US Trials Party to benefit NE
Distance July 1, 2012 at Rhode Runner Providence

Providence, May 15, 2012:  Track and field fans can gather to watch
the final night of the US Olympic Trials while helping to send local runners to
the next trials.  Rhode Runner, 657
North Main Street in Providence will be hosting a party on July 1, 2012 from
6-9 pm in their community room to benefit NE Distance, a new distance project
starting this fall.

NE Distance, Inc. will provide fellowships for post-collegiate
runners committed to representing their community and reaching a higher level
of competition.  NE Distance
runners will be living in Woonsocket training to represent New England in
national and international competitions.

Through a partnership with NeighborWorks Blackstone Valley (http://www.neighborworksbrv.org/)
and the Woonsocket After-School Coalition (http://woonsocketafterschool.org/),
athletes will be matched with one of several after-school youth organizations.
Working 16 to 20 hours per week will allow the runners to be involved with the
community while being paid for their time.‰Ûª

‰ÛÏAt the party, we‰Ûªll be showing the live finals of the 1500 meter
events and then taped races from earlier in the week‰Û, says NE Distance
President, Nich Haber.  ‰ÛÏWe‰Ûªll have
some great auction items available including an autographed singlet of US
Olympian and 2011 Boston Marathon runner-up Desiree Davila, courtesy of Brooks.‰Û

Suggested donation of $20 in advance or $30 the day of the
event.  More information is
available at www.nedistance.org.

About Rhode Runner – Rhode Runner is devoted to keeping our
customers running and walking in the greatest comfort possible.  We provide each customer with a gait
analysis and a comprehensive shoe fitting process that encompasses proper
support, cushioning and proper fit.
During the party, the store will be open and attendees will receive a

Green Mountain Relay Registration Open

Registration
Now Open for 200-Mile Vermont Running Relay
8th Annual Green
Mountain
Relay
to Run through Heart of Vermont

December
20, 2012– Registration is now open for the eighth annual Green
Mountain
Relay
, a 200-mile team running relay race in Vermont.

The
Green Mountain Relay will take place Saturday and Sunday
June 22-23, 2013,
taking advantage of the summer solstice.  According to Timberline
Events
, the event sponsor, the relay will start in
Jeffersonville, VT at
the Cambridge Elementary School, and wind down through the heart
of Vermont and
the Green Mountains, on both paved and dirt roads, crossing
seven covered
bridges, passing through many small, picturesque towns.  On this
very
scenic route, rRunners will pass through areas in or near Stowe,
Waterbury,
Waitsfield, Killington, Ludlow, and Manchester; smaller towns
visited include
Moretown, Hancock, Pittsfield, Weston, Londonderry, and
Arlington., and will
cross over seven covered bridges.  The finish of the relay will
be at the
Mount Anthony Union Middle School in Bennington, VT.

“The
communities and businesses of Vermont have been very supportive
of this
event,” says race organizer Paul Vanderheiden.  “Schools, ski
areas, community organizations, local businesses, and town and
state agencies
have been very generous in allowing their facilities to be used
as Exchanges
for the runners.

Teams
of 12 can compete in men’s, women’s, mixed, open, master’s, and
High
School categories.  Each runner will run three legs averaging
5.6
miles.  Longer-distance runners can form a six-person ‰ÛÏultra‰Û
team in
which each person runs an average of 33.7 miles.  There is a
limit of 100
teams.

One
thing that makes the Green Mountain Relay different is how the
race supports
nonprofit groups throughout Vermont.  Each
team must provide three volunteers who will help staff the
relay, working at
the runner exchanges or as course marshals.  As an option, teams
may make
a donation to a program called Volunteers With A Purpose,
Inc,
where
local community non-profit organizations supply volunteers to
work during the
relay as a fund-raising opportunity.  Since Roads Less Traveled
Relays
began organizing relays in 2005, they have donated over $220,000
to nonprofit
groups in Vermont, Colorado, and Oregon.

‰ÛÏIn
most relay events, teams must ask friends and/or family members
to volunteer as
race marshals or to staff the runner exchanges,‰Û says
Vanderheiden.  ‰ÛÏWith
this option, we have an opportunity to support the local
communities while
making it easier for teams to participate.‰Û

Vermont
non-profit organizations interested in more information about
being involved
with Volunteers With A Purpose should contact the race
director.

20% of B.A.A. Half Marathon Field via Random Selection

B.A.A. Adds Random Selection to Entry Protocol for 2014 B.A.A. Half Marathon®

20% of 8,000 runner field to be randomly selected from all submissions during registration on July 16-17.

BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) will add a random selection component to the registration
process for the 2014 B.A.A. Half Marathon® when entries are accepted next month.

