Ocasio-Cortez primary opponent Caruso-Cabrera goes on fierce attack in online debate: 'AOC is always MIA'

Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who is running a primary challenge to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-CortezAlexandria Ocasio-CortezAttorney says 75-year-old man shoved by Buffalo police suffered brain injury How language is bringing down Donald Trump Highest-circulation Kentucky newspaper endorses Charles Booker in Senate race MORE, slammed the New York Democrat’s response to the coronavirus on Monday, saying, “AOC is always MIA.”

Caruso-Cabrera has relentlessly targeted Ocasio-Cortez since she launched her campaign in February. Last month, she called the freshman lawmaker “out of touch” for voting against a $484 billion coronavirus stimulus package.

“My opponent AOC made very clear all of her priorities, and yet, what I don’t understand is why AOC is always MIA,” Caruso-Cabrera said during an online debate hosted by BronxNet.

Caruso-Cabrera said that Ocasio-Cortez remained in her Washington, D.C., apartment building with a Whole Foods in the lobby “at the height of the crisis,” even when the House was not in session.

“Me, day one, I was out delivering food, I was out delivering masks — I wasn’t even elected,” Caruso-Cabrera.

Ocasio-Cortez responded that her reason for staying in her apartment was that she “wasn’t feeling very well,” and that she has helped raise nearly $500,000 for pantries in the community, in addition to helping to deliver meals to residents herself.

“You’re always working on your celebrity status, You’re divisive, and you work against the party,” Caruso-Cabrera said.

Ocasio-Cortez said she voted against the coronavirus stimulus bill in question because it excluded benefits for immigrants and American citizens married to immigrants, which she would never support “in a district that is 50 percent immigrant.”

Ocasio-Cortez added that she has collaborated “a lot” with fellow members, saying that she “cosponsored hundreds of bills” with both Democratic and Republican colleagues.

Caruso-Cabrera also targeted Ocasio-Cortez’s sponsorship of the Green New Deal, calling it a “divisive policy that doesn’t actually achieve anything,” while she herself would work on “very specific things” to aid the district, such as developing sea walls for protection from floods.

Warren's VP bid faces obstacle: Her state's Republican governor

Buzz is growing about Sen. Warren (D-Mass.) is in regular contact with Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, and plans to hold a big online fundraiser for him on June 15. The high-profile progressive has also increased her outreach to Biden’s longtime Senate allies, sending the message that she’s eager to join Team Biden, according to Senate sources.

Picking Warren could give Biden a boost in the polls. A Morning Consult–Politico survey released Wednesday found that 26 percent of registered voters said they would be more likely to vote for Biden if he chose Warren, putting her ahead of the other eight women he is said to be considering.

Her greatest impact, according to the survey, would be among voters under the age of 45, as well as black and Hispanic voters — three blocs Democrats see as key to winning the White House and picking up Senate seats.

But picking Warren would likely cost Democrats one of those Senate seats, at least temporarily, if Biden were to defeat President TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE.

Warren represents a state with a Republican governor, Charlie Baker, who has the power to pick anyone he wants to fill her seat, should it become vacant, until a special election sometime in 2021.

Massachusetts law requires a special election to be held between 145 and 160 days after a Senate seat becomes vacant, a significant problem if Biden wins the White House and the Senate is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats.

If Baker were to appoint a Republican to replace Warren, Democrats would need a net pickup of four Senate seats — instead of three — and control of the White House to win back the Senate majority, where the GOP holds a 53-47 advantage.

Meanwhile, two other potential VP candidates — Sens. Given how the Senate battleground map is shaping up, a 50-50 Senate tie — counting both Massachusetts Senate seats in the Democratic column — is becoming a distinct possibility.

How quickly a potential Baker appointee could be casting votes in the chamber would be determined by Warren.

If she were to resign on Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, that could shave off 61 days during which a temporary appointee would serve in the 117th Congress, assuming the Senate convenes on Jan. 4, the first Monday in January, as it often has.

That would still give a Republican senator at least 84 days to serve in a new Senate session.

If one seat means the difference between three more months of GOP control, that could seriously blunt the first 100 days of a Biden administration, potentially delaying the confirmation of Cabinet nominees and the consideration of Democratic-backed legislation.

Some strategists say it’s a gamble worth taking.

“To me it’s become increasingly clear that she would be the strongest pick electorally,” said Mike Lux, a Democratic strategist who worked in the Clinton White House. “She’s actually very strong with African American and Latino and Latina voters.”

Lux said Warren “also really increases the enthusiasm level, which is one of the key things the Biden folks need to figure out.”

“There’s this big enthusiasm gap in a lot of the polls between Biden and Trump, and I think Warren would really help change that dynamic,” he added.

Warren herself appears enthusiastic about the VP possibility.

One Senate Democrat said her jockeying for the veep slot has been noticeable, while other Senate sources noted she’s been reaching out more to Biden’s allies on Capitol Hill.

This month she co-sponsored Sen. Biden and Warren have been speaking regularly in recent weeks, about once a week, according to sources with knowledge of the phone calls.

Warren has also spoken to former President Obama, mostly about her ideas surrounding the pandemic.

In recent months, Obama has told those around him that he was impressed with the ideas she had on the campaign. Last fall, he went to bat for her when speaking to donors who were turned off by her politics, vouching for her political chops and her fluency on policy.

“With the economy in the gutter, I think he believes she can play a big role in the recovery,” said one Obama ally. “He appreciates her ideas.”

One Biden ally said the former vice president also “appreciates and respects” Warren’s ideas.

“She’s at the top of the list for a reason,” the ally said.

