Another New Champion Crowned During NXT Takeover: Phoenix Event

Tonight’s NXT Takeover: Phoenix event saw a couple of titles change hands. Not only were The War Raiders able to defeat The Undisputed Era for the NXT Tag Team Championships during the show, but later on, another challenger managed to win gold. Johnny Gargano defeated Ricochet to win the NXT North American Championship during the event. Gargano and Ricochet have known each other for at least a decade and have competed against each other before, but their match from Takeover from earlier today arguably had more on the line than any of their other previous matches. Ricochet and Gargano tore the house down in their match just as fans expected them to do, but it proved to be Gargano’s night.

Ricochet and Gargano went at it in a back and fourth match that ended up seeing “Johnny Wrestling” win the North American title. However, Gargano had to go to sinister lengths in order to win the match. During the match, Gargano went outside of the ring and exposed the concrete floor underneath the mats. After spending time considering whether or not he should resort to using the concrete to win the match, Gargano did indeed plant Ricochet to the floor. This worked tremendously to Johnny’s benefit as he was able to pin “The One and Only” not long after this. Using the concrete floor is a move that has become a regular part of NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa’s matches, who up until recently was Johnny’s greatest enemy in NXT.

Gargano’s win marks the beginning of his first reign as North American Champion, and it is also Johnny’s first time with singles gold in WWE. He previously held the NXT Tag Team Championships with Tommaso Ciampa. Gargano is also only the third man in history to win the NA title. As for Ricochet, he had been the champion ever since he defeated inaugural champion Adam Cole during the NXT Takeover: Brooklyn event back in August of 2018. He held the title for 161 days before he lost it during NXT Takeover: Phoenix tonight. With Tommaso Ciampa still running NXT as NXT Champion, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the landscape in NXT now that the former #DIY partners represent the brand as champions.

Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey Trading Social Media Shots

Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey continued to be at each other’s throats on Tuesday, one day after Lynch declared that she will challenge the RAW Women’s Champion for her belt at WrestleMania on April 7 at Met Life Stadium in New York.
Rousey initiated the animosity on Tuesday, backing up her comment that she could kill Lynch with her bare hands if she chose to do so. On Instagram, Rousey said the difference between their promos last night is that The Rowdy One spoke the absolute truth while Lynch’s words were all made up. Here’s Rousey’s post:
One big difference between me and you @beckylynchwwe – everything you said last night was fantasy make believe. And every word out of my mouth was a fact. #RondaVsBecky

Lynch didn’t take long to respond, firing back one of her trademark sarcastic shots that both made fun of Rousey and her comments. Lynch said she didn’t dispute Rousey was a killer, she was murdering her time on TV during Monday Night RAW at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix. Here’s the comment from Lynch, who told everyone she would break Rousey’s mystique and kick her ass in front of the world at WrestleMania during RAW:

No, I believe you’re a killer, Ronnie. You were murdering that whole segment until The Man bailed you out. https://t.co/d45HuyV4qh
— The Man (@BeckyLynchWWE) January 29, 2019

Rousey also followed up her comments after Lynch’s response with another shot about the use of the 4 Horsewomen name. After her victory over Bayley on RAW, Rousey has now collected wins over 3 of the NXT 4 Horsewomen – Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks and Bayley. Here’s what Rousey had to say about that:
Down three faux and one to go #4horsewomenvsfauxhorsewomen and that’s with me on my own. Last I checked we hold two titles and you fair-weather “friends” have none. Imagine what’s coming for you when the riders assemble @qosbaszler @jessamynduke @marinashafir ????????????????

Rusev Comments on Wins & Losses, Former WWE Star in Netflix Movie

Rusev recently retweeted a story about his dismal PPV record over the last two years where he has had zero wins. Rusev responded, “I was told it’s not about wins and losses.” This is topical because AEW has wanted to make wins and losses matter in their promotion. In December, Rusev defeated Shinsuke Nakamura on an episode of SmackDown LIVE to win The WWE United States Title. This past weekend he lost the title to Shinsuke Nakamura during The Royal Rumble Kickoff Show. Nakamura would then lose the title to R-Truth on this week’s episode of SmackDown LIVE. Rusev then got a shot against R-Truth shortly after, but would come up short.

Pair of Gophers Earn U23 Team USA Spot

Both a current and a former University of Minnesota wrestling standouts earned a spot on the U23 Team USA roster for the U23 World Championships that are set in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Nov. 21-26.

Sophomore Mitch McKee, 61-kilograms, and Michael Kroells, 125-kilograms, won their respective brackets to guarantee a spot on the Team USA roster.

McKee won his bracket in 61-kilograms and did not give up a single point until his second match in the finals, where he won 15-4.

McKee won every match by tech fall, and after McKee took silver in the Junior World Championships in Tempere, Finland, will take his talents back to Europe and test his luck on the international stage once again.

Gopher alumnus Michael Kroells made his first ever USA team with his impressive run in the 125-kilogram bracket. Kroells marched his way to the finals with some tighter matches. Winning the first match by decision 4-0 and then earning a finals spot with a 13-3 tech fall against Joey Goodhart who had a bye in the first round.

Kroells was able to take the first match of the finals by tech fall, 10-0 over his finals opponent Youssif Hemida. The next round was much closer with Kroells taking the match 9-4.

Junior Steve Polakowski lost his first round matchup by tech fall, and then advanced on a bye in the consolation before he defeated KeVionne Robbins by tech fall, 10-0 to advance to the third place match in the 61-kilogram bracket. Polakowski was defeated, and settled for a fourth place finish.

After receiving a bye in his first round in the 57-kilogram bracket, Skyler Petry but was then defeated by tech fall in the second round, 12-1. Steve Bleise was able to respond after his first round loss in the 70-kilogram bracket. He won his second match by tech fall over Josh Heil. Bleise then fell in his next match 7-6 in a tough match that went down to the wire.

