Germany lifts export ban blocking British arms sales to Saudi Arabia

A major obstacle blocking controversial British arms sales to Saudi Arabia has been partially removed after Germany relaxed a ban on weapons exports to the Gulf kingdom.

Angela Merkel’s government agreed the ban would no longer apply to existing joint projects with European partners after intense lobbying from the UK and France.

The decision means British contractors will be able to resume supplying parts for Tornado and Typhoon fighter aircraft used by the Saudi air force in the war in neighbouring Yemen.

Germany imposed a complete ban on arms exports to Saudi Arabia last year in the wake of the killing of the journalist Jamal Kashoggi.

To the anger of the UK and France, the ban also applied to German components for joint projects with European partners.

The leader of the Houthi movement in Yemen condemned Mr Hunt’s demand for Germany to relax the ban.

“Britain sending aid does not change the tragic reality of its arms sales. Jeremy Hunt cannot promote peace while at the same time acting as an arms salesman,” Mohamed Ali al-Houthi told the Guardian.

Mrs Merkel has also come under pressure from German defence manufacturers to end the ban, and the chancellor made clear in recent weeks she was open to at least a partial lifting.

But she faced intense opposition from her main coalition partner, the centre-Left Social Democrats (SPD).

The decision to relax the ban for joint projects was a compromise hammered out in closed-door meetings between the coalition partners.

Under the compromise, the ban will be extended for another six months but existing joint projects with European partners will be exempt provided they meet strict conditions.

One condition is that no fully assembled new weapons may be shipped to Saudi Arabia, which would appear to prevent the delivery of new Eurofighters.

The other condition is that Germany’s European partners ensure any arms they supply to Saudi Arabia are not used in the war in Yemen.

The UK has come under fire from human rights groups for granting export licenses to Saudi Arabia, which has used Tornado and Typhoon fighters in its operations in Yemen.

A House of Lords committee found last month that government export licenses to Saudi Arabia breach international humanitarian law.

The government denies that British arms are used by the Saudis in breach of international law, and argues that maintaining good relations enables Britain to exert influence over the kingdom.

WWE Raw video highlights: Rousey angle, The Shield reunite

An angle with Ronda Rousey closed Raw’s go-home show for Fastlane.

Rousey interrupted Stephanie McMahon, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair in the main event segment. She said she didn’t vacate the Raw Women’s Championship last week, she gave Stephanie a week to think about things and add Lynch to the match at WrestleMania. Rousey got her title back from Stephanie.

Rousey then cut a promo where she spoke out against the fans. She brought up that the crowd booed her out of the Staples Center and people chant for Lynch while Rousey’s working her ass off to entertain them. She then kicked Charlotte and put the armbar on Lynch three times, with Charlotte backing away instead of getting involved.

Lynch vs. Charlotte is set for Sunday’s pay-per-view. The stipulation is that — if Lynch defeats Charlotte — she’ll be added to the Raw Women’s title match at WrestleMania, officially making it Rousey vs. Lynch vs. Charlotte.

The Shield also reunited and will face Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre & Bobby Lashley at Fastlane, and Triple H responded to Batista after Batista returned and attacked Ric Flair last week.

AfD denies claims one of its MPs is ‘under Russian control’

The nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AfD) has been rocked by allegations that one of its MPs is a Russian intelligence asset.

Click Here: brisbane lions guernsey 2019

Markus Frohnmaier denied any links to the Kremlin on Friday after alleged Russian intelligence documents emerged which describe him as “under our absolute control”.

The BBC, Spiegel magazine and ZDF television in Germany, and Italy’s La Repubblica published what they claim is a Russian strategy paper from April 2017 detailing plans to influence policy and public opinion in the European Union.

The paper names Mr Frohnmaier as a candidate in German national elections later that year and recommends “material and media support” for his campaign.

If he is elected, it concludes: “We will have our own MP under our absolute control in the Bundestag”.

Mr Frohnmaier denied any knowledge of the strategy paper in a statement issued by his lawyers and said he could not explain why he was named in it.

He said he was “never under the control of any third party” and had “never  solicited financial or media support in Russian political, economic or civil circles”.

In a separate interview with the BBC he suggested the paper could be fake.

The AfD denied any of its MPs are foreign intelligence assets. “All claims to the contrary are false. We have a member sitting on the parliamentary intelligence oversight committee so we have full information on this,” a spokesman said.

The AfD became the first nationalist party to sit in the German parliament since the 1960s after making dramatic gains in 2017’s election campaigning on an anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim platform.

It has faced repeated questions over alleged links to Russia after trips to the country by senior party figures emerged, but the allegations against Mr Frohnmaier are the most serious yet.

The MP has been outspoken in his support for Russian positions over Crimea and other matters.

The media organisations who published the alleged Russian strategy paper say they obtained it from the London-based Dossier Centre, an organisation funded by Russian businessman and Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

They claim the paper was attached to an email to Vladimir Putin’s presidential office from Petr Premyak, a former naval counterintelligence officer and former member of the upper house of the Russian parliament.