The
14th B.A.A. Half
Marathon, presented by Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, will be held on
Sunday, October 12 and will have a field size of 8,000 entrants. The
race starts and finishes in
Boston’s Franklin Park at 8:30 a.m. and is New England’s most popular
13.1 mile road race.

Registration
will open on Wednesday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m. ET, and 3,000 entrants
will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The remainder of
the field will be filled through random selection of those applicants
who submit an entry by Thursday, July 17 at 5:00 p.m. ET.  Twenty
percent of the overall field (1,600 entrants) will be chosen through
random selection.

“In
order to address fairly the increasingly growing demand for entry into
the B.A.A. Half
Marathon, we will introduce an industry-accepted process to our
registration protocol,” said Tom Grilk, B.A.A. Executive Director. “We
have witnessed interest grow year after year from runners wanting to
participate in the B.A.A. Half Marathon, and using random selection to
fill part of the field recognizes that there are more runners who want
to run this race than we can accommodate.”

For the 2013 race last year, the field was filled in eleven minutes on a first-come, first-served basis.

In
addition to the first-come, first-served aspect and the random
selection component in place for 2014, 700 runners will comprise the

Dana-Farber Fundraising Team and each of those team members will raise
at least $750 for the Jimmy Fund. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the
Jimmy Fund have been the event’s presenting sponsor since 2003.

Another
2,625 runners are participating in the B.A.A. Distance Medley: the
three-race series consisting of the B.A.A. 5K on April 19, the B.A.A.
10K on June 22, and the B.A.A. Half
Marathon on October 12.  B.A.A. Distance Medley participants registered
in January.

Entry
for the B.A.A. Half
Marathon will be held entirely online at baa.org, and the entry fee is
$75 USD. No additional fee will be imposed for an entry submission into
the random selection. Participants in the B.A.A. Half
Marathon must be at least 14-years old on race day. Every submission
has an equal chance of being selected, and the odds of being selected
will be based on the total number of submissions received. Only one
submission per person will be accepted.  Entry in the B.A.A. Half
Marathon cannot be transferred.  Those who are accepted through random
selection and those not accepted will receive notification from the
B.A.A. on Friday, July 18 via email.

Pub Series Fun in the Sun in Falmouth

(Publicans Candice Gagnon and Eileen Cakouris at Liam’s – photo by FitzFoto/NERunner)

Sorry for the delay in getting this out, but between a race
Saturday evening (while many were at the Capt. Kidd in Wood’s Hole) and the
double-fisted Liam’s/Birdville post and post-post gatherings and Sunday stay-over,
plus the zillion names to cross reference in the “Miss two, you’re through”
category, it’s been a laborious labor of love.

Surprise, surprise, as Brooklinite Dave Wilson showed on the Cape and is now 3-3 on the Pub ledger,
although SRR’s Greg Picklesimer
picked off defending Pub champ TJ Unger
of HFC on the return route along Surf Drive to close to within 7-seconds of
young Wilson, 25:49 to 25:56. Pickle Power now resides 1-point ahead of TJ.

HFC’s Lee Danforth
in 4th (27:01) retains that position while CSU’s Patrick Bugbee‰ÛÓlooking tough at a Cape Cod Dunkin’ Donuts after
coming off a wedding the day before in Orleans‰ÛÓran surprisingly well (7th) to
close to within 1-point of HFC’s Andrew
Holmes
(8th) for the coveted 5th and final Open $ position.

Click Here: brisbane lions guernsey 2019

Former Pub Series Queen Mimi
Fallon
, 49, chased current leader Ginger
Reiner
of CSU early but Ginger is tough stuff (and 11 yrs. younger) and
remains 1-point away from a perfect record after winning in 30:08. Fallon
pounced onto second in 30:45. (Mimi & Ginger, photo by MickFoto/NERunner).

Wearing the new ultra chic “shocking pink” Team Fabulous
singlet, 2014 co-champ Candice Gagnon
corralled 3rd in 30:55, followed by a Magnificent Masters showdown between
Falmouth TC superstar Anne Preisig,
46, and pub powerhouse Holly Madden,
49, of Whirlaway. This title would go to Holly in 31:31 to Preisig’s 31:48.

Gagnon and Madden are now 2-3 on the leaderboard while there
was considerable movement following the top 3 as the 3-4-6 Series sirens were
all AWOL. We’re not sure where NH’s Liz
Whiting
was, but 4th placer Amanda
Watters
of the BAA was overseeing some women she coaches running in a RI
marathon. SRR braniac Mariah Tinger
was working on a 100-page thesis and presentation, plus she has two small kids
so we’ll give her a pass until Napper Tandy’s.

