Mario Andretti mourns passing of twin brother Aldo

The Andretti family endured a tough end to the year, losing on Thursday its co-patriarch and former racer Aldo Andretti, the twin brother of 1978 F1 world champion Mario Andretti.

It’s been a tough year for the racing dynasty with Aldo’s passing at the age of 80 occurring just eleven months after his son, IndyCar and NASCAR driver John Andretti, died of cancer in January.

In a tweet Thursday afternoon, Mario Andretti wrote that “Aldo Andretti, my loving twin brother, my partner in crime and my faithful best friend every day of my life was called to heaven last night. Half of me went with him. There is no eloquence. I’m shaken to my core.”

As inseparable twins, Mario and Aldo embarked on the same impassioned motorsport journey that started when they sneaked through the Monza woodlands to witness the 1954 Italian GP, the young pair mesmerized by the fantastic battle between Juan Manuel Fangio and their idol, Alberto Ascari.

They carried the memories and their burning passion with them to America when the Andretti family emigrated to the promised land a year later.

As they settled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, the presence of a half-mile dirt track offered the perfect venue and opportunity for the twins to take their passion to the next level.

Savings from working at a local gas station incited them to acquire an old Hudson which they refurbished and subsequently raced together

But Aldo’s driving career was cut short by a serious crash that left him in a coma for four days. He made sporadic appearances behind the wheel thereafter but felt the incident had taken away his edge.

However, Aldo’s passion for motorsport remained intact, and he was an ubiquitous presence at race tracks in the US alongside Mario and later on as the most fervent support of his son, John.

“Though Aldo’s life took a different direction than brother Mario’s, Aldo forever shared a passion for racing and was a true motor enthusiast and entrepreneur,” Andretti Autosport said in a release on Friday.

“He could often still be found on the racing circuit supporting and following the careers of the family.”

IndyCar charger Marco Andretti also paid tribute to his great uncle.

Gucci teams with The North Face for new collaboration

Gucci and The North Face have teamed to create a cross-category
collection that brings together the signature aesthetic of each
brand.

Featuring ready-to-wear, footwear and luggage, the collaboration
supports commitments both Gucci and North Face have made to
eco-sustainable activities. Throughout the product offering,
recyclable materials are used as well as archival fabrics.

The Gucci x North Face ready-to-wear assortment includes outerwear
such as goose-feather down padded coats, a bomber and a vest, as well
as shirts, skirts, dresses and jumpsuits. Designs are inspired by
original North Face styles from the 70s. Several pieces feature a
combined logo that blends North Face’s three curved lines and Gucci’s
green and red Web stripe.

The luggage comes in eight new graphic patterns, which were all
designed collaboratively between the two brands. Each pattern features
bright colors and a variety of either Gucci signature motifs or
different versions of the new combined logo. The luggage offering also
includes two new backpacks and two new belt bags, designed in the same
exclusive prints.

Finally, the collaboration includes a single footwear style: a
gender-neutral hiking boot with a chunky Goodyear-welted sole. It
comes in three colors, brown black or cream, and is made of leather
with striped laces and the collaborative logo printed on the side.

Todt warns of more coronavirus disruption in 2021

FIA president Jean Todt has warned that motorsport can expect to suffer more disruption from coronavirus to its plans for 2021.

This year’s Formula 1 season got off to a delayed start after the scheduled first race in Australia in March was called off just minutes before FP1 was due to start, after members of the McLaren team tested positive for COVID-19.

The season did eventually get underway at the start of July and managed to successfully stage 17 races packed into just over five months, albeit without the familiar ‘flyaway’ races.

Todt was speaking at the official end-of-season prize giving ceremony hosted from Geneva on Friday evening. The recipients including F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton joined the event via video conferencing.

While hailing the achievement of completing a full season of races, Todt warned that the disruption was far from over with February’s WRC Rally Sweden already having been cancelled.

“2020 was a great season with a lot of creativity,” he said. “Who could have guessed one year ago, when we met in Paris, that we would have three grands prix in Italy?

“Back-to-back [Grands Prix] on the same circuit in Austria, at Silverstone, an original [first time configuration] in Bahrain, a Grand Prix in Turkey?” he continued

“That is really a credit to Formula 1,” he said. “I also want to highlight the role played by Chase Carey and his leadership of Formula 1, working with FIA, when you see what has been achieved to limit the number of victims of COVID-19 in motor racing.

“But unfortunately it is not over. It is not like the season is ending and we start from a white piece of paper,” he cautioned. “Lockdown is still going to happen – confinement, the virus, is there

“I think half of next year, in my opinion, will not be as we could have expected to have in a normal season.

“There has been progress. We are expecting a vaccine, so that will be good for the population and good for the planet to be able to enjoy that.

