analysis: It was just a quick segment to set up Asuka vs. Nia Jax at Elimination Chamber on Sunday. Asuka is likely going to win that match and this segment makes that prediction even more likely.

A video package aired about “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey joining the Raw roster at Elimination Chamber on Sunday. The video featured clips of Rousey on talk shows like Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien while current WWE women like Charlotte Flair, Naomi, Natalya and of course Stephanie McMahon commented on Rousey wanting to be part of WWE due to the level of quality women they have there now. There were clips of Rousey training in the ring and the octagon.

Analysis: The video was very good. You could see her trainer Brian Kendrick in a lot of the clips because she has been training to wrestle with him since last summer. It was weird that three Smackdown women (Charlotte, Naomi and Charlotte) were the ones talking about Rousey when Rousey will be on Raw.

Rousey will sign her Raw contract at Elimination Chamber on Sunday.

(Commercial)

A commercial aired for WWEShop.com shilling WWE merch.

Sheamus and Cesaro, the Raw Tag Team Champions known as The Bar, made their entrance in their matching gear. Cole talked about the trash talk between The Bar and Titus Worldwide, which led to a graphic showing the tweets between the two sides.

Titus O’Neil, Apollo (no more Crews) and Dana Brooke made their entrance.

Analysis: WWE has officially dumped the Crews last name. It’s something several WWE stars have had done to them in the last decade including (Antonio) Cesaro, who is in this match.

The Bar – Sheamus & Cesaro vs. Titus Worldwide – Titus O’Neil & Apollo (w/Dana Brooke)

This is not for the Raw Tag Team Titles.

Titus and Apollo with a double team back elbow on Cesaro. O’Neil with a body slam on Cesaro. The announcers tried to talk about the stats that Brooke keeps, which was ridiculous. Sheamus distracted Apollo, Cesaro sent Apollo out of the ring and Sheamus hit a clothesline on Cesaro. Sheamus sent Crews shoulder first into the barricade. Back in the ring, double team kick by the champs. Sheamus tagged in with a double team shoulder tackle as they worked over Apollo and Sheamus hit a knee drop for two. Cesaro tagged in with a double axe off the top rope followed by an uppercut for two. Brooke clapped to try to get the crowd into it more. Sheamus cheap shot knocked O’Neil off the apron, Apollo sent Sheamus out of the ring and Apollo with a ROLLUP OF DEATH~! on Cesaro earned the pinfall win after four minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Titus O’Neil & Apollo

Analysis: *3/4 That’s the standard WWE booking to set up a title match. Have the champs lose non-title to build up the challengers. These teams have faced off before with Titus and Apollo winning two times as well, so the story is about whether Sheamus & Cesaro can beat them. O’Neil wasn’t in the ring very long in this match. It was mostly about Apollo taking a beating and finding a way to win. Also, the ROLLUP OF DEATH~! and the “champs lose non-title” booking in the same match. It’s like WWE doesn’t care about repeating things week after week.

The Titus Worldwide team celebrated the win while the champs whined about the loss.

Six-woman tag match still to come.

(Commercial)

The announcers went over the lineup for Elimination Chamber. Matt Hardy vs. Bray Wyatt was added to it.

Bray Wyatt did a promo talking about ending Matt Hardy. That led to Hardy interrupting the promo with each man talking about how the other is a liar. Wyatt said that Hardy had empty promises while Hardy said he had the power of illumination and Wyatt said that Hardy must be silenced. Hardy said that Wyatt must become obsolete. The trash talk continued with Wyatt saying that Hardy will burn and Hardy said that Wyatt will be deleted. Wyatt did his laughing routine and then he stopped. No laugh counter from Hardy, which was a surprise.

Analysis: I was disappointed that there was no Hardy laugh to end it. The rest of it was the usual promo from both guys.

Sasha Banks made her entrance for what appears to be the main event.

(Commercial)

A video package aired about WrestleMania in New Orleans. It is 48 days away as of Monday.

