Corrosion protection of Mg alloys: Review on synergistic effects of combining inhibitors with PEO coating

Magnesium (Mg) alloys are lightweight materials with excellent mechanical properties, making them attractive for various applications, including aerospace, automotive, and biomedical industries. However, the practical application of Mg alloys is limited due to their high susceptibility to corrosion.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), or micro-arc oxidation (MAO), is a coating method that boosts Mg alloys’ corrosion resistance. However, despite the benefits of PEO coatings, they can still exhibit certain limitations, such as failing to maintain long-term protection as a result of their inherent porosity. To address these challenges, researchers have suggested the use of inhibitors in combination with PEO coatings on Mg alloys.

Inhibitors are chemical compounds that can be incorporated into the coating or applied as a post-treatment to further boost the corrosion resistance of the PEO-coated Mg alloys. Corrosion inhibitors, whether organic or inorganic, can act by forming a protective barrier, hindering the corrosion process, or modifying the surface properties to reduce susceptibility to corrosion. Containers can be made of various materials, including polyelectrolyte shells, layered double hydroxides, polymer shells, and mesoporous inorganic materials.

Encapsulating corrosion inhibitors in containers fully compatible with the coating matrix and substrate is a promising approach for their incorporation. Laboratory studies of the combination of inhibitors with PEO coatings on Mg alloys have shown promising results, demonstrating significant corrosion mitigation, extending the service life of Mg alloy components in aggressive environments, and providing self-healing properties. In general, this review presents available information on the incorporation of inhibitors with PEO coatings, which can lead to improved performance of Mg alloy components in demanding environments.

Reading tip: Corrosion protection coatings

The book “Anticorrosive Coatings: Fundamentals and New Concepts” brings together all the disciplines involved in the creation and use of corrosion protection coatings for metals. It presents the latest insights into the quality and chemistry of surfaces, the proper way to prepare them by conversion treatment, the function of resins and anticorrosion pigments in paints, and novel concepts in corrosion protection. As an added bonus, all the standards and directives mentioned in the text are grouped together in their own chapter for a better overview.

Correlation between curing behavior and properties

Researchers have investigated the correlation between the curing behavior and the properties of acrylic powder coatings.

Acrylic powder coatings are environmentally friendly, solvent-free solid coatings with excellent durability and corrosion resistance that protect substrates from corrosive environments. The curing behavior of acrylic powder coatings affects the coating film properties. In a new study, a catalyst was used to control the curing conversion rate, and the curing characteristics and physical properties were compared for coatings with and without the catalyst. Differential scanning calorimetry and an isoconversional method were used to obtain activation energies, and the conversion rate under different isothermal conditions was computed.

Enhanced physical properties

Notably, complete curing could not be achieved without the catalyst; however, the catalyst-containing coating was entirely cured. With sufficient curing established, the addition of the catalyst was found to increase the adhesion, impact resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, the recoatability was reduced owing to a lack of unreacted monomers on the surface of the catalyst-containing coating film, as verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In general, the addition of a catalyst to acrylic powder coatings enabled complete curing and enhanced most physical properties, offering an improved formulation for applications across high-corrosion environments.

The study has been published in Journal of Coatings Technology and Research, Volume 20, Issue 3, May 2023.

British Coatings Federation CEO honoured with leadership award

British Coatings Federation’s Chief Executive, Tom Bowtell, has been awarded with the Public Sector/Charity/Trade Association Leadership Award.

The award, sponsored by PZ Cussons, celebrates notable leadership and significant contributions to the science sector. Steve Bennett, who organised the Business of Science Conference on which BCF CEO Bowtell was honoured, commented: “The Business of Science Leadership Awards are given to highlight significant Leadership across Science, Innovation and Business. In the Public Sector/Charity/Trade Association sector, the judges were delighted to recognise Tom Bowtell’s work over the last 18 months in not only leading the British Coatings Federation to support its members during the pandemic and the onset of Brexit, but in his industry-wide leadership across the UK Coatings and Chemical Industries, most notably battling the wider implications of UK REACH. Tom’s work in ensuring that the potential costs and significant challenges to industry supply chains were communicated, recognised and considered has been exemplary, and as a result, the judges felt unanimously that Tom would be a very worthy recipient of this Award.”

