Florian Maurice says Faitout Maouassa asked him to scout a player he’d found on Football Manager

In speaking with So Foot, former Lyon, and now Rennes, sporting director Florian Maurice discussed his philosophy in scouting players after a raft of astute signings helped propel Rennes into the Champions League spots in Ligue 1 this season.

What is your thinking when scouting players? Do you have criteria that are more important than others?“I’m immediately drawn to technique. When I watch a player, I like to observe his pace, what he gives off. I like graceful players and, as a former striker, I’m attracted to attacking players. I made a mistake by basing my ideas solely on those areas at the start, forgetting the physical aspect. The French championship is special, harder than you think. I made the mistake of looking for players in much less athletic leagues, but that was a learning experience.”

Your transfer windows are often compared to the game ‘Football Manager’. Have you ever player it?“I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know what it is! Honestly, I don’t know at all. Faitout Maouassa [former Rennes left-back] came to talk to me about it one day to tell me that he’d spotted a great player in the game. (Laughs) He told me a little about the principles of the game, but I’ve never touched it. It seems that clubs use it, I imagine that it could be a source of information.”

Bruno Cheyrou, Lyon’s head of recruitment, thinks you have to have been a professional to know the value of a player. Do you agree?“For me, that’s wrong. I’ll give you a good example: Gérard Bonneau [Lyon’s former head of youth recruitment] was not a pro and he’s undoubtedly one of the best youth recruiters I have seen. In the recruitment unit at Rennes, there’s no former pro players. It means nothing. Gérard, who is at Dijon now, is a beast, he is a monster in this area. He played in non-league football but he has an eye.”

Ligue 1 authorities reveal plan to more than double income

As reported by L’Équipe, after partnering with the CVC investment fund, Ligue 1’s governing body, the LFP, hope to multiply their income by more than two times in the coming years.

CVC’s investment is expected to inject €1.5bn into the league in exchange for a 13% share from the league’s new commercial enterprise as the LFP plan their growth over the next decade.

In that time, the LFP is aiming, according to documents seen by the sports daily, to multiply their income by 2.3 by maximising national and international TV rights, sponsor partnerships and digital opportunities in the near future. Projections expect revenue to increase from €774m to €1.8bn.

Firstly, the league hopes to generate €860m from the next round of domestic TV deals, scheduled to start in 2024 while increasing overseas broadcast proceeds from €80m to €200m and then on to €350m by the 2027/28 campaign.

League authorities consider their product to be undervalued as it stands and are looking to the end of their current agreement with beIN Sports, who are responsible for marketing Ligue 1 abroad, in 2024. For the following round of TV rights deals (2028-2032) the LFP are aiming for €1.1bn per season in rights domestically and for €500m in overseas deals by 2030.

These last figures are, somewhat embarrassingly, comparable to the €1.15bn-a-year domestic deal with Spanish broadcaster Mediapro, and others, that collapsed in 2020.

Troyes manager Bruno Irles on defeat to Monaco: “We had double their expected goals.”

Speaking in the wake of his Troyes side’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco yesterday, manager Bruno Irles nevertheless sought to look at the positives and praised his players for going toe to toe with the opposition.

His words transcribed in L’Équipe, he notably pointed to his team’s Expected goals score as a reflection of their good performance, despite being limited to a handful of opportunities. It was Ike Ugbo’s goal before half-time that levelled the game up, before Kevin Volland’s winner on the hour mark.

“We were able to rival with Monaco. Nowadays, we have a new tool, Expected Goals, and we had more than our opponent, double even. We had chances, but we didn’t manage to get that equaliser. We had a few players who were below their level. They were on 85%, and for us that’s not enough. What we did was good. But well is not good enough, we need to do better.”

Nevertheless, Caqueret is still reflecting on his future, with Milan approaching the 22-year-old with an offer to join next season. The likelihood remains that he will stay with his formative club, though.

The fact that the Rossoneri will be playing in the Champions League next season is a factor in his decision making, while Lyon’s European hopes are dwindling with each passing week.

Caqueret would be joining a growing cohort of French players under Stefano Pioli’s management, with Olivier Giroud, Pierre Kalulu, Théo Hernandez and Mike Maignan already at the club.

Julien Stéphan on Strasbourg’s European chances: “I don’t want to set any limits.”

Speaking in his post-match press conference after his Strasbourg side’s 2-1 win over Rennes, Julien Stéphan hailed the team’s incredible run which has given them a chance at qualifying for the Champions League next season.

His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the manager has nevertheless insisted that he is not focusing on the league table for the time being. Strasbourg find themselves in 4th place now with 5 games remaining, level on points with last night’s opponents in 3rd.

“The last half-hour was impressive. We were dangerous with every attack. Our play on the wings was excellent. The weight of Diallo and Ajorque on the opposition defence played a big part. My players had an incredible and very accomplished game.”

“I don’t want to set them any limits. We just want to play football, we’re not thinking about the league table. We have to savour these moments. We won’t be the favourites at Lille, who are the champions, nor against PSG. But we’re going to approach these games with solidity, calm, and ambition. It’s going to be fascinating.”
