WWE Building A Wrestling Hall Of Fame, Another WWE Brand Coming?

Today’s Miami Herald has an article up with with quotes by WWE Executive Vice President of Global Media, Shane McMahon. You can read the entire article here. Some highlights:

— WWE looking to build a Wrestling Hall of Fame: “We’ve been close a number of times. We actually looked at a place in Orlando a few years ago. We don’t know where it’s going to settle, yet. I think it’s probably still a couple of years away, but we’re really anxious to do it.” He added that they have a lot of memorabilia in a warehouse in preparation for the project.

— WWE’s International Expansion: “The countries that we are in, we want to make better. The countries where we are not currently, which aren’t that many, we want to get in, get the market and then bring all of our properties in there. The first thing that we do, from our game plan standpoint, is you have to get on the air. So you need television. Once you have a television partner, you start to build certain things with them. After that, you usually bring in a live event. That’s usually the next hit. Then from there, you bring in your merchandising, your licensing and all the other intellectual property aspects, and that’s how we build the marketplace.”

— Another WWE Brand?: “There could be another entity that develops. We’ll have to see what happens.”

Paul Bearer Talks About Michael Hayes, Undertaker, Vince, Scripting & More

Source: Wrestling-Radio.com

Orlando Quinones of Wrestling-Radio.com has conducted a rare 40-minute interview with legendary manager Paul Bearer. Bearer talks about life after WWE, the recent Michael Hayes incident, managing The Undertaker, working for Vince McMahon, how the business has changed over the years and much more. It’s worth checking out. You can listen to the exclusive audio interview by clicking Here. Some highlights:

– On Life After WWE: Paul Bearer keeps busy by making appearances on the independent scene, saying “There is life after Pro Wrestling”. Believe it or not, Paul still runs his funeral home business to thi sday. He talks about the gastric bypass surgery he had 4 years ago and how it saved his life. He also briefly talked about his sons being “born into the business” and what the future holds for them. Paul told a story of how he broke into the business and says he’s managed over 40 wrestlers.

– The Michael Hayes Incident: Paul Bearer says he grew up with Michael Hayes and he probably knows him better then anybody. He says Hayes has a great mind for wrestling and has been Vince McMahon’s right hand man for several years. Paul says Michael Hayes wouldn’t have been suspended if this happened 10 years ago, but Vince had to suspend him because WWE is a public company and cannot be put at risk. He says Michael Hayes is not a racist and he was joking around and Wrestlemania 24 with Mark Henry. Paul Bearer believes that it was more the people around who took offence to the comments and not Mark Henry.

– Meeting Vince McMahon / “Paul Bearer” gimmick: Rick Rude hooked Paul Bearer up with Vince McMahon and literally told him to write Vince’s number down and call him. He recalls his very first round table meeting with Vince McMahon, JJ Dillion and Pat Patterson at the old Titan Towers.

– Working with The Undertaker: Paul Bearer reflects on managing The Undertaker in his very first match, back when he was known as the masked “Texas Red”. He then tells the story of when he managed The Undertaker we all know today and how it all began back in January 1991.

Scripting Wrestling back then vs. Today: “Back in those days Vince gave us the ball and we ran with it.” Paul says his funeral parlour segment on WWF TV back in the day was never scripted and Vince had confidence Paul and The Undertaker.

Jim Ross Talks About Santino Marella's Arrest, The Kentucky Derby, More

Jim Ross has posted a new blog on his official website. Below are the highlights:

On Big Brown winning the Kentucky Derby:
Big Brown, the pre-race favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, came through for yours truly Saturday during the running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. Big Brown was positioned, prior to the running of the roses, as a cocky but talented athlete who had yet to lose even though he had limited experience.

This same theory or philosophy will work in wrestling if the athlete in question is fundamentally sound enough and charismatic enough to carry the ball. How long has it been since a wrestler “burst” onto the scene and turned the wrestling world upside down? Yeah, it’s been a long time.

Nonetheless, we will now be hearing a steady diet of “can Big Brown win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing”? Likely not…but it does make for a hell of a story.