“Challenging times with Brexit and Covid”

Tom Bowtell added “I’m honoured to receive this award on behalf of the BCF. Our team has done a great job supporting our members through challenging times with Brexit and Covid and we have successfully punched above our weight as the industry’s public voice to Government, NGOs and academia. Now we look forward to trying to create proportionate chemical regulations that stimulate manufacturing and innovation in the UK, and to drive the sustainability agenda for the sector, with a Net Zero pledge by 2050, and a more immediate goal to see 75% of leftover decorative paint reused, recycled, or remanufactured by 2030, compared to a derisory 2% today.”

British Coatings Federation Annual Conference: Industry leaders address challenges and opportunities

The British Coatings Federation (BCF) held it’s Annual Conference 2024 on 23 May in Manchester. Current president Sharon Harte welcomed more than 160 delegates from the British coatings industry – the highest attendance ever. By Damir Gagro

Even though it still cannot be said the British Coatings industry is back on track, as demand remains soft, there are some positive developments. According to BCF managing director Tom Bowtell the inflation seems to be under control and an easing of raw material prices is recognisable. Consumer prices have also become steadier and the consumer confidence index – although being low – is turning into a positive development. Bowtell showed how important the trade relation with Europe is. Therefore, it is key to facilitate the trade with European countries.

Elections in Great Britain will be held in July, but BCF’s David Park does not expect a huge shift in politics no matter what party wins. Nevertheless, he stressed that after the elections, there will be more than 140 new members of parliament (MP). These new MPs need to be educated about the needs of the coatings industry.

Economist Andrea Boltho from Oxford Economics provided a broader economic perspective. He noted that while the economy is growing modestly and inflation is decreasing, high wages and costs continue to burden the economy. Boltho highlighted that the US market performed better than expected, in contrast to Germany, which faces significant struggles. Despite modest and uncertain recovery in the UK and Europe, technological advancements such as robotics, biotechnology, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence (AI) offer potential growth opportunities.

AI and digitization in manufacturing

The conference also focused on AI and digitization, with Sherin Mathews from AI Tech UK asserting that AI is a game-changer for the manufacturing sector. He noted that companies currently use only a fraction of their data’s potential. Fhaheen Khan from Make UK stressed the importance of accelerating digital adoption and automation to enhance productivity. He highlighted the severe labor shortages in the sector, with over 60,000 vacancies in the UK alone, and the need for manufacturers to share information on automation benefits.

Talent acquisition and leadership development

A panel discussion titled “Finding Future Leaders for the Coatings Sector” addressed the crucial issue of attracting and retaining talent. Panellists Molly Kershaw (PPG Industries), Andrew Roser (Akzo Nobel), Helen Anderton (INX International), and Tim Dogget (Chemical Business Association) shared insights on recruiting young talents. The discussion, moderated by Steve Bennet, engaged the audience into a vivid discussion. Using the Slido polling tool, the audience overwhelmingly prioritized attitude over skill, education, or prior experience in young recruits.

Collaboration and strategic vision

CEPE Chairman Roald Johannsen presented the vision, mission and purpose of the European umbrella association. He emphasised that an association is the strong voice to represent the needs of the industry in the context of an ever-changing environment. Constant change has reached an unprecedented pace and intensity. In order to continue to promote the importance of the industry, it is essential to work more closely together at European level. With the European Parliament elections in the next few weeks, he noted that we are at a crossroads. With the EU Green Deal on the one hand, the coatings sector requires an industrial deal. These two deals need to be balanced to achieve the twin goals of a sustainable environment and a thriving sustainable industry.

The BCF Silver Medal awarded to ACA’s Andy J. Doyle

During the gala dinner, Andy J. Doyle of the American Coatings Association was awarded with the BCF Silver Medal. The BCF Silver Medal was instigated by Leslie Silver OBE, founder of Silver Paint and Lacquer, upon his retirement in 1980. The Silver Medal recognises those who provide outstanding service and an exceptional contribution to the paints, coatings, printing ink and wallcovering industries’ growth and reputation.

The BCF Annual Conference 2024 provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss the current challenges and future opportunities within the British coatings industry. With a focus on economic outlook, strategic collaboration, technological advancements, and talent development, the conference highlighted the path forward for the industry amidst a landscape of uncertainty and change.
