Matt Cappotelli passes away after second battle with brain cancer

Matt Cappotelli has passed away after his second battle with brain cancer.

Cappotelli’s wife, Lindsay, wrote on Facebook: “Hey Team Capp…I’ve been struggling with what to say and how to say this, and I’ll probably end up rambling, but here goes. Today my love-my strong, sweet, beautiful love-took his last breath at 3:30 a.m. and went Home to be with Jesus…exactly one year after his brain surgery. You think you can be prepared for this when you know it’s coming, but you just can’t. The only person who’s comfort I want right now is the one who can’t give it to me. I miss him so much. I know where he is now is so much better, but it doesn’t change how much I miss him.”

Cappotelli was 38 years old.

Last June, Cappotelli underwent surgery after being diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma brain tumor. Ninety percent of the tumor was able to be removed, but the remaining portion was too close to his brain stem. Lindsay wrote last month that they met with Cappotelli’s neuro-oncologist and it was decided that he was at the point where they should discontinue treatments.

Cappotelli, who appeared to be universally well-liked by those who knew him, was one of the winners of season three of WWE Tough Enough. He was an up-and-coming star in OVW until his first brain cancer diagnosis in 2005 led to the end of his in-ring career.

John Hennigan (John Morrison), the other winner of Tough Enough season three, posted about Cappotelli’s passing: “My first best friend in the wrestling business and to this day one of the best people I’ve ever known Matt Cappotelli has passed on. I’m gutted about this news. Matt inspired everyone around him especially me early in my career. He is loved and will be missed.”

Richard Gere special guest at Russian business conference where women are given as prizes

Richard Gere made an unlikely appearance at a star-studded business forum in Moscow, which he described as a "city of light".

The event, on Monday, caused controversy after twin female business assistants were offered as a contest prize.

Organisers from the Synergy business school told The Telegraph that “there should not be any information about Richard Gere” in its coverage because of a condition in his contract allowing them to “invite only Russian press”.

Gere, 69, known for roles in films including Pretty Woman, was perhaps an unusual booking as the headline speaker at the Synergy Global Forum, which also featured MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, author Malcolm Gladwell, actor Steven Seagal and the human-like robot Sophia.

Tickets ranged from £175 to more than £5,000 for VIP access.

The Hollywood leading man told the crowd at Moscow’s Olympic stadium largely about his acting career and Buddhist beliefs.

He called on Vladimir Putin to bring the Dalai Lama, who addressed last year’s Synergy forum by video, to Russia.

At the forum, Gere also said Moscow, which was “dark and repressive” when he first visited in 1989, was now a “city of light” that “feels like it’s a part of Europe”. But Russians should remember that “we’re all in the same boat,” rather than try to be the strongest or most important, he added.

Organisers said they did not know how much Mr Gere had been paid, but past honorariums have been hefty.

Synergy gave American motivational speaker Tony Robbins $1 million (£785,000) to talk to a sold-out crowd of 26,000 people at Olympic stadium in September, the school’s director has previously said.

Organisers denied that Gere was trying to keep his Moscow appearance out of English-language headlines.

“If you take any big star, they almost all have this, it’s about raising media interest in this person in each individual country,” one said. “They want there to be an interest for him to come speak in person in other countries.”

Representatives for Gere did not immediately reply to requests for comment. This year’s forum also awarded prizes in a year-long “business marathon”.

While the top-scoring entrepreneur was to receive a Moscow flat and the runner-up a Lexus automobile, third place was advertised as “twin business assistants for a year” with a photograph of two blondes in red blazers and low-cut tops.

Announcing the awards on Tuesday, Grigory Avetov, the Synergy director, complained that he had been unfairly accused of chauvinism over the twin assistants.

Instead, the third-place winner would get to make a business presentation at Olympic stadium, he said. He later claimed that the twins were “included as a prize more as a joke”.

“There can only be sexism against men, our rights are being violated, because [women] are more beautiful, dress better, you’re better in all parametres,” he told BBC Russian service.

Founded in 1988, the Synergy business school has become the largest private institution of higher learning in Russia and claims that its annual forum is the “biggest business event in the world”.

British billionaire Richard Branson, boxer Mike Tyson and filmmaker Oliver Stone are among the Western celebrities who have appeared.

Racing Point adamant Renault protest is ‘misconceived’

Racing Point has responded to Renault’s protest of its controversial RP20, calling the French outfit’s complaints “misconceived and poorly informed”.

Renault lodged an official protest with the Styrian Grand Prix stewards after Sunday’s race, targeting specific components of Racing Point’s 2020 car which, Renault argues, are just too similar to identical parts on last year’s championship winning Mercedes W10.