“If I had to commit on ‘back to kind of normal’, I think it will be a different life after the COVID-19 crisis.

“So I am sure that over the next days we will hear quite a lot of potential changes on the different calendars – not only F1, but on other calendars too.”

Williams appoints Jost Capito as Chief Executive Officer

Williams Racing has appointed former Volkswagen motorsport boss Jost Capito as its new chief executive officer, a responsibility the German will take on from February 1, 2021.

Williams also confirmed on Thursday that interim team principal Simon Roberts has been designated permanently in the role.

Capito’s four-decade involvement in motorsport has seen the German fulfill executive roles with Porsche, Ford and Volkswagen, but he also enjoyed a brief stint at McLaren in 2016 before returning to Volkswagen to manage the company’s Volkswagen R GmbH and Volkswagen Zubehor GmbH road-car subsidiaries.

Capito will report directly to Matthew Savage, Williams Chairman, and will take full responsibility for the day-to-day running of the company.

“It’s a great honour for me to join Williams Racing during these exciting and demanding times for both the team and for Formula One,” he said.

“It is an honour to be a part of the future of this storied team, and one that carries such a poignant name in the sport, so I approach this challenge with great respect and with a huge amount of relish.”

Lyst x StockX ranking: those were the Top 10 sneakers of 2020

Fashion search engine Lyst and resale platform StockX have teamed up for their ranking of the most popular sneakers of 2020 and compiled their Top 10 Sneakers of 2020 list based on searches on Lyst and resales via StockX. Without wanting to give too much away, let us just note that Nike dominates the list and that Adidas’ Yeezy Boost 350 is not the number one for the first time in five years.

No. 10: Jordan 1 Retro High NC to Chi Leather (Women)

With over 30,000 pairs resold on StockX, this Jordan 1 sneaker (pictured above) was the best-selling women’s sneaker of 2020. “The number of exclusive releases for women is growing almost twice as fast as the overall sneaker market,” noted StockX. On the Lyst platform, search queries for the Air Jordan 1 increased by 433 percent year-on-year.

No. 9: Nike Space Hippie 03 Vast Grey Hyper Crimson

The Nike Space Hippie was the best-selling sustainable sneaker on StockX in 2020. It was resold for more than double its retail price of 180 US dollars (around 148 euros or 133 British pounds). According to the resale platform, the markup for sustainably produced sneakers is twice as high as for classic sneaker models. On Lyst, searches for sustainable sneakers increased by 89 percent year-on-year.

No. 8: New Balance 992 Joe Freshgoods No Emotions Are Emotions

Following the release of the Joe Freshgoods, searches for the 992 model on Lyst increased by a whopping 1,303 percent. Resales of the sneaker doubled since its drop in February, reaching nearly 1,000 US dollars (almost 825 euros or close to 740 British pounds), reports StockX. The market share of New Balance sneakers increased threefold in the last year.

No. 7: Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Carbon

Released in early October, the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Carbon turned out to be the fastest-selling Yeezy of 2020; over 15,000 pairs were sold on StockX in the first two weeks of October alone. Even though it did not make the top spot this year, according to StockX, the Yeezy 350 v2 is bought four times as often as any other Adidas model.

No. 6: Nike SB Dunk Low Grateful Dead Bears Orange

This eye-catching, hyped up model from the Grateful Dead collaboration with Nike resold for more than 3,000 US dollars (almost 2,500 euros or 2,220 British pounds), which is almost 3,000 percent above the retail price of 110 US dollars. “The sneakers are considered the most profitable of the year,” StockX said. The average resale price of Nike SB Dunks has also tripled since last year and just one week after the release date in mid-July, searches on Lyst increased by 46 percent.

No. 5: Nike SB Dunk Low Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Dunky

Another Nike collaboration enjoyed great popularity, this one with US ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s. The ice cream-inspired sneaker was one of the most anticipated and limited sneaker releases of the year, according to StockX. The average price was 1,600 US dollars (around 1,320 euros or almost 1,200 British pounds), which is 1,600 percent higher than the retail price of 100 US dollars. “The sneaker is the only model listed among the Top 20 sneakers of 2020 with the highest price, highest premium and highest StockX gross volume,” summed up StockX and Lyst.

No. 4: Nike SB Dunk Low Travis Scott

Another Nike sneaker ranked high: The SB Dunk Low Travis Scott from the early 2000s made a big comeback in 2020; on Lyst, search queries for the shoe increased by 443 percent between February and March. “One of the model’s most successful collaborations was with Travis Scott and his ‘Cactus Jack’ design, which has already increased in value by 50 percent since its release in February, reselling for over 1,600 US dollars [around 1,320 euros or almost 1,200 British pounds],” said StockX.

