PWG Hand of Doom results: Trevor Lee says farewell

Image: SoCal Uncensored. Report submitted by Brian Reznick.

PWG’s first show of 2019 took place at the Globe Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Friday night.

Overall, it was a fun show. It wasn’t a total blowaway like the classic PWG shows, but it was a fun night and there were a few very strong matches. I saw empty seats in the back, but it was still packed. If they never got to a true sellout, they definitely got close.

The promotion did not announce their next date, but Excalibur said that they would be back soon.

– Brody King defeated Jungle Boy

Jungle Boy was making his PWG debut and got a great reception. The match had a decent enough big guy vs. little guy dynamic. This was my second time seeing Jungle Boy live. i see the potential, but he’s still pretty green. A few of his arm drags were a little rough, and he and King had some awkward transitions. Most people are better by the time they debut in PWG, but the crowd seemed into the match.

King chopped the hell out of Jungle Boy throughout, leaving him with a very marked up chest. There were strong “please come back” chants for Jungle Boy after the loss.

– Puma King defeated DJZ

This result surprised me and made me wonder how long DJZ will be a free agent. The fan appreciation of this match is determined by how much one responds to the Puma King gimmick. I really like it, so I enjoyed the match. But I have friends who don’t like it and didn’t think much of it.

They did a bunch of cool reversals, arm drags, and pinning predicaments. It was a perfectly fine second match on a wrestling card.

– LAX (Santana & Ortiz) defeated Laredo Kid & Rey Horus

They had a great, all-action tag match. The crowd loves LAX, and rightly so. Horus looked great, but he always does. Laredo Kid received a warm welcome and had some cool spots during the match.

Horus did his insane running dive from the ring over the corner post to the outside, cheating it slightly by going a little diagonal. There was a healthy “please come back” for Laredo Kid afterwards.

– Robbie Eagles defeated Jonathan Gresham

Great response for Gresham here. It was a really strong debut for him as all of his stuff looked great and he was over with the crowd. Eagles is just a guy. The crowd liked him more than me, but not a lot more.

Gresham worked the right arm the whole match, including chopping it, rather than the chest, during striking exchanges. Eagles won with his 450 onto the leg followed by his figure four variant. He didn’t even set up the leg submission throughout the match.

There was a very strong post-match “please come back” for Gresham, noticeably stronger than Jungle Boy or Laredo Kid.

– PWG Tag Team Champions The Rascalz (Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz) defeated Best Friends (Beretta & Chuck Taylor) to retain their titles

I really enjoyed the build up during this match. It had plenty of offense, but it was less of a spot fest and had a better story than other Rascalz PWG matches (though I love the Rascalz firefight and a million high spots matches as well)

The story of the match was Best Friends working their heavyweight advantages on the smaller Rascalz. The Rascalz outran Best Friends right away, but the match turned early when Taylor told Beretta to stop acting like a junior and do heavyweight stuff. Beretta got Xavier to do the running shoulder tackle spot, and then floored him.

There was another good story moment with a fun payoff later: Xavier was demolished in a chopping exchange with Beretta. Xavier switched tactics to quicker-paced offense and gained the upper hand. But after a series of tags in and out with Wentz, Beretta made a comeback by flooring Xavier with a hard chop.

The match built to some high flying and dives to the outside by the Rascalz, but the dives felt like they meant more. The Rascalz won with the Hot Fire Flame (assisted standing Shooting Star Press), with Xavier pushing Wentz mid-Shooting Star over a bent over Taylor and onto a recently laid out Beretta. The crowd loved the match and all four guys

– Bandido defeated ACH

This was my favorite match. Bandido is great and ACH is one of the most underrated guys in the business — he can really do everything. He worked heel here and did a great job as a cocky bastard. He worked the fans when he was in the crowd. He was smarmy and cocky, and he found moments to build chants for Bandido without making it obvious that he was doing it.

Here’s my favorite part: ACH did the chopping the outside ring post by mistake spot (after really working some vocal Bandido fans into a rage) and then sold the hand for the rest of the match. No one does that. Not even WALTER, who is good about that kind of thing. And ACH didn’t overdo it or make the entire match about his hand. He just made sure to sell that it was hard to grip when attempting a German suplex — or he became reluctant to have another chopping exchange.

There were a bunch of other great heel touches, and Bandido was great as always. He won with his handspring German suplex.

– PWG World Champion Jeff Cobb defeated Trevor Lee to retain his title

This match had a lot of trouble getting off the ground, but eventually built to a great peak and finish. The energy was very weird early.

Lee came out and started to do his typical heel promo. Right away, he noted that Cobb wouldn’t get him like he got him last time (Cobb pinned Lee in about 10 seconds in round two of BOLA 2018 by grabbing Lee during his promo) — only to have Cobb grab him and suplex him. But Lee escaped and got a small package for a two count. A lot of people, myself included, thought the flash pin could happen. However, after this moment, the match went flat for awhile.

