  • JAN. 18 UPDATES: Even MORE WWE Stars Quitting?, WWE vs. AEW In Signing Talents

More on WWE Giving Raises to Wrestlers; AJ Styles' Next Contract

WWE continues to lock down any of their talent whose contacts are expiring or close to expiring with lucrative offers combined with friendly work schedules depending on the wrestler. It was recently reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that WWE was willing to double the salary of any wrestler who was willing to re-sign “on the spot” likely as a way to keep them away from AEW. According to a rajah.com source, this report is true and the company is also open to giving raises up to 50% to non-wrestlers and legends whose deals are up for renewal.

Another source adds that talent whose agreements are expiring in 2019 are in the best position because of WWE’s TV deals set to bring in a huge influx of revenue and because the launch of All Elite Wrestling has given talent leverage that they didn’t have before. One wrestler who was noted to us as someone that will command a lot of interest by multiple promotions is AJ Styles, whose deal is rumored to be expiring in the second quarter of 2019 and WWE is expected to do everything in their power – including giving Styles massive concessions on his work schedule – in order to keep him with the company.

As we reported previously, WWE issued the following statement on their official website regarding the ongoing contract situation with Ambrose:

Eli Drake On Power Outage At Impact Taping, Why TV Is Still Crucial, Pursuit

Impact Wrestling star Eli Drake recently appeared as a guest on the WINCLY Podcast and spoke with Wrestling Inc’s Nick Hausman for an in-depth interview. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On the 1/7 Impact Wrestling tapings, where an unexpected power outage led to him cutting a promo in the dark without a microphone: “Well, the funny thing was, I was completely comfortable in the sense that I was like, ‘Oh, this is fine. I’ll just go in, I’ll grab a microphone and I’ll talk.’ Until I realized that the microphone’s not gonna work because the power’s out,” Drake said. “So at that point, I was like, ‘Alright, well, we’re gonna make the best of it.’ And I just perched myself up on the turnbuckle and I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna start to tell a story.’ And I had no idea what I was gonna talk about or where I was gonna go, and then down marches Tommy Dreamer.

“So we kinda had a back and forth. I took a quick survey of who wants me to leave, who wants me to stay. I think they wanted me to stay, actually. And then they just brought a match out, and I think I stood in to be honorary bell ringer for a minute. It’s just, I’ve been doing this for so long and modeling myself after guys that I watched growing up. I feel like you gotta know how to roll with the punches and how to just be able to work and think on your feet.”

On Impact Wrestling moving from Pop TV to the Pursuit Channel and streaming on Twitch: “It’s an interesting dynamic because Anthem actually owns Pursuit so it makes it a little bit convenient in the sense that, now there’s a little bit of freedom as far as what we can do for simulcasting. That’s why we’re able to do Twitch at the same time, so anybody who doesn’t get the channel can also catch it on Twitch.

“And Pursuit is – I guess a bit of an outlier of a channel in a sense. [You can’t watch] unless you have particular provider, but again, like I said, you can do that on Twitch, you can do that on GWN when it goes later. But I think it at least gives us some freedom to do what we want, since it’s our channel. And I think that’s kinda cool in a sense because now you can really, kinda let the dog off the leash in a certain sense, creatively. And see where that goes and then that can bode well for future endeavors.”

On lucrative financial business from television advertising keeping cable deals in the wrestling business a necessity: “I think it’s still necessary only because the biggest advertisers are still in television. I think that there is eventually going to transition in to a way where – I think cable is eventually going to go the same way as just regular radio. Where people still listen to it, it still exists, but for the most part, they’ve got MP3, they’ve got satellite radio, they’ve got Pandora. All that kinda stuff. So I think it’s going to become something more like that, where streaming – that’s gonna kinda be the thing.

“So I think the company that can really get to that, and really push that and find a way to monetize that properly to where it can actually replace television, that would make television obsolete. But I think for now, television is still very important again, because you’re running a business at the end of the day and you need money for that, and the money, for the most part, the best amount of money you’re gonna get is from television advertising.”