On Ron Simmons being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame:
Ron Simmons has been a thoroughbred on the gridiron and in the wrestling ring and Ron’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame this year is an amazing honor for the former Florida State Seminole. When Ron defeated Big Van Vader for the World’s Title, as recognized byWCW, it was quite a milestone for African American wrestlers. Bill Watts, who navigated the Junkyard Dog’s storied career in Mid South Wrestling, was instrumental in Simmons getting the chance to be the top hand inWCW. I remember when WCW held a pep rally/press conference for Ron after he became the first, black World’s Champion in the atrium of the CNN Center in Atlanta that was attended by members of virtually every department in Ted Turner’s empire. Ironically, Ron will most likely be remembered best, when his wrestling days have ended, for his catchphrase “DAMN” and his antics as a member of theAPA than for his tenure as the world title holder.

On several WWE Superstars not making it to Montreal on Friday:
Several WWE wrestlers did not make it to Montreal Friday night due to travel issues. I don’t know the details of this calamity, other than when weather hits some of the major airline hubs that Mother Nature usually gets her hand raised. I am flying to Toronto via Dallas and am keeping my fingers crossed that I have no travel issues, but if I do at least I have all day Sunday to arrive in TO and we don’t go on the air until 9 p.m. eastern time Monday night. Better safe than sorry. The King arrives in TO on Monday after wrestling in 4 independent events the past few days.

On Santino Marella’s arrest:
The recent DUI charge levied by Tampa police against Santino Marella backs up my late father’s proclamation that “nothing good ever happens after midnight”. No one is exempt from making a mistake as we are all human. I know, I have made my fair share, but this misstep should be a great lesson for the young talents just getting their careers started in the biz. It’s like the sign that reads “only serious applicant’s need apply,” as it relates to those young people trying to make it to prime time in wrestling where the big money awaits those that master their craft. The days of halfassing it, not taking the process seriously, and not becoming a consummate professional are likely over for those that want to main eventPPVs , etc. In the old days, a guy could be a pain in the ass or a problem in one territory and go to work in another territory for the proverbial fresh start. Things aren’t that way any longer.

Bottega Veneta launches SS21 campaign the old-fashioned way

Bottega Veneta this week unveiled its Spring Summer 2021 advertising campaign, although not via its recently muted social media channels or even its own website.

Shot in Milan and photographed by British photographer Tyrone Lebon, the images were first reported by WWD and quickly proliferated online. The photos show richness in texture, fabrics and contrasts, much as the style of Bottega’s Salon 01 show in London.

To many the featured models are unfamiliar faces, yet they are highly acclaimed in their respective fields, which include author, composer and playwright Sheila Atim and the German conceptual artist Rosemarie Trockel. Trockel is also the author of the book ‘The importance of wearing clothes’ which was written for London show.

With a preference for selling substance over hype, Bottega Veneta is charting its a new visual narrative, a direction that is paying dividends for its recent successes as well as to its parent company, Kering.

The commercial road less traveled

Kering’s other brands are also producing content in newer, less commercial forms, like Gucci’s recent collaboration with Gus Van Sant and Balenciaga’s collection debut via videogame.

A fashion campaign is often a collaboration between a brand’s creative director, an art director and the photographer, yet Bottega Veneta’s ‘less is more’ ethos is clearly at the front and center of its communications. With this campaign it succeeds in telling a story without being either overly cerebral or generic. The Italian luxury house may have said adieu to social media but its followers have remained.

Is Bahrain set for another double-header?

Formula 1’s modified 2021 calendar could be set for more disruption and changes that could see Bahrain host another double-header at Sakhir.

The global coronavirus crisis that continues to linger remains a challenge for many nations, with stringent travel restrictions and lockdowns still the norm.

Grand Prix racing’s original packed to the brim 23-race schedule has already undergone a few changes. The season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne has been pushed back to the back-half of the season while the postponed Chinese Grand Prix is likely to be cancelled altogether.

Imola has been slotted in as the second round of the F1 world championship while Portimão is expected to fill the April 25 open date.

