Jordi Murphy ruled out of Kings clash

Ulster have had flank Jordi Murphy ruled out of their PRO14 Round Three fixture against Southern Kings on Saturday but welcome back Jean Deysel.

Murphy sustained an ankle ligament injury in last Saturday’s 30-29 victory over Edinburgh. He joins Rory Best and Jacob Stockdale among others on the sidelines.

However, the Belfast club have been boosted by the news that Deysel, Tom O’Toole, Clive Ross and Tommy O’Hagan are all now available for selection after recovering from injury.

All Blacks lose Sonny Bill Williams to illness

Sonny Bill Williams has pulled out of New Zealand‘s matchday squad for Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test with South Africa due to illness.

Israel Folau, David Pocock to start for the Wallabies

David Pocock and Israel Folau have been named to make their return to the Wallabies side ahead of Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina on the Gold Coast.

Pocock has been battling a neck complaint while Folau has trained strongly after suffering an ankle injury in the opening Bledisloe Cup clash.

Folau has been named on the right wing by coach Michael Cheika with Dane Haylett-Petty to retain the number 15 jersey after two standout displays at full-back.

Adam Coleman returned to Wallabies camp on the Gold Coast last night after the birth of his first child in Melbourne on Sunday and will start on the bench against the Pumas.

Prop Sekope Kepu is set to earn his 97th Test cap on Saturday night with the veteran also named amongst the reserves, after missing the matchday 23 for the Wallabies’ 23-18 win over South Africa last weekend.

Former Wallabies scrum coach Mario Ledesma has been a revelation as new head coach of Argentina, with the Pumas having already earned a comfortable win over South Africa in the Rugby Championship last month.

Australia and Argentina have met twice before at Cbus Super Stadium with the Wallabies sneaking home with single-digit wins on both occasions.

Argentina reshuffle front-row for Wallabies clash

Argentina coach Mario Ledesma has made three changes to the starting lineup for Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against the Wallabies.

Ledesma was disappointed with his side’s scrummaging against the All Blacks, saying after the match they were ‘torn apart’ in that area and has reshuffled his front-row as a result.

Santiago Medrano has replaced Gaston Cortes, with Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro moving to the loosehead.

“We got torn apart so we need to get better there,” Ledesma said after his side’s 46-24 defeat to the All Blacks in Nelson last Saturday.

“It’s been the same for the last couple of years. Unfortunately other teams go hard at us there because they consider we’re really strong.”

Meanwhile, experienced flanker Pablo Matera returns to the starting XV in place of Tomas Lezana, with veteran Juan Manuel Leguizamon coming in to the matchday 23.

Gonzalo Bertranou comes back in to the side at scrum-half, with Martin Landajo taking up his usual role in the replacements after a rare start last week.

Argentina: 15 Emiliano Boffelli, 14 Bautista Delguy, 13 Matias Moroni, 12 Jeronimo De La Fuente, 11 Ramiro Moyano, 10 Nicolas Sanchez, 9 Gonzalo Bertranou, 8 Javier Ortega Desio, 7 Marcos Kremer, 6 Pablo Matera, 5 Tomas Lavanini, 4 Guido Petti, 3 Santiago Medrano, 2 Agustin Creevy, 1 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro
Replacements: 16 Julian Montoya, 17 Santiago Garcia Botta, 18 Juan Pablo Zeiss, 19 Matias Alemanno, 20 Juan Manuel Leguizamon, 21 Martin Landajo, 22 Bautista Ezcurra, 23 Juan Cruz Mallia

Ma’a Nonu returns to the Blues

The Blues have announced that former All Blacks centre Ma’a Nonu will return to play for them during the 2019 Super Rugby Championship.

The 36-year-old will bring his rugby career full circle in New Zealand, after playing for Toulon in the Top 14 for three years.

After deciding it was time to return to New Zealand with his wife Andrea and three children, the powerhouse midfielder has taken up a 12-month contract with the Blues, which will be his third stint with the Super club.

The Blues believe Nonu will play a key role at the club, adding crucial experience to a youthful Blues backline and be influential in a 2019 season that will pose new challenges.

“Our review showed that our backline, while talented and exciting, lacked an experienced figure on a regular basis in the midfield due to injury,” said Blues head coach Tana Umaga.

“Next season will throw up some other challenges with a new format without the international break. And players in line for the World Cup, like Sonny Bill Williams, will likely be monitored more closely.”

Umaga said that included the likes of Rieko Ioane, who he wants to see back in his likely All Black position on the wing as a priority in preparation for the Rugby World Cup.

“We think Ma’a can play an important role for us and I am sure he can deliver on the field as well as help guide our young players,” he added.

Nonu said he was grateful for the opportunity to play for the Blues again.

“Hopefully next year will be a year to build and to be successful,” he said.

“That is the challenge I am looking forward to.

“I know the Blues have had some tough times in the last few seasons but I am excited to play with some of the young and up-and-coming players who will have long careers and rejuvenate this place.

“And I am looking forward to be under the watchful eye of Tana who was a mentor when I was coming through, so I am looking forward to doing my best for him and the franchise.”