Anyway, a host of women moved up, none more dramatically
than Whirlaway’s Katrina Martin, 22,
who moved from 21st to 10th.

Currently runners-up in the Masters division, CSU’s Kevin Delaney and HFC’s Eileen Cakouros are wishing Picklesimer
and Madden continued success in the Open division. (photo left, “Strack” & Chris Diehl, photo by FitzFoto/NERunner)

Two-time champ Terry
McNatt
is looking unstoppable among Seniors while counterpart Marge Bellisle is in line for our
Betwixt & Between award after winning her second straight 50+ showdown but
turning 60 before Napper Tandy’s. That leaves GBTC’s Claire McManus and Liberty’s Vicki
Bok
to duke it out with just a point separating them.

It was so jam packed in Liam’s for the awards ceremony that
it was tough to hear the men’s 60+ winner, but it wasn’t HFC’s George Braun, and this sent the HFC
contingent into a bewildered tizzy. In truth, Thirsty Irish Runner Dave Wessman had turned the tables on
George after two losing encounters, 31:05 to 31:36. For those who remember,
Dave won the Pub Series Senior category on several occasions while a younger
man. Like McNatt, Quincy Pub veteran Joanne
Morris
seems to have a lock on her category although “birthday girl” Marianne Withington of the Marshfield
RR garnered 4-points as part of her day-of celebration.

With the absence of 70+ leader Rick Stetson, Pub stalwart Dave
Pember
vaulted into 1st in the 70+ category, followed by Joe Noonan and NH Wildman Denny LeBlanc. No times mentioned here
as 70+ women’s leader Jan Holmquist
has yet to be drug tested following her 35:33 scamper. Actually, this is par
for the course for Jan, and she is
just coming off a US W70 record from the James Joyce Ramble 10K. Sub-36‰Û¢child’s
play!

Top Octogenarian was, of course, the indefatigable Larry Cole, 81, of the Cape Cod AC. (photo right – Holly Madden & Ken Warren, photo by FitzFoto/NERunner)

So congrats to PCB
Management
and Liam’s on a very
successful inaugural outing. Also, to Courtney
and Carolyn Bird who opened up
their manor with its magnificent ocean view for the post post-race celebration.

Pub Cavalcade Overuns Corrib, McGrane Gets A Wedgie!?

There are a lot of reasons the Corrib Pub 5K has been a frequent host to the Pub Series. As far as venues go, you can’t beat expansive Billings Field. The acreage allows for kids races, multiple vendors (an HFC tent by the beer line) three bouncy houses, a large barbeque area and lots of open, green space to stretch out and relax.

The Pub Series ripple effect was evident here as numbers swelled from 1,674 finishers last year to 2,125 this June 4. That’s not a record. For that you go back two years to the previous Pub Series expedition to W. Roxbury that drew 2,530 finishers (the previous non Pub year there were 1,951).

(Start photo.FitzFoto/NER)

Whatever the number, it’s a large field in today’s market. The Mayor and Governor were on hand, and it can be noted that in its 24th year the Corrib Charitable Trust has donated 1.7 million dollars, all local, to schools, sports teams and local charities.

The sun was out, spirits were high and sleep deprived Pub Series leader Shawn Wallace moved right to the front with SRR’s Chris Kluczniak and CSU’s Patrick Bugbee.

(Photo: runner-up Chris Kluczniak, MickFoto/NERunner

Chris clocked himself and Pat at 5:12 for the mile with Wallace about 4-seconds ahead, but when the course left the VFW Parkway, Wallace was gone, eventually stopping the clock on LaGrange St. in a swift 16:03. Not bad for a guy who just had his second kid a week ago and needed an urn of coffee and a kitchen pass just to make the race.

“Seventy doesn’t seem that warm these days, but it takes a toll,” commented Chris K. “It seemed like we were running faster than we were.” Kluzniak posted up 2nd in 16:23 with Bugbee 3rd in 16:49.

A close 2nd in the standings entering the race, HFC’s TJ Unger wasn’t feeling good and placed 19th with Kluzniak, Bugbee and recent Martha’s Vineyard Marathon winner Lee Danforth of HFC (an 800m man at NU) jumping ahead of “The People’s Champion” in the standings

Present Pub Queen Hayley Sutter averaged sub-6s to retain her lead with an 18:32 scamper, but surprising HFC starlet Alexandra Walsh was not far behind in 18:43. The 22 year-old didn’t run in college and was talked into running a road race not long ago (there’s some talent here).

The BAA’s Amanda Watters had a solid race to place 4th among women in 19:44 and hold onto the 2nd slot in the Series. Let’s jump ahead here as Amanda won a gift card to the Corrib and accompanied husband Mike McGrane and super senior Greg Picklesimer of SRR (top Senior, 6th overall in 17:05) into the Corrib in search of a veggie burger.

