Bilharziose en Corse : des chercheurs ont identifié l’origine du parasite

Depuis le printemps 2014, 120 cas de bilharziose ont été diagnostiqués en Corse, tous chez des personnes qui se sont baignées dans une zone particulière de la rivière Cavu. Cette situation endémique d’un parasite sévissant dans des régions tropicales intriguait les chercheurs qui viennent de découvrir l’origine de ce parasite désormais présent en Corse.

L'analyse génétique du parasite a permis d'identifier son origine sénégalaise.

Selon un article publié dans Le Figaro le 17 mai 2016, le premier cas de

bilharziose en Corse a été confirmé au printemps 2014 chez une personne qui s’était baignée dans la rivière Cavu pendant l’été 2013. Depuis, 120 cas ont été recensés. Rappelons que la bilharziose est une maladie tropicale qui touche quelques 200 millions de personnes dans le monde et qu’il existe des formes de la maladie touchant l’intestin, le rectum ou la vessie. En l’occurrence, le schisostome, ver parasite responsable de la maladie traverse la peau au contact de l’eau contaminé, passe dans le sang puis, les vers devenus adultes vivent dans les gros vaisseaux veineux et pondent des oeufs qui traversent différents organes avant d’être excrétés dans les selles ou les urines. Box-office : “Intouchables” dans le Top 5 de tous les temps !

Les “Intouchables” sont extraordinaires : avec encore près d’1,2 millions de spectateurs en neuvième semaine d’exploitation, le long métrage totalise près de 17 millions d’entrées et devient le cinquième plus gros succès de l’histoire au box-office français.

Neuvième semaine consécutive en tête du box-office pour les Intouchables François Cluzet et Omar Sy, qui affolent tous les compteurs. Avec 1,19 millions de spectateurs supplémentaires au compteur, le film-phénomène augmente sa fréquentation de 5% (!), totalise près de 17 millions d’entrées, et devient le cinquième plus gros succès de l’histoire au box-office français. Devant lui ne restent plus que La Grande Vadrouille (17,2 millions), Blanche-Neige et les sept nains (18,3), Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (20,4) et Titanic (20,6). Ce troisième opus est d’ores-et-déjà le plus rentable de la saga devant les 1,4 millions d’entrées d’Alvin et les Chipmunks 2. Les films suivants au classement profitement également de la période de fin d’année : Mission : Impossible – Protocole fantôme totalise près d’1,9 millions d’entrées et dépassera son prédécesseur Mission: Impossible III; Le Chat Potté cumule plus de 3,5 millions de spectateurs et est le film d’animation classique le plus rentable de 2011; Hollywoo approche de la barre des 2 millions de billets vendus, et le Hugo Cabret de Scorsese a dépassé le million d’entrées.

Au rayon des nouveautés hebdomadaires, toutes au-delà du top 10, la comédie Echange standard totalise près de 90 000 entrées, alors que les thrillers Malveillance et Killing Fields attirent respectivement plus de 70 000 et plus de 52 000 spectateurs.

Formula 1 making progress on cost cap but not there yet

Formula 1 has advanced further on its efforts to define an appropriate budget cap level for next season following an online meeting between F1’s Chase Carey and Ross Brawn, FIA president Jean Todt and the teams.

The group came together on Thursday to resume its talks about lowering the cost cap threshold that will be introduced in 2021.

In the face of F1’s economic downturn amid the global coronavirus crisis, teams unanimously agreed to lower the initial $175m ceiling to $150m. However, the sport’s mid-field teams, led by McLaren have lobbied for a further reduction, with the Woking-based outfit pushing for a cut back all the way to $100m.

Thursday’s talks apparently converged towards a $145m limit for 2021 followed by a reduction to $130m in 2022.

However, Ferrari is reportedly the move, arguing that lowering the cost cap threshold below $150m would force it to lay off even more personnel in Maranello, which in turn would pit the Scuderia against Italy’s very restrictive unemployment laws.

