F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: WWE’s women’s division balancing act

Ahead of the company’s second-ever women’s Royal Rumble match and potentially the first women’s WrestleMania main event in history, a couple of segments have called the presentation of WWE’s women’s division into question. WWE’s promise of change appears to include taking the on-screen product in a slightly more risqué direction. On back-to-back nights, that was evidenced by angles involving Alexa Bliss and Mandy Rose.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
With Heavy Machinery debuting on the main roster, Shane Thorne is replacing Otis Dozovic in the Worlds Collide tournament that’s taking place at Royal Rumble Axxess. The tournament features wrestlers from NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live, with the winner getting a title shot on any of those brands. Worlds Collide is being taped for a WWE Network special, though further details on that have yet to be revealed.
NXT UK TV tapings had already been announced for Royal Rumble Axxess, and it was noted this week that the tapings will be for three episodes.
Brie Bella spoke to Digital Spy about the reaction she received after accidentally injuring Liv Morgan. She was asked if it was important to have Total Bellas as an outlet to tell her story: “Yes, it definitely is, because first off it’s crazy how I’ve been wrestling for 12 years and one of my major mistakes in the ring I get judged so harshly on. We’re not perfect, no one’s perfect, you know how many people have been injured in the ring? But for some reason I was like showcased in such a way of like, this evil person, and ‘look what she’s done’ and I got bullied really bad. I wanted to run into a cave and you’ll see. I don’t think people have ever seen me break down as bad as they will during the whole Liv situation. I went into deep depression. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to go back to work. All the horrible things people were saying about me, I felt a thousand times worse than the things they thought of me and I really had to sit down and think to myself, ‘Brie, you’re a mother’ and if Birdie was in this situation would you want her to feel this bad or would you want her to stand up to it and be like ‘Screw you guys?’ I made a mistake and she’s not badly injured and you know what, this is our business, this is what we all signed up for. Everyone’s going to see backstage even how Liv and I were with each other. Out in the WWE ring, we have to play so much, bad guy, good guy, don’t talk to your competitors, but backstage you’ll see that we’re all really close and it affects us. We never want to go out there and hurt each other so when it happens it’s emotional. But people are going to hear my side of the story and my voice and how it’s about damn time that trolls stopped going on the internet and bullying everyone.”
Sunday’s episode of Total Bellas averaged 460,000 viewers, which is down from 505,000 viewers for the season premiere and is the lowest number in series history. The rating in the 18-49 demo this week was a 0.20.
Matt Hardy praised Rey Mysterio after Mysterio’s two-out-of-three falls match against Andrade on last night’s SmackDown: “How can anyone not love & respect @reymysterio? For a guy who has put his body through SO damn much for nearly 30 years, his skills as an athletic performer are positively MIND-BLOWING. What a LEGEND. #SDLive”

Iraq to take back 20,000 who left for Isil’s caliphate in Syria

Iraq has agreed to take back up to 20,000 of its nationals who were captured leaving Isil areas in Syria, as local authorities warn they are struggling with the burden of foreign jihadists.

The number includes women and children as well as a small number of fighters, according to officials from the Red Cross.

Most are being held in al-Hol camp in Kurdish-held northern Syria, where authorities are scrabbling to accommodate the 65,000 who recently fled Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s final stronghold of Baghuz.

More than 100 people have died in the camps, or on their way to it, including the three-week old son of 19-year-old runaway schoolgirl from Bethnal Green Shamima Begum.

Sam Tarling for The Telegraph

"Among the people who reached al-Hol camp you have a significant number of people who are of Iraqi origin. Figures are not official but probably we are talking about 20,000, including women and children," Fabrizio Carboni, ICRC regional director for the Middle East, told Reuters.

"The Iraqi government has expressed its will to bring those people back, but it’s obviously a challenging situation. Those people are considered as a security threat, so it means that they will have to go through a screening process," he added.

There was no official date to his knowledge for the huge transfer, Mr Carboni said: "But according to our understanding, it’s a matter of weeks or months.”

Western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are holding more than 4,000 non-Iraqi foreign men and women with links to Isil, as well as their children.

The SDF has warned it does not have the resources to hold them for much longer and has encouraged allies to take responsibility.

