BEIJING, CHINA — A man detonated an explosive device outside the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, according to reports. A spokesoman for the embassy told media outlets the blast happened around 1 p.m. local time. The 26-year-old reportedly hurt himself and was taken to a hospital by authorities.
The blast could be heard several blocks away CNN reported.
“There was one individual who detonated a bomb. Other than the bomber, there were no injuries and there was no damage to embassy property. The local police responded,” an embassy spokesperson said in a statement.
The device was a “firecracker-like explosive” The Guardian reported, describing it also as a small, low-grade bomb.
An IT worker in the area told CNN “There was a lot of smoke and it smelled a lot like fireworks and matches.”
Police in China reportedly identified the suspect by his surname Jiang. Police said he was from the city of Tongliao and had injured his hand. His injuries are not life-threatening
The reason behind the explosion wasn’t immediately clear.
