In case you missed the big show, read Dave’s running recap and get the details on the five title changes that happened.

UFC 215 main event off due to illness

Ray Borg, who was scheduled to headline Saturday’s UFC 215 against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, was pulled from the Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, event Thursday night due to an illness that wasn’t related to weight cutting.

Due to the late nature of the change, Johnson, who was going for the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses, is now off the show as well. UFC is looking at booking the fight as soon as possible.

The show will remain a PPV with a main event of women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko II. That fight was originally scheduled for this past summer, but had to be postponed due to a late pullout by Nunes due to complications from sinusitis.

MMA Fighting reported that Borg had been ill all week and had gotten progressively sicker. However, he was examined by UFC doctors who ruled he was too ill to fight and wouldn’t clear him. Borg said he was 133 pounds on Thursday morning, not a substantial weight cut to hit 125 by Friday morning.

Johnson came into the fight with ten straight title defenses, tying the all-time UFC record held originally by Anderson Silva. He has been the subject of controversy this summer after speaking out against Dana White when he attempted to get him to fight T.J. Dillashaw instead of Borg.

Henry Cejudo vs. Wilson Reis now moves to a main card that also features former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos vs. Neil Magny, Ilir Latifi vs. Tyson Pedro, and Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens.

WWE SmackDown video highlights: Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

As SmackDown continued building to Hell in a Cell, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn renewed their rivalry in last night’s main event.

The referee stopped the match after Owens powerbombed Zayn on the apron. He tried to continue the attack after and wrapped a chair around Zayn’s head, then Shane McMahon came down in an attempt to make the save until Owens threw Zayn at him and fled.

Shinsuke Nakamura also returned to television last night to get revenge on Jinder Mahal after two weeks of being mocked by him, Randy Orton ruined Rusev’s “Pride of Bulgaria Celebration,” and Bobby Roode interrupted Dolph Ziggler as they set up their match for the pay-per-view.

The Delaware Supreme Court on 9/18 ruled 3-0 not to overturn the Chancery Court ruling that the WWF would be able to accept the Viacom deal, and thus ending its 17-year relationship with the USA Network. The decision was more than one month in the making, which left much of the entire pro wrestling industry, and both networks, paralyzed to an extent, certainly as it pertained to wrestling programming.

Migrant’s son challenges Angela Merkel from left field as Greens poised for upset in Germany’s financial capital

Tarek al-Wazir is not an obvious figure to be the man who brings down Angela Merkel. The son of a Yemeni immigrant father and a German mother, he backed her “open-door” refugee policy even when her own party rebelled against it.

But if the polls are right, he is set to lead the Green Party to a stunning upset when Frankfurt, Germany’s financial capital, votes at the weekend – and already there are warnings that it could leave the German chancellor facing the collapse of her coalition or a leadership challenge from within her own party.

“We are getting votes from people who usually don’t even bother with politics,” Mr Wazir said. “They’re unhappy with the populism that is sweeping Europe and they…

NJPW reveals full World Tag League 2017 lineup

Some familiar faces to fans in the United States will be debuting for New Japan Pro Wrestling as part of this year’s World Tag League tour.

NJPW announced that Jeff Cobb, Chuck Taylor, and Sami Callihan would all be debuting in the tournament. Cobb, who was originally scheduled to team with Matt Riddle before plans changed, will partner with Michael Elgin, Taylor will be paired with usual partner Trent Barreta, and Callihan will team with Juice Robinson.

In a change from recent years, wrestlers who already have matches announced for Wrestle Kingdom 12 (including top stars like Kazuchika Okada, Tetsuya Naito, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Kenny Omega) won’t be participating in World Tag League.

Whichever team wins will likely challenge for the IWGP Tag Team Championship at Wrestle Kingdom on January 4th. Killer Elite Squad, the team that currently holds the titles, will also be in the tournament.