Corey Graves Opens Up About Being Told He Could No Longer Wrestle, Reveals Triple H Broke The News To Him

WWE commentator Corey Graves was a recent guest on Lilian Garcia’s Chasing Glory podcast where the former NXT tag champion opened up about no longer being able to compete as an in-ring competitor. Graves admits that the moment he found out he could no longer wrestle was one of the worst of his life, but it did give him the luxury of spending a lot of time with the late Dusty Rhodes during classes at the Performance Center.

It was like the whole world came crashing down on me. I couldn’t breathe, I felt like I was gonna burst into tears. I didn’t wanna cry in front of anybody else, so I made a beeline out of the gym up to the locker room. And William Regal was in there. He was standing there, and I walked in and broke down. I told him and all he did, he just stood there and hugged me. It wasn’t like there was anything he could tell me that was gonna make [it better]. Essentially, my dream just came crashing down at a moment’s notice. And he was there for me, and consoled me the best that he could. And by that point, I was panicked. Because I had worked my whole life to get to this point. Now I can’t do it anymore. What the hell am I gonna do? I have a family to support, I’ve sacrificed everything in my life to be here. I’m right here at the cusp and now it’s gone. And that’s a lot to fathom in one moment.

Luckily I had a lot of people — friends and coaches that were around that tried. I remember Bill DeMott was the coach that said, ‘Hey, do you wanna go home, do you want to take some time off?’ And I said, the last thing I need is time off. So I just jumped into everything. So a few weeks went by, we had some conversations about what I was gonna do. They weren’t gonna just release me, it wasn’t like I did something wrong. It was just a crappy situation. Essentially, they gave me the keys to the kingdom and said, ‘Hey, figure something out.’ So I went and tried everything and anything. I started running the music at NXT live events, learning the production end of things. I was helping out Dusty with promo class, which turned out to be one of the best blessings in disguise. I got taken out of the ring, but for the better part of a year I basically stood side by side with Dusty Rhodes all the time. So I got to spend countless hours with him and get to know him and learn. I probably learned more after getting shut down from wrestling about the business and characters and just life.

Graves also reveals that it was Triple H who broke the news to him when he approached the COO during a workout.

I will never forget. I would argue it was the worst moment of my life. We were at the Performance Center, and Triple H who is the boss, he was there. And I had been on the shelf for a few weeks, and I was just like ‘Man, I don’t know what’s taking so long.’ And I’m talking to the doctors and saying ‘Hey, when can I get back in?’ And they’re just saying, ‘Well, we’re just waiting to see some things, we’re waiting on some tests.’ So I couldn’t get a straight answer from anybody. So I walked up to Hunter, and he was in the middle of a workout. I was passing through the gym and I said, ‘Hey boss, do you have any updates for anything?’ And I don’t think he was prepared at that moment to tell me, but he didn’t want to sugarcoat anything, and he just kind of blurted it out in a way that — I think I caught him off-guard, so he didn’t have a gentle way of telling me. He was just like, ‘You know, I would expect the worst.’ And he tried to justify it, but you could tell he wasn’t ready for that in the moment. He didn’t want to lie to me, so I respect that.

Rousey Upset With WM35 Changes, Lynch Says She "Might Have To Do Something"

As seen on Monday night’s WWE Elimination Chamber 2019 pay-per-view “go-home” edition of RAW, the plans for the RAW Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania 35 changed.

Vince McMahon returned on Monday night’s show to announce that Becky Lynch’s suspension has been extended to 60 days, making her ineligible to compete in time for WrestleMania 35. As a result, McMahon announced that Charlotte Flair will be replacing her against Rousey.

On her official Instagram page, Rousey posted the following message after the changes were announced on RAW:

“This isn’t what’s best for business. This isn’t what’s in demand. I have no idea what the hell this is. Vince McMahon doesn’t even believe in his own girl [Charlotte Flair] – If he didn’t make us the main event of [Survivor Series] he’s sure as hell not making us the main event of [WrestleMania]. The [Women’s Evolution] was robbed tonight.”

