SDSU to wrestle Arizona State at Pentagon

South Dakota State University and Arizona State University will hit the mat for a wrestling dual at the Sanford Pentagon on Nov. 11.

The two programs are bringing back two recently crowned national champion wrestlers in Seth Gross (SDSU) and Zahid Valencia (ASU). Gross became SDSU’s first Division I national champion in any sport by winning the 133-pound title against Stevan Micic from Michigan. Valencia completed an undefeated season (32-0) by defeating Penn State’s Mark Hall for the 174-pound crown.

SDSU’s new head coach, Damion Hahn, inherits a Jackrabbit squad that finished the 2017-18 season ranked 12th in the country.

“We’re looking forward to starting our dual meet season by hosting the Sun Devils in front of a hopefully sold-out crowd at the Sanford Pentagon,” said Hahn. “I’m excited for the opportunity to bring the Jackrabbit fans into a great venue and continue to grow excitement for wrestling in the region.”

“We’re excited at the opportunity to compete in the Sanford Pentagon and face a top 20 team in South Dakota State University,” said Zeke Jones, Arizona State head coach. “They have some tough kids, and I know they will be ready to battle.”

The two squads met in dual action last November, with Arizona State recording a 25-13 victory on its home mat in Tempe, Arizona.

Tickets range from $10-$50 and go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. May 11 at Ticketmaster.com and the Sanford Pentagon Box Office. SDSU wrestling season ticket holders will have the opportunity to participate in an online-only presale from 10 a.m. on May 9 to 10 p.m. on May 10. Student tickets start at $8 and are available only at the Sanford Pentagon Box Office.

The remainder of the Jackrabbits’ 2018-19 schedule will be announced at a later date.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Looking at the WWE HOF and the 2019 class

While interest has inevitably decreased over the years, the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony feels like less of an essential part of WrestleMania weekend than ever.

There are a few major reasons why the Hall of Fame ceremony has lost some of its luster. As WrestleMania week has become a destination for promotions from the United States and abroad, fans have to make difficult decisions on how they’re going to spend their time and money.

WON NEWSLETTER: April 9, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Massive Wrestlemania weekend preview

A preview of WrestleMania week leads off this week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Read notes on the business for the week, how the business of WrestleMania has changed, what records are going to be set, a look at how fans changed the week, matches changed over the past few weeks, notes on surprises, and who is scheduled.

Have a look at the HBO Last Week Tonight segment on WWE. It starts with a story about Sherri Martel that is important to understanding a key issue involved here. Look at how the business has changed, what has also stayed the same, and why wrestling talent doesn’t get the benefit of the amount of revenue they drive compared to major sports and entertainment stars.

Also look at the 2019-2020 WWE arena schedule. Look at the foreign tours, the update on Saudi Arabia shows, and house shows that are in danger of being canceled because of the next Saudi Arabia show.

Read about the future of Linda McMahon after leaving Trump’s Cabinet and the position she was up for, the story behind the death of the AAF, Vince McMahon’s XFL plans, how much money Vince has earmarked for the XFL, why one analyst thinks stock will hit $157 per share, and thoughts on upcoming TV deals.

Read coverage of this past week’s UFC show in Philadelphia with match-by-match coverage and business notes on the show.

UFC
Outside several former UFC fighters competing in bare knuckle fighting in Biloxi, MI, Saturday, it’s (thankfully) a fairly quiet weekend for big MMA. If you remember, 2018 Mania week featured Conor McGregor tossing a metal dolly through a bus window in Brooklyn coincidentally enough.
Bellator welterweight champion Rory MacDonald vs. Jon Fitch is expected for the company’s MSG show on June 14th. This would also be a first round match in the Welterweight Grand Prix that will see the title defended in every round.

As expected, Paul Heyman’s contract status with WWE was resolved prior to Brock Lesnar’s TV return Monday night on Raw, reports the Wrestling Observer.

Heyman’s previous contract expired in-between Lesnar’s stints on WWE TV, prompting the two sides to work out a new agreement.

Heyman has multiple irons in the fire, including a reality TV show in the works and a content deal with Yahoo. It required a new contract with WWE to continue as Lesnar’s on-air manager/spokesperson.

Heyman has an important role promoting Lesnar’s return match against Randy Orton at Summerslam on August 21, especially with Lesnar and Orton on separate brands following the brand split.

Kofi Kingston vs. Kevin Owens official for WWE Money in the Bank

Kofi Kingston will officially be defending his WWE Championship against Kevin Owens at Money in the Bank.

After Owens turned heel last week, Kingston vs. Owens was announced for Money in the Bank during the opening segment of tonight’s SmackDown. Kingston did an in-ring interview to open the show and challenged Owens to the title match.

Owens had served as an honorary member of The New Day before superkicking Kingston last week. Owens then said he’s coming after the WWE title and laid out Xavier Woods with an apron powerbomb.

On tonight’s show, Owens accepted Kingston’s challenge and cut a promo where he said Kingston gave people a WrestleMania moment no one will ever forget — but no one believes Kingston is actually championship material. Owens said Kingston doesn’t believe it either and is in over his head. Woods tried to attack Owens but was laid out with a superkick.

Money in the Bank is taking place at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut on May 19. Here’s the updated card for the pay-per-view:

Universal Champion Seth Rollins defending against AJ Styles
WWE Champion Kofi Kingston defending against Kevin Owens
Raw & SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defending the SmackDown title against Charlotte Flair
Raw & SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defending the Raw title against Lacey Evans
