Swiss prosecutor calls for 28-month prison sentence for PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi

Various outlets including L’Équipe report tonight that a Swiss prosecutor has called for a 28-month prison sentence for PSG and beIN president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as part of “FIFAgate”.

The trial revolves around allegations of corruption in the awarding of FIFA broadcasting rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. The Bellinzona court has also called for a 35-month sentence for former FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke.

The two men had been acquitted during an initial trial in 2020 by the Federal Penal Tribunal, with today’s hearing constituting an appeal by the Public Ministry of the Confederation. Al-Khelaifi is accused of “instigation of aggravated dishonest management”.

In that first trial, both had seen the Swiss court call for sentences of the same length as today’s request – although they were partly suspended sentences. RMC Sport report that this Tuesday’s request does not include any suspended sentence.

A final judgement has been placed under deliberation and is expected in several weeks.

PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi reported to have threatened Champions League referees

According to Spanish publication Marca, the President of Paris Saint-Germain, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, threatened Dutch referee Danny Makkiele, having sought him out in his changing room after PSG’s collapse against Real Madrid. The cause of his anger is said to have been the ‘foul’ committed by Karim Benzema on Gianluigi Donnarumma which led to the Frenchman’s first goal of the night.

A Real Madrid employee is said to have filmed the incident in which Nasser Al-Khelaïfi is reported to have said, “I will kill you.” Marca also state that UEFA are currently reviewing the footage in order to decide on a proportionate punishment.

A referee’s report cited by Spanish radio station Onda Cero states the following: “The president and the technical director behaved aggressively and tried to enter the referees’ changing room. When the referee asked them to leave, they blocked the door and the president deliberately and deliberately hit one of the assistant’s flags.”

According to Movistar, another Spanish source, the police were called in to calm the pair down. According to Cadena COPE, a second Spanish radio station, Sporting Director Leonardo has asked that the footage be deleted.

PSG dressing room is starting to fracture after Real Madrid loss

As reported by L’Équipe, the already fragile harmony at PSG is under threat following the dramatic loss to Real Madrid and subsequent exit from the Champions League last week.

After rumours of a bust up between Neymar and Gianluigi Donnarumma in the aftermath were denied by all concerned, the sports daily report utter silence in the PSG dressing room at the Bernabéu and on the plane back to Paris, as players stared into space. It took nearly an hour for some to get up and shower having returned to the dressing room.

PSG captain Marquinhos’ lack of leadership has not gone unnoticed by the Paris squad say the paper. Some have complained to those around them that the team lacked a leader capable to stabilising the game at 1-1 or 2-1. The Captain’s lack of calmness during the game has worried his teammates, with some thinking he may not be up to the task of leading the squad despite his popularity.

Lionel Messi’s failure to deliver, after he was given extra holiday this winter, and Neymar’s swift return to posting whimsically on Instagram over his sister’s birthday after the defeat has irked some in the squad who have been concerned by the “7+3” style of play under Pochettino. One club source told L’Équipe last week: “I don’t remember ever having experienced such a heavy atmosphere at the training ground as I have over the last two days.”

Pochettino was reportedly seemingly on the verge of tears at his presser before the Bordeaux game this weekend, throughout which Messi and Neymar were whistled repeatedly. The former Tottenham coach has never seemed so downtrodden and defeated.

Mauricio Pochettino could leave PSG this summer

Julien Maynard of Téléfoot reports this morning that Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino could be set to leave the club this summer in the wake of the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Argentine’s contract expires at the end of next season, and has emerged as an “ideal” culprit on which to pin the blame for the debacle against the La Liga side.

The former Tottenham Hotspur coach was already looking to leave the club last year, and is privately not hiding his desire to return to England.

PSG will not extend Ángel Di María’s contract

RMC Sport report this afternoon that Paris Saint-Germain will not exercise the option to extend Ángel Di María’s contract by an extra year, as his current contract allows for.

A definitive decision on the additional season, which would have to be agreed upon by both parties, has not been made yet, although the Argentine is expected to leave at the end of the campaign.

The former Real Madrid man will leave Ligue 1 after seven seasons in which he won four league titles – pending a probably fifth at the end of the season – and the Coupe de France five times.

To replace him, PSG have initiated discussions with the entourage of Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé in the last few weeks, who is also free this summer. Nevertheless, several English sides are also in for the French World Cup winner.

Sergio Ramos wants to stay at PSG next season

L’Équipe report today that despite going through a first season at Paris Saint-Germain marred by injury, Sergio Ramos is intent on honouring his two-year contract at the club.

The 35-year-old has suffered an ongoing calf problem since his arrival, which has limited him to just five appearances and seen his free transfer from Real Madrid called into question.

Ramos will undergo a final assessment today with regard to his availability for tomorrow’s match against Monaco – if he has still not recovered, the Spaniard will return after the international break against Lorient.

The defender himself is aware that his move has not gone to plan, but has no intention of walking away and intends to stay for the duration of his contract.

On signing, the former Real Madrid captain was told he would not be a guaranteed starter, but that he was bringing in his leadership, hence why he travelled with the squad for the Champions League clash last week. Nevertheless, the PSG management’s position is still unclear when it comes to Ramos’ future.