The concept of a two-tier cap between Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and F1’s remaining seven teams has been rejected.

However, a handicap system has been tabled: the scheme would limit a team’s aerodynamic development according to its position in the previous year’s championship, with front-running outfits more restricted than those finishing at the lower end of the standings in their use of wind tunnel time and CFD work during the following campaign.

Despite Ferrari’s continued opposition to a budget cap cut back, ongoing talks “were going in the right direction” according to an insider quoted by the BBC.

Another video conference meeting between the parties is scheduled for next week.

H&M collaborates with UK-based illustrator Emma Jayne

H&M is launching a vibrant and playful wildlife collection for kids with
a summer collaboration with UK-based illustrator and pattern designer Emma
Jayne.

The painterly gouache illustrations capture the different
characteristics of animals and greenery in a “fun and quirky way”, explains
the retailer, and are printed onto a range of children’s clothing,
swimwear, accessories and shoes.

Launching mid-April, the kidswear collection features eye-catching
illustrations by Jayne include tropical birds, tigers and marine life,
along with palm trees, fantastic blooms and underwater foliage, on a range
of T-shirts, tops, shorts, dresses, jumpsuits and swimwear. With tie-up
details, drawstring waists, soft ruffles and coordinating separates, as
well as accessories include matching sandals, hats and headbands.

The summery collection of bright green, turquoise and sunset shades such
as coral and yellow, soft black, white and a touch of metallics, has also
been made from woven viscose and sources cotton through the Better Cotton
Initiative, which supports a more sustainable cotton production.

Commenting on the collection, Jayne said in a statement: “I love
creating characters in their surroundings, so it was fun to mix tropical
birds with beautiful flowers and leafy palms or imagine a surf safari
setting.

“With this H&M collaboration, it’s about transporting kids to a brightly
coloured and highly imaginative world that they want to engage in, so I’m
looking forward to seeing how they play in pieces from the collection.”

Sofia Löfstedt, head of kidswear design at H&M, added: “There’s a
wonderful sense of joy in Emma Jayne’s work that captures the imagination
of both children and adults.

“For the H&M collaboration, we chose to build up prints of Emma Jayne’s

Brussels lockdown exit plan leaves capitals in control

It seemed a sort of Sesame Street approach to crisis management. Or this being the EU, Rue Sésame or Sesamstraße: simple, common-sense strategies phrased gently as if for children.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President Charles Michel on Wednesday unveiled a package of recommendations for EU countries as they look ahead toward emerging from the coronavirus lockdown measures. And other than the vague pledge of a trillion-euro economic recovery plan, much of it amounted to urging the sort of good behavior endorsed by the classic children’s TV show.

Don’t forget to wash your hands. “Keep up the strong hygiene practices acquired,” von der Leyen said. “They are very simple but they are very effective.”

Share and be kind to your neighbors. “It is very important that the coordination between neighboring member states is an excellent one,” von der Leyen said. “Good neighbors speak with each other.”

Cooperate. “It is essential to work together,” Michel said, adding: “All this feeds in to a process that will allow us to move forward, not in the same way in all countries, but so we move forward together.”

The “Joint European Roadmap towards lifting COVID-19 containment measures” that the presidents presented on Wednesday is a 14-page Commission document with recommendations based on the most current research. It urges scientifically endorsed best practices, the use of hard data and the latest technology in a continuing bid to limit the spread of the virus and to save lives. The document even contains 17 footnotes linking to source material.

But even as the roadmap sought to encapsulate the very best of Brussels and the EU — calm, cool-headed prudence under pressure; community-minded Continent-wide perspective that sets aside national self-interest in pursuit of the common good — it also showcased how the EU institutions are struggling to stay relevant in an era that demands true executive power.

Struggling to find a role

The European Parliament, its operations largely shuttered since the start of the crisis, is also struggling for a role. On Friday, the Parliament is due to vote on a resolution calling for better coordination of the so-called exit strategy — not exactly a gushing endorsement of how Brussels has asserted itself in trying to synchronize national capitals.

