'Project Adama' – Bayern & Canada star Davies reveals gym workout after return to training

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has vowed to bulk up after his return to training.

The full-back has not featured since December since he was diagnosed with a heart condition following a bout of Covid-19.

Davies has been left out of the Canada squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches but is continuing his work towards a return to the field by hitting the gym.

What has been said?

The 21-year-old posted a video on his Instagram story of him inside the gym.

He then shouts: “Time to get swole. Project Adama.”

The Canada star is likely referring to Adama Traore, who drastically increased his upper-body strength over the space of a few years.

When will Davies play again?

It remains unclear when exactly Davies will be back in the Bayern Munich squad, but Julian Nagelsmann said last week that he could be back in time to face Villarreal in the Champions League next month.

“We have had a good checkup [on Friday] as well but it’s just slowly getting back into it,” the coach told reporters.

“He probably will be back in about three to four weeks, at least that is still our goal.

“So he will be playing that Champions League game hopefully against Villarreal if everything works as usual.”

Ibrahimovic admits retirement 'panic' as he warns fans 'you’ll never see the likes of me again'

Afcon final ‘replay’ in Cairo

Egypt and Cameroon will clash in what would be a rematch of the 2021 Afcon final.

The first leg between the two sides will be played at Cairo International Stadium and comes almost two months after Senegal beat Egypt.

The Teranga Lions beat the Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time.

Egypt would want to take a healthy first-leg league as they seek to deny Senegal a spot in Qatar.

West African old foes renew rivalry

Ghana will be the first team to be at home at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi in this battle of traditional rivals.

The Black Stars were in the same group as Bafana Bafana from where they secured a play-off spot.

They now have Nigeria to deal with in this potentially stormy affair and they will be tested to the fullest.

Nigeria were at the last World Cup edition in Russia while Ghana missed that tournament and would be seeking a healthy lead ahead of visiting the Super Eagles in Abuja.

Cameroon legend Rigobert Song begins his tenure as Cameroon coach and what a stage to kick off his reign – against Algeria.

It will be a monumental test of Song facing Algeria as he seeks to soothe the spirits of Cameroonians who endured the agony of watching their team failing to win Afcon on home soil.

The burden to tone for the disappointment lies on Song and his men who start at home at Japoma Stadium before travelling to Algeria.

They face the Desert Foxes looking for redemption after finishing bottom of Group E at Afcon.

Leopards out to end 38-year wait

DR Congo have not been at the World Cup since 1974 which was their only participation at the quadrennial global football competition.

They now face Morocco in their bid to break that long wait and they start at home at Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecote.

They come up against a Morocco side that was in Russia the last time out and reached the 2021 Afcon quarter-finals where they were knocked out by Egypt.

Confrontation of the Eagles Getty

This will be the battle between the Malian Eagles and the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

They begin their confrontation at Venue Stade 26 Mars in Bamako, before switching battleground to Rades.

Neymar 'one of the best to ever play the game' says NXGN star Elliott

Liverpool winger Harvey Elliott has praised Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar as one of the best players in football history.

The 18-year-old, who came in , says the Brazil star is one of his idols.

Elliott has been learning more about the 30-year-old since watching the documentary Neymar: The Perfect Chaos.

Click Here: What has been said?

Asked on the Youtube channel if Neymar was his idol, Elliott said: “That is very true, yeah. I’ve been watching his documentary recently and to see the background he has come from, and how he has got to where he has today is very inspirational.

“I personally think he’s a great player and one of the best to ever play the game.”

Elliott on Klopp’s bear hugs

As one of his side’s most promising young players, Elliott has regularly been embraced by coach Jurgen Klopp.

The winger was asked if the manager’s bear hugs hurt, to which he replied: “No, no! The warmth that he brings – it’s a joke.

“He is [a father figure]. You see it a lot, how he is with players, his players, his staff and how he interacts with the fans.

“He’s the best possible man for the job, I can say, and the best possible person to be learning off.”

Elliott missed almost four months of action this month after dislocating his ankle in September, which Klopp described as one of the worst injuries he has seen.

“That’s down to him, really,” Harvey said when asked about the German’s comments.

“I’m sure he’s seen horrible injuries and injuries in the past that have played on his mind. It’s not nice for anyone to be injured.

“I tried to give positivity to the team and especially to him. It’s nice to see how he feels, at the same time I don’t like people feeling that way towards me and feeling upset.

“It does give me a boost to show how he cares about me and how he thinks and feels about me.”

