Man Wearing TV Set On Head Leaves Old TVs On VA Doorsteps

HENRICO COUNTY, VA — Perhaps it was a misguided act of generosity, a man authorities call the “TV Santa Claus” anonymously left old-school television sets on doorsteps at more than 50 Henrico County, Virginia, homes. Authorities and residents are scratching their heads over the message behind the action — is it a gift, a prank by kids, a warning that Big Brother is watching, or a moral message not to let the “boob tube” suck up your time and attention?

Aside from the muddled meaning, the TV Santa struck Aug. 11 in the Hampshire area before dawn, but was captured on several residents’ doorbell cameras. Uniformly the stranger — dressed either with a TV shaped mask or an empty set turned into a helmet — placed heavy tube-style TVs on the steps or front porches of homes with the screen facing the front door. A similar stunt occurred last year in the county.

So Sunday morning police and county crews were out picking up the old TV sets as homeowners wondered what it all meant. (Watch the video below.)

“People are weird,” one resident told WTVR.

“They had way too much time on their hands. …I think it’s just a prank, some college students who are bored,” homeowner Michael Kroll told the TV station.

Police said the only possible criminal charge in the wave of old TV sets left at Henrico homes is illegal dumping.

Lt. Matt Pecka with Henrico Police said more than one person wearing a mask resembling a television dropped off the TVs.

Last August another Henrico neighborhood received a similar offering of about 20 outmoded TVs. The person responsible in that case is still unknown.