The Gophers had a pair of participants in the 86-kilogram bracket. Alumnus Brett Pfarr had a bye in his first round, and then opened up with a big 12-3 decision victory over Richard Robertson. Then he took on Samuel Brooks for a chance to advance to the finals but was defeated in a tough 4-0 decision.

Faris Karaborni fell in his first match by tech fall, and was able to pick up a victory in the consolation bracket 15-4 before dropping by tech fall to wrap up his time in Rochester.

McKee and Kroells will travel to Poland for the Nov. 21-26 tournament. For McKee, who is a sophomore this season, may be coming off a dual in Stillwater, Okla. against Oklahoma State on Nov. 19, and will make the trip before the Gophers head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Cliff Keen Invitational on Dec. 1-2.

Mickie Gives Her Thoughts on Lynch Following Recent Twitter Feud

Mickie James was recently interviewed by WSVN-TV Entertainment Reporter Chris Van Vliet on a number of topics. Below are the highlights from the interview:
On her recent Twitter feud with Becky Lynch: “Relax folks, it’s Twitter. Come on! I mean it’s cool, she’s the man. That’s cool. And I’m the woman. I said it there and I’ll say it again, women have always been the dominant sex. So if you want to do this whole ‘I’m the man’ thing which I think went out in 2010, if you want to bring that back, that’s cool. But I’m a woman, I’m a grown ass woman, you know what I mean? And I’m proud of it. I love Becky though, I do respect her. I think she’s fantastic, she amazingly talented. I’m just better.”
On being a pioneer of The Women’s Evolution: “There was a difference between the girls who went out and did gravy bowl matches and granted we were all asked to do some of that stuff but I think even still, the matches that I would have with Beth Phoenix or Trish Stratus they were held at different standards. I don’t think there was ever at any time when the boys in the locker room, at least when I went out there, would say this isn’t going to be a good match. I think they knew because I trained with all guys. There weren’t a whole lot of girls working the independent circuit when I started. There were only a handful of really good girls that you could go out there and work with. So I had to work with most of the guys and train with most of the guys so I learned to work like one of the guys. I didn’t want to be good for a girl, I wanted to be as good if not better than all the guys.”

Daniel Bryan posts defense of Brie Bella following Liv Morgan injury

Daniel Bryan is defending his wife Brie Bella after she accidently injured Liv Morgan during last week’s Raw.

Bryan posted a number of Twitter messages showing support for Brie, who gave Morgan a concussion after a errant Yes Kick to the head knocked her out.

“I am proud of how strong my wife is,” he wrote. “After accidentally injuring Liv Morgan last week, the first time Bri’s ever hurt another performer, she’s been subject to a constant barrage of social media attacks. Almost every wrestler has accidentally hurt someone but rarely do you see this kind of hate when it happens.”

He gave several examples where he himself has accidentally injured an opponent, citing a match between him and Randy Orton from 2012 and a match against Nigel McGuinness back in 2009. In regards to the Yes Kicks, he noted that even as of a few weeks ago there was miscommunication in a match where he struck Andrade Cien Almas in the head by accident.

“Despite all of that, never did I receive the backlash Bri did this week,” he concluded. “With all the negative things said about my wife, nobody was harder on her than she was on herself. Thank you to the many people who reached out to support her, both publicly and privately. We all wish Liv Morgan a speedy recovery.”

Morgan hasn’t wrestled since suffering the concussion. She posted a picture on Twitter this afternoon, making her return to social media. She is scheduled to be part of the Super Show-Down card this weekend, teaming with the rest of the Riott Squad to take on the team of The Bella Twins and Ronda Rousey.

WWE CEO Vince McMahon granted a rare on-camera interview to ESPN.com backstage at the Hall of Fame ceremony in Dallas.

McMahon talked to SportsCenter anchor Jonathan Coachman about the Hall of Fame Night being the “most important night for me and most fun-filled night” along with WrestleMania.

“I enjoy this night more than any other in our business. It is an opportunity to give back and recognize those who paved the way for so many of us, including me,” McMahon said.

McMahon also talked about the HOF being a marketing tool to allow the audience to see the wrestlers “break character” and see the “real human being along with the persona.”

Coach closed the brief interview by asking what it’s been like having his son Shane McMahon back in WWE. Vince’s face lit up and he said it’s been “so much fun” having him back in the fold.

Kane still planning on wrestling at WWE Crown Jewel

Click:摩洛哥向导

A spokesman for Glenn Jacobs (WWE’s Kane and the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee) has noted that Jacobs still plans to wrestle at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.

In an article that was published earlier this afternoon, Jacobs’ spokesman Rob Link told the Knoxville News Sentinel that Jacobs’ plans to wrestle at the event have not changed. “Mayor Jacobs won’t speculate on Mr. [Jamal] Khashoggi’s disappearance,” Link said. “However, he and his family are in the mayor’s thoughts and prayers.”

WWE issued a statement on Thursday noting that they are “currently monitoring the situation” following Khashoggi’s disappearance and suspected murder. Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post who has been a frequent critic of the Saudi government, disappeared after entering Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, Turkey on October 2.

The Turkish government reportedly has audio and video evidence showing that a Saudi security team killed Khashoggi inside the consulate.

Saudi officials have denied the allegations that are being made against them and have said that Khashoggi left the consulate shortly after he arrived.

Kane & The Undertaker are scheduled to face Triple H & Shawn Michaels at Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 2. The Independent Journal Review ran an article today that quoted senators urging WWE to rethink the event, and Dave Meltzer reported that “there have been backup plans that are being talked about internally if the show doesn’t take place.”