Renault’s protest centers around the front and rear brake ducts of the RP20 which appear as identical to those featured on the 2019 Mercedes, and yet, as listed parts as specified by the FIA’s regulations, the elements are required to be designed and manufactured by the competitor, or Racing Point in this case.

“BWT Racing Point F1 Team is extremely disappointed to see its results in the Styrian Grand Prix questioned by what it considers to be a misconceived and poorly informed protest,” a Racing Point statement read.

“Any and all suggestion of wrongdoing is firmly rejected and the team will take all steps necessary to ensure the correct application of the regulations to the facts.

“Prior to the start of the season, the team co-operated fully with the FIA and satisfactorily addressed all questions regarding the origins of the design of the RP20.

“The team is confident that the protest will be dismissed once it has presented its response.”

Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll finished respectively P6 and P7 in the Styrian Grand Prix, with the Mexican charging impressively through the field after starting 17th.

Earlier this year, Renault F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul equated Racing Point’s RP20 to a “forged piece of artwork”.

Historically, there’s a dose of bad blood between the two midfields teams that was sparked when Racing successfully protested at the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix Renault’s pre-set automated brake bias system, a complaint that led to the disqualification from the race of the Enstone cars.

Dior Men collaborates with Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo

For spring/summer 2021, Dior Men’s Kim Jones has created a collection
aimed as a “celebration of identity, of power of creativity” as he pays
homage to Ghanaian-born artist Amoako Boafo.

The collaboration came about after a meeting at the Rubell Museum in
Miami, where Jones describes it as “artistic love at first sight” in the
show notes, which has led to an “intimate, all-encompassing and honest
cultural conversation” since 2019, and is at the heart of the Dior Men’s
spring/summer 2021 collection.

Entitled ‘Portrait of an Artist’, the collection features a cornucopia
of stripes, florals and neons, with the colours drawn from the vivid,
near-surreal hues of Amoako Boafo’s artworks, while the graphic patterns,
jacquard of paintbrush strokes, are based on a photograph taken by Jones of
a textured canvas at the artist’s studio.

The creative starting point for the collection was Boafo’s painting
‘Green Beret’, showing a man wearing a shirt covered in an ivy leaf print,
with dark green pants and a matching beret. This print, Jones said reminded
him of an ivy-covered dress designed by Christian Dior in 1950. This was
interpreted into a retro-style knitted shirt, layered with a pale yellow
ribbed-knit turtleneck, shorts styled with a tuxedo belt, lace-up boots,
and of course, a beret.

Boafo’s artwork inspires throughout, right down to the layering of the
garments, through colour, cuts, proportions, and styling, which Jones
explains have been “artfully manipulate by the Black gaze of Amoako’s
paintings” through three-dimensionality, with fabrications that have been
printed and layered, ribbed knits incorporating jacquard patterns, and
embroideries on knitwear to showcase the appearance of a printed canvas.

This expression of Boafo’s artwork by Jones, turning his portraits into
fashion, is a masterclass on haute couture techniques used for a
ready-to-wear menswear collection, while still sporting streamline and
sportswear-influenced silhouettes and tailoring with couture
characteristics of the French luxury fashion house.

Dior Men showcases SS21 during Paris Menswear Digital Week

Each piece of the collaboration is described by the brand as a
“dialogue”, allowing Jones, who grew up in African countries including
Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana, to share his love for the
continent as well as express his influences and the cultures that he has
experienced in his lifetime.

The Dior Men show notes add: “Kim doesn’t hide his hand, which guides
this collection purposely, because the hand is Africa, and through that,
education is gained, a story is told and a painter and his subjects are
celebrated in the context of a Dior collection.”

While this collection would have made a statement on the catwalk, its
digital presentation which included a film and e-lookbook, allowed Dior Men
to share the African contemporary artist, his life, portraits, inspirations
and technique, as well as the symbiotic creative relationship between the
two.

In the film, Jones expresses: “I really, really, really love his work.
I’d wanted to work with an African artist for a long time because I grew up
in Africa and African art has always been important to me.

“The styling of the collection is really looking at his paintings and
seeing the characters he created and what he was painting in reality and
then bringing it back to life in a different way.”

NCAA releases first wrestling coaches’ panel rankings

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA released Thursday the first of four coaches’ panel rankings for the 2015-16 wrestling season. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year’s event is March 17-19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. For more information and to purchase tickets for the championship, visit NCAA.com/Wrestling.

Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.

Among the top-ranked wrestlers are five former national champions with Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State (125 pounds), Isaiah Martinez of Illinois (157), Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State (165), Gabriel Dean of Cornell (184) and Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State (heavyweight).

The additional top-ranked wrestlers at each weight class in the inaugural rankings are: Nahshon Garrett, Cornell (133 pounds); Dean Heil, Oklahoma State (141); Zain Retherford, Penn State (149); Bo Nickal, Penn State (174) and Morgan McIntosh, Penn State (197).