World Tag League 2017 begins on November 18th in Tokyo. The finals will take place on December 11th in Fukuoka, with the winners of the A Block facing the winners of the B Block. Here’s the full list of teams for the tournament.

A Block —
Juice Robinson & Sami Callihan
Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima
Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi
Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens
Hangman Page & Yujiro Takahashi
Minoru Suzuki & Takashi Iizuka
EVIL & SANADA
B Block —
Togi Makabe & Henare
Michael Elgin & Jeff Cobb
David Finlay & Katsuya Kitamura
War Machine (Ray Rowe & Hanson)
Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano
Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor
Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Roa)
Killer Elite Squad (Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr.)

Ganges to get dedicated armed police force to halt pollution of holy Indian river

Armed police may be assigned to protect India’s holy River Ganges from pollution and misuse, under new government proposals to save the river from further degradation.

A draft bill has proposed the creation of a ‘Ganga [Ganges] Protection Corps’, with a mandate to arrest polluters of the sewage-stricken watercourse that runs through eleven states.

The bill aims to return the Ganges – that provides drinking and irrigation water for about 500 million people – to its “pristine stage and ensure its uninterrupted flow”.

Offences punishable under the bill include “spoiling or defacing … stairs” leading to the water, or “throwing any offensive matter” in the river. Other offences include “stone quarrying, commercial fishing without permission, deforesting hill slopes, withdrawing groundwater for organised consumption through tube wells”.

Despite the Ganges and the Yamuna rivers being sacred to Hindus and being a source of water for washing, drinking, commerce and fishing, hundreds of miles of both are filed with toxic levels of chemicals and raw sewage.

Successive pledges by governments to tackle the problem have yielded little real progress. And critics say this bill is just more window dressing.

The plans were drawn up days before the death of the green activist and spiritual leader Professor GD Agarwal, who died after a prolonged hunger strike over the state of the river.

The Hindustan Times reported that the government claimed Prof Agarwal had seen the proposals before his death.

But Mallika Bhanot, of the NGO Ganga Ahwaan, said: “The major issues are building barrages and diverting flows of the river, dredging to make way for inland water ways, hydroelectric projects that impact the flow and massive deforestation destroying the overall ecology”

“The draft doesn’t mention how these will be tackled.”

NJPW World Tag League: Results, standings & analysis four shows in

By Ethan Renner

New Japan Pro Wrestling’s World Tag League is underway, and the story of the tournament so far is how the newcomers have fared.

Sami Callihan, paired with Juice Robinson, Jeff Cobb, partnered with Michael Elgin, and Chuck Taylor, teaming with Beretta, have all tasted victory in their opening matches.

In Callihan’s case, it was difficult for me to believe that he was the same performer that I saw in WWE in 2015. Particularly when in the ring with EVIL, Callihan displayed a confidence as a performer that I thought he was lacking in his NXT tenure. Robinson played well off his over-the-top intensity, and the duo held up their end of the main event spot on night one of the tournament.

Taylor might have a tougher road, as his reactions in the early going of his opening match were tepid at best. But as illustrated by the great response to some of his flying work late in the match, his stuff will play here, and he will eventually get over.

Cobb was born to wrestle in NJPW. His powerhouse frame and intensity are pluses, and to top it off, he got to work with Tomohiro Ishii, both in a six-man on night one, and in a tournament match on night three. Any time Ishii sold for Cobb it gave him instant credibility, and coupled with his ability, it is easy to predict singles stardom for Cobb here in the future.

Night one results —

Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI defeated Minoru Suzuki & Takashi Iizuka (A Block)

They did lots of crowd brawling early. I am of the opinion that the next time a crowd brawl looks good in modern wrestling will be the first time. Suzuki and Iizuka used chairs as they fought all over the building, but no disqualifications were called.

This was fine, maybe even good when Goto and Suzuki were in together, but ranged from middling to poor otherwise. The finish saw YOSHI-HASHI break up a guillotine attempt by Suzuki on Goto, who recovered and nailed Suzuki with his finisher for the pin.