Nonu said he is impressed with the facilities at the Blues which he says rival those at the top level in France.

“It is a nice facility, top of the range in this country that I have seen,” he added.

“They have a lot of facilities like this in France but this is the best I have seen here. Hopefully we can use what we have here as tools to perform on the field.”

Nonu says he will bring his experience to the club and its young players.

“I have been playing rugby a long time. I’ve known first-hand the highs and the lows of a playing career on and off the field and I am looking forward to giving my best and proving that I can still play at this level.”

Izack Rodda inks new Reds deal

Wallabies lock Izack Rodda has committed his future to Australian Rugby by re-signing with Rugby Australia and the Reds until the end of 2020.

The ten-Test forward has become a mainstay of Michael Cheika’s side ahead of next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan as he builds his second-row combination with Adam Coleman.

The 22-year old, who only made his Test debut last year, led the line in the Wallabies’ 23-18 win over South Africa at Suncorp Stadium last Saturday.

Rodda said: “I’m very excited to re-sign for two more years and I’m really looking forward to sticking with the Reds and the Wallabies.

“The Reds gave me my first crack and my first contract. I was one year out of school and I haven’t really looked back since.

“It’s an unreal program that’s been growing each year and now that Thorny is the boss, it’s just going in the right direction as a club and all the players want to be there to keep growing that great vibe.

“Honestly, if you had asked me three years ago where I would be, I wouldn’t have said here with the Wallabies.

“It’s come very fast but I have loved every moment of it. In saying that, I still need to work very hard to keep my spot. There’s a lot of competition in my position coming through both the Reds and the Wallabies so it’s going to keep me on my toes.

“I want to try get in the World Cup squad then cement a spot in the 23, and hopefully win a World Cup,” Rodda said.

Rodda went to senior school in Ipswich, Queensland after growing up in Evans Heads on New South Wales’ north coast where he played junior rugby for the Ballina Seahorses.

The second-rower is preparing alongside his Wallabies teammates ahead of Australia’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast this Saturday.

Betting preview: Rugby Championship, Round Four

Ahead of the fourth round of the Rugby Championship, we take a look at the best bets from the two games; New Zealand v South Africa and Australia v Argentina.

New Zealand v South Africa

The All Blacks will be looking to make it four wins out of four on Saturday as they face a stumbling Springbok outfit at Westpac Stadium.

Steve Hansen’s charges are an incredibly short price with some bookmakers – one pricing them at 1/66 – with the average around the 1/16 mark. Rassie Erasmus’ men, meanwhile, are best priced 12/1 with SpreadEx to cause a surprise, with the handicap line at 22 points with many.

The All Blacks are averaging 41 points per game so far this Rugby Championship and it’s hard to see them struggling to hit around that on Saturday, with the Springbok defence set to be tested by New Zealand’s game breakers while their attack has been poor outside of the maul.

New Zealand didn’t start brightly last week against Argentina so there might be value in backing a Springbok to score the first try. South Africa are 9/1 to open the scoring in Wellington with a try or if you fancy them to knock over a penalty first up that’s 13/5 with Betfair.

However, if the All Blacks come out firing with Beauden Barrett and Aaron Smith back in tandem at half-back, then it could be a long night for the Springboks, with New Zealand by 21-30 points 16/5 and 31-40 points 4/1 (both Betfair). Surely it won’t finish any larger than that?

One bet that might be an interesting punt is New Zealand winning to nil, which is 33/1 with Sky Bet. It might sound a long shot but if New Zealand do shoot out the blocks then there might be a scenario for the Boks where penalties are not enough. As we say it’s an outside bet.

Australia v Argentina

The battle for second place in the Rugby Championship will continue on the Gold Coast on Saturday as the Wallabies play host to the Pumas. Currently, it’s the Springboks in second on six points with Argentina and Australia behind on four, but that is set to change this weekend.

Australia bounced back from successive losses to New Zealand with a much-needed win over South Africa last week, which has boosted spirits. Meanwhile Argentina could not follow up their win over the Boks but did impress against the All Blacks, despite finishing 22 points adrift.

Australia are 3/10 with several bookies, including Bet365 and Ladbrokes, while Argentina are best priced 16/5 with Black Type. The handicap is around the 10-point mark and betway have set their odds at Evens for this, which of course is better than the normal 10/11.

The return of David Pocock and Israel Folau is a boost for the Wallabies and they should have too much quality here, with the win by 11-20 points looking a decent bet at 11/4 (Betfair). A victory by 13+ is 11/8 (Sky Bet) but we can’t see value there as it won’t be a runaway win.

While Argentina showed plenty against New Zealand we were impressed by the Will Genia-Kurtley Beale-Matt Toomua axis for Australia and they will only get better together the more they play. That should create plenty of chances for Folau, who is best priced 8/1 with Bet365 to grab a try.

On the other side it’s also hard not to be impressed by the Pumas wings Ramiro Moyano and Bautista Delguy and they are worth a punt to get over the whitewash. Moyano is 16/1 with Betfair while Delguy is 14/1 (Bet365).