Ghana forgot to name Messi and Ronaldo against Nigeria – Olorundare ahead of World Cup qualifier

Former Nigeria striker Dele Olorundare says he felt Ghana would name Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in their World Cup qualification play-off squad to face the Super Eagles.

After several weeks of wait, interim coach Otto Addo named his 27-man squad for Augustine Eguavoen’s men on Tuesday morning with Arsenal’s Thomas Partey and Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew making the cut.

In a chat with GOAL, the former Sunshine Stars goal machine gave an assessment of the Black Stars squad, while slamming them for waiting so long before announcing their team.

“I have taken my time to go through the squad released by the Ghanaians, it is a good squad but not different from what I was expecting,” Olorundare told GOAL.

“To be honest with you, I keep asking myself why it took them so long to announce their squad. Due to their delays, I was expecting them to include Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in their list, but I guess they forgot.

“Well, whatever reasons they have is well known to them, but that will not stop them from losing to the Super Eagles in Kumasi and also in Abuja.”

Since their first meeting in this competition on August 28, 1960 – where Nigeria bowed 4-1 in Accra, both countries have played against one another on seven occasions, with the Super Eagles winning twice.

The Ghanaians have had the upper hand in two fixtures while the remaining four have ended in stalemates.

When asked where the pendulum would swing after two legs, the 31-year-old said: “Judging by past records, we are to be scared of the Black Stars, but on current form – because of the performance of our players in Europe – we have the advantage.

“Should Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo re-enact their club form, then there will be no hiding place for Ghana in Kumasi.

Article continues below

“One disadvantage they have is that they will be missing the services of Jordan Ayew because of the red card he got in Cameroon.

“Overall, I expect a tough encounter but I am very sure that the Super Eagles will qualify for Qatar 2022.”

The reverse fixture of the World Cup play-off will be at the M.KO. Abiola Stadium, Abuja with the winners on aggregate representing Africa at the global football showpiece.

What if Okocha had signed for Arsenal or Chelsea?

The advent of the Premier League in 1992/93 prompted a power change at the top of the table, as Manchester United, who hadn’t won the old First Division since 1966/67, were crowned champions of the league in its new format.

This heralded a period of dominance for the rest of the 90s, in which Sir Alex Ferguson’s troops came out on top in four of the next six years, thus winning five of the first seven titles following the English top flight’s revamp.

While Blackburn Rovers proved to be a flash in the pan with their 94/95 success under Kenny Dalglish, Arsene Wenger turned out to be a formidable adversary after his arrival in September 1996, and won the first of his three league titles with Arsenal in 97/98.

The Frenchman changed the culture at the North London club, which ultimately spread across the league, consequently silencing prior doubts about his competence.

Meanwhile, Chelsea, the Gunners’ London rivals were seemingly intent on breaking the duopoly that existed between the Red Devils and their city rivals.

The Blues’ rise began in the mid-to-late 90s, due to smart, relatively cheap purchases of experienced heads like Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola who possessed undeniable star power.

This process culminated in Roman Abramovich’s purchase of the club and subsequent Premier League success in the 2000s.

Prior to the West London club’s success, the previous era was dominated by three brilliant number 10’s, Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp and Zola, at United, Arsenal and Chelsea respectively to transform the English game.

But could Nigeria’s Jay-Jay Okocha have played a part in that revolution instead of the flamboyant Frenchman at the Red Devils, the exceptional Dutch at Highbury or the diminutive Italian at the Bridge?

In fairness, it’d be difficult making a case for the mercurial Okocha, despite his genius and ingenuity. However, given the enormous talent the West African possessed, some observers may suggest that it was a surprise he wasn’t sought after as English sides looked for their perfect playmaker in the mid-90s.

Indeed, the success of Cantona’s move to the red half of Manchester had prompted many Premier League sides to scout players of a similar profile in Europe and South America.

Hitherto the ex-Leeds United’s man arrival, English sides usually lined-up in a basic 4-4-2, with attacks largely channelled down both flanks and crosses sent in to two big strong strikers to fight it out with opposing centre-backs. It worked domestically, but they suffered in Europe at the time owing to their antiquated tactical knowledge.

Okocha, at the time of Cantona’s arrival at Old Trafford with the 92/93 campaign ongoing, was still a 19-year-old in his maiden season at Eintracht Frankfurt and perhaps wasn’t ready for that sort of responsibility.

However, three years later with the mercurial France star serving an eight-month ban from football for his assault on a Crystal Palace supporter, Sir Alex thought about signing Paul Gascoigne, one of the most talented English players of his generation, to replace the suspended attacker.