Mickie James was up next rocking the same outfit she wore in the Royal Rumble. She’s looking great like usual and is my favorite in this match that’s for sure. Bayley was up last for her team with a good ovation for her.

The Absolution group of Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville and Paige made their entrance. They did a pre-match promo with Mandy and Sonya talking about their friendship will make it easier for one of them to become Raw Women’s Champion.

Alexa Bliss, the Raw Women’s Champion, made her entrance last for her team.

Sasha Banks, Mickie James & Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss, Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose (w/Paige)

James wanted to start and it looked like Bliss would start, but Bliss backed out and James battled Deville instead. Deville overpowered Banks by driving her into the corner and Rose tagged in with Graves calling her a walking work of art. That’s something I agree with. Bayley battled Rose leading to Rose shoving her in the face and did a hair whip to Bayley’s face. Bayley stomped away on Rose in the corner. Bayley with an overhead suplex, Rose bailed to the floor and the match went to break.

(Commercial)

Back from break, Rose worked over Bayley by kicking her into the heel corner. Bayley sent Rose face first into the turnbuckle. Rose pulled Bayley off the ropes and slammed her face first into the mat. That looked like a rough landing. Bliss tagged into the match with Deville yelling at her for doing that. Bayley sent Bliss into the turnbuckle to try to break free, but Bliss came back with a slap. Sonya slapped on a leg scissors submission around Bayley’s ribs. Bayley with a jawbreaker, but Deville blocked a tag attempt. Banks got the tag, but Rose distracted the ref, who never saw it and made Banks leave the ring. Bayley sent Rose into the corner and Rose collided with Banks. James tagged in against Rose with forearms and a running kick. James kicked Deville out of the ring followed by a flapjack on Rose. Bliss held her hands up to shoe James she wasn’t going to interfere. James with a Thesz Press off the top on Rose and a neckbreaker on Deville. Bliss didn’t want to go in there. Deville grabbed James’ foot and Rose hit a leaping knee. Rose wanted a cover, but James’ foot was under the ropes and the ref didn’t count it. Rose hit a unique suplex with James landing on her stomach. Mickie said something and Cole said she was talking to herself. Deville got the tag and James sent her across the ring with a headscissors. Deville prevented a tag with a takedown on James. Bliss wouldn’t tag in, so Rose tagged in and James hit a double neckbreaker on the heels.

Banks got the hot tag against Bliss with clotheslines, a dropkick and a knee to the face. Banks with a running double knee attack on Deville on the floor. Banks sent Bliss into the turnbuckle followed by a double knee attack off the ropes with Rose breaking up the pin. Bayley back into the ring with a suplex on Rose. Bliss rollup on Banks got two, Banks got two of her own and Bliss whipped Banks into the turnbuckle. Banks rolled up Bliss into a Bank Statement submission and Bliss tapped out. It went 16 minutes.

Winners by submission: Sasha Banks, Bayley and Mickie James

Analysis: **3/4 It was a good tag match where they built up the hot tag to Banks well. There was an interesting dynamic on the heel side with Bliss not wanting to face her “friend” James at all while Deville and Rose got in a lot of offense. Bayley and James sold well like usual. There were a few sloppy moments by Rose in there. It was nothing major, but she was off a bit and still learning out there. Banks was on fire after the tag, which is a strength of hers and I’m not surprised by Banks getting the win for her team. It builds up Banks as a threat to win the Chamber match even though she is not my pick to win.

Post match, Deville and Rose tried to attack Banks after the match. Bayley made the save, but Deville nailed a kick and Rose nailed a knee to the face of Bayley. Deville with a running knee attack on Banks. Bliss was about her teammates kicking ass, but Rose and Deville went after Bliss. James came to the aid of Bliss and they hit a double team DDT on Deville.

The show ended with Bliss and James going up the ramp together while Bayley and Banks were down around ringside and the Absolution group were in the ring. That’s how the show ended at 11:06pmET.

