Leclerc: Unexpected runner-up spot ‘feels like a victory’

Charles Leclerc undoubtedly made the most of his Sunday in Austria, the Ferrari driver salvaging an unexpected second-place finish thanks to a solid drive, attrition and lucky circumstances.

The Monegasque finished the incident-packed opening race of the 2020 season third on the road but inherited second after Lewis Hamilton was handed a 5-second time penalty for causing a collision with Red Bull’s Alex Albon.

However, in the closing stages of the 71-lap race Leclerc overhauled both Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and McLaren’s Lando Norris to stake his claim to a spot on the podium.

Bottas wins from Leclerc, Norris on the podium!

“I’m extremely happy, it feels like a victory today,” Leclerc told Sky F1’s Jenson Button. “A nice surprise but a good one.

“I think we did everything perfect today to be honest to finish second.

“We had a little bit of luck, obviously, with Lewis’s penalty. Some crashes here and there and that was a goal to take every opportunity we had even though we didn’t have the pace to finish where we were I think.

“P2, I am extremely satisfied and there’s still a lot of work to do. We are still far away and we are not where we want to be, but anything is possible.

“So we need to keep the mental strong, all the team work as a team and I’m pretty sure we’ll come very well, it will take time.”

With little to lose given his car’s disappointing relative performance, Leclerc said he was on a charge from the outset, especially after each successive safety car period.

“I wanted to be very aggressive because at every safety car I was struggling at Turn 1 to Turn 3, I knew there was no opportunity for me here.

“But I knew that my opportunity will come if me someone will do a mistake and Lando slowed down a little bit with Sergio and I went for it, and the other one with Sergio was pretty tough but I enjoyed it.

“I would rate this as one of my best races since I arrived in F1, because I didn’t do any mistakes.”

Sami Zayn Reportedly Ready To Return To WWE

Last Tuesday night on SmackDown LIVE, Kevin Owens returned to the ring for the first time since undergoing double knee surgery last October. His best friend, Sami Zayn, is ready to return to action as well, according to Dave Meltzer on a recent edition of The Wrestling Observer Radio Program.
Zayn has been recovering since undergoing double shoulder and rotator cuff surgery back in June. It appears that Zayn is now just waiting for WWE to work on a way to bring him back.
It is unknown if Zayn will return as a face and work with Owens, or continue working as a heel. It is also not known what brand he will be appearing on.

Throughout the time of the injury, Zayn was not rushing to get back into the ring. This past December, Zayn appeared on the Talk is Jericho Podcast and stated why he is not itching to return as soon as he can, as seen below:
“Maybe I’m overstating my lack of desire to return,” Zayn prefaced. “I do miss performing, but like [Jericho] said, I’ve been doing this a super long time. We’re on the road a lot. [Jericho] know[s] how it is. I just know that when I’ll be back, I’ll probably enjoy it. But I’m not sitting there itching and clawing [to return]. And I don’t know that my employer will want to hear that, like, ‘does this guy not care?’ But, no, I’m not even close [to being cleared to return]. I need a couple more months!”
The Former NXT & PWG Champion has been rehabbing inside The Performance Center down in Orlando, Florida. WWE aired the promo below for his return last December, however have not run any other promos hyping up his return since.

Flair Says Harley Race Has Been Diagnosed With Terminal Cancer

WWE Hall Of Famers Ric Flair & Hulk Hogan reunited on stage last night at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey for a “Legends Of The Ring” Event. They participated in a special discussion and Q&A that was moderated by WWE Hall Of Famer Jimmy Hart.
Flair told fans in attendance that WWE Hall Of Famer Harley Race has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, according to Jay Alletto, who attended the event and tweeted a few highlights.
Race has dealt with a number of health issues over the past few years. WWE announced in June 2017 that Race broke both legs after a serious fall in his home in Troy, Missouri. Race was still using a scooter to get around as of October 2018. He was expected to make a full recovery from the fall, but was still recovering as of last fall. He did visit backstage at a WWE SmackDown Event in St. Louis in mid-November. Race, who turns 76 on April 11th, was also still visiting his Harley Race Wrestling Academy three times per week as of last October. He has also underwent operations on his neck, hips, knees and his back over the years.

There is no confirmation on the diagnosis reported by Flair as of this writing, but we will keep you updated. Race is currently scheduled to appear at his World League Wrestling Night Of Champions IV Event on March 19th in St. Louis, Missouri with NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, Ryback & Nick Aldis. He also made a special appearance at an Absolute Intense Wrestling Indie Event last Saturday in Akron, OH.
Below are a few more of Alletto’s tweets from the event including The Legends being asked who they would want to wrestle on The WWE roster today. The Nature Boy named a heel Roman Reigns while The Hulkster named John Cena as a heel Hollywood Hogan.