The crowd did not boo Lee at all, which they normally would. I think this was because everyone knew this was Lee’s last PWG match, so they didn’t want to boo. But Lee also didn’t work heel. He conveyed that he earnestly wanted the title and was working hard to win. So, the crowd didn’t really know how to react.

Lee worked his ass off, doing a tope to one side and later a tope suicida to the other. Even with the dives, the crowd would die down quickly. However, the match really took off for the final 5-10 minutes. They worked a spot where Lee accidentally punted Justin the referee (the biggest heel in PWG), and the crowd came to life for that.

Lee then worked heel by hitting a low blow, but now the crowd was mainly pulling for him. He hit a running flip dive from the ring over the corner post to the outside. He hit his big standing double stomp for a near fall. Cobb came back with deadlift gutwrench suplexes and a bridging
German for two.

Cobb hit a release airplane spin, flinging Lee high into the air for a near fall. Lee escaped a top rope superplex attempt by rolling over into a powerbomb set up, carrying Cobb a few feet from the corner, and hitting a sit-out power bomb. That was another two count.

Everyone was on their feet for the final few minutes. The finish came when Cobb hit the Tour of the Islands, but Lee kicked out at one. The crowd lost it. Cobb hit a huge German (landing Lee on his face) and then another Tour of the Islands for the three count.

After the match, Lee cut a great, heartfelt promo. He said that he never thought he would main event in PWG when he debuted in 2014, calling it a company that he had dreamed about working for. He thanked the fans for tweeting after that debut to get him booked again. He said he read every message they sent to PWG and made sure that he worked his ass off to deliver for them.

Lee said that PWG helped make it so he could quit his job “selling frozen yogurt to sh*tty kids” and wrestle full time. And he said that he never won BOLA or the PWG title as he said he would, but the fans made it so he could get hired by WWE. Lee finished by saying he’d probably just get fired by WWE and come back and win the PWG title

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. At least not for me — I hope he makes a billion dollars.

UFC Hvt. fighter “Big Country” Roy Nelson revealed Tuesday that he would consider crossing over to WWE, pending a conversation with UFC president Dana White.

“I would love to go to WWE,” Nelson told the MMA media during an Open Workout promoting his next UFC fight Thursday night in Las Vegas.

“But, I think in our contracts we’re not allowed to do that. There are some people who get that little extra leeway. But, now I think everyone is kind of going that way, I might as well try it,” Nelson continued.

“I’ll talk to Dana and say, ‘Hey, can we do this?’”

Big Country faces Derrick Lewis in a Hvt. division fight at the “UFC Fight Night” card Thursday night, kicking off three straight events in Las Vegas this weekend.

The weekend culminates with Brock Lesnar returning to UFC to fight Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on Saturday night. Roy Nelson also commented on the Lesnar-Hunt in his media interview.

IC title match, Strowman vs. Corbin set for WWE Elimination Chamber

Ahead of tonight’s go-home edition of Raw, WWE has added two more matches to the card for Elimination Chamber.

WWE has announced that Finn Balor will challenge for Bobby Lashley’s Intercontinental Championship in a handicap match at the pay-per-view. Balor will face both Lashley & Lio Rush, with the stipulation being that Balor can win the title by pinning or submitting either of them.

Balor and Lashley’s feud began when Lashley interrupted Balor and laid him out on the post-Royal Rumble episode of Raw. Balor defeated Rush last week after Lashley cut a pre-match promo saying Balor doesn’t deserve to be in the ring with him.

Lashley said Balor needs to fight people his own size, that he’d think about giving Balor a title shot if he entertains him enough, and then attacked Balor before the bell.

Braun Strowman vs. Baron Corbin has also been announced for Elimination Chamber, which is taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on Sunday.

Corbin & Drew McIntyre defeated Strowman & Kurt Angle by DQ in the main event of last week’s Raw, but Strowman & Angle stood tall to close the show. Strowman slammed Corbin and McIntyre on the steel steps after the match.

WWE Studios’s “Marine 5” movie shoot was reported to the oversight body for a workplace incident last month in Canada.

According to a report released by WorkSafeBC to the Vancouver Sun, there was an incident involving suspected carbon monoxide poisoning on June 10.

One worker fell unconscious on the movie set and two others were hospitalized for “ill health effects.”

The incident occurred during a shoot involving a fog machine, two motorcycles, and a 1980s American-made pick-up truck, which had engine problems.

The production team was filming an action scene underground and the area’s ventilation system was “kept off for significant durations to maintain the foggy conditions and minimize noise during the film shoot.”

Also, the ventilation system had last been serviced in August 2012, and was overdue for service in August 2013.

It’s unclear if penalties will be assessed for the apparent workplace violation.

