Ladders For Migrants Campaign Answers GoFundMe Border Wall Effort

In a world that seems upside down at times, a new GoFundMe campaign has been launched to counter a Florida man’s crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a wall to separate the U.S. border with Mexico. The new “Ladders for Migrant Children” campaign, launched by Charlotte Clymer, of Washington, D.C., sets a $100 million goal and had raised more than $72,000 in 24 hours.

“We saw some folks are raising money for a border wall to keep out our migrant siblings and fellow human beings, who are fleeing violence and persecution and whose tragically-underpaid labor is essential to the U.S. economy,” Clymer wrote, noting that it “seems like a bad idea on countless levels for everyone involved.”

Instead, “maybe we should focus on human rights and creating a community that reflects our supposed values,” Clymer wrote.

The “Ladders for Migrant Siblings” post drips sarcasm and “isn’t really about ladders at all,” but “about lifting people up,” Clymer wrote.

“If this seems ludicrous, we welcome you to the coalition of reasonable adults,” she wrote. “Should we not reach our goal — or should they (ahem) not reach theirs — all funds raised will go to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) , a Texas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.”

The GoFundMe account created by a Florida man to raise money for President Trump’s promised wall to shore up border security had raised about $12 million by mid-day Friday, five days after it was created.

The border wall, which Trump has used as a bargaining chip to avoid a government shutdown Friday, is expected to cost about $21.7 billion.

At a rate of $1.7 million daily, the crowdfunding campaign would have to run for 35 years to raise the money needed to build the wall, Clymer wrote, adding that “we wanna make sure ladders are ready to send over to our undocumented friends and help them.”

“You see, they’ll never reach their goal, but no matter how much we raise, we’re going to reach ours,” she wrote.

Clymer credited Twitter user @HoarseWisperer for coming up with the idea, and also gave props to @NancyLevine and other advocates at RAICES who are raising money to help asylum seekers.

She also invited critics to find her on Twitter — @cmclymer — and pass along “misspelled remarks full of racist vitriol.”