Britain and most other European countries have so far refused to repatriate their citizens, saying they pose a security risk.

Iraq has shown little leniency to Isil suspects at trial.

The Telegraph has attended hearings both in Baghdad and Mosul, where hundreds of detainees have been handed lengthy sentences and in some cases even the death penalty.

Some of the foreign women were given 20-year sentences simply for following their husbands to the so-called caliphate.

Baghdad’s investigative court is currently hearing the cases of 14 French male suspects who were handed over by to Iraqi authorities by the SDF.

A report released last week by Human Rights Watch also revealed that Iraq was holding more than 1,500 children in prisons on suspicion of links to Isil. More than 150 have been charged, often based on confessions obtained through torture, the group said.

The battle for Baghuz, meanwhile, looks set to continue for days more as the SDF makes incremental advances between long pauses to allow women and children to leave the pocket and men to lay down their arms.

“We could take it in one night. But the strategy is to press Isil to let their civilians out, not to storm the place,” said Behzat Cudi, unit commander. “So we attack and give them a chance to surrender.”

SDF troops launched a fighting reconnaissance raid into the pocket on Sunday night and advanced to take and hold the same ground overnight on Tuesday.

Fighting is now taking place at close quarters among tents and fox holes often occupied by women and children as well as Isil fighters and suicide bombers. The commander said it is often impossible to use the coalition air support that has given the SDF the decisive advantage in previous battles.

One commander told the Telegraph last week that the remaining area could conceal 2,000 Isil fighters and more civilians, though with a reported 2,000 mostly fighters surrendering on Tuesday it was unclear just how many were left.

The SDF and coalition have throughout the battle for Baghouz grossly underestimated the number left in the pocket.

WWE announces 13 entrants for WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal

Viktor Orban covers up controversial Juncker posters in last minute bid to retain EPP membership

Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, faces calls to distance himself from an anti-immigration campaign or see his Fidesz party thrown out of the European Union’s most powerful political grouping on Wednesday.

The European People’s Party (EPP), a bloc of conservative parties from across the EU, is set to meet in Brussels this on Wednesday evening to decide whether to expel Fidesz over campaign posters that attacked Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission.

Manfred Weber, the German favourite to succeed Mr Juncker, flew into Budapest last week in a bid to shore up an increasingly strained political alliance with Mr Orban.

As Mr Weber drove into the city, the campaign…

Isil branches out into Pakistan as it bids to rebuild collapsed caliphate

The Islamic State group has disclosed the creation of a new regional chapter in Pakistan, as the group tries to rebrand and rebuild after the destruction of its caliphate.

The organisational reshuffle came five days after the announcement of a similar new outfit in India.

Pakistani operations had until this week been attributed to the group’s Khorasan Province which encompassed Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of central Asia.

Statements claiming the killing of a Pakistani policeman and a rival Taliban member in separate attacks in Balochistan earlier this week were instead attributed to a new Pakistan Province.

The group has been restructuring its regional operations since last summer, said Tore Hamming, a jihadist specialist at the European University Institute. New regional groups have been also been founded in Turkey, Central Africa and Greater Sahara, he said.

The remnants of the Islamic State caliphate in Baghouz, Syria, in March

However, the new names are “nothing more than a rebranding strategy to counter its demise”, he said.

“I simply see it as a calculated strategy to appear as successful and as an expanding force in the midst of all its territorial loss.”

Setting up more branches was an attempt to boost its credentials in those regions and attract new recruits as well as defections from other militant groups, analysts also believe.

Islamic State group first emerged in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2015 at the height of the extremists self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria. Members of the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban as well as other militant groups defected to swear allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

While the group has taken responsibility for a string of bombings in Pakistan, the country’s security forces claim it has no organised presence. Across the border in Afghanistan, it has established a stubborn grip in parts of Kunar and Nangarhar, but has lost territory to the Taliban.