Juice Robinson & Sami Callihan defeated SANADA & EVIL (A Block)

Robinson and SANADA did some nice mat work early. Callihan and EVIL did some power stuff, and Callihan hit a sick dive through the middle and bottom ropes to the outside.

SANADA and EVIL worked over Robinson before it broke down into a four-way. Callihan kissed Robinson at one point to try to fire him up. He saved Robinson as EVIL went to finish him, and Robinson recovered and hit the Pulp Friction for the pin.

Night two results —

Best Friends (Beretta & Chuck Taylor) defeated Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa) (B Block)

A couple of nice spots early highlighted Taylor’s agility. This was all about establishing Taylor and Beretta’s friendship and teamwork. After some flying and crowd brawling early on, this settled down into your basic tag match, with the Guerillas working over Beretta.

The match wasn’t getting over to a great degree until Taylor hit a beautiful tope. Beretta eventually hit a Dudebuster for the win.

Michael Elgin & Jeff Cobb defeated Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano (B Block)

Cobb and Ishii started off. They pounded away at each other, no-sold each other, and the crowd ate it up. When Ishii eventually left his feet and bumped for a Cobb shoulder block, the place loved it. Elgin and Yano did some comedy. Ishii and Yano double-teamed Cobb, then Elgin got a tag and ran wild.

Elgin and Ishii did some of their trademark power stuff before it broke down. Cobb saved Elgin from a near fall with rolling German suplexes on Ishii. Cobb and Elgin got a great near fall with a double team move, and Elgin hit Ishii with a buckle bomb and a sit-out powerbomb for the pin. This was good stuff.

Night three results —

Yujiro Takahashi & Hangman Page defeated Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi (A Block)

They kept it simple and tried to milk the crowd early on. The Bullet Club got the heat on Nakanishi with a low blow while the referee was distracted. Page and Takahashi then worked over Nakanishi forever with chops, kicks, and eye gouging.

Nagata got a tag and looked pretty good in working with Page, but Takahashi ended up hitting Nakanishi with the Pimp Juice DDT for the pin.

Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima (A Block)

A battle of the Bullet Club and the Bread Club. Tenzan and Kojima worked over Owens in the early going. He recovered and all four guys brawled outside and into the crowd. Back inside, Owens worked on Kojima with punches and elbows.

Fale tagged in for the occasional power spot, but this was largely Owens doing the bulk of the work and keeping it very simple. Fale hit the Bad Luck Fall on Kojima for the pin.

Night four results —

This show took place in Yamanashi on Tuesday and was recently uploaded to NJPW World. Here are quick results from the two tournament matches:

Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer) defeated David Finlay & Katsuya Kitamura (B Block)

Smith Jr. pinned Kitamura after a double-team powerbomb.

War Machine (Ray Rowe & Hanson) defeated Togi Makabe & Henare (B Block)

Rowe got the pin on Henare after War Machine hit Fallout (a diving leg drop/belly-to-back suplex combo).

Current standings —

A Block

Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI — 2
Juice Robinson & Sami Callihan — 2
Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens — 2
Yujiro Takahashi & Hangman Page — 2
SANADA & EVIL — 0
Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima — 0
Manabu Nakanishi & Yuji Nagata — 0
Minoru Suzuki & Takashi Iizuka — 0

B Block

Best Friends (Beretta & Chuck Taylor) — 2
Michael Elgin & Jeff Cobb — 2
Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer) — 2
War Machine (Ray Rowe & Hanson) — 2
David Finlay & Katsuya Kitamura — 0

Continuity candidate to replace German chancellor tries to distance herself from ‘mini Merkel’ label

The woman widely seen as Angela Merkel’s chosen heir launched her campaign to succeed her as party leader Wednesday by pledging a new era in German politics.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer told a press conference in Berlin she will work to restore confidence and trust in the Christian Democrat party (CDU) if chosen as leader.