Liberal strategists who want to see Warren on the ticket say the overwhelmingly Democratic state Senate and House in Massachusetts could change the state’s law to require Baker to pick someone from the same party as Warren.

Democrats control 34 seats in the Massachusetts state Senate while Republicans hold four, with two vacancies. In the state House, Democrats hold a 126-31 advantage, with seats vacant.

Six states require the governor to appoint a replacement of the same party as the departing senator, according to a 2017 report by the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Lux said Baker’s potential appointment of a Republican successor “is pretty easy to get around given that Democrats have a veto-proof majority and could easily change the law to make it more like other states where if the person who leaves is a Democrat than they have to pick a Democrat.”

Debra O’Malley, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts secretary of the commonwealth, said, “There’s no provision for the state legislature to veto the choice by the governor.”

But O’Malley noted that the Massachusetts state legislature could change the law between now and next year and override a veto.

“This is the law as it stands now. That law could change and in fact that law has changed multiple times in the last 20 years,” she added.

Charles Chamberlain, chairman of liberal advocacy group Democracy for America, said it would be worth changing Massachusetts election law to get Warren on the ticket.

“If she were to join the ticket as the vice presidential candidate, I think it would make progressives across this country very excited for this ticket,” he said. “It would really make a difference in motivating, energizing and engaging progressive voters.”

The survey from the left-leaning firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows Biden with a 4-point lead over Trump, 49 percent to 45 percent. That’s the biggest lead for the former vice president ever recorded in a PPP poll of North Carolina voters.

The race is still close, but the poll suggests that North Carolina is certainly in play for Democrats. The last time a Democrat carried the state in a presidential election was in 2008, when former President Obama was running for his first term.

The poll is also the latest sign of trouble for Trump in a state that he won in the 2016 presidential race.

A Quinnipiac University poll of Texas voters released on Wednesday showed Biden and Trump running neck and neck in the Lone Star State. Meanwhile, a Fox News poll showed Biden leading by 9 points in Wisconsin, 4 points in Arizona and 2 points in Ohio. Each of those states helped power Trump’s upset victory over Clinton four years ago.

Polls are not predictive of election outcomes and often reflect voter sentiment at a particular moment in time. Still, the surveys come as Trump stares down several crises, including the coronavirus pandemic, staggering unemployment numbers and widespread civil unrest over racial injustice and police brutality following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

In North Carolina’s contested Senate race, Cunningham and Tillis are statistically tied at 43 percent and 41 percent support respectively. Roughly 16 percent of voters remain undecided in that race.

The race between Cunningham and Tillis is among the most closely watched Senate contests in the country. It’s one of four races — along with contests in Arizona, Colorado and Maine — that both Democrats and Republicans see as pivotal to which party holds control of the Senate in 2021 and beyond. The Cook Political Report currently rates it as a toss-up.

Polls in the North Carolina Senate race have been all over the map. A poll from the Republican-leaning Civitas Institute released on Wednesday showed Tillis with a 2-point lead over Cunningham. And before that, an East Carolina University survey showed the GOP incumbent with a 1-point lead.

The PPP poll surveyed 949 North Carolina voters from June 2 to 3. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

“Washington is full of big spenders. Let’s make them squeal,” Ernst says.

Ernst’s campaign responded in a statement to The Hill, hitting her Democratic opponent, Theresa Greenfield.

“The only crickets are from Theresa Greenfield who is silent on virtually every question from Iowans, ranging from radical proposals like defunding the police to her record of evicting small businesses,” said a spokesman for Ernst’s campaign.

Ernst will face Greenfield, who easily won the state’s Democratic Senate primary last week, in November.

The Cook Political Report rates the race as “lean Republican,” but a survey released last month by the left-leaning firm Public Policy Polling showed Ernst leading Greenfield by just 1 point.

Latest on Austin Aries, Reason For World Cup, Alberto on Impact?

Impact Wrestling has gotten the wrestling world buzzing after Austin Aries no-sold the finish to his main event match against Johnny Impact for the Impact World Championship at Bound for Glory this past weekend. Petey Williams later claimed on his podcast that Aries had left Impact completely after the show and that he is not scheduled to compete for the promotion going forward. According to SEScoops, the plan is for Aries to take on a ‘loose cannon’ gimmick, and he may even be appearing in other promotions like ROH to sell that he is really finished with Impact. After a couple of weeks or so, Austin Aries is set to eventually make his return to Impact Wrestling and likely challenge Impact again for his world title.
One of the matches announced for the Crown Jewel event that WWE will be hosting in Saudi Arabia next month is a “WWE World Cup” match, which will see eight competitors fight in a tournament. Why has WWE decided to hold their first-ever World Cup tournament all of a sudden? According to Wrestling Observer Radio, it all stems from a conflict between Saudi Arabia and the nation of Qatar. The FIFA World Cup will be coming to Qatar in 2022, which the Saudis attempted to bid for but lost. As a result, Saudi officials requested that WWE host a World Cup tournament of their own when they come back to the nation later this year. WWE’s Crown Jewel event will be taking place on November 2nd.
Alberto El Patron has already announced that he will be competing in a few MMA fights soon, but it appears that his pro wrestling career may not be completely finished. A few reports online have been claiming that Impact Wrestling is considering bringing back the controversial former world champion at some point in the near future. Impact Wrestling released Alberto earlier this year when he no-showed a few events that he had been scheduled for, but management reportedly feels as if his personal issues are past him now. On the other hand, Ringside News says that these statements are false and Alberto won’t be coming back to Impact Wrestling for now. Stay tuned for the latest updates on Alberto’s status with Impact Wrestling.