Corey Graves Comments About Training Under Bill DeMott

WWE Play-by-Play Commentator Corey Graves has been recently active on Twitter, responding to users about his former WWE Coach, Bill DeMott. DeMott was ousted from The WWE in 2015 due to allegations of misconduct during his time as a trainer in the company’s developmental territories Deep South Wrestling, Florida Championship Wrestling & NXT.
One of Graves’ initial tweets reads, “I’m not really old enough to claim ‘back in my day,’ but what I remember as ‘coaching’ or ‘motivation’ is now considered ‘bullying.’ I turned out just fine. And my kids are probably tougher than yours. Can you please pass the blue crayon for these adult coloring books?”
An individual responded to Graves, writing, “In a company that once had Bill DeMott as a head trainer who seemed to think pretty highly of his motivation skills, perhaps this isn’t the best hill to die on? That twitter break you were gonna do might have done some good, man.”

Graves would then reply in two parts, stating, “I still stand by Bill DeMott. We weren’t always best friends, but there was no malice whatsoever. It wasn’t until people started complaining that getting PAID TO TRAIN was too hard for them, that it became an issue. What’s the point you’re trying to argue? He was my head coach. I did what he said. I personally believe I ended up better for it. Still trying to figure out why you’re mad at a guy you’ve never met…”

Below is a video of Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose talking to Kayla Braxton after last Tuesday night’s episode of SmackDown LIVE. Braxton asks about the disadvantage of starting Sunday’s Elimination Chamber Match first with the team of Sasha Banks & Bayley.

Deville responded, “Disadvantage? We’re going to be the first ones in and the last ones out. That’s what champions do and come Sunday, we will be the champions.”

Deville & Rose also commented on Sasha Banks re-injuring her shoulder on RAW, calling it “amazing” because that is just one less person they will have to worry about as they look to capture The WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles.

North Carolina re-enters Top 25; Penn State, Ohio State still ranked 1-2 heading into Holiday tournaments

Manheim, Pennsylvania — The nation’s top five teams have combined to go 34-0 in the first month and a half of the college wrestling season as the final USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll was released on Wednesday for the 2017 calendar year.

Penn State (5-0) remains No. 1, while Ohio State (6-0), Oklahoma State (5-0) and Missouri (8-0) maintained their positions over the past week. NC State (10-0) moved up to No. 5, jumping one spot over Lehigh (6-1). The rest of the top ten was unchanged as the Big Ten took three of the four spots at 7-10 with Iowa, Minnesota, and Michigan staying put as did No. 10 Virginia Tech from the ACC.

Penn State beat Indiana 44-3 to open up its Big Ten schedule, while Ohio State dropped one individual bout in two neutral-site victories. The Buckeyes shut out Princeton prior to the Beast of the East in Newark, Delaware on Friday and then beat Chattanooga 39-3 at The Cooler in suburban Atlanta.

Oklahoma State got a scare on Tuesday night, splitting 10 matches with unranked Wyoming in a battle of Cowboys. The Stillwater-branded Cowboys won the dual 20-15 in a dual that saw two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil have his 55-match win streak snapped by Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith. A day earlier, Oklahoma State topped Northern Colorado 37-4.

NC State won nine out of 10 in Lincoln to beat then-No. 12 Nebraska 29-3. Things got worse for the Huskers as another ACC school came in and stole a victory. North Carolina (2-3) topped the Huskers 22-14 and re-entered the Top 25 at No. 24 this week. The Tar Heels did fall to then-No. 15 Northern Iowa 17-16 on criteria two days later. Nebraska slid six spots to No. 18.

The only other matchup between ranked teams saw No. 23 Central Michigan score a modest 24-10 upset over No. 19 Purdue on Monday. Central Michigan also picked up wins over Northern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.

Other ranked teams earning wins last week were: Cornell topping Buffalo 31-6, Oklahoma edging Appalachian State 19-13 and the aforementioned Northern Iowa win over North Carolina. Lock Haven beat Bloomsburg and non-Division I schools Wheeling Jesuit and Messiah to improve to 4-0. North Carolina’s return meant Navy was forced out of the Top 25 one week after making its first appearance since 2008.

Of note, South Dakota State (4-2) is ranked 15th this week, the highest in program history at the Division I level. The Jackrabbits had been ranked as high as 16th on five different occasions, all coming since February 2017.

The next poll will be a Wednesday release on January 3, 2018.

The USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is comprised of two voting coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Points are 25 for each first-place vote, 24 for second, 23 for third all the way to a 25th-place vote is one point.
