Daily Update: UFC International Fight Week, CMLL, NJPW, CIA

This is the biggest week in UFC history coming up, with shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and championship matches all three nights. There’s been lots of promotion. An interesting note is if the Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt fight will be mentioned on Raw, as this would be the last Raw episode leading to the fight. Probably not, since aside from a web site article when it was announced, WWE has done nothing to promote it. It’s pretty clear whatever WWE is getting out of the deal wasn’t contingent on the buy rate or else they’d have pushed it. Although she has to take it and can’t respond, you can just imagine Stephanie McMahon seething about what Lesnar said at the UFC media call this past week about how he doesn’t give a shit about what she thinks.

The UFC preview show airs tonight at 10:30 p.m. Eastern and 7:30 p.m. Pacific on FS 1. It’s a one hour show on the big four fights on PPV: Lesnar vs. Hunt, Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones, Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes and Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo. FOX will be airing the show on 7/9 at 2 p.m., or a few hours before the card starts.

We’re looking for reports on today’s WWE show in Huntington, WV to [email protected].

We’re also looking for your thoughts on today’s New Japan Kizuna Road show, thumbs up, down or in the middle, best and worst match to [email protected].

Raw will be Monday night from Columbus, OH. Given that Raw is on July 4th, it is likely to be the lowest rating for a Raw show in the history of the show. Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz in a rematch from Smackdown, Rusev vs. Titus O’Neil for the U.S. title and a Team USA vs. Team International 16 man elimination match have all been announced. Shane McMahon is scheduled to return.

Smackdown is Tuesday night in Toledo. No John Cena or Seth Rollins advertised. Dean Ambrose, A.J. Styles and Kevin Owens are the top names advertised.

Both the New Japan show today and the CMLL iPPV on Friday night were really good. Matt Sydal & Satoshi Kojima & Ricochet (pictured above) beat The Young Bucks & Kenny Omega to win the trios titles. The Young Bucks & Omega all came out wearing WWE New Day T-shirts. Proof that New Japan is very different from WWE where such a thing could never happen.

The movie “Marauders” with Dave Bautista had a limited release this weekend. It can also be purchased via digital download and on iTunes. Bautista plays an FBI agent investigating a series of bank heists. Bruce Willis also stars.

Sexy Star unmasked at a boxing show last night in Mexico City and said she was going into that sport. She hasn’t been wrestling anywhere but Lucha Underground for a while having quit AAA. She’s talked about going into boxing for some time and her husband, Jhonny Gonzalez, is a well-known boxer, and before that she dated the even bigger name boxer Erik Morales.

Ten million bottles of cheap Spanish rosé ‘passed off as French wine’

British consumers may have been victims of a huge wine swindle, according to fraud investigators who believe some 10 million bottles of cheap Spanish rosé have been illegally sold as more expensive French wine.

The rosé, falsely labelled as ‘vin de France’ (French table wine) or more expensive IGP (protected geographical indication) wine, was sold by four “very large” French distributors, according to Alexandre Chevallier of the French consumer fraud office.

“These cases of Spanish wine fraudulently passed off as French concern more than seven million litres of wine [equivalent to 10 million bottles],” he said.

The results of an investigation carried out in 2016 and 2018 and revealed by Le Parisien newspaper on Monday have shocked France. For many French wine drinkers, rosé is the summer tipple of choice. Consumption has risen sharply during the current heatwave in much of the country.

Britain is one of the largest export markets for French rosés and investigators believe some bottles may have ended up in the UK.

Criminal proceedings are about to be launched, officials said, but they have not named the vineyards or merchants accused, or revealed whether arrests have been made. If convicted of fraud, vendors risk lengthy prison terms and hefty fines.

The wine was either falsely labelled as French, or given misleading labels that revealed its origin only in small, hard-to-read letters at the bottom of the label on the back of the bottles. On the front, labels sometimes showed a French flag or pictures of French villages.

A wine distributor based near the Spanish border is accused of concealing the origin of three million litres of Spanish rosé, equivalent to four million bottles, sold as French wine over three years.

“We first received warnings about ‘Frenchification’ towards the end of 2015,” Mr Chevallier said. “We started investigating, checking producers, importers, restaurants and distributors.”