“This is the end of an era. Angela Merkel has made way for a new chapter in the history of the CDU,” she said.

The 56-year-old Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer is one of three main candidates to succeed Mrs Merkel, who is stepping down as party leader in December but wants to stay on as chancellor until 2021.

Popularly known as “mini-Merkel”, Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer is the contender closest to the chancellor in policy and style — but was at pains on Wednesday to portray herself as more than the continuity candidate.

“Mrs Merkel has shaped the CDU. Such an era cannot go on forever, but equally it cannot be undone,” she said. “Every time has its challenges, and the successor is always standing on the shoulders of her predecessor.”

It was a carefully crafted pitch for the support of CDU delegates who do not want to overturn the successes of the Merkel era.

Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer’s main competitors for the leadership are both seen as more likely to take the party in a new direction: Friedrich Merz is an old rival of the chancellor, while Jens Spahn is one of her most outspoken critics.

Runners and riders to succeed Angela Merkel

“We do not need to make the CDU great again, because it already is,” she said. But she acknowledged the struggles of the past year, which have seen sweeping losses for the party in national and regional elections. “I have felt the party’s frustration. We have been through a leaden time in recent months,” she said.

Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer was initially seen as the favourite to succeed Mrs Merkel but she appeared to slip back following Mr Merz’s surprise candidacy. Initial polls have found him ahead with the general public.

But Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer said she was not going to run a “ruinous competition” campaign against the other candidates, and pledged to include them in the party’s future if she wins.

In a pitch likely to go down well with the conference delegates who will elect the next leader, she said she wanted to make the party’s a stronger voice in determining policy, and not just a cheerleader for the government.

She identified three main themes for her campaign: security, social cohesion, and the economy. On security she said the key question was how to restore confidence in the state.

The answer had to come in a European context, she said, because “we live in an open Europe”, but she warned: “We will not win confidence in our domestic security by making loud noises” — a clear broadside against the populist Right.

She pledged to modernise Germany’s economy, and accelerate digitalisation, an area in which the country is widely seen as lagging behind its competitors.

On social cohesion, she said: “We need a common commitment that holds us together,” and spoke of finding answers in the CDU’s Christian values.

Krisztian Bocsi/Bloomberg

Mr Spahn has sought to make migration and Mrs Merkel’s “open-door” refugee policy of 2015 the central issue of the campaign. Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer rejected that, saying: “Migration is an issue that concerns people. But it’s not the number one issue. What happened in 2015 is a reality, a fact that cannot and will not be undone. But it must not be repeated.”

The CDU lost more votes to the pro-migrant Greens than the anti-migrant Alternative for Germnay party (AfD) in recent regional elections, and Mr Merz has also been wary of focusing too closely on the issue.

“The CDU is facing a watershed and difficult political challenges. We must bring the political discussion back to the center and not leave it to the extremes,” he told a party meeting on Tuesday evening.

In a development that could cause problems for Mr Merz’s candidacy, prosecutors investigating suspected tax fraud raided the German branch of the BlackRock investment fund, where Mr Merz is head of the supervisory board, on Tuesday.

The alleged fraud dates from long before Mr Merz joined the company, and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing. But an investigation could complicate his candidacy if he is forced to defend the company.

The CDU’s biggest regional association announced on Tuesday evening that it would not endorse any of the candidates to succeed Mrs Merkel, but would leave its delegates to make their own decision.

The North Rhine-Westphalia association will account for almost a third of the 1,0001 delegates who will choose the next leader at the party conference in December, and their votes could be crucial.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly 1/8/2018: Jericho continues to make wrestling a better place

At 47 years old, Chris Jericho would have been forgiven if his match against Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 wasn’t a classic. No one expected Jericho vs Omega to live up to Kazuchika Okada vs. Omega from the year prior. There was no way it could have. It was enough that Jericho, someone who’s been with WWE since 1999 and has enjoyed a privileged position for most of his run, was wrestling in NJPW at all. Interest for this year’s Tokyo Dome show was up fairly substantially from the last few years across the board, with attendance figures and New Japan World subscriber numbers rising year-over-year.