This led to “The Man” chiming in with a response to Rousey’s IG post on her own official Twitter page. Lynch wrote the following:

“So Ronnie is afraid that old Char is dragging her out of the [WrestleMania] main event, huh? Rightfully so. We all know who was making this happen, and now I’m sitting at home watching it collapse. Might have to do something about that.”

Check out the social media posts from Rousey and Lynch below.

Jim Ross Talks About The Undertaker's Current Relationship With WWE

On a recent episode of the Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast, WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross spoke at length about The Undertaker taking bookings outside of WWE, such as the Starrcast II convention. Featured below is an excerpt from the interview where “Good Ole’ J.R.” comments on The Undertaker.

“He’s done many Comic Cons in the past and WWE has booked him at like World Of Wheels or some of those type things, he’s done those and I’m sure he’ll do more of them but when you are in his position and you’ve got young children, he’s not on the road and I’m sure he doesn’t want to be on the road all the time and I wouldn’t at his age and his obligations and the miles on the car,” Ross said. “I’m not surprised about it and to me it’s just a third part booking. He’s still under contract to WWE and I’m sure WWE gave him the blessing to go make a payday. When I had and was working on (NJPW) I had a contract with WWE and at the same time I was working for AXS TV. Now figure that out? I had a contract with them too and WWE had never allowed that but they changed. They were easing up on some things, so basically it was just a matter of me going and doing the thing that I love and keeping my rhythm and making damn good money on the side and they like that and I like it so that is what we did for the first two or three years of that AXS TV deal and it was all with the blessing of WWE and Vince. But the thing with Taker is not and I don’t see it as a sign of anything changing or he’s branching out or he’s going to start wrestling because he’s not going to wrestle anywhere else I can guaranf*ckingtee you that. I can see him doing appearances to sign his name and take a picture and the way they’ve done it as The Undertaker / Mark Callaway (AKA) is for legal purposes as far as the WWE being a publically traded company and The Undertaker IP (the intellectual property) being one of their assets so it was kind of news but I want to work that thing too and as we speak I am under contract. Lawler’s working it and he’s under contract to WWE, I think Ricky Steamboat may be under contract with one of those legends deals but I’m not sure about that. I can see your point and it is a good question but I just don’t read anything into it.”

“It’s not a critical deal and it’s not a big story breaking here and the tip of the iceberg, I see nothing there in that regard. I know that he is getting and from what I understand he’s making and getting great offers to go in and sit down and sign his name and you know like I said people have got to think logically. He’s got a wife, he’s got young children, he’s got a son who is in college so I just think it is just normal parenting being the father, being the husband and all that good stuff and you know they are going to take care of him. I did see something on Twitter where he was going someplace in a private jet, well that ain’t bad and don’t cry for me Argentina because you are riding in a private jet. I think it is just a business opportunity and they are letting him go out and make a payday. My theory is always on this fellas and if I was there today and had any influence on talent, you want your talent to make all the money that they can and all of it that he or she can earn you want them to have and if they have a chance to go do some Wizard World or something along those lines of a big Comic Con and it works out with the schedule than you encourage them to go do it. Go make the extra money and do something smart with it like save it and don’t go have a good weekend at Wizard World.”

Batista Never Seriously Considered AEW; Latest on WrestleMania Card

— Even though there was speculation that Batista was considering signing on with All Elite Wrestling, according to the latest Observer, he had no interest in wrestling anywhere but WWE. As of late last week, he had not finalized a deal with WWE but there were discussions on him having a match with the Undertaker or HHH at WrestleMania, with the latter now the obvious direction.

— As of this past weekend, the Undertaker was stil not on the card for WrestleMania, whereas Kurt Angle and John Cena were. The Observer notes that the card for WWE’s biggest PPV is still far from decided – which is different from previous years when the lineup would be locked in months in advance.