The investigators were horrified to find evidence of Spanish wine being passed off as French in more than a fifth of the establishments they checked.

The profits generated from the fraud are still being evaluated, but are believed to be enormous. A litre of Spanish rosé cost about 30p in 2016. Passed off as a French IGP (protected geographical indication) wine, it would fetch up to three times that amount wholesale, while a 75 ml bottle would sell from about £4 to £10 retail.

It is the latest of a series of scandals that have tarnished the reputation of the French wine trade.

In March, police discovered that more than 66 million bottles of ordinary table wine had been passed off as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other prestigious Côte du Rhône appelations.

Weeks later, one of Bordeaux’s most highly regarded châteaux was accused of illegally adding sugar to some of its 2016 Margaux vintage. Château Giscours said the mix-up was accidental.

In 2010, 12 winemakers and merchants in southern France were convicted of selling millions of fake pinot noir to E&J Gallo, a California-based wine producer and distributor. At the trial, defence lawyers noted that no American consumers had complained.

Superchef showdown as Alain Ducasse threatens legal action against rivals for control of Eiffel Tower kitchens

Alain Ducasse, France’s best-known superchef, is to launch legal action against two rival cooks for “conflict of interest” after losing a battle to keep control of his famed Eiffel Tower restaurant.

Mr Ducasse, the first chef to win the maximum three-star rating from the Michelin guide for three separate restaurants in the same year, has been overseeing the prestigious Jules Verne restaurant on the second floor of the tower since 2007. Alain Soulard, one of his protégés, runs the slightly less top-notch 58 restaurant on the first floor.

When Donald Trump made a state visit to Paris last year he and the first lady dined with President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, at the Jules Verne. Mr Ducasse served them sole with hollandaise sauce, Rossini beef fillet and chocolate soufflé.

However, with the contract up for renewal on October 1, the head of the board operating Paris "Iron Lady", as the Eiffel Tower is known, informed the superchef’s backers last week that it had plumped for a rival team.

The winners were Frédéric Anton, whose Le Pré Catelan is among the most fashionable restaurants in Paris, and Thierry Marx, arguably France’s most media-friendly cook, a Top Chef juror famed for creating cooking schools for the deprived.

Jules Verne and the 58 are leased by Sodexo, the catering group that signed up Mr Ducasse as its front man more than a decade ago. But before the lease was up for renewal, Mr Ducasse jumped ship and moved to Sodexo’s biggest rival, Elior.

Sodexo now backs the two rival chefs.

When the Ducasse team received the call from the head of the board of SETE (which operates, maintains and organises events at the Eiffel Tower) announcing that he had lost the tender on July 5, the chef’s initial reaction was one of "total incomprehension given all that he has done for the Eiffel Tower over the past 10 years and its international fame,” Frédéric Thiriez, the chef’s lawyer, told the Telegraph.

“Then he felt a sense of revulsion.”

The Ducasse camp accuse the consultancy tasked with choosing the winning candidate, Nova Consulting, of writing up a “totally biased” report “systematically” in favour of Sodexo. It dubbed “surprising” that the consultancy found the other camp’s “culinary project” better than Mr Ducasse’s given that he is “one of the world’s two chefs with the most (Michelin) stars”.

 JACK GUEZ/AFP

The Ducasse offer, it said, offered higher profitability (€15.2m per year compared to €14m for Sodexo), was the only one guaranteeing an overall payback of €120m during the 10-year lease.

Mr Thiriez said the chef intended to launch a legal challenge next Monday with an administrative judge for “conflict of interest”.

He said that Nova Consulting had recently been employed as strategic adviser to Sodexo Prestige, the unit in charge of running the Eiffel Tower eateries, as well as other Sodexo initiatives.

That relationship cast “doubt on the impartiality of the procedure”, he said.

“We want the judge to annul the decision and start the process from scratch with a different consultancy,” he added.

Ludovic Badin, lawyer for the Eiffel Tower operator, declined to comment on the tender process for reasons of “confidentiality” but told Le Parisien that while Sodexo had employed Nova Consulting, so had Elior.

“True but only for a very small contract,” said their lawyer. “Whether one or both parties previously employed the consultancy, that is still enough to cast doubt on their impartiality.”

