The Manchester United and England legend bagged himself an assist with his excellent free-kick finding Jack Marriott, who put the Rams in front.

It looked as though Rooney’s party was going to be spoiled when Elliot Simoes levelled the game just after the break.

But a goal from Marytn Waghorn ensured it would be a winning start for Rooney.

There was one other game in the Championship on Thursday night, with Swansea playing host to Charlton.

The Addicks went into the game with the news of unpopular owner Roland Duchatelet relinquishing control of the club.

However, the same old problems continued for them as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

Yan Dhanda’s first-half strike was enough to propel the Swans into the play-off places and seal a first win in three.
The injury-ravaged Charlton are now just five points clear of the bottom three after their miserable run of just one win in 14 matches continued.
