Lionel Messi ambiguous over his future

After scoring in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela last night, Lionel Messi was interviewed about his future, indicating that he would reflect after the World Cup.

Speaking to TyC Sports, the Paris Saint-Germain man insisted that he did not know what the future had in store, but that he was focused on Argentina’s upcoming matches before the tournament in Qatar.

“I don’t know [what the future holds internationally], I really don’t. I’m thinking of what’s coming up, what’s close, which is the game against Ecuador and the friendlies in June and September.”

“After the World Cup, I’m going to have to reevaluate a lot of things, whether it goes well or badly. Let’s hope it’s in the best of ways. But a lot of things will definitely change after the World Cup.”

Kylian Mbappé’s lawyer on sponsor boycott: “He is an athlete from the new generation.”

In an interview published in today’s L’Équipe, Kylian Mbappé’s lawyer Delphine Verheyden explains the reasoning behind the forward’s boycott of his sponsorship commitments with the French national team.

The 23-year-old had been absent from his marketing obligations with Les Bleus’ sponsors last Tuesday, reportedly as he did not want to associate his image with certain brands, but also over the nature and length of the image rights agreement signed by French players.

“When a player is called up to the French national team for the first time, one of the first things they do is sign a document handed to them which will govern their rights and obligations with the team. The document is valid from when it’s signed and expires five years after the end of their professional career. That’s the first things that poses a problem to us. For Kylian, that will essentially go from the age of 18 to 40 years old. Committing to that kind of length is not realistic. The convention was written up in 2010 and the world of 2022 has nothing to do with that of the post-Knysna times [French team going on strike at South Africa World Cup]. For us, it’s mathematic and philosophical.”

“[…] As well as the lack of benefits there can be for players, there’s more importantly a massive risk that their image could be warped. A player’s image is a reputation associated with values. These values are notably expressed in the adverts that players accept to do. It’s important that players are in harmony with the advertising in which they take part. For their young audience, they act as role models. This should be handled with care.”

“Otherwise the messages that a player wants to get across become inaudible, even completely contradictory. And the new generation is no longer ready to compromise with their principles and ideals. Kylian is an athlete from the new generation. After the [2018] World Cup, Kylian tried, despite the high number of offers he received, to make his own choices. Rather than [promoting] food which could lead to obesity, he made the choice to go for “Good Goût”, an organic food brand for children. That doesn’t mean that he himself is beyond reproach in what he consumes, but rather that he wants to take the right message to the youngest audience who are influenced by their idols.”

“[We want to] review the convention without delay, before the next phot shoot in September for the World Cup. It’s not possible for the FFF to work like this anymore and with this initial agreement without speaking to the players at the start of every season. Given the current climate, what would have happened if a Russian company had been an FFF sponsor? The players, as things are, would not have had any way of turning down promoting this brand. They need to have the possibility of have a clause of conscience.”

“We have to distinguish from, on the one hand, the official full team photo which can be used freely. That poses no issue as it’s indeed the French national team being represented. On the other hand, we need to rework the idea of a collective image when it only concerns five players. For these kinds of uses, players should have a right of inspection. And it’s not always the same ones that should be picked, as it’s too often the case for Kylian right now.”

“[On official shirt sales] Who has the rights? The kit supplier, the FFF and the players. If the player’s name goes on the shirt, he should earn something. Everyone is then free to decide if they want to keep the money or have it go to grassroots football’s benefit. That’s how Kylian wants to intervene in what he generates.”

In this new weekly feature, GFFN Chief Features Writer Eric Devin and veteran GFFN contributor Jeremy Smith face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?

Scores after week three:JEREMY: 10ERIC: 12

Game of the Week: Nice v Rennes – Saturday 4pm

Jeremy: There’s no doubt about the big Ligue 1 match this weekend. On Saturday afternoon fourth place Nice take on third place Rennes. Les Aiglons will want to bounce back after their slightly unlucky 2-1 defeat at Marseille, which saw them knocked off the podium by flying Rennes, who destroyed Metz 6-1. Nice have won four of their last five at home – including a defeat of PSG – so will be pleased to return to home comforts. They should take confidence from having beaten Rennes in the return fixture too. But Rennes are unbeaten in Ligue 1 since early February and have scored 20 goals in their last five league games – as Christophe Galtier himself has said, Rennes are currently the best team in the division. This should be a high-quality match as Ligue 1’s best defence tries to keep out its best attack.

Eric: Nice have been solid defensively this season, but Rennes have been equally adept going forward, and one has to look at Les Aiglons too often having poor results at home throughout the season to predict this encounter. There should be goals in this match either way, but given the onus is on Nice, with Rennes two points ahead with nine matches to play, their desire to get on the front foot could be their undoing.

Florian Maurice says Faitout Maouassa asked him to scout a player he’d found on Football Manager

In speaking with So Foot, former Lyon, and now Rennes, sporting director Florian Maurice discussed his philosophy in scouting players after a raft of astute signings helped propel Rennes into the Champions League spots in Ligue 1 this season.

What is your thinking when scouting players? Do you have criteria that are more important than others?“I’m immediately drawn to technique. When I watch a player, I like to observe his pace, what he gives off. I like graceful players and, as a former striker, I’m attracted to attacking players. I made a mistake by basing my ideas solely on those areas at the start, forgetting the physical aspect. The French championship is special, harder than you think. I made the mistake of looking for players in much less athletic leagues, but that was a learning experience.”