Even if the appeal fails, the final decision lies with Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist mayor of Paris, who has expressed a desire for Eiffel Tower eateries to use local produce to lower its carbon footprint.

There are political overtones to the tussle as Mr Ducasse is close to Mr Macron, with whom Ms Hidalgo has a notoriously fractious relationship. She could back Mr Ducasse as a peace offering or, on the contrary, choose to show she calls the shots by backing his rivals. The town hall has a month to make a pronouncement on the case.

Nova Consultancy has declined to comment.

Who is Maria Butina, the gun activist and student charged in US with spying for Russia?

To some she was the flame-haired Russian face of their country’s gun lobby. To others she was a journalist. Some saw her as a mere student.

But to the US government, she was a suspected spy.

Now Maria Butina, 29, is facing federal conspiracy charges, appearing in court on Wednesday in Washington DC.

Butina’s lawyers acknowledge that she has been intensively questioned by the Senate intelligence committee, but insist that she is just a student.

Yet she has been on the FBI’s radar since at least 2015.

"It’s psychosis. A witch hunt," her father, Valery Butin, was quoted as saying Wednesday by the Altapress website in her hometown of Barnaul.

Born in Barnaul, in Siberia, to an engineer mother and…

Australia’s most populous state now entirely in drought as farmers given authority to shoot kangaroos

Australia’s most populous state was declared entirely in drought on Wednesday and struggling farmers were given new authority to shoot kangaroos that compete with livestock for sparse pasture during the most intense dry spell in more than 50 years.

Much of Australia’s southeast is struggling with drought. But the drought conditions in the state of New South Wales this year have been the driest and most widespread since 1965.

Click Here: collingwood magpies 2019 training guernsey

The state government said Wednesday that 100 percent of New South Wales’ land area of more than 800,000 square kilometers (309,000 square miles) was now in drought.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair said farmers were enduring one of the driest Southern Hemisphere winters on record.

"This is tough. There isn’t a person in the state that isn’t hoping to see some rain for our farmers and regional communities," Blair said in a statement.

Farm reservoirs have dried up and crops are failing.

State and federal governments are providing financial help, but not enough for many farmers.

With dry conditions forecast to continue for the next three months, farmers had to decide whether to continue the expensive and laborious task of hand-feeding cattle and sheep or sell their livestock.

The state government on Wednesday also lifted the number of kangaroos that farmers are allowed to shoot and reduced bureaucratic red tape facing land holders applying for permission to shoot.

The requirement to tag dead kangaroos to keep a tally of the number shot across the state had been dispensed with.

"Many farmers are taking livestock off their paddocks, only to then see kangaroos move in and take whatever is left," Blair said.

"If we don’t manage this situation, we will start to see tens of thousands of kangaroos starving and suffering, ultimately leading to a major animal welfare crisis," he added.

But Ray Borda, president of the Kangaroo Industries Association of Australia, which represents commercial shooters who hunt kangaroos for meat and leather, raised animal welfare concerns about the regulation changes.

"Anybody on the land that will make a phone call to the Department of Environment can get permission to shoot almost whatever they want to shoot and it’s unaudited and unchecked and that’s our concern – animal welfare," Borda told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The government would have been better off subsidizing professional shooters to reduce kangaroo numbers more humanely, he said.

"We see this as probably the worst possible outcome for the kangaroo, but I’ve got to emphasize we do understand the plight that farmers are in," Borda said.

On Running joins forces with Bang and Olufsen

Swiss sports brand On has teamed up with Danish luxury audio brand Bang
and Olufsen to create what they are calling the “ultimate running kit”.

Built on what the two brands describe as “shared design philosophies and
a fascination for deepening human experiences” the collaboration aims to
bring together running and music in a new way.

The ultimate running kit features On’s latest elite-level competition
shoe, the Cloudboom, alongside a limited edition of Bang and Olufsen’s
first true wireless sports earphones, Beoplay E8 Sport On Edition. The
special edition features both Bang and Olufsen’s and On’s minimalist logos,
highlighted by colour contrasting aluminium rings and a cloud pattern.

