From ‘useless waste of money’ to ‘superb vs Man City’ – Jamie Redknapp on why Manchester United man Fred deserves more credit

The Red Devils earned the bragging rights in Manchester with a 2-1 win thanks to first half strikes from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Unfortunately, the derby was overshadowed by a video on social media appearing to show a Man City fan direct a monkey gesture towards Fred in the second half.

The Brazilian was subject to huge hostility from the section of Man City fans at the Etihad Stadium as he prepared to take a corner and was also struck on the back of the neck by an object thrown at him.

City released a statement after the match stating they are aware of the video in question and are ‘working with Greater Manchester Police in order to help them identify any individuals concerned’.

They also promised to issue lifetime bans to any individuals found guilty of racial abuse.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Sunday morning a 41-year-old male has been arrested in relation to the incident.

This should not detract from Fred’s performance, however; the midfielder was excellent and caused Pep Guardiola’s side all sorts of problems.

Fred has generally struggled since joining the Red Devils, but Redknapp had some very nice words for the midfielder.

In his Daily Mail column, the former Liverpool midfielder wrote: “The player I’m most pleased for is Fred.

“The stick he received was remarkable. From ‘useless’ to ‘waste of money’, he was called it all. Maybe he is not the answer for Manchester United in the long term. Maybe he won’t be their midfield linchpin for years for to come.

“But he has dug deep and refused to let the critics win. He was superb against City. In the same way everyone was quick to criticise, let’s give him the credit he deserves, too.”

The win at Man City capped off a good week for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who got the better of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham three days earlier.

But Redknapp is still not convinced the club have turned a corner just yet.