Analysis: It felt like a midcard match and angle that just happened to be in the main event spot this week. I assume there will be a spot in the Chamber match where James goes to trust Bliss and Bliss turns on her to eliminate her. I am picking Bliss in the Chamber match especially because she tapped out here.

Three Stars of the Show

Final Thoughts

I give it a 8 out of 10.

Two good Raw episodes in a row. The main reason is because of the in-ring action and most of it was very good. Seth Rollins putting in over an hour of work was really impressive. Others like Cena, Reigns and Balor really stood out as well. Some fans may find it boring, but not me. I want to see quality in-ring work like that.

The next WWE Raw PPV is Elimination Chamber on February 25. Here’s what we know so far.

Men’s Elimination Chamber Match for a Universal Championship Match at WrestleMania: Braun Strowman vs. Elias (last man to enter the match) vs. John Cena vs. Roman Reigns vs. The Miz (first man to enter the match) vs. Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins

Women’s Elimination Chamber Match for the Raw Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss vs. Bayley vs. Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville vs. Mickie James vs. Sasha Banks

Nia Jax vs. Asuka

Bray Wyatt vs. Matt Hardy

Ronda Rousey’s WWE Monday Night Raw contract signing

Raw Tag Team Championships: Sheamus & Cesaro vs. Apollo & Titus O’Neil – This was added after Raw.

Our Eliminatoin Chamber preview will be up on Friday and I’ll have a live review on Sunday night too.

That’s all for this week. See ya next time for the Smackdown review.

Backstage News on Ronda Rousey's Tag Team Partner at WrestleMania 34

— On this morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, one of the discussions that took place was around the partner for Ronda Rousey in what appears to be a mixed tag team match at WrestleMania against HHH & Stephanie McMahon.

— Kurt Angle looks to be the leading candidate based on the developments at Elimination Chamber, but it’s a no brainer that WWE would love to have the Rock fill that role and ultimately he is their #1 choice. Angle is considered the best bet for a backup, while Dave Meltzer suggested a darkhorse candidate – Rousey’s husband Travis Browne, who has also been training at the WWE Performance Center for many months.

Luke Harper On Braun Strowman's Rise To Stardom, The Wyatt Family & More

Luke Harper recently appeared as a guest on Busted Open Radio with Bully Ray and Dave LaGreca to promote tonight’s WWE Fastlane 2018 pay-per-view. Featured below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On how he got involved with the “Mohawk” movie: “I was out with a knee injury and the director of the movie got a hold of talent relations, who got involved with me. I had a Skype call with the director and he said ‘yeah’. I was on set for 3 weeks and it was shot in Syracuse, New York, which is an hour from where I live. It was shot on a Native American reservation, so everything is real. There is a lot of reality steeped in the movie. There is a lot in the movie that rings true today.”

On his work with The Wyatt Family: “It’s mind-boggling to me (how successful the gimmick was). The Wyatt Family was a very special thing. The 3 of us came together at a perfect time. It was a perfect storm, and that rivalry with The Shield in 2014-2015 was a magical time.”

On whether or not he knew Braun Strowman would develop into the Superstar he is now: “I remember back when he first started, everyone thought we were crazy (when we said he has the talent). Watching how massive he is and then to learn Pro Wrestling that quickly on the highest level you could be at, that’s an impressive thing to do.”

On wanting to be a singles champion and his work as a tag-team competitor: “I think the Smackdown tag-team division is flying right now. Shelton & Gable, New Day and Usos who are primed and I think they need the fresh blood. I think they need us (The Bludgeon Brothers) to do this for them. They have been wrestling each other many times and I couldn’t be happier. We had matches with the Usos 3 years ago and they were some of the best in my career. At the end of the day, I want to be a world champion. I want to be Intercontinental Champion. I also want to be a tag-team champion. If that’s my way in, then I’m willing to do it.”
