The Johnnie wrestling team hosts its first dual of the 2014-15 season with a 7 p.m. bout against St. Olaf this Friday, Jan. 23, in Sexton Arena. SJU will split for the Lakeland Duals on Saturday, Jan. 24, while the bulk of Friday’s lineup travels to face No. 6 Augsburg for a 2 p.m. dual on Sunday, Jan. 25.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Division II MSU-Moorhead won the first eight matches, four by two points or less, en route to a 34-6 wrestling win over Saint John’s on Jan. 16 in Moorhead. Senior Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.) erased the shutout for SJU (3-12 dual record) with a pin in 6:20 at 197 pounds. He is now 7-1 on the season and is ranked seventh nationally by D3wrestle.com. Junior Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) saw his 14-match win streak come to an end with a 9-7 loss in double overtime at 141 pounds. He picked up a three-point near fall near the end of the second period to gain a 7-4 lead but ran out of time for the pin. Henle surrendered a reversal in the third period and the Dragons’ Philippe Walker accrued over a minute of riding time to send the match to overtime. Following the first overtime (sudden victory), Henle chose down in the first 30-second frame but could not escape. Walker recorded a reversal with 10 seconds left to earn the win. Ranked as high as seventh nationally by D3wrestle.com, Henle is now 20-5 on the season, with all five losses against Division I or Division II student-athletes. SJU dropped three other matches by two points or less. Senior Evan Guffey (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) fell to Blake Bosch, who is ranked sixth in Division II, by a 2-0 score at 133 pounds. Sophomore Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) lost by a 3-1 decision at 165 pounds and freshman Nick Pegelow (Eagan, Minn./Eastview) suffered a 3-2 loss at 184 pounds.

A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf (1-2 dual record) forfeited three weights and fell by a 51-3 score to No. 3 Concordia-Moorhead its last time out on Jan. 16. The Oles’ previous appearance on the mat at Central’s Under Armour Invitational on Jan. 10 went much better, however. Senior Carl Elmer won the 157-pound weight class, while freshman Sameh Almousa and junior Adam Woitalla tied for third at 149. Junior Zach Gibson is currently ranked ninth nationally by D3wrestle.com at heavyweight.

LAST YEAR: Then-No. 21 SJU wrestling took advantage of three forfeits in a 30-14 win at St. Olaf last year on Feb. 14 (2014) in Northfield. Both teams tallied three wins and forfeited the match at 125 pounds. St. Olaf started the dual at 149 pounds with a pin before the Johnnies tied it with a pair of decisions from sophomoreBranden Schorr (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) and Brandon Seppelt ’14 at 157 (8-5) and 165 (11-6), respectively. James Roach, who was ranked as high as second nationally by the NWCA, gave the Oles their last lead of the dual with a technical fall at 174 pounds. SJU earned a forfeit at 184 pounds and junior Josh Willaert (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) bumped up to 197 and earned a pin in 1:59. Zach Gibson registered a 7-4 win over John Scepaniak ’14 at heavyweight. SJU ended the dual with a pair of forfeit wins (133 and 141 pounds) following the double forfeit at 125.
SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 22-0 against St. Olaf since the 1990-91 season and has outscored the Oles 826-193 during that span.
THE OTHER GUYS: The Johnnies are scheduled to wrestle the Milwaukee School of Engineering (3-4 dual record, 11 a.m.); the host Muskies (0-4 dual record, 12:30 p.m.); and Wisconsin-Platteville (1-4 record; 2 p.m.). Platteville’s Cole Ferguson, who is ranked eighth by D3wrestle.com at 125 pounds, is the lone nationally-ranked wrestler from the three teams.
A LOOK AT AUGSBURG: Augsburg (7-3 dual record) is ranked sixth nationally and wrestles a pair of duals before hosting SJU Sunday afternoon. The Auggies visit Ridgewater tonight and host Concordia-Moorhead Friday evening. The team, which went 3-2 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, currently has five nationally-ranked wrestlers:

LAST YEAR: The Johnnies lost four matches each by three points or less in a 28-9 loss to then-No. 7 Augsburg on Feb. 16 in Collegeville. Mike Fuenffinger gave the Auggies a 6-0 lead with a pin of junior John Wells (Janesville, Wis./Milton) in 5:24 at 125 pounds. The match was Wells’ first since Jan. 11. Chad Bartschenfeld scored a takedown with 27 seconds left to hand Alex Peck ’14 a 6-4 loss at 133 pounds before Henle put SJU on the scoreboard with an 11-4 win, one point from a major decision. Joe Hessing ’14 led by as much as 6-2 but Augsburg’s Will Keeter recorded a takedown with 45 seconds left to cut it to 7-6 and send the match into overtime with the additional point for riding time. Keeter won the match 9-7 with a takedown 20 seconds into the one-minute, sudden-death overtime. Ryan Arne ’14 built an 8-2 lead and held on for an 11-7 win, thanks to a late takedown in his favor, at 157 pounds. His opponent, Rashad Kennedy, bit Arne’s forearm after the match and was disqualified, which gave SJU three additional team points (serving as a forfeit) and cut its deficit to 12-9. The bizarre action failed to spark the Johnnies, however, as Augsburg won the final five matches. The Auggies’ Justin Bowland won the battle of high-school teammates with a 6-1 decision over Seppelt and Erickson fought back from an 8-4 deficit, only to lose by a 10-8 score at 174 pounds. Tommy Teigen tallied a 13-2 major decision over Willaert at 184 pounds and Matt Hechsel, ranked fifth nationally, edged Michaelis 3-0 at 197.