Saint-Étienne interested in Matheus Indio of Trofense

Ligue 1 club Saint-Étienne’s scouting net has been cast far and wide ahead of the summer transfer window with their prospects of survival in Ligue 1 looking up. As reported by BUT, their talent search has led to the Portuguese second division.

Les Verts are interested in signing 22-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder Matheus Indio who plays for Trofense in Portugal’s second tier. Nice and Nantes are also looking at signing the player whose contract runs to 2024. Trofense are currently struggling in their division and lie 14th of 18 sides.

Lionel Messi ambiguous over his future

After scoring in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela last night, Lionel Messi was interviewed about his future, indicating that he would reflect after the World Cup.

Speaking to TyC Sports, the Paris Saint-Germain man insisted that he did not know what the future had in store, but that he was focused on Argentina’s upcoming matches before the tournament in Qatar.

“I don’t know [what the future holds internationally], I really don’t. I’m thinking of what’s coming up, what’s close, which is the game against Ecuador and the friendlies in June and September.”

“After the World Cup, I’m going to have to reevaluate a lot of things, whether it goes well or badly. Let’s hope it’s in the best of ways. But a lot of things will definitely change after the World Cup.”

Kylian Mbappé’s lawyer on sponsor boycott: “He is an athlete from the new generation.”

In an interview published in today’s L’Équipe, Kylian Mbappé’s lawyer Delphine Verheyden explains the reasoning behind the forward’s boycott of his sponsorship commitments with the French national team.

The 23-year-old had been absent from his marketing obligations with Les Bleus’ sponsors last Tuesday, reportedly as he did not want to associate his image with certain brands, but also over the nature and length of the image rights agreement signed by French players.

“When a player is called up to the French national team for the first time, one of the first things they do is sign a document handed to them which will govern their rights and obligations with the team. The document is valid from when it’s signed and expires five years after the end of their professional career. That’s the first things that poses a problem to us. For Kylian, that will essentially go from the age of 18 to 40 years old. Committing to that kind of length is not realistic. The convention was written up in 2010 and the world of 2022 has nothing to do with that of the post-Knysna times [French team going on strike at South Africa World Cup]. For us, it’s mathematic and philosophical.”

“[…] As well as the lack of benefits there can be for players, there’s more importantly a massive risk that their image could be warped. A player’s image is a reputation associated with values. These values are notably expressed in the adverts that players accept to do. It’s important that players are in harmony with the advertising in which they take part. For their young audience, they act as role models. This should be handled with care.”

“Otherwise the messages that a player wants to get across become inaudible, even completely contradictory. And the new generation is no longer ready to compromise with their principles and ideals. Kylian is an athlete from the new generation. After the [2018] World Cup, Kylian tried, despite the high number of offers he received, to make his own choices. Rather than [promoting] food which could lead to obesity, he made the choice to go for “Good Goût”, an organic food brand for children. That doesn’t mean that he himself is beyond reproach in what he consumes, but rather that he wants to take the right message to the youngest audience who are influenced by their idols.”

“[We want to] review the convention without delay, before the next phot shoot in September for the World Cup. It’s not possible for the FFF to work like this anymore and with this initial agreement without speaking to the players at the start of every season. Given the current climate, what would have happened if a Russian company had been an FFF sponsor? The players, as things are, would not have had any way of turning down promoting this brand. They need to have the possibility of have a clause of conscience.”

“We have to distinguish from, on the one hand, the official full team photo which can be used freely. That poses no issue as it’s indeed the French national team being represented. On the other hand, we need to rework the idea of a collective image when it only concerns five players. For these kinds of uses, players should have a right of inspection. And it’s not always the same ones that should be picked, as it’s too often the case for Kylian right now.”

“[On official shirt sales] Who has the rights? The kit supplier, the FFF and the players. If the player’s name goes on the shirt, he should earn something. Everyone is then free to decide if they want to keep the money or have it go to grassroots football’s benefit. That’s how Kylian wants to intervene in what he generates.”

Game of the Week: Nice v Rennes – Saturday 4pm

Jeremy: There’s no doubt about the big Ligue 1 match this weekend. On Saturday afternoon fourth place Nice take on third place Rennes. Les Aiglons will want to bounce back after their slightly unlucky 2-1 defeat at Marseille, which saw them knocked off the podium by flying Rennes, who destroyed Metz 6-1. Nice have won four of their last five at home – including a defeat of PSG – so will be pleased to return to home comforts. They should take confidence from having beaten Rennes in the return fixture too. But Rennes are unbeaten in Ligue 1 since early February and have scored 20 goals in their last five league games – as Christophe Galtier himself has said, Rennes are currently the best team in the division. This should be a high-quality match as Ligue 1’s best defence tries to keep out its best attack.

Eric: Nice have been solid defensively this season, but Rennes have been equally adept going forward, and one has to look at Les Aiglons too often having poor results at home throughout the season to predict this encounter. There should be goals in this match either way, but given the onus is on Nice, with Rennes two points ahead with nine matches to play, their desire to get on the front foot could be their undoing.