No. 3: Air Jordan 1 Retro High Dior

In third place is the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Dior, which bears the monogram of the French luxury fashion house Dior as well as the Wings logo and a silver ‘Air Dior’ hang tag. With a retail price of 2,000 US dollars (almost 1,650 euros or 1,480 British pounds) and an average resale price of 10,000 US dollars (around 8,237 euros or 7,400 British pounds), the Air Jordan 1 Retro High was the most expensive sneaker release and is one of the 20 biggest releases of 2020 in terms of StockX gross merchandise volume. On the Lyst Index, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Dior is the most sought-after product for men.

No. 2: Air Jordan 4 Retro Off-White Sail

In second place, another collaboration: Virgil Abloh worked on an exclusive women’s sneaker for the first time with Nike’s Jordan Brand. According to StockX, the release is ranked as the biggest Off-White release of 2020.

No. 1: Air Jordan 13 Retro Flint

The Air Jordan 13 Retro Flint became the best-selling sneaker of 2020 thanks to the Michael Jordan documentary “The Last Dance”. But not only that, with 40,000 pairs sold in the first month of release, the Air Jordan 13 Retro Flint also became the best-selling sneaker in StockX history. The success of the documentary series also made itself felt on Lyst: Here, the number of search queries increased by 169 percent.

Yuki Tsunoda confirmed at AlphaTauri for 2021!

AlphaTauri has confirmed that Yuki Tsunoda will make his Formula 1 debut and partner Pierre Gasly at the team next season, in place of Daniil Kvyat.

The 20-year-old Japanese driver is part of both the Red Bull Junior Team and Honda’s young driver programme and this year has been racing for the Carlin team in Formula 2.

Tsunoda had been widely tipped to get the nod after securing enough points to earn a Formula 1 superlicense as a result of his third place in this year’s F2 championship, having previously won the F4 Japanese Championship in 2018,

His maiden season in F2 saw him secure seven podiums, two feature race victories and a sprint race win.

He’s taking part in this week’s young driver test in Abu Dhabi having previously driven an older spec car at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola.

“Red Bull has been following Yuki’s career for a while now and I am sure he will be a great asset to our team,” commented AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost on Wednesday.

“Watching him in Formula 2 this year, he has demonstrated the right mix of racing aggression and good technical understanding.

“During the test in Imola in November when he drove our 2018 car, his lap times were very consistent over a race simulation, he progressed throughout the day and gave our engineers useful feedback.

“His integration with the Honda engineers has been seamless, which certainly helps. At the test in Abu Dhabi this week, he proved to be a fast learner and that he is ready to make the step to Formula 1.”

Tsunoda himself was delighted to be able to confirm his promotion to the top rank of motorsport.

“Like most racing drivers, it has always been my goal to race in Formula 1, so I am very happy with this news,” he said. “I want to thank Scuderia AlphaTauri, Red Bull and Doctor Marko for giving me this opportunity.

“And of course everyone from Honda, for all their support so far in my career, giving me great opportunities to race in Europe,” he continued.

“I must also thank the teams that I have raced with to get to this point, particularly Carlin, with whom I have learned so much this year.

“I realise that I will be carrying the hopes of a lot of Japanese F1 fans next year and I will be doing my best for them too.”

Tsunoda will be the first Japanese driver to compete in F1 since Kamui Kobayashi participated in the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

McLaren moving forward, but ‘deficits’ remain – Seidl

McLaren F1 boss Andreas Seidl commended his team for the step forward it has achieved this year but says “a lot of deficits” will need to be reduced for the papaya squad to close the gap with F1’s front-runners.

McLaren concluded its 2020 campaign as the third best team on the grid after delivering a solid result in Sunday’s Abu Dhabi GP.

The Woking-based outfit made steady gains this season in the wake of a series of significant structural and operational changes implemented in 2019.

Next season will see McLaren reunite with engine supplier Mercedes, a change that many believe will deliver another step forward. But Seidl warns that F1’s current pacesetters – Mercedes and Red Bull – will likely remain out of McLaren’s reach in 2021.

“I think we need to stay realistic,” said the German. “Despite the good result we have this weekend and, despite the great outcome for us in the championship side, with P3, I think we know exactly where we are.

“There’s still a huge gap to the cars in front, especially the Mercedes car.”

Catching up with F1’s leaders and winning races consistently on merit is a multi-year plan for McLaren. But Seidl recognizes that this year’s installment proved conclusive on several fronts.

“I think the most important thing is to first of all see that the team this year, under the leadership of James Key, has produced a very competitive car,” he said. “It is a step forward compared to last year.

“It was great to see also that despite all these challenges in the pandemic, that the team kept pushing flat out back home in engineering, and in production, to continuously bring updates to the track, which in the end, kept improving the performance of the car.