In reality, Gascoigne was not a pure number 10 but more dynamic than a typical playmaker, capable of running at a defence, setting up goals and scoring them.

As it turned out, the Englishman signed for Rangers in the summer of 1995, while the legendary Scot focused on convincing Cantona to stay…any potential Okocha move was dead in the water.

So, how about Arsenal and Chelsea?

Goal

The former’s move for the exceptional Bergkamp in August 1995 blocked the possibility of adding the Nigerian magician to the group at North London while Zola’s transfer to West London the following year shut the door at Stamford Bridge.

Of course, a transfer could still have happened in theory, however, it’d have been a waste of the African’s skillset to play him on the flanks or perhaps even in central midfield.

Players of Okocha’s profile were signed by Premier League managers at the time to give their side an advantage, and also find the ‘new Cantona’, given his feats at Man United.

Given most coaches at the time favoured a 4-4-2 with a flat backline, the playmaker imports to the English top flight were required to drop deeper and receive the ball between the lines (in the area behind the opponent’s midfield and in front of their defence) before wreaking havoc.

This made some managers switch from the aforementioned rudimentary tactic and formation to mostly adopt a 4-4-1-1, now accommodating a talented playmaker who was largely given carte blanche to do his thing.

However, Okocha wasn’t part of this era in England and joined Fenerbahce where he enjoyed two prolific campaigns, which foreshadowed an.

The Nigerian maverick’s brilliance at the finals was certified with Paris-Saint Germain’s decision to make him the most expensive African player at the time, where he’d then go on to form a brilliant partnership with Ronaldinho.

Cantona retired in 1997, and United signed Teddy Sheringham from Tottenham Hotspur as his replacement. In an alternate reality of ifs, buts and maybes, perhaps Okocha could’ve been the guy to fill the Frenchman’s boots at the Theatre of Dreams.

While Bergkamp was key to Arsenal till the mid-2000s, Zola departed Chelsea just before Abramovich’s purchase of the club in 2003.

A year earlier, PSG let the native of Enugu leave on a free transfer for Bolton Wanderers, where he was to .

If events had turned out differently, and the Blues signed unaffiliated Okocha in 2002 to replace the Italian icon, the playmaker could have worked under a certain Jose Mourinho, who joined the club in 2004 and won back-to-back league titles.

Having enjoyed an amazing partnership with Deco at Porto, the Portuguese could, in theory at least, have appreciated Okocha’s ability and harnessed it early doors at the Bridge.

The upshot of this, however, is that Frank Lampard’s career may have been affected by the Nigerian’s presence, and consequently he’d probably not have become the club’s all-time top scorer and the Prem’s highest scoring midfielder.

In truth, the fantasy of having Okocha play for one of these Premier League winning sides persists, but it wasn’t to be.

Genius playmakers typified the early years of the English top flight, and it’s a shame the Nigerian maestro didn’t get to strut his stuff in England sooner than he did with that Bolton move in 2002.

Reyna expects minutes to be managed as Dortmund star returns to USMNT after long-term injury

Gio Reyna says he understands his minutes may need to be restricte as he rejoins the U.S. men’s national team for the first time since September.

Reyna missed months with a hamstring injury suffered during the initial round of World Cup qualifiers, only to pick up another knock on returning in February.

He has since returned and featured for 90 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with Cologne over the weekend but, heading into a week with three games in quick succession, Reyna admits he is likely to have his minutes managed by USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter.

What did Reyna say?

“I just want to help the group,” Reyna said. “I know I can help the group, just with my playing and just being here. Obviously, I’ve been in the group in the past many times.

“We have really important games and our main goal is to go the World Cup and that’s what I’m here to help us do.

“I guess over the three games, obviously, I’m coming off a long injury, we’re going to see. I’m definitely going to be managed in some sort of way, but we’ll see. We’re figuring it out now.

“The main goal is obviously to qualify and then obviously to leave the camp healthy. So yeah, we’re going to be smart with it.”

Asked about his fitness, Reyna said he feels sound but still needs more time to feel totally back to where he once was.

“It’s going to take some time,” he said. “I was off for a long time so I understand that. I’ve got to take it one day at a time and just try to try to improve.”

Watching on

Reyna has missed all but one camp for the USMNT since the start of qualifying, with injury in the initial round costing him months of games.

As a result, he has been forced to watch on as the U.S. has navigated World Cup qualifying towards this final round.

The U.S. sit second in the table, knowing that results against Mexico and Panama would ensure them of a World Cup spot, and Reyna is glad to be back and glad to have a chance to contribute to that goal after missing so much time.