However, with COVID-19 cases still trending higher in Portugal in the wake of a third wave of infections, the country’s national health service is overwhelmed, while the mainland lockdown has so failed to reduce the number of cases.

Portimão’s potential inability to host a race in April is forcing a rethink for F1. According to Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, nnother rejuggling of the schedule could lead to Bahrain hosting the first two rounds of the championship, on March 28 and April 4, while Imola could be pushed back to April 25 to allow teams to regroup after Bahrain.

Despite the Automobile Club de Monaco’s reassurances, the principality’s showcase event is also at risk of a cancellation for the second year running.

Monaco’s 2021 motorsport agenda is set to fill up the end of April and the month of May with Formula E, the Historic GP and F1 all taking place over four weeks in the Principality.

However, lead times associated with the street track’s build-out mean that a definitive green light will likely be required by the end of February.

But the ACM remains committed, at least for now, to the dates of its trio of events.

WWE SmackDown Preview: Crowning a Champion?

The following is from WWE.com:

Crowning a champion?
May 23, 2008

The stage was set for Undertaker or Edge to walk out of Judgment Day as the new World Heavyweight Champion. However, things didn’t go as planned for either Superstar. Although Undertaker defeated Edge, it was by count-out. So – as SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero reminded a chorus of booing fans – the title remains vacant.

However, WWE.com has learned Guerrero will kick off Friday Night SmackDown with huge news regarding One Night Stand. Will it involve the ongoing struggle for the title?

Will Edge continue to rely on his cohorts, including fiancée Vickie Guerrero, to help him in his quest to reclaim the gold? Are chinks starting to show in the armor of people the Ultimate Opportunist has surrounded himself with? Last Friday on SmackDown, Bam Neely & Chavo Guerrero opted to walk away from partners Edge, Vickie, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder before a Handicap Match against The Phenom. What will Chavo & Bam do this Friday?

WWE.com has also learned that former SmackDown Assistant General Manager Theodore Long will be a guest on MVP’s VIP Lounge. What will Long have to say about his action on last week’s SmackDown – when he quit so that Guerrero could not fire him?

Batista vowed to hurt Shawn Michaels if The Animal found out HBK faked an injury in their match at Backlash. Recently on Raw, HBK finally admitted he did feign his injury. At Judgment Day, Batista reminded HBK of his warning to hurt him – and it would happen when he least expects it. If and when The Animal does deliver, will HBK be ready for him?

Witness all the fallout from Judgment Day on Friday Night SmackDown at 8/7 CT on The CW Network.

Vince McMahon Says That The Media Can Go "Screw Themselves"

Rajah reader Devin Cutting sent the following:

During the June 16th edition of the Countdown To Raw show on The Score in Canada, host Glenn Schiiler interviewed Vince McMahon. Below are some of the comments.

GS: Canadian fans aren’t eligible to win your millions, but I think people in this country still want to know. How did this idea come about? Did you just wake up one morning and say “You know what? I feel like giving away some money!”?

VM: Quite frankly, that’s about it. I mean the things that come out of my head sometimes…sometimes even I can’t believe them and this is not necessarily one of my better ideas, giving away my personal money, and it’s a total of a million dollars every Monday night. Last week, we had one lady from Texas win $2 and we had another gentleman from Wisconsin win $250,000 and I must admit it gave me more pleasure to give away the $2 than it did the $250,000.

GS: You can see why people may think you’re vindictive or mean-spirited when you get more joy out of the $2.

VM: No, I don’t think I’m vindictive at all. It’s just what I enjoy.

GS: You said you want to attract new fans to your product with this giveaway, but you’re also inviting back former fans who have tuned out over the years, so I ask you this…what does the WWE product of 2008 have to entice people who watched during the Hulkamania years or during the Attitude era when superstars like Steve Austin and The Rock were on top?