They’re the Bothun brothers. And the family is now wrestling royalty in the state of Minnesota.

Minnesota earns pair of wins on the road

The Gophers won both meets by a total of three points over the weekend.

The outcome of a dual came down to the final match twice for the Gophers over the weekend.

On Friday, No. 9 Michael Kroells picked up a major decision to give Minnesota a 22-20 victory over Northwestern. No. 7 Tommy Thorn won at 141 pounds to push the team past Wisconsin 17-16 on Sunday.

“I think the guys are wrestling with more intensity,” head coach J Robinson said Friday. “We talked a little bit about getting out there and getting in a fight. I think some of our guys wrestled harder today, and when they do that, good things happen.” Continue reading at www.mndaily.com

Vince McMahon Reveals XFL Launch Date, Cities & Venues Announced

As seen in the video below, XFL Officials hosted a press conference earlier today at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The press conference was opened by New Jersey Governor Phillip Murphy. He thanked Vince McMahon, WWE’s John Saboor, XFL Commissioner & CEO Oliver Luck and the entire XFL team. Murphy said that Jersey is thrilled to welcome them. He also commented on today being a national day of mourning for President Bush 41, then pointed out various elected officials in the audience. Murphy touted how MetLife has hosted Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce, The NFL’s Super Bowl, among others. MetLife is currently home to two other professional football teams but they have room for a third and Jersey couldn’t be happier to be one of the host sites for the 2020 revival season. Murphy said that it’s not just what happens on the field that matters, it’s the jobs, the economic impact of thousands of fans coming to the area. Murphy also said that the return of The XFL will be a welcome addition to many families across the region that rely on the stadium to stay strong.

Murphy added that The WWE brand has been a marquee name in American households for decades, one that has touched fans across generations and the world. Murphy thinks that The XFL has everything they need right here in this region. MetLife and The Meadowlands will be ready when The XFL kicks off. Murphy then introduces “the one, the only, the singular” Vince McMahon.
Vince wished everyone a good morning and thanked everyone for being there. He also thanked the 8 city representatives and the venues that The XFL is partnering with for the inaugural season. He also thanked the media. Vince then said that it’s ironic that the original XFL started 20 years ago. He said a lot has changed since then and they are looking forward to bringing a more innovative, exciting product. The XFL will launch on February 8th and February 9th, 2020, the weekend following The Super Bowl. Vince then said that they are really looking forward to once again establishing an exciting, innovative form of football, one we have never seen before. Vince then said that so much has changed since then, citing social media and ways of distributing, plus other options that were not available before. With that in mind, Vince introduced a man who loves football, a man who brought all of this to life, one with impeccable integrity – Oliver Luck, The CEO & Commissioner of the league.
Luck called this a momentous day. He talked about how they have been seeking input from key stakeholders and fans and they believe that launching in 2020 will give them the time they need to get everything right. They believe that they are well on their way to bringing fans a fast paced, high impact product with fewer stops and more plays. Their motto is “less stall and more ball” for the league. Luck said that this is football re-imagined. They are paying great attention to player safety, a more advanced fan experience with technology. Luck also said that research shows fans want more football and The XFL intends to provide that. Luck also said that The XFL wants to compliment regular football. Luck then said that they have talked with other football leagues and players. Luck then talked about how they launched their “Football Re-Imagined Committee” with the advisers that were recently revealed on The XFL website, plus media executives, health professionals and others. Luck then said that they held a series of meetings to talk about the game they love, how they will tweak that game for a familiar but innovative experience. Luck then said that they are looking at bringing a quality game played under 3 hours with meaningful on-field acts and changes to rules such as the play clock, kickoffs, extra points and more, including the in-game rhythm, the in-game flow. Luck then said that they plan to accomplish this by limiting game timeouts and TV timeouts and by simplifying things. Luck then said that they are also improving player safety and making that a top priority. Luck then said that they are establishing an extensive health & wellness program with various professionals from several medical fields. Luck then said that the league is committed to listening to fans, connecting with them through surveys and focus groups. Luck then said that some of their best ideas so far have come from the fans. Luck then said that they will bring a product that is fan-centric, family friendly, with a good, solid in-game stadium experience that is affordable for families.
Luck then said that they are also working closely with venue partners on ticket prices and programs that will give fans access to players & coaches. Luck then said that this is critical to make the game day experience better for fans. Luck also said that they are developing a state of the art mobile app that will be the hub for the XFL, featuring news, videos, scores, fan interaction with teams & players & each other. Luck then said that they are committed to establishing a health & wellness program with world-renowned medical experts. Luck then said that they are doing everything possible to keep players safe by partnering with 2 of the leading sports risk insurance companies. Luck then said that they will also test for performance enhancing substances. Luck also said that the teams will all have the same budgets for player salaries and they will offer very competitive salaries for all players. Luck then said that they have hired Doug Whaley as The Senior VP Of Football Operations. Luck then said that Whaley previously worked with The NFL’s Buffalo Bills & Pittsburgh Steelers. Luck then said that they also hired Roxanne Kosarzycki as The General Counsel. Luck then said that she previously worked with The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and other teams. Luck then said that they have also partnered with Optimum Scouting to help find the type of players they hope to sign, and they feel they are well on their way to identifying team Presidents and Head Coaches, who will also serve as The General Managers for the teams. Luck then said that they will begin filling those positions during the first quarter of 2019. Luck then said that they are also looking to start signing quarterbacks and other players around that time. Luck then said that they are looking for the best players and coaches who want to be a part of something special. Luck then said that the vast majority of players will have college and NFL experience. Luck then said that there will be a XFL Draft, tryouts and a Supplemental Draft, which will take place in the summer of fall of 2019. Luck then said that the league will also invite players to tryout who have been cut from The NFL.

