CA Schools Reopening: Masks For Students, Staff; Smaller Classes

CALIFORNIA — State education officials on Monday unveiled a new set of guidelines for public schools that reopen in the fall amid the coronavirus pandemic, with recommendations including face coverings for all students and teachers, social distancing inside classrooms and the continued presence of distance learning.

The guidelines do not include any required changes, nor do they have any suggestions for when school districts should reopen. That will be up to each of the state’s nearly 1,000 districts to decide for themselves, state schools Superintendent Tony Thurmond said during a Monday morning news conference.

Distance learning is likely to be paired with in-person classes, creating a “hybrid model” in many districts, Thurmond said.

And even as schools prepare to reopen within months, they could potentially shut down again if another wave of COVID-19 cases arrives in the fall, Thurmond conceded.

“We have to prepare” for a possible return to distance learning, he said.

Released online Monday, the 62-page guidebook includes a number of recommendations that would make California’s schools look drastically different from before the coronavirus crisis. All students and staff should wear face coverings, the state says, including on school buses and while entering or leaving campuses.

Classrooms should be rearranged to provide at least 6 feet of distance between students, and schools should minimize movements during the day by students and staff, the state recommends.

Fewer students may need to come to school each day, in order to maintain distancing inside, according to state officials, meaning class sizes may be reduced. The state is also considering rotating schedule models — for example, students in kindergarten through third grade could attend school Mondays and Wednesdays, fourth through sixth grades would attend Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Fridays could be reserved for distance learning.

Alternatively, younger students in kindergarten through third grade may continue attending school because reading instruction is most effective in-person, while older students would continue with distance learning, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Gregson said Monday.

Funding remains an issue

As state legislators continue to negotiate next year’s state budget, Thurmond said Monday he was hopeful that cuts to K-12 education would be spared.

Still, Thurmond said, California is asking Congress to help the state cover its education costs.

Natalya Discusses WWE Path in Muscle & Fitness Magazine

WWE RAW Superstar Natalya tells Muscle & Fitness magazine writer Steve Mazzucchi in a feature article that she battled her way to success in the WWE despite not being a perfect fit during the Divas Era of the women’s division.
Here is what Natalya told Mazzucchi on advice she received from her friend Beth Phoenix as she was trying to break into the WWE:
“When I debuted, WWE was doing the Diva Searches and hiring models, and I’m like your traditional lady wrestler,” she says. “I’m not skinny and I can’t dance. I remember Beth [Phoenix] saying: ‘Nattie, you’ve just gotta fake it ’til you make it. One day they’re gonna be ready for us.’ ”

The article points out that she started her wrestling journey in 2000, but didn’t get a WWE contract until 2007. Natalya also spoke about her WrestleMania 35 match with Phoenix in which they challenged for the WWE women’s tag belts against The Boss N Hug Connection, The IIconics and Nia Jax and Tamina. Though the match was won by The IIconics, Natalya spoke about how much of an advancement in the women’s division that match and the main event for the RAW and SmackDown women’s championships between Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair that represented.
“It’s just surreal, because I feel like my dad has played a big part in all these wonderful things happening, but I also feel like WWE understands how much I’ve contributed,” Nattie reflects. “That’s why this all feels so good now, being able to wrestle and perform with all these strong female competitors. And it goes back to, ‘Why do I love this?’ Because it makes me excited to get up in the morning and live my dream.” Spoken like a beyond-worthy wrestling dynasty heiress. 2Pawz must be so proud.”

The fitting representation of the Axe of St. Olaf

What’s the most notable sports story that’s involved St. Olaf in the past 18 months outside of its announcement to drop wrestling?

The answer, known to the entire sporting world, is the school’s place in the fight to kick out Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference juggernaut St. Thomas out of the conference.

The story wasn’t just prominent in the Star Tribune here in Minnesota, but it made the AP and even ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt noted the boot. If you scratch the surface of the St. Thomas story, you find St. Olaf. So when wrestling gets cut, what are the optics?

From the top down, it looks like there’s an allusion to giving up rather than fighting. Quitting, rather than getting better. Yes, you got beat 97-0 in football to a school with more students. Let’s rally the troops and kick them out of the conference. No, you didn’t give your wrestling team and its student-athletes the basic resources teams need to be competitive – let’s penalize them even further by ruining their college experience with no option to save it. The school has made its priorities known, being competitive isn’t what they want to be known for.

I’m Hall of Fame wrestling announcer and writer Jason Bryant and today on The Guillotine Grapevine, I continue to look into the issues at St. Olaf surrounding its wrestling program and talk with alum Ryan Timmerman, a two-time All-American for the program under coach Sean Ahrar.