PRO14 Preview: Friday

There are two games scheduled in the PRO14 on Friday as Edinburgh face Connacht at Murrayfield while Munster play host to the Ospreys.

Edinburgh v Connacht

Edinburgh boss Richard Cockerill has made three changes to the side that faced Ulster in Belfast last weekend, with flanker Hamish Watson, wing Duhan van der Merwe and centre James Johnstone all coming into the starting XV.

Scotland star Watson – who was unavailable for selection last weekend due to the birth of his first child – is named in the back-row with fellow international Luke Hamilton who switches to Number eight in the place of the injured Bill Mata.

Mark Bennett drops out of contention due to injury and is replaced by Johnstone in midfield, whilst Van der Merwe returns to action after missing out on the trip to Belfast last weekend.

The South African winger is named in the place of Tom Brown, who fails to recover after picking up a knock again
In the back-three, Blair Kinghorn starts at full-back alongside Scotland international winger Dougie Fife and the once again fit, Van der Merwe.

Matt Scott – who makes his first Edinburgh appearance at BT Murrayfield since May 2016 – is joined in the midfield by Johnstone, while Henry Pyrgos and Simon Hickey both make their home debuts after being named at half-back.

An unchanged front-row sees captain Stuart McInally pack down alongside WP Nel and Pierre Schoeman, with Ben Toolis and Grant Gilchrist continuing their partnership in the boiler room.

The aforementioned Watson returns to action at openside flanker, as Hamilton and Jamie Ritchie complete the back-row.

Elsewhere, 23-year-old back-row Magnus Bradbury is once again fit and named among the replacements, whilst summer recruit Juan Pablo Socino is also included on the bench, and if called upon will make his competitive debut for the club.

For Connacht, Ireland international scrum half Kieran Marmion is set to make his first start of the Guinness PRO14 campaign.

The game also marks the return of Bundee Aki who is named on the bench for the Irish province’s first away trip of the season.

Marmion’s return is one of four changes to the Connacht starting side that secured a bonus-point win over Zebre last weekend, with young Sligo prop Conan O’Donnell, lock Ultan Dillane and winger Niyi Adeolokun also included.

21 year old Academy player Paul Boyle is again named at number eight after his two tries and man of the ,atch performance against Zebre. He is part of an unchanged back-row with Captain Jarrad Butler at openside and Sean O’Brien at blindside.

Adeolokun’s inclusion on the wing sees him join a back three that includes Matt Healy on the opposite wing and Tiernan O’Halloran at full-back. The centre pairing of Eoin Griffin and Kyle Godwin is also retained with Aki set to feature off the bench.

Munster v Ospreys

Munster head coach Johann van Graan has named a strong matchday squad to take on the Ospreys at Irish Independent Park in Cork.

Captain Peter O’Mahony makes his first start of the campaign along with fellow returning international Andrew Conway as Joey Carbery and Tadhg Beirne make their first starts for the Irish province.

Chris Cloete makes a welcome return in the back-row with the flanker out of action since February due to forearm and groin injuries.

There are 11 changes to the side beaten by Glasgow Warriors in Scotstoun last week.

Full-back Mike Haley and wing Darren Sweetnam keep their places with Conway completing the back three.

Dan Goggin comes into the side at inside centre with Sammy Arnold at 13 as Duncan Williams and Carbery form the half-back pairing.

It’s all change in the front five as James Cronin, Rhys Marshall and Stephen Archer come into the front-row.

Marika Koroibete re-signs with Rebels

The Melbourne Rebels have received a boost with the news that winger Marika Koroibete has committed to the club for the 2019 Super Rugby season.

The 14-times capped Test winger will be on the end of a superstar Rebels backline next season and his re-signing is another vote of confidence in the club’s highly regarded program and his enjoyment of international rugby.

Koroibete admitted staying in Melbourne was an obvious choice for him.

“I am very happy to be continuing with the Rebels in 2019. I joined the club when I first came to professional rugby and they have supported me to become a Wallaby. Now I want to repay their belief in me and be the best winger in the world. Melbourne is where I believe I can achieve that.”

Melbourne Rebels head coach David Wessels praised Marika’s commitment and determination to become a better player and his impact on the young talent in Melbourne.

“Marika has been an outstanding member of our club and community since he became a Rebel and we are very proud of what he has achieved,” Wessels said.

“At the same time, we want to help him to achieve even more. Marika is already a world-class winger and he has a key role to play in educating our emerging players. There is no doubt he is going to be a key part of our quest for a Super Rugby title in 2019.”

Koroibete’s re-signing confirms another key piece of the Melbourne Rebels 2019 squad, following the recent recruitment of number eight Isi Naisarani and Melbourne-born Wallaby, Matt Toomua, who will join the Rebels in May 2019 following the conclusion of his commitments with the Leicester Tigers in the UK.

“We improved a lot in 2018 and also made a lot of mistakes. We have learned even more about ourselves and what it is going to take for us to become the successful team we want to be,” Wessels added.

“We want the people of Melbourne to be proud of us and confirmation that Marika is with us on that journey is just part of the momentum we are building.”