Flair is on fire tonight. Stories are amazing. Hogan is way more preserved but is also hilarious. This is great stuff.

Fan Question to Ric Flair & Hulk Hogan: Who would you want to wrestle on the WWE roster today?
Flair: Roman Reigns as a heel, with the sympathy he has right now.
Hogan: John Cena, as a heel Hollywood Hulk Hogan

Overall, @HulkHogan & @RicFlairNatrBoy on stage together, from the 6th row, was an amazing experience.
Some hilarious stories. Ric didn’t cry! They teased each other. Told stories I’ve never heard.
The fan questions were atrocious tho. I didn’t get chosen.
Great time!

Ricochet & Ciampa Pulled Again, Bruno Book, New SmackDown Match

Click:bronze valve
It was recently reported that NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa may be dealing with a neck injury. Ciampa has already been pulled from some of his upcoming appearances, and unfortunately, he has just been removed from another event. The Adventureland store in Blackwood, New Jersey has removed both Ciampa and Ricochet from their planned appearance at the store this Sunday. Although Ciampa is out injured right now, Ricochet is still good to go. This has led some to assume that Ricochet will be competing at Fastlane this Sunday. If Ricochet does wrestle on the pay-per-view, the most likely match that would involved him would be he and Aleister Black teaming to face Chad Gable & Bobby Roode and The Revival in a Triple Threat tag team match for the Raw Tag Team Championships.
Legendary professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino passed away nearly one year ago. Sammartino was perhaps the biggest star of his era while he was the reigning champion of the WWWF, and he was recognized with a WWE Hall of Fame induction back in 2013. Sammartino likely had plenty of interesting stories about the business, which he documented in his autobiography in the 1980s. Fortunately, PWInsider has reported that Sammartino’s book has just been re-released. “Bruno” has been revised and expanded with additional stories, comments, and content, while also removing elements that kept kayfabe alive. The book was pushed back following Sammartino’s death last year. Those interested in giving it a read can click here.
Following WWE’s announcement that there will be an open challenge from R-Truth for his United States Championship tonight, the company has decided to announce an additional segment that will be taking place during tonight’s episode of the series. Recent main roster call-ups Ricochet and Aleister Black will be teaming up to take on former SmackDown Tag Team Champions Sheamus & Cesaro during tonight’s broadcast. Meanwhile, The Miz will be facing Jey Uso before they compete in a tag team match during WWE’s Fastlane pay-per-view this weekend. Tonight’s show will serve as the go-home edition of SmackDown before Fastlane, so it could turn out to be a rather eventful show.

EXCLUSIVE: @KaylaBraxtonWWE has some news regarding a HUGE #RAW #TagTeamTitles match at #WWEFastlane!
But before it all goes down, @WWEAleister & @KingRicochet will square off against @WWECesaro & @WWESheamus TONIGHT on #SDLive… pic.twitter.com/vnKZCLfvUZ

Mega-match scheduled at Simley

World champs Steveson, Kerkvliet expected to face each other Friday night

One of the most anticipated matches of the Minnesota high school wrestling season – and one that couldn’t take place at the state tournament – is scheduled Friday evening at Simley High School.

On the large scale, the match between Apple Valley (ranked first in Class 3A) and Simley (ranked second in Class 2A) would be enticing enough for the sport’s followers. But they might be even more interested in the match within the match. Two world champions, Apple Valley’s Gable Steveson and Simley’s Daniel Kerkvliet, are expected to face each other in the heavyweight match. Steveson won the 264-pound weight class at the Junior World Championships last summer, and his victory also gave the United States the team championship. The previous two years, Steveson won Cadet World titles.

Kerkvliet is a reigning Cadet World champion. Continue reading at www.hometownsource.com

FOX Reportedly Asking For Commentating & Other Changes on SD LIVE

According to a source within the company, when Smackdown LIVE moves to FOX later this year, it is being said that they would want some changes to the program. Specifically, FOX is looking to move away from WWE’s current three person commentating booth to a two-man booth instead.
The source also says that FOX is also looking for WWE to produce a more edgier product and that they aren’t looking to give into the PC culture that dominates current WWE programming.

Led by technical fall victories from two-time NCAA qualifiers David Kocer and Seth Gross, the South Dakota State wrestling team closed out the dual season with a 22-12 victory over rival North Dakota State before 2,324 fans Friday night at Frost Arena.

In retaining the Border Bell traveling trophy, the 12th-ranked Jackrabbits ran their dual winning streak to 14 matches in improving to 14-2 overall. SDSU also finished undefeated in Big 12 Conference duals for the first time with an 8-0 record. NDSU dropped to 7-10 overall in duals and 1-7 in the Big 12.

Trailing 6-0 through two matches, Kocer put the Jackrabbits on the board with a 16-1 technical fall over Dylan Urbach in the 174-pound match.