VM: It’s a different program and, at the same time, it’s very similar. It’s still an action adventure. It’s still…I won’t use the word comedy, but we do humor. It’s still a rock ‘n’ roll environment. It’s still a soap opera. It’s still action in terms of athleticism…so it’s all those things and there’s nothing like it on television. It’s a variety show for sure. We’ve been in business for a zillion years and, every Monday night on USA and on The Score, we’re there. We travel all over the country…a matter of fact, all over the world, producing and we’re live every Monday night and there’s so few shows like that. A matter of fact, we have more episodes than any prime time episodic program ever and that includes Gunsmoke and Lassie and things of that nature. We’ve blown away everybody. We’re like 750 some odd episodes and counting.

GS: You’re bringing back the WWE Draft, which is coming up next week on The Score. What was behind that decision?

WM: We don’t do that necessarily every year, but I think we will in the future. It shakes things up. It refreshens the product and we have some major moves planned. It’s a good thing. I think everyone looks forward to that because you don’t know where the superstars or your favorite ones are going or which ones are coming, which issues are resolved, which ones are left open, so it’s an exciting show.

GS: This is a question we have asked WWE superstars in the past and I’d like to get your take on it. Often times it seems that the media only shows a genuine interest in wrestling when there’s a tragedy or a negative event, yet when the WWE does something positive like the annual Tribute To The Troops show, a large portion of the media won’t cover it. Does that bother you or do you just accept it at this point?

VM: Well, the media can go screw themselves. Having said that, we’re making an effort to be more media-friendly, but I don’t know..I think we’re a little too defensive. All of us enjoy this product from time to time and, yeah, we don’t get the credit that we get, but that’s life sometimes. Life is not necessarily fair, but we’re trying to be more media-friendly and educate the media on who we really are and what sort of wonderful product this is and who are our fans and I think once the media finds out, more specifically, who supports us, who our audience really is, then they’ll begin to understand.

GS: You have a reputation for being an extremely hard worker and this industry is a passion of your’s, obviously. How long do you see yourself continuing to do this?

VM: I’ll probably live somewhere beyond 100 and, every day that I do, I’ll be in this business. I love this business. I’m third generation in this business. It really is in my soul and I love to perform. I love to entertain and that’s what all of our performers love to do. You can’t give your audience enough and they can recognize that and appreciate that, so again, it’s a love of what I do. I mean I always say I never go to work because nothing I ever do is work.

BREAKING NEWS: WWE Superstar Arrested For Battery On A Police Officer ~SHOCKING~

Maria's Move To SmackDown, Playboy Rumor Killer, Michelle McCool Update

source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

— Maria was moved over to SmackDown to help balance things out. She wasn’t really needed long-term on Raw anymore due to a potential surplus of babyfaces. SmackDown has three heels in Maryse, Natalya and Victoria, but only two wrestling babyfaces in Cherry and Michelle McCool. Considering that ECW is set to merge with Raw, Kelly Kelly will soon be a part of the Monday night crew, which would leave one less babyface for SmackDown shows. Also, WWE is somewhat limited in what they can do with Cherry, and Eve Torres isn’t wrestling quite yet, hence the addition of Maria to SmackDown because they really do need her. On Raw, Candice Michelle is set to come back soon and Melina is now a babyface (her sudden injury kind of puts a wrench in things, but WWE is going through with their original plan to move Maria anyway). They also have Ashley, but her status in WWE remains unclear. It looks like Mickie will be on her own for a few weeks unless Ashley suddenly returns, but with the eventual returns of Candice, Melina & probably Ashley, plus the addition of Kelly to the Monday night crew in September, Maria wasn’t really needed anymore.

— Some sites are reporting that WWE is grooming Layla El to appear in Playboy next year due to her recent move to Raw. The report was credited to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, but never actually reported in the newsletter. Dave Meltzer thought Kelly Kelly was going to be moved over to Raw in last week’s drafts since it looks like WWE is grooming her for Playboy in 2008, not to mention that Raw is the most watched brand. For some reason Kelly Kelly was misinterpreted as Layla.

— Michelle McCool posted two new blogs on her WWE Fan Nation account yesterday. In one of her blogs she’s asking for suggestions from the fans. “What do you guys want? What do you want to see? What type of “look” do you guys like when I take my pictures? What type of feud would you like to see?,” McCool wrote. She also posted some new personal photos of herself. {Blogs link}