The Commission’s roadmap, ultimately, is a set of unenforceable recommendations. At their news conference on Wednesday, von der Leyen and Michel noted several times that the document had been prepared at the request of the 27 EU countries.

In fact, it was prepared after von der Leyen and Michel recommended that the 27 heads of state and government ask them to prepare just such a plan. But there’s no need to get bogged down in details. Several EU leaders showed just how vital they felt the EU recommendations to be by starting to ease their containment measures without even waiting for the roadmap to be published.

And even as von der Leyen asserted, with all logic on her side, that following the roadmap would help prevent a renewed spike in infections, she simultaneously emphasized that she does not have the authority to tell leaders to end their lockdown policies — nor was she in fact telling them it is time to do so. Each country will make that decision on its own.

“I want to make sure that this is not, it is not a signal that confinement containment measures can be lifted as of now, but it intends to provide a frame[work] for member states’ decisions,” von der Leyen said. “In general, we recommend a gradual approach.”

The gentle tone adopted by von der Leyen and Michel contrasted starkly with the rhetoric in some capitals like Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron has declared he is fighting a “kinetic war,” or in Madrid where Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez gave a news conference on Sunday insisting his country’s battle would continue even as he ended the most restrictive containment measures.

“We cannot lay down our arms, but what we have to do is keep fighting,” Sánchez said. “Now we have already established that we can save thousands of lives with everyone’s effort, and we are not going to stop doing it and doing it better; nothing will stop us until we win this war.”

The vague pledge in Brussels on Wednesday of a trillion-euro recovery plan, to be carried out through an obscure mechanism of the EU’s next long-term financial plan, offered a small glimpse of the Commission aspiring to bring serious muscle to the fight.

But there, too, the leaders’ remarks underscored the limits of their power and authority.

The debate over the next long-term budget, the so-called Multiannual Financial Framework or MFF, had stalled even before the coronavirus crisis hit. And Michel and von der Leyen conceded that they have been largely forced to redraw the entire proposal with a view toward recasting the budget as a souped-up recovery package.

But first, Michel said, he would try to give national leaders a sense of just how much the recovery will cost.

“We don’t know yet how high is the bill we will have to pay,” Michel said. “So at the next European Council, we are going to try and get a strategic vision of the MFF,” he added, “so that we can then invite the Commission to formulate some proposals, which would take into account the current crisis and the repercussions it is going to have.”

It was not exactly the sound of the EU’s big budget gun being locked, loaded and ready to fire.

Then again, the EU has always been more Sesame Street than G.I. Joe or “The Hunger Games.” And perhaps that is for the best.

Von der Leyen on Wednesday put forward three “pre-conditions” for ending containment measures: a sustained, demonstrable reduction in the spread of the virus; documented confirmation of sufficient health system capacity, not just for patients critically ill with COVID-19 but also for those suffering from other serious ailments; and the implementation of comprehensive, reliable testing programs to quickly identify any new flare-ups.

Applying these pre-conditions would “ensure a gradual, consolidated and coordinated” approach, von der Leyen said, adding: “We all know the virus knows no borders. It can only be defeated through international cooperation and coordination.”

Michel, too, sought to underscore the EU’s soft-power strengths. “The heart of Europe is based on solidarity, sharing, to have the necessary resources available so we can react based on common sense … and offer European citizens proper answers,” he said.

Marijuana-Infused Ice Cream Floated In Framingham

FRAMINGHAM, MA — As Framingham has cleared the way for several businesses applying for marijuana licenses to start negotiations with the mayor, one business stands out for its sweet appeal. Cloud Creamery makes marijuana-infused ice cream for hospitals and dispensaries. It was the first marijuana product manufacturer to get the green light from the Marijuana Advisory Team to move forward with negotiations.

The business has plans to move into a location at 115 Herbert Street. But there won’t be a pot-ice cream shop there — the company would only make the treats for outside vendors and would not be permitted to sell their product onsite. The application also says the business is at a unique advantage since it’s the only company on the East Coast producing cannabis-infused ice cream.