“And of course it’s a great finish to the season, knowing that at this track, at this specific event, we had the third fastest car.”

But as McLaren looks to the future, Seidl knows that several foundation pillars still need to be poured at Woking for the team to give Mercedes a serious run for its money.

“We know what the gap to Mercedes is. It is not something we will close from one year to the next year,” he explained.

“We still know that we have a lot of deficits within the team in terms of organisation, in terms of infrastructure, which we need to close first.

“But again, we have a clear plan of how we want to reduce these deficits. It will take time. But I’m confident that if we do the right things on the team side, we can close these gaps in some years.”

Ferrari’s Mekies says Camilleri retirement a total ‘surprise’

Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies says the Italian outfit was “surprised” by the news of CEO Louis Camilleri’s sudden retirement but insists chairman John Elkann’s interim role as chief executive will ensure the team’s “stability and continuity”.

Camilleri unexpectedly announced on Thursday his departure from the helm of Ferrari for “personal reasons”.

However, it appears the 65-year-old has been battling the coronavirus, and while he is now out of harm’s way, the difficult period has encouraged him to take a step back from his corporate responsibilities.

Camilleri, a long-standing Philip Morris executive, had taken over the reins of Ferrari in July 2018 following the untimely passing of Sergio Marchionne.

“It was a surprise for all of us when we received the note from our chairman,” admitted Mekies, who is overseeing the Scuderia’s operations this weekend with team boss Mattia Binotto remaining in Maranello.

“None of us were aware, but it’s the way it goes for this kind of situation. I’ve seen what our chairman communicated in terms of the reasoning, it’s understandable.

“Louis has been very hit badly with COVID and even though it was not life-threatening, it’s been very tough and I’m sure it’s not the only reason but certainly it’s something that I guess at the stage where he is and [with his] achievements it is probably something that makes you think your priorities differently.”

While the Egyptian-born American’s presence on the F1 scene has perhaps been less prominent than that of Marchionne, Camilleri has nevertheless been a strong supporter in the wings of Ferrari’s involvement in the sport.

Fiat-Chrysler and Ferrari chairman John Elkann will take over Camilleri’s chief executive responsibilities on an interim basis.

“It’s a shame because the level of support we got from Louis, from our chairman, through to Mattia, has been incredible in these two years,” Mekies explained.

“Especially this year, in crisis time and you always say it’s in crisis times that you find out how this thing goes. So the level of support we got was incredible, he was certainly one of the strong drivers of this.

“The good news for us is that our chairman is stepping in for the interim role and therefore it could not be better to give us stability and the right continuity in terms of support.

“We will try to finish the year on a good note and all regroup at the factory with Mattia and the management team.”

Fittipaldi hopes ‘to keep a foot in F1’ in 2021

Haas substitute Pietro Fittipaldi says his “ideal scenario” for 2021 would be to race in IndyCar while keeping a foot in Formula 1 with a reserve role.

The 24-year-old Brazilian and grandson of F1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi was drafted in by Haas to replace Romain Grosjean at Sakhir, a temp job that extends into this weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Opportunities for Fittipaldi to race in F1 next season are non-existent unfortunately, but the Brazilian could return to IndyCar, a series in which he competed in 2018 with Dale Coyne Racing until his program was abruptly ended by a crash in a round of the WEC at Spa where he suffered a pair of broken legs.

Fittipaldi acquitted himself well on his F1 debut at Sakhir, finishing down the order but just four seconds behind Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen after 87 laps.

“I am using this opportunity to help me secure deals for next season,” he said in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. “For sure, I would like the opportunity one day to come back as race driver.

“I know for next year that’s not possible. I’d like to still keep a foot in Formula 1.

“But you know, if I can keep a foot in Formula 1 and race IndyCar or something – that would be my ideal scenario. That’ll be really a dream for me. That would be great.

“But… who knows if an opportunity comes in the following years for me to come back and race in Formula 1?

“I really enjoyed it. I’m going to miss it now. I’m a little spoiled because now I raced in Formula 1 and I want to come back…

While a race seat in F1 is unavailable for the Brazilian, a reserve role would be the next best thing.

“The only possible role I can have in Formula 1 next year, since there aren’t really any race drives available, would be to continue as a reserve driver.

“So for sure I’d be open to continue with Haas. I haven’t spoken to Gunther [Steiner, Haas team boss] about it yet. That depends a lot on what I’m racing.

“I have to prioritize the comeback to racing full time next season. But like I said, I want to still stay in Formula 1.

“And in IndyCar? It is a goal for next year. In fact, I raced in IndyCar before, I adapted well to the car, we had top 10 finishes, when I was racing injured. So, I know I can do well there. And it’s a great series with great drivers.

“So if I can get the opportunity to race there next year and still be in Formula 1, it would be the ideal situation.”
