Yves Bissouma passes medical ahead of Tottenham Hotspur move

Fabrice Hawkins reports this afternoon that Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma has passed his medical ahead of a €29m move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Mali international had come close to joining the North London side in January, and has always been set on making the move to the Champions League club.

The 25-year-old, formerly of Lille, had impressed at Brighton over the last four seasons in the Premier League, making 124 appearances and scoring six goals.

He was also a target of Monaco, as the Ligue 1 side sought to make up for the departure of French international Aurélien Tchouaméni for Real Madrid with a new midfield signing.

Instead, he joins the team managed by Antonio Conte. He becomes the English team’s third signing of the summer after the arrivals of goalkeeper Fraser Forster and the Croatian wide man Ivan Perišić.

In the Ivory Coast-born midfielder’s time in Ligue 1, he made 55 appearances and scored 4 goals, including a long-range free-kick against Toulouse in a relegation decider at the end of his second season. While in the north of France, he was notably managed by Marcelo Bielsa, who briefly deployed him as a full-back as well.

Official | Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes extends contract

Lyon have this morning announced the contract renewal of Brazilian midfielder Thiago Mendes, who has committed his future to the club until the end of the 2024/45 season.

The 30-year-old, who arrived from Lille in 2019, made 29 league appearances in what was a difficult season on and off the pitch for Les Gones, establishing himself as a regular under manager Peter Bosz.

Overall, he has just over a century of appearances for the club in three seasons, during which time he has registered one goal. He has appeared both in midfield as well as in central defence, his versatility proving key over the course of the campaign for Lyon.

The Brazilian’s renewal, which comes as his previous contract was expiring in just over a year, comes a week after the return of Alexandre Lacazette to the club, to much fanfare.

Lyon will be hoping that the striker’s return, as well as the potential signing of Corentin Tolisso on a free transfer, will signal the dawn of a new era built around home-grown players as they look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign that saw them miss out on Europe entirely. In any case, Thiago Mendes will be a central part of that.

Luis Campos in direct contact with Renato Sanches

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that PSG sporting adivser Luis Campos is in direct contact with Renato Sanches (24) as he looks to make the Lille midfielder his first signing since taking up the role at the Parisian club.

Sanches looked close to a deal and have been in discussions since January. They have also agreed personal terms with the player, but are yet to strike a deal with Les Dogues.

Campos was responsible to bringing Sanches to Lille in 2019, where he helped Lille win the Ligue 1 title in the 2020/21 season.

Meanwhile, progress is also being made on the Vitinha (22) deal, with a five-year contract for Campos’ compatriot being prepared. The club are also still in talks with Inter Milan over the signing of Milan Skriniar (27) after their opening bid for the defender was rejected.

Sanches made 25 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille last season, scoring twice and registering 5 assists.

Paulo Fonseca on the verge of being named Lille manager

Former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca is set to be announced as the new Lille manager today, according to Saber Desfarges. The Portuguese is set to sign a two-year deal and replaces Jocelyn Gourvennec, who left the club last week.

Fonseca is set to be officially announced as Gourvennec’s successor on Tuesday afternoon and he is already in Lille to finalise the deal. He is set to bring four members of staff with him.

Gourvennec and Lille reached a mutual agreement for the termination of their partnership after a disappointing season in which they not only failed to defend their title but also missed out on all forms of European football for next season.

Fonseca has been without a club since leaving Roma in 2021. Before his time in the Italian capital, Fonseca enjoyed a highly successful spell at Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won three successive domestic titles in Ukraine.

Braga interested in signing Sikou Niakaté from Guingamp

L’Équipe report tonight that Portuguese side Braga are interested in signing Sikou Niakaté from Guingamp, the defender having spent the past season on loan at Metz.

The Frenchman, who made 12 appearances in the top flight as Les Grenats suffered relegation after finishing 19th, will not stay on in Lorraine and the Breton management are prioritising a permanent transfer for him.

Braga’s offer, though, is for a loan deal. The 22-year-old’s contract with Guingamp expires in three years. Last year’s fourth-place finisher in the Portuguese top flight are expected to come back with a new offer in the coming days.

Niakaté came up through the youth academy at Valenciennes before moving on to Guingamp, where he made 55 appearances for the Ligue 2 side over two campaigns before moving east on loan.

In any case, the French youth international will ostensibly not stay on with Metz as they start life in Ligue 2, despite the permanent option included in the deal.

Marseille meet with Justin Kluivert’s agent after Monaco’s €15m enquiry

As reported by RMC, Marseille have opened talks with representatives of Roma’s Dutch forward Justin Kluivert after his loan spell with OGC Nice came to an end at the end of this season.

The player’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta – who took over from Mino Raiola after he sadly passed away earlier this year, spoke with OM officials on Thursday over the 23-year-old joining the Velodrome club this summer.

Kluivert’s Roma contract has just one season left to run and he isn’t part of Jose Mourinho’s plans in the Italian capital. Although his form fluctuated wildly with Nice last season, the forward’s 12 goal contributions in 31 games across all competitions was enough to convince OM of his worth in French football.

Monaco are also said to be pursuing the Dutchman and the Principality side have been quoted €15m.

With coach Jorge Sampaoli reportedly considering his future over a slow start to the window, the club were given a boost this week as French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, gave Marseille the green light on their 2022/23 budget, easing restrictions on wages.

Brest’s Paul Lasne has signed for Paris FC

As reported by Loïc Tanzi, Brest’s veteran midfielder Paul Lasne (33) has signed for Ligue 2 side Paris FC, following the expiry of his contract with the Breton club this month.