Your transfer windows are often compared to the game ‘Football Manager’. Have you ever player it?“I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know what it is! Honestly, I don’t know at all. Faitout Maouassa [former Rennes left-back] came to talk to me about it one day to tell me that he’d spotted a great player in the game. (Laughs) He told me a little about the principles of the game, but I’ve never touched it. It seems that clubs use it, I imagine that it could be a source of information.”

Bruno Cheyrou, Lyon’s head of recruitment, thinks you have to have been a professional to know the value of a player. Do you agree?“For me, that’s wrong. I’ll give you a good example: Gérard Bonneau [Lyon’s former head of youth recruitment] was not a pro and he’s undoubtedly one of the best youth recruiters I have seen. In the recruitment unit at Rennes, there’s no former pro players. It means nothing. Gérard, who is at Dijon now, is a beast, he is a monster in this area. He played in non-league football but he has an eye.”

Ligue 1 authorities reveal plan to more than double income

As reported by L’Équipe, after partnering with the CVC investment fund, Ligue 1’s governing body, the LFP, hope to multiply their income by more than two times in the coming years.

CVC’s investment is expected to inject €1.5bn into the league in exchange for a 13% share from the league’s new commercial enterprise as the LFP plan their growth over the next decade.

In that time, the LFP is aiming, according to documents seen by the sports daily, to multiply their income by 2.3 by maximising national and international TV rights, sponsor partnerships and digital opportunities in the near future. Projections expect revenue to increase from €774m to €1.8bn.

Firstly, the league hopes to generate €860m from the next round of domestic TV deals, scheduled to start in 2024 while increasing overseas broadcast proceeds from €80m to €200m and then on to €350m by the 2027/28 campaign.

League authorities consider their product to be undervalued as it stands and are looking to the end of their current agreement with beIN Sports, who are responsible for marketing Ligue 1 abroad, in 2024. For the following round of TV rights deals (2028-2032) the LFP are aiming for €1.1bn per season in rights domestically and for €500m in overseas deals by 2030.

These last figures are, somewhat embarrassingly, comparable to the €1.15bn-a-year domestic deal with Spanish broadcaster Mediapro, and others, that collapsed in 2020.

Troyes manager Bruno Irles on defeat to Monaco: “We had double their expected goals.”

Speaking in the wake of his Troyes side’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco yesterday, manager Bruno Irles nevertheless sought to look at the positives and praised his players for going toe to toe with the opposition.

His words transcribed in L’Équipe, he notably pointed to his team’s Expected goals score as a reflection of their good performance, despite being limited to a handful of opportunities. It was Ike Ugbo’s goal before half-time that levelled the game up, before Kevin Volland’s winner on the hour mark.

“We were able to rival with Monaco. Nowadays, we have a new tool, Expected Goals, and we had more than our opponent, double even. We had chances, but we didn’t manage to get that equaliser. We had a few players who were below their level. They were on 85%, and for us that’s not enough. What we did was good. But well is not good enough, we need to do better.”

Maxence Caqueret mulling Lyon renewal after Milan offer

RMC Sport report this morning that Maxence Caqueret has received an offer from Milan, leading him to consider his options, with a renewal offer on the table with Lyon.

The midfielder, who is set to return from injury, sees his current deal expire at the end of next season. After initially unsuccessful talks in autumn, he has now received an offer from Les Gones that would quadruple his salary and assurances that he would become captain in the future.

Nevertheless, Caqueret is still reflecting on his future, with Milan approaching the 22-year-old with an offer to join next season. The likelihood remains that he will stay with his formative club, though.

The fact that the Rossoneri will be playing in the Champions League next season is a factor in his decision making, while Lyon’s European hopes are dwindling with each passing week.

Caqueret would be joining a growing cohort of French players under Stefano Pioli’s management, with Olivier Giroud, Pierre Kalulu, Théo Hernandez and Mike Maignan already at the club.

Julien Stéphan on Strasbourg’s European chances: “I don’t want to set any limits.”

Speaking in his post-match press conference after his Strasbourg side’s 2-1 win over Rennes, Julien Stéphan hailed the team’s incredible run which has given them a chance at qualifying for the Champions League next season.

His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the manager has nevertheless insisted that he is not focusing on the league table for the time being. Strasbourg find themselves in 4th place now with 5 games remaining, level on points with last night’s opponents in 3rd.

“The last half-hour was impressive. We were dangerous with every attack. Our play on the wings was excellent. The weight of Diallo and Ajorque on the opposition defence played a big part. My players had an incredible and very accomplished game.”

“I don’t want to set them any limits. We just want to play football, we’re not thinking about the league table. We have to savour these moments. We won’t be the favourites at Lille, who are the champions, nor against PSG. But we’re going to approach these games with solidity, calm, and ambition. It’s going to be fascinating.”

Real Madrid and PSG interested in Riyad Mahrez

L’Équipe report that Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez could be on the move this summer, with notably Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain interested.

The Algerian international, who is under contract until 2023, is seen by PSG as a potential replacement for Ángel Di María, who is set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old could be set to make his return to French football, having left Le Havre for Leicester back in 2014. In any case, his contract situation has seen several big clubs keep tabs on him ahead of a potentially busy summer,