Luck then said that they are a big proponent of giving fans a safe and legal way to bet on games. Luck then said that they have been keeping an eye on sports gaming. He then noted how some states have legalized sports gambling and they expect more states to legalize it by the time they launch in 2020. Luck also noted that the media partnerships are very important to the league. Luck then said that they are confident that their games will be widely available on multiple platforms for an incredible level of exposure. Luck then said that they have exciting news to share soon on the specifics of distribution.
Luck also noted that more than 30 cities expressed interest in securing an XFL team. Luck then said that the league felt that it was important to not just look at coming into a city and renting a building, their goal was to establish true partnerships and build organizations that have a year-round presence in the cities. Luck then said that they are confident that they picked the right venues and cities to help with that goal. Luck then prepared to introduce the 8 teams for the inaugural season and noted that they have been “thinking big” as Vince likes to think big.
MetLife Stadium CEO Ron VanDeVeen was introduced as a promo aired for The New York City team. Ron noted that The 10 year anniversary of the stadium starts in 2019 with WrestleMania 35 and ends with the launch of The XFL. Ron then said that he has been working with Vince and The WWE team for over 20 years and he looks forward to a successful partnership for years to come. Luck then introduced The Dallas team next as Neil Leibman of The MLB’s Texas Rangers came out. He talked about the new stadium and said that they are excited to partner with The XFL as the first tenant of Globe Life Park. Luck then announced Houston next. Janice Burke, CEO of Houston Sports Authority, came out to speak. She said that Houston is thrilled and they couldn’t have picked a better partner than The University of Houston as they have been passionate about this from the beginning. She also mentioned Bush 41 being a big sports fan from Houston. Luck then introduced Katie Pandolfo of The StubHub Center next and she spoke about The Los Angeles team. Pandolfo also spoke about how LA has seen 2 other football teams come in recently and she has learned that LA has passionate football fans. Andrew Leonard & Kitty Ratcliffe of Explore St. Louis were introduced next to speak about The St. Louis XFL team. They said that they are excited about bringing football back to St. Louis. Given Vince’s history and his team, they believe fans in St. Louis will take to the new brand of football as they have with every WWE event that’s been held in St. Louis. Ralph Morton of The Seattle Sports Commission was introduced next. He talked about how Seattle has diehard football fans and they hope to win the inaugural XFL Championship. Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan came out next to talk about The Tampa Bay XFL team, noting that The XFL could not have picked a more football-centric city. He talked about the various sporting events to be held in the city and how they say everyday is game day in Tampa. Erik A. Moses was out last to talk about The Washington, DC team. Moses said that Major League Soccer fans have given rave reviews for the first year of Audi Field and they know XFL fans will feel the same way. Moses then said that the sports capital of The United States is ready for The XFL.

The 8 teams and venues for the inaugural season were announced as the following:
– New York City = MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ
– Dallas = Globe Life Park in Arlington, TX
– Houston = TDECU Stadium
– Los Angeles = StubHub Center
– St. Louis = The Dome at America’s Center
– Seattle = CenturyLink Field
– Tampa Bay = Raymond James Stadium
– Washington, DC = Audi Field
Luck then noted that a quarter of The United States population is represented in these 8 cities combined and a good chunk of the “I Hate It When Football Season Ends” fans are there. He also announced that fans can place a deposit on season tickets now before they go on sale to the general public. Luck then said that they will be making hires, announcing team names & logos and more in the coming months. Luck then said that the quality of football is their #1 priority and they will do everything to get that right. Luck then said that The XFL will be fast paced, affordable, family friendly, interactive and as technically advanced as possible. Luck ended the presser by saying that The XFL is being built for fans and built to last.