The 33-year-old will make his return to the second division for the first time since 2011, when he guided Ajaccio to promotion. The capital’s second club will hope that the Frenchman can make a similar impact, having slid from the second automatic promotion spot to fifth last season. Paris FC then went on to miss their opportunity via the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

Having come through the Bordeaux youth teams, Lasne has played for a variety of French clubs, including Chateauroux, Ajaccio and Montpellier, for whom he played 148 games over five seasons.

The defensive midfielder was used somewhat less by Brest since his arrival in 2019, making only 59 appearances. This was partly the result of a cruciate ligament injury at the end of the 2020/21 season, which kept him out of the starting lineup for almost 12 months.

Lasne becomes Paris FC’s third recruit of the summer, after the arrivals of Mehdi Chahiri (25) on loan from Strasbourg and Pierre-Yves Hamel (28) from Lorient.

Possible Neymar PSG departure faces ‘major financial obstacles’

As reported earlier by RMC Sport, Neymar is now considering his future at PSG – but any deal for the 30-year old Brazilian will face major obstacles such as the transfer fee and the winger’s imposing salary demands. This is also exacerbated by Neymar’s automatic 2027 contract extension, reported by L’Équipe last week.

The market is currently not totally receptive to the first signals sent by PSG surrounding Neymar’s departure. Only Chelsea, Manchester United, and Newcastle United have the heavy financial fire-power needed to make a deal with PSG this summer. This is problematic for Neymar, as he has historically ruled out a move to the Premier League in the past. Whilst Barcelona would be the preferred option for the Brazilian, the Catalonian club simply don’t have the finances to pull-off such a move.

The World Cup is quickly approaching for Neymar, whose made it his major objective for next season – it could be the last chance to win the most coveted trophy in world football. Therefore, the former Barcelona man is desperate to play at the highest level consistently, so that he is in the best form possible running into the November tournament in Qatar.

FEATURE | Moussa Dembélé – Provocateur and marksman, the best is yet to come

Ibrox, March 11th, 2018. From just inside his own half, Celtic midfielder Scott Brown launches a speculative ball towards his centre forward. Despite the relative lack of danger, panic ensues in the Rangers defence. I’ll let Hugh Burns of Rangers TV take over the commentary from this point: “WHAT’S THE GOALIE DOIN’ TOM? WHAT’S THE GOALIE DOIN’? Dembélé gets Celtic back on level terms…”

After some slapstick defending from the Rangers rear-guard, Moussa Dembélé, then wearing the green and white of Celtic, poked a lobbed finish over the onrushing Wes Foderingham. The Frenchman has made a career of scoring this sort of goal, and revels in ruffling the feathers of opposition players and supporters.

Such was his knack for doing this, not to mention his all-round impressive form for Celtic, that Lyon prized him away from Glasgow in the summer of 2018. The €22m transfer represented a record sale for a Scottish club at that time, surpassing the €15m Southampton paid Celtic for Virgil Van Dijk in 2015. That fee, payable over five years, required some creative engineering from both parties as the then Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was reluctant to sell his main striker without a ready-made replacement so close to the transfer deadline.

Fearing the move may not materialise, Dembélé took to twitter to fire some cryptic shots at his manager. “A man without his word is nothing. A real man keeps his word.” The jab at Rodgers was telling, and spoke to the determination Dembélé had to return to his native France. Twenty goals in his debut season at Lyon, and 24 during the following year, justified the price tag and led to interest in the forward back on the British Isles prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frank Lampard, then manager of Chelsea, had been monitoring the striker since his days in Scotland and even touted Oliver Giroud as a makeweight in any potential move. However, the transfer failed to materialise and, with Lampard being replaced as by Thomas Tuchel shortly afterwards, Chelsea dropped their interest in Dembélé. The striker failed to replicate this form following the return from the COVID-19 lockdown and, following a slow start to the 20/21 Ligue 1 season where he only registered a single goal, he was loaned out to Atlético Madrid as a replacement for the departing Diego Costa. His time at the Wanda Metropolitano will largely be remembered for a worrying collapse during a training session due to a drop in blood pressure. He played only 95 minutes during his brief spell at the club.

Following the instalment of Peter Bosz as Lyon manager at the beginning of the 21/22 season, Dembélé returned to favour for Les Gones. An impressive return of 22 goals has resuscitated his reputation as a proficient scorer in one of Europe’s top five divisions. Still only 25, the striker of Malian descent has plenty to offer a Champions League level club and with Lyon failing to secure European football for next season, they may decide to cash in now as he enters the final year of his contract. A potential move to the Premier League has been mooted but there will be no shortage of offers for Dembélé as he enters the prime of his career.

An astute provocateur on and off the pitch Dembélé has lately been seen winking in jest at a West Ham sending off and further endearing himself to the Celtic faithful by goading Rangers fans following their recent Europa League final defeat. Off field antics aside, Dembélé has displayed enough scoring nous at this stage of his career to warrant respect. Still only 25, the best is surely yet to come from the former Hoops striker.

Official | Alphonse Areola joins West Ham United on a permanent deal

As confirmed by the London club PSG and France international stopper Alphonse Areola has joined West Ham United on a permanent deal.

The former Bastia and Fulham goalkeeper had been on loan with the Hammers this season but they’ve now activated a purchase option to sign the player outright. Despite being second choice to Lukasz Fabianski this campaign, Areola was seen regularly in cup competitions for West Ham, including a run to the Europa League semi-finals.

Newcastle United also expressed an interest in the player in recent days but West Ham will be the 29-year-old’s destination as he looks to secure a place in Didier Deschamps’ France national team World Cup squad for this November. He so far has three caps to his name.

L’Équipe report that the deal will bring PSG between €9m and €12m as they look to make more major player sales this summer.