“Marine 5” stars The Miz, along with his wife Maryse, and several other WWE stars. The movie was filmed in British Columbia, Canada over a period of a month.

Sasha Banks captured the WWE Women’s Title from Charlotte on Monday’s Raw kicking off a “new era” for the Raw brand.

Sasha submitted Charlotte to the Bank Statement to conclude a 17-minute match placed in the top-of-the-third-hour timeslot.

Sasha was given post-match interview time to hype her role re-introducing “Women’s Wrestling” on WWE TV.

Overall, Sasha ended Charlotte’s near-full-year title reign dating back to winning the Divas Title at the Night of Champions PPV in September. Charlotte then won the newly-introduced Women’s Title at WrestleMania, holding it until Monday’s Raw.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: WWE takes first steps toward WrestleMania 35 triple threat

It appears that WWE has officially taken the first steps towards Ronda Rousey, Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair all being involved in the main event of WrestleMania 35.

An angle where Vince McMahon suspended Lynch for 60 days and announced that Charlotte would be taking her place at WrestleMania closed last Monday’s episode of Raw. Charlotte aligned with Vince and fully turned heel, with Vince calling her someone with charisma, someone with charm, and someone who knows their lane and stays in it.

WON NEWSLETTER: February 25, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Elimination Chamber review

The show didn’t sell out, even in one of WWE’s best markets. The show had more good than bad, with the highlight being the main event, the men’s Chamber match where Daniel Bryan retained and the crowd got so strong behind Kofi Kingston in the Mustafa Ali slot that Vince McMahon changed plans for Fast Lane to put Bryan vs. Kingston on top.

The show was the brainchild of Motoko Baba, to run a big Baba celebration show in 2019, 20 years after his early 1999 death. With her passing away last year, it was her nieces and nephews who put the show together.

All but one count of Mark Hunt’s lawsuit against the UFC, Dana White and Brock Lesnar on the grounds they conspired against him to allow a juiced up Lesnar to fight him at UFC 200 was thrown out of court.

The 2020 Royal Rumble will take place on 1/26 at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Most likely that would also mean Takeover on 1/25 at the Toyota Center, Raw on 1/27 and Smackdown on 1/28.

FOX this weekend started advertising 10/4 as the debut of the new Friday Night Smackdown show.

“Fighting with My Family,” the Dwayne Johnson Seven Bucks Entertainment movie about Growing Up as Paige, which has its big national release on 2/22, has gotten great word-of-mouth so far.

Chris Jericho noted that while he and Gedo are on the same page, that New Japan management hasn’t talked with him about a new deal.

UFC/MMA
At his retirement press conference today, Georges St-Pierre spoke about why a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov didn’t happen: “My agent was talking to the UFC, we tried to organize the fight with Khabib. I know Khabib wants it and I want it, but the UFC had other plans. To the point where I am in my career, for me it’s more at this time taking one fight at a time instead of being there for several fights. The way the business works in UFC, if they promote someone they want to keep him there to have a guarantee that the guy is there. It’s like an investment.”
Nurmagomedov wrote on Instagram: “Now look at this video and you’ll understand why I wanted to fight with him, simply he’s one of the best оf all times. I just wanted to share cage with him while he’s active, that’s the history and people be watching it again and again, I want to fight with the best. -WWE Network was ranked in a study by Park Associates, as reported by the Streaming Observer, as the fifth biggest streaming network in the United States. Number one is Netflix, followed by Amazon Prime, Hulu, and MLB.com. After WWE Network comes Sling TV, HBO Now, Crunchyroll, Showtime, and CBS All Access. The article noted WWE Network experienced “continued strong growth from the year prior” in their assessment. Nearly two thirds of U.S. homes with broadcast subscribe to a streaming video service (63 percent compared to 57 percent at the start of 2015). TV has overtaken computers in the last two years as the top source of streaming content. Says the article: “Streaming TV isn’t just becoming an alternative to a cable subscription, but it’s actually replacing it on a large scale now.” (SOURCE LINK)

-Smackdown on Tuesday night drew a 1.56 rating, down from the 1.71 and 1.72 ratings the previous two weeks, and barely above the 1.58 rating three weeks ago when it went up against the Vice Presidential Debate. It seems pretty clear from the demographics that the NBA season opening with the Lebron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers vs. The New York Knicks and the first game of the World Series pulled viewers away from Smackdown, as the adult 18-49 demo was down from 0.81 to 0.69, but isolating the male 18-49 demo, it was down from 0.96 to 0.61. So the drop-off in general was sharp, but much sharper among the male demo.

-WWE announced today that WrestleMania 33 tickets go on sale Nov. 18, although travel packages including WM tickets go on sale Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. ET. Price ranges are $38 to $2,130. The most expensive tickets are Gold Circle packages which includes a seat in the first ten rows.