“It has always been a dream of mine to create the ultimate competition
running shoe”, said Olivier Bernhard, co-founder of On in a statement. “The
Cloudboom is created with the inputs of our elite athletes who know what it
takes to run your fastest marathon ever. At the same time, I love the
Clouboom’s silhouette. It incorporates the core DNA of our brand –
minimalist design and maximum performance – a principle we share with Bang
and Olufsen.”

The Cloudboom is On’s ultimate competition shoe, created with elite
athlete input, and features twin CloudTec cushioning technology to provide
an instant fit and long-distance comfort, which the brand states is
“everything you need for your fastest marathon ever”.

In addition, the trainer features a carbon-fibre infused Speedboard and
a single layer of engineered mesh ensures low weight and maximum
breathability while a new grip-rubber compound in an advanced traction
pattern is designed for optimised traction, while the extreme rocker shape
of the bottom unit helps the rolling motion for even more propulsive
power.

Cloudboom will be available on On’s e-commerce as well as at Browns, Mr
Porter, Pro Direct and The Running Works, priced at 170 pounds, while the
Beoplay E8 Sport On Edition, released in “very limited” quantities will be
priced 300 pounds.

Stroll insists Racing Point ‘second quickest in Hungary’

Lance Stroll says that the Racing Point RP20 proved itself to be the second-quickest car on the grid in Hungary, beaten only by the Mercedes which it so closely resembles.

Stroll qualified in third place behind the two Silver Arrows on Saturday, and gained a place when Valtteri Bottas suffered a start line miscue at the start of the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The early round of pit stops in response to a rapidly drying track jumbled up the running order and left him briefly down in fifth place, but he was back in the top three by lap 16 only to be demoted again by a recovering Bottas midway through the race on lap 35.

Even though he’d also been overhauled by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Stroll remained confident in his car’s capabilities.

“I truly believe we have the second fastest car here this weekend which gives me a lot of positivity moving forward this year,” he told Sky Sports F1 after the finish. “We’ve had three races now and looked strong in all of them.

“It’s been a solid weekend from start to finish,” he continued. “I definitely think a podium was possible today.

“[Even so] I’m really happy with P4, it’s a good result and I have to thank the team for such a great job today and all weekend,” he said. “It was fun to fight Max at the start of the race and run in P2 in the changeable conditions.”

He added that losing out to Bottas had been largely the result of a difference in strategy calls between Racing Point and Mercedes rather than reflective of the strength of the cars.

“We were staying out a bit longer towards the middle of the race where Valtteri undercut us,” he explained. “He was behind us, he went for the stop and we were expecting some more rain so we were trying to drag out that stint a little bit longer. And unfortunately the rain never came.

“He just managed to simply undercut us,” Stroll stated. “By the time we pitted a couple of laps later, he was eight seconds up the road – and we were comfortably P4 at the stage.

“Maybe we could have done things differently, but you can always say that after the race. That’s racing and we’ve got to be happy with fourth,” he said. “We actually ended up in quite a lonely race to P4, but the main thing is that we were able to score a good haul of points for the team.

“It was such a complex race and I’m looking forward to reviewing it and learning what we can for the races to come.”

Stroll’s team mate Sergio Perez qualified in fourth and finished in seventh place after suffering wheel spin on the damp grid when the lights went out at the start,

“It’s always tricky to recover at the Hungaroring, but we tried our best and I had some good battles,” Perez said. “I had a few adventures out there too and I ran wide in the dry and was lucky not to touch the wall.

“When I did get some clean air, I could show the pace of the car, but the time I lost on lap one was costly. The main thing is that we’ve scored more points for the team.”

The strength of Racing Point’s car this year has certainly caused a stir in the F1 paddock and led to complaints that the design’s close resemblance to that of last year’s Mercedes is a breach of the rules.

Renault formally protested the design of the RP20 based on the similarity of the brake ducts between the two cars. The French manufacturer formally protested the design again after the end of today’s race.

The matter is currently under investigation by the FIA which has asked for reference parts and components to be supplied by both teams.

By renewing their protest again this week, it means that the outcome of the protest will also apply to the results of the race in Hungary.

Racing Point insist that the protest is without merit and that they own all of the intellectual property and designs of the RP20 as the rules stipulate.

The team is currently fourth in the constructors championship, tied on 40 points with McLaren, while Renault is further back in sixth place with 12 points.
