New Evolution Appearances, Ellsworth/SD 1000, Callihan Re-Signs

In addition to most of the current women’s division working the Evolution pay-per-view this month, several former female stars and women from the NXT roster have been confirmed to wrestle on the show. Two more names have just been announced to appear at the all-women’s event. PWInsider has just reported that recent Hall of Fame inductee Ivory will be appearing at Evolution. Additionally, Molly Holly will be in town for the event as well. It is unclear what their roles will be as of now, so it is possible that they both may just be making cameos rather than competing in matches. With Evolution set to take place on October 28th, expect to see more names from the past announced for the show in the days to come.
As mentioned earlier, former WWE Superstar James Ellsworth as one of several different personalities that WWE brought in to make an appearance on SmackDown’s 1000th episode last night. However, Ellsworth was never seen on the show, and he instead appeared in a backstage video on WWE’s YouTube channel. According to WrestlingNews.co, the Evolution segment from last night’s show ran too long, causing the segment that Ellsworth was scheduled for to be nixed, and it also led to the Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Rey Mysterio match to be cut short. WWE was also unable to extend the length of time for SmackDown since they are contractually obligated to start the Mixed Match Challenge at 10pm ET.
Fresh off of celebrating one year with the promotion, it appears that Sami Callihan has just agreed to stay with Impact Wrestling for the foreseeable future. Callihan made his Impact Wrestling debut at their Bound for Glory pay-per-view last year, and since then, he has proven himself and has become one of the most talked about members of the roster. He and oVe just defeated the team of Brian Cage, Fenix, and Pentagon Jr. at this year’s Bound for Glory event, and according to PWInsider, Callihan decided to re-sign with Impact not long after that match. This move comes after reports of Impact Wrestling officials encouraging their roster members to sign brand new and long-term contracts with the promotion.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Oct 24, 2016: Pinpointing the day that lead to TNA’s current predicament, UFC layoffs, more – What has been the long-time inevitable but several times delayed financial implosion of TNA can really be traced back to one afternoon. Largely based on a contract with Spike TV, TNA was taking in more revenue than any pro wrestling company in the world aside from WWE through 2014. If a company like ECW would have gotten that type of a deal, they would probably still be flourishing today… Current subscribers click here to continue reading.

Australia unveils starfish-killing robot to protect Barrier Reef

A robot submarine able to hunt and kill the predatory crown-of-thorns starfish devastating the Great Barrier Reef was unveiled by Australian researchers on Friday.

Scientists at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) said the robot, named the RangerBot and developed with a grant from Google, would serve as a "robo reef protector" for the vast World Heritage site off Australia’s northeastern coast.

The RangerBot has an eight-hour battery life and computer vision capabilities allowing it to monitor and map reef areas at scales not previously possible.

"RangerBot is the world’s first underwater robotic system designed specifically for coral reef environments, using only robot-vision for real-time navigation, obstacle avoidance and complex science missions," said Matthew Dunbabin, the QUT professor who unveiled the submarine.

Scientists at Queensland University of Technology hope to reduce the number of starfish, which eat coral, with a robot that can also monitor conditions at the Great Barrier ReefCredit:
ANTHONY WEATE/AFP/Getty Images

"This multi-function ocean drone can monitor a wide range of issues facing coral reefs including coral bleaching, water quality, pest species, pollution and siltation."

Software will also enable the bot to detect crown-of-thorns starfish, which eat coral, and "instigate an injection which is fatal" to the predators, he said, adding that the injection is harmless for other reef creatures.

The starfish have proliferated in recent times due to pollution and agricultural runoff.

The Great Barrier Reef, about the size of Japan or Italy, is reeling from two straight years of bleaching as sea temperatures rise because of climate change.

Experts have warned that the 2,300-kilometre (1,400-mile) long area could have suffered irreparable damage due to the combined effects of bleaching, damage from agricultural runoff and the impact of the crown-of-thorns starfish.

GSP, UFC reportedly come to terms on new multi-fight contract

One of the most popular MMA fighters in UFC history and the man responsible for igniting the interest of an entire country looks to finally be making his way back to the Octagon after a multi-year layoff.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported Wednesday that former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and the UFC have hammered out terms on a new multi-fight contract, ending a long period of negotiation and consistent denials of his return from UFC president Dana White.

Helwani said that the expectation is the Canadian star will return in the third quarter of 2017, but an opponent and date haven’t been announced.

Over the course of the second half of 2016, St. Pierre consistently intimated that he wanted to return to fighting which prompted several fighters (Tyron Woodley, Michael Bisping) to call him out in an effort to secure a “money” fight. It appeared St. Pierre’s return would happen at last December’s UFC PPV in Toronto against middleweight champion Bisping, but both sides couldn’t come to an agreement.

One of the major sticking points has been St. Pierre’s deal with Under Armour, a competitor to UFC sponsor and fightwear provider Reebok, but Helwani didn’t have any notes on that. Another issue dating back to when St. Pierre was an active competitor was the company’s drug testing policies, something that would appear to be alleviated with USADA in place.

St. Pierre last fought in November 2013 at UFC 167, successfully defending his welterweight gold in a controversial split decision over Johny Hendricks.