“It was really hard,” he admitted. “It was really hard being out, just not playing for that amount of time in general. Not necessarily the national team but just in general, not playing.

“Of course, these are important qualifier games. It was tough staying up late until 3 or 4am watching the games in Germany. It definitely motivated me to try to be back as soon as possible.”

#NoToRicketts trends in blow for Chelsea ownership hopefuls who will meet fans if they get preferred bidder status

The Ricketts family’s bid to buy Chelsea suffered a significant blow after supporters turned on them just as three or four preferred bidders are set to be decided upon by Raine Group.

The US consortium led by Tom Ricketts, the chairman of Major League Baseball (MLB) team Chicago Cubs, with the backing of Citadel founder Ken Griffin who is reportedly worth $26.5 billion, has some of the highest financial support of any option for the Blues.

However, , along with the recent underperformance of his MLB team.

What can Ricketts do?

New York investment bank Raine Group are imminently set to decide preferred bidders alongside Chelsea’s senior staff, including Marina Granovskaia, Bruce Buck and Eugene Tenenbaum.

Should Ricketts’ group get through, they have plans to meet with Chelsea Supporters Trust (CST) and Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), who are the most influential fan groups.

With the UK Government also involved in the process, Ricketts has already had a call with Chelsea and Fulham MP Greg Hands.

They are thought to have a good chance of reaching the next stage despite the backlash, with US bidders expected to get favoured.

What do people think in Chicago?

Head of the Chelsea Chicago Supporters Club, Brian Wolff – who is also a Cubs season-ticket holder – has caused a stir with his comments about the prospective owner.

“I’ve had a unique position hearing what supporters in Chicago and worldwide have said regarding the Ricketts family’s bid for Chelsea,” he wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. “I can report the vast majority of opinion has been of universal disdain.

“The Ricketts’ political donations, fundraising and support for candidates who do not share the inclusive views of Chelsea Football Club and its supporters are wholly inconsistent with 19 years of fantastic work done by the club and the Chelsea Foundation, most notably as a leader in committing to a living wage and efforts to protect and promote equality for BAME and LGBTQ+ communities.

“Their ownership of Chicago Cubs baseball and redevelopment of Wrigley Field raises serious doubts whether they will build upon the club’s success on the pitch, and also the continued existence of the Chelsea Pitch Owners and the goal to keep Chelsea Football Club playing at Stamford Bridge at our forever home.

“On behalf of countless supporters worldwide, I urge you to reject their bid for ownership of Chelsea Football Club in favour of others who will commit to not only building upon the last two decades of investment in players and infrastructure, but equally important, the investment in supporters and the values we hold dear.”

'This nonsense must stop' – Gyan displeased by Addo’s Ghana squad for Nigeria World Cup qualifier

Legendary Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan was unimpressed by Otto Addo’s first squad as Black Stars coach, taking to social media to lash out at team officials for snubbing in-form Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru.

After weeks of hold-up, Ghana, on Tuesday, announced a 27-man roster for their upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifying play-off fixtures, starting on Friday.

While the selection featured Arsenal midfielder Thomas Teye Partey, Ajax playmaker Mohammed Kudus, Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew and Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey, there was no place for Ashimeru, who has seemingly discovered his spark at the turn of the New Year, having initially struggled following a transfer to Anderlecht from Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg.

“This guy Majeed Ashimeru is the best midfielder in Ghana, after Thomas Partey, PERIOD. I have kept quiet on this but this nonsense must stop. Smh,” an obviously incensed Gyan wrote in a .

The post, however, generated criticism on the striker as many questioned the public nature of such an outburst and his choice of words.

It was not long before the striker, who last featured for the Black Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, pulled down the tweet, going on to render an apology.

He posted: “I still insist that Ashimeru deserves to be in this current Black Stars BUT am sorry for using the word ‘Nonsense’ in my statement, so I unreservedly withdraw that word, I was carried by my emotions. Go Ghana!”

So far this season, Ashimeru has featured in all but one of Anderlecht’s 32 league games, starting in each of the club’s last seven games. His stats include three goals and three assists.

The midfielder was not the only notable absentee as Fiorentina ace Joseph Alfred Duncan and Crystal Palace man Jeffrey Schlupp were also missing.

Captain Andre Ayew is also out of the double-header due to suspension, while Stade Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana and Reading left-back Baba Rahman are unavailable due to injury.

Ghana are set to host Nigeria at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Friday before travelling away for the return leg at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday.