The allegations come days after Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Brexiter MP, was accused of quoting the far-Right after he tweeted Brexit comments from the AfD’s parliamentary leader, Alice Weidel.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: WWE’s road to Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

Though the road getting here was as convoluted as possible, WWE has finally confirmed Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch for WrestleMania 35.

Storyline suspensions, injuries, and even an “arrest” for Lynch, the McMahons getting involved and Vince replacing Lynch with Charlotte, Charlotte fully turning heel and Rousey turning against the crowd, and dozens of tweets all led to Lynch facing Charlotte at Fastlane. The stipulation was that if Lynch won, the Raw Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania would officially become a triple threat.

Kim Jong-un gives Donald Trump until end of year to change attitude to North Korea nuclear talks

Kim Jong-un said the US must change its attitude to talks by the end of this year if there was to be a third summit with Donald Trump.

The North Korean leader made the comments during a speech on Friday at a session of North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament, which made a slew of personnel changes that bolstered his diplomatic lineup amid deadlocked negotiations with the United States.

His speech came hours after Mr Trump and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in Washington and agreed on the importance of nuclear talks with North Korea.

"We of course place importance on resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations. But US-style dialogue of unilaterally pushing its demands doesn’t fit us, and we have no interest in it," Kim said during the speech.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, he blamed the collapse of his summit with Trump in February on what he described as unilateral demands by the United States, which he said raised questions over whether Washington has genuine willingness to improve relations. But Kim said his personal relationship with the American president remains good and that they could exchange letters at "any time."

The United States has said the summit in Vietnam broke down because of the North’s excessive demands for sanctions relief in return for limited disarmament measures. In their first summit last June in Singapore, Mr Trump and Kim issued a vague statement calling for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing when and how it would occur.

Kim said the United States has been refusing to withdraw what the North perceives as "hostile policies" while sticking to "mistaken judgment that we would succumb to maximum pressure." He said the North would not compromise on the "fundamental interests of our country and people, even by a speck," and blamed the United States for arriving in Hanoi with "completely unrealisable plans."

"If the United States approaches us with the right manner and offers to hold a third North Korea-U.S. leaders’ summit on the condition of finding solutions we could mutually accept, then we do have a willingness to give it one more try," he added. "We will wait with patience until the end of the year for the United States to come up with a courageous decision. But it will clearly be difficult for a good opportunity like last time to come up."

Kim also during the speech made a nationalistic call for South Korea to support the North’s positions more strongly and criticised Seoul for acting like an "overstepping mediator" between Washington and Pyongyang. Kim held three summits last year with Moon, who lobbied hard to revive the nuclear talks between the United States and North Korea.

Following collapse of the Trump-Kim summit, the North had been urging the South to break away from Washington and proceed with inter-Korean economic projects that are currently held back by U.S.-led sanctions against the North.

"The South should not act as an ‘overstepping mediator’ or a ‘facilitator’ and should rather get its mind straight as a member of the (Korean) nation and boldly speak up for the interest of the nation," Kim said.

When asked about Kim’s comments, South Korea’s presidential office said Seoul is committed toward keeping the atmosphere of dialogue alive and helping negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang resume at an early date.

The ending of Super ShowDown brought a scary end to what was an embarrassing night for WWE.

Goldberg vs. The Undertaker reinforced the amount of risk that exists when you put two 50-year-old wrestlers against each other. The match was laid out exactly as it should have been and was on its way to being good, but things fell apart when Goldberg got knocked out.

Goldberg (who already had a mark on his forehead going into the match) got busted open when he went for a spear into the corner and rammed his head into the post less than three minutes in. From there, things only got worse.

Italy’s public broadcaster under fire for separate channels for men and women

Italian actors have joined women rights’ groups in revolt against the "sexist" state broadcaster after it announced it was closing a film channel and replacing it with separate channels targeted to women and men.

RAI said it planned to improve its offer by targeting its TV shows, films and series specifically to women and men through the different channels.

According to RAI Chief Executive Fabrizio Salini, the aim of the new plan is to reposition programs to better reach different audiences without reducing the film offer or limiting the channels’ audience. The new plan also includes the creation of a new channel in English and one focused on politics.

Mr Salini claimed that the programming changes were in line with a “more strategic and contemporary vision".

However, popular actors and women’s associations accused of being “sexist” and “incomprehensible”. The protest exploded on social media with the hashtag #nonchiudeteraimovie (Don’t close Rai Movie).

Alessandro Borghi, one of the most popular among Italy’s emerging actors, tweeted that RAI’s decision “didn’t make any sense” and urged the broadcaster to “use its head”.

His call was echoed by his colleague Alessandro Gassman – son of Vittorio Gassman, one of Italy’s most famous actors ever – who supported a petition on change.org asking RAI not to shut down Rai Movie.

Women activists also accused RAI, describing the proposal as “grotesque and even dangerous”.