Hello, the Corrib is old school like Doyle’s is old school and NER was intently interested to know if a “veggie burger” was even on the menu. It was, but McGrane emailed to mention there was no Portabello with the Portabello Veggie Burger served tepid out of the freezer. He did report that his haddock sandwich was “delicious.”

It could have been worse if Mike had made the order. “Hey guys, this runner dude says he want a Wedgie!”

Yup, old school and how else can you hold the award ceremony 2-hours after the race and have more than 15 people in attendance? Easy, because 2-hours after the race the kids pony rides were still underway, there was still bounce to the bouncy houses, still smoke billowing from the grills and still beer pouring from the kegs.

Lots of good racing on the women’s side with the BAA’s Kristin Shaw, HFC’s Dana Deingenis, SRR’s Elizabeth Bugbee, and the Whirlaway duo of Katryn Martyn and Heather Spinney in mortal combat for the top 6-places. In 7th is top Master Eileen Cakouris (21:23) of HFC over a resurgent Lisa Williams.

Midway through the Series, CSU’s Kevin Delaney is top Master over the BAA’s McGrane, Pickle Power is top M50 over HFC’s Jason Cakouris, and local resident (living across from Billings Field) John “I own this town!” Barbour ran 17:58 for a dominant M60 win but is just 3-points ahead of Charlie Muse.

Mary “It Girl” McNulty of HFC is tops W50 over Greater Lowell’s Liane Pancoast, while Rhode Island’s Marge Bellisle rules the W60 division along with GBTC pal Claire McManus.

Venerable Pubster Dave Pember moved into the top M70 slot with a divisional win at the Corrib to relegate Rich Paulson to 2nd with NH Wildman Denny LeBlanc of GLRR in 3rd.

(Photo: Elizabeth Bugbee, MickFoto/NERunner)

Great to welcome back All-World W70 participant Jan Holmquist of Whirlaway and Regina Wright of the Marshfield RR (the 1st W70 woman to ever complete the Series.)

And of course, the one & only Larry Cole of the Cape Cod AC stands alone among Octogenarians. Congrats Larry!

We hope everyone had fun at the Corrib (hard not to) and we’ll all reconnect (following our annual Pub Series midsummer intermission) at the Memphis Soul BBQ 5K in Union Square, Somerville on Aug. 13 (Memphis Soul provided by the Shor’ty Billups Band.)

Mighty Meb Boston Marathon Grand Marshal, Marathon Weekend Schedule & Start Times

B.A.A. Announces Meb Keflezighi as 2019 Boston Marathon Grand Marshal

Boston Marathon Schedule of Events Released

2014 Boston Marathon Weekend

www.photorun.NET

BOSTON (1-April) – Today, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced the Grand Marshal for the 123rd Boston Marathon, to be run on Monday, April 15, 2019. Meb Keflezighi, winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon, will serve as Grand Marshal on Patriots’ Day, leading the way for 30,000 participants on their journey from Hopkinton to Boston.

The Boston Marathon is the oldest consecutively run marathon in the world and is annually held on Patriots’ Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. For the 34th year, John Hancock is the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon.

Five years ago, Keflezighi broke the finish tape in memorable fashion with a time of 2:08:37, becoming the first American man since 1983 to win the open division of the Boston Marathon. His victory was especially significant considering it came one year after the tragic acts of April 15, 2013. Keflezighi sported the names of those lost on his bib number as he ran in front towards Boylston Street.

A four-time Olympian, Keflezighi is the only athlete in history to have won both the Boston and New York City Marathons and an Olympic Marathon medal. As Grand Marshal, he will once again lead the field, this time riding in an INFINITI QX50, the official vehicle of the Boston Marathon, from Hopkinton to Boston.

Throughout race week, Keflezighi will also serve as a John Hancock Elite Athlete Ambassador, cheering on participants and making many appearances including at the Boston Marathon Expo, Runner Seminar Series, and at Boston Marathon Fan Fest on Copley Square Park. Keflezighi recently published a book titled 26 Marathons.

“We are proud to welcome back Meb on the five year anniversary of his triumphant victory,” said Tom Grilk, Chief Executive Officer of the B.A.A. “Running to the chants of ‘USA! USA!’, Meb’s victory five years ago was a symbolic moment that transcended sports. Meb helped our entire community celebrate the resilient and determined spirit of Boston, and we look forward to having him back in Boston as Grand Marshal of this year’s race.”

The B.A.A. also today released a detailed schedule of events celebrating Boston Marathon week. Members of the media are encouraged to attend and cover all events.