WON BACK ISSUE: December 25, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Blue Demon passes away, WCW talent walks out on tapings, more

Alejandro Munoz Moreno, who was a 1960s Mexican movie star and possibly the second most famous wrestlers in that country’s history as the Blue Demon, passed away on 12/16 from a heart attack at the age of 78. Demon, who would probably be ranked just behind El Santo as the most famous cultural wrestling icon in Mexico, starred in even lower budget movies than those which made Santo one of the most beloved and probably the longest enduring wrestling legend in any culture.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
TMZ reported that Triple H had dinner with Ronda Rousey and her agent in Los Angeles last night. Though the article noted that it was a big deal for Triple H to miss SmackDown for the dinner, he and Stephanie McMahon were already in LA for Television Critics Association press events to celebrate the 25th anniversary episode of Raw.
While speaking with TheWrap, Triple H was asked if there was an exception that could be made to allow Daniel Bryan to return to the ring with WWE: “There can be no exception medically. If the belief is that he’s not healthy enough and there’s a risk [for him] to perform, then I don’t know why you’d allow him to step into the ring unless it can be proven otherwise. There will be no exceptions. We have some of the best medical people in the world that work for us. Our wellness policy, our concussion programming, our protocols — I’ll put them up there against any on the planet. That is a new science in a way, too. So we’re gonna look at it from all aspects, but the medical experts will make the determination as to whether he can ever step into that ring or not. Look, personally for him, I know it would be something he would love to do, and part of me feels like I hope he has that opportunity. But at the same point in time, he’s married and has a child. Certainly, [we put] the human being first.”
When asked why Donald Trump wasn’t included in a celebrity sizzle reel that WWE presented, Stephanie said WWE “made a strategic decision to not put forth any type of partisan politics at all” in their programming.
Triple H and Stephanie noted WWE is waiting for the legal process to play out in Rich Swann’s arrest. They reiterated that Swann will be immediately released if he’s convicted, which is what WWE’s zero-tolerance domestic abuse policy calls for.
PWInsider reported that Gabe Sapolsky will be signing an official contract with WWE to work as a consultant. Sapolsky has been working in that role in NXT, and PWInsider wrote that he’ll maintain his position with WWN/EVOLVE.
Matt Hardy tweeted a photo with Anthem’s Ed Nordholm and mentioned that they’re now on the same page: “I am thrilled to PROCLAIM that we have ACQUIRED new ALLIES on our side of #TheGreatWar. Ed Nordholm & The Owl of Anthem have revealed themselves as MAJESTIC beings who stand on the side of the LIGHT. The LIGHT always EMERGES, #WOKENWarriors. Everything is COPASETIC & WONDERFUL!”
The Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, which will host Fastlane on March 11th, put out a WWE-produced video that continues to advertise AJ Styles defending the WWE Championship against Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn in a fatal five-way match as the PPV’s main event.

He said he has to reevaluate and see what he wants to do next, where the next big impact can be, and what time he has available.
In an in-character interview with Tokyo Sports, Omega talked about the angle where he stopped Cody Rhodes from hitting Kota Ibushi with a chair at New Year’s Dash: “Cody went into business for himself. That’s the kind of thing Jericho would do, or Suzuki Gun. I don’t want that from Bullet Club. I want us to be the best in ring bell to bell. I’ll have to go back to Canada, take a break and think about this. Of course Kota and I have a lot of history but any more than that.. no comment.”
In addition to Cody and The Young Bucks, Omega, Marty Scurll, Stephen Amell, and Hangman Page have tweeted that they’re “All In” for Cody and the Bucks’ 10,000 seat show. The location for the show will be revealed on a future episode of Being the Elite.