Lella Palladino, the president of the Women against Violence Network, said the plans will end up reinforcing the prejudices that fuel discrimination between men and women in a macho society.

“This is a structural phenomenon of a society that is still struggling to overcome a patriarchal supremacy,” Palladino said.

6 children among 15 dead after gun battle between Sri Lankan military and Easter bombing suspects

The bodies of 15 people, including six children, were discovered at the site of a fierce overnight gun battle on the east coast of Sri Lanka, a military spokesman said on Saturday, six days after suicide bombers killed more than 250 people.

The shootout between troops and suspected Islamist militants erupted on Friday evening in Sainthamaruthu in Ampara, to the south of the town of Batticaloa, site of one of the Easter Sunday blasts at three churches and four luxury hotels.

A police spokesman said that three suspected suicide bombers were among the 15 dead after the shoot out.

Military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said in a statement that as troops headed towards the safe house three explosions were triggered and gunfire began.

"Troops retaliated and raided the safe house where a large cache of explosives had been stored," he said in a statement.

He said the militants were suspected members of the National Thowheed Jama’at (NTJ), which has been blamed for last Sunday’s attacks.

Mohamed Saleem, President of Jamiathul Ulema, a governing Muslim body, told the Telegraph: “The house had been rented out to two men from Kathankudy on the 16th of April.

"It was rented out by two men who claimed that they were planning to start a business in the area. Four days after they rented the place, more than two people started moving in. The landlord and the neighbours became suspicious when a larger crowd moved in and they started moving boxes in and out of the house in a van.

The landlord, mosque authorities and  local residents then complained to the police, according to Mr Saleem. On Friday, four mosque officials, the village leader and the landlord visited and demanded to search the house where the terrorists were staying.

The men initially refused saying there were women in the house, then pulled out a AK47 rifle and shot up in the air, trying to frighten them away. He then took stacks of money, all in 5,000 Rupee bundles, screaming at them to take it.

As they landlord and others ran for cover there was another explosion and the military arrived and there was a shootout.

Earlier, detectives had found explosives, drones and an Islamic State group banner and robes used in a propaganda video recorded before the bombers detonated in crowded hotels and restaurants. The bombers filmed themselves swearing allegiance to Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil) before they killed 253 Christians, hotels guests and staff.

The clashes on Friday came as the country remained on high alert and thousands of extra security forces had been drafted onto the streets.

Sri Lankan authorities also said the extremist preacher suspected of masterminding and leading the bombings died in the blast at the Shangri La hotel, where British victims died.

Mohamed Zahran, the leader of the local jihadi group National Thowheed Jamath, known for his incendiary speeches on social media, was one of the suicide bombers who carried out the attacks on three hotels and three churches, the police said on an official Twitter account.

Detectives had also arrested the group’s second-in-command and said the militants’ military training was provided by “Army Mohideen” and weapons training had taken place overseas and at some locations in Sri Lanka’s Eastern province.

Maithripala Sirisena, the president, said the group was driven by “religious fanaticism,” suggesting its leader had killed himself to “set an example” and gain more followers.

However, Chula Senaviratne, the national security chief, said there was “still ambiguity whether he is dead or not” while DNA tests are being carried out.

“There is strong likelihood that the decapitated head of the suicide bomber at Shangri La was the same person we identified in the photographs…” he added. “However, we cannot be absolutely certain.”

Sri Lankan officials have made claims and counterclaims in the chaotic aftermath of Sunday’s atrocities as security forces rush to detain suspects and the government reels from failures to act on warnings that bombings were imminent.

Security agencies are also trying to track down hauls of explosives, some of which may have been left over from Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil war.

President Sirisena told reporters in Colombo that some 140 people had been been identified as having links to the Islamic State group, although he reassured the public that the Sri Lankan government has “the capability to completely control ISIS activities”.

The government has apologised for its failure to act on precise and repeated alerts from India that named suspects planning to attack local churches. Sri Lanka’s Catholic leader said he felt “betrayed” by the failure to act on warnings that could have prevented the bloodshed. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, said he had asked for an explanation, but not received an answer.

As fears of retaliation or follow-up attacks continued, Muslims were asked to stay at home to pray rather than attend Friday prayers in mosques that could also be targeted by extremists.

The Sri Lankan authorities have confirmed that seven suicide bombers carried out the attacks, including Adbul Lathief Jameel Mohammed who studied engineering for a year in the UK. They said all the bombers came from a middle-class, educated background.

In new details that emerged on Friday, the police said that the attackers had worked out at a local gym and by playing soccer using their authentic national identity cards. They added that the vehicles used in the attack were purchased from a car dealership in Kadawatha, a suburb of the capital.

They said that the operator of a copper factory who was arrested in connection with the bombings had helped Mohideen make improvised explosive devices and purchase empty cartridges sold by the Sri Lankan military as scrap copper.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the prime minister, has said investigators are still working to determine the extent of the bombers’ foreign links.