Cloud Creamery is branded as a locally sourced edible choice for patients and adult users of marijuana. In its application, it says the strongest group of customers for the company are people suffering from an auto-immune disease as well as those who possess a medical marijuana card.

The financial goal for Cloud Creamery is to earn over $400,000 in their first year of operation, according to their application. While dispensaries will be a chunk of the income, the company plans on getting most of its income from hospice facilities, hospitals and casinos.

David Yusefzadeh is the owner of Cloud Creamery and the sole proprietor with 95% of the equity. Yusefzadeh spent 17 years in the restaurant and hotel industry from Hong Kong to Chicago. He has opened multiple restaurants as well as been involved with two separate start-ups involved in food innovation.

According to the application Cloud Creamery has plans to work with four different dispensary companies in the Boston area as well as two third-party delivery services.

The company still has to negotiate a host community agreement with Mayor Yvonne Spicer before any business can start. Five other businesses are vying to set up shop in the city.

No Proof Gov. Northam Posed For College Blackface Photo: Report

RICHMOND, VA — After a nearly four-month investigation, a law firm hired to determine whether Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam posed in blackface for a medical school yearbook photo can’t determine who was in the picture. The results of the independent investigation by the McGuireWoods firm were announced May 22 by Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Northam became a political pariah on Feb. 1 after a photo on Northam’s page in the 1984 EVMS student yearbook surfaced that showed two people, one dressed in blackface and the other in a white robe and hood. At first the Democratic governor said he was in the photo 35 years ago that a person wearing blackface and anorth wearing a KKK costume. He reversed course the next day, saying that it wasn’t him in the photo, while also saying he once had appeared in blackface during a dance contest, also 35 years ago.

Northam told investigators he doesn’t know how the offensive photo ended up on his yearbook page. The report found no one “with first-hand knowledge of an actual mistake on any page, including any personal page, within the 1984 yearbook” and no evidence that the photo was placed in error, according to the college. The report also identified 10 photographs depicting individuals in blackface based on the law firm’s review of all EVMS yearbooks.

Representatives from the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Virginia’s two U.S. Senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, along with Maryland politicians Gov. Larry Hogan (R-Md.) and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), all called on Northam to “do the right thing” and resign.

But Northam appears to have weathered the political firestorm and protests, once again appearing at functions around the state. Black lawmakers and others have recently praised Northam for ending the suspension of driver’s licenses for drivers with unpaid court fines and costs, and a review into how public schools teach the nation’s racial history, WJLA reports.

The governor said May 22 in a statement that “I am not in the racist and offensive photo that appears under my name in the 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook.”

Northam said his initial apology to accept accountability for the picture’s placement on his yearbook page only caused confusion and pain, rather than helping to clarify the issue. (See Northam’s full statement below.)

Richard V. Homan, MD, president and provost of EVMS and Dean of the School of Medicine, said Wednesday that publication of the photos was a “failure of administrative oversight on the part of EVMS.

“Their publication was hurtful, particularly to the African-American community and to our campus community,” Dr. Homan said. “It should never have happened.”

News of the photo on the governor’s page triggered a review of yearbooks at other schools across the country that turned up hundreds of offensive photos. The scope of the problem is indicative of the unconscious and conscious bias and racism that continue to exist, Homan said in a statement.

Turmoil in Virginia’s political establishment grew after Attorney General Mark Herring said he wore blackface at a college party in 1980, all while Northam fought to keep his job following apologies and then denials that he had once worn the racially demeaning blackface in his college days.

A new and troubling twist to the state’s history of race and politics came when Herring, a Democrat, admitted that he, too, once wore blackface. In this case, he was a 19-year-old college undergraduate attending a party where he dressed as a favorite rap music artist. He said in a statement that he was ashamed of and haunted by the one-time act.

“What I am feeling in no way compares to the betrayal, the shock and the deep pain that Virginians of color may be feeling,” Herring wrote. “Where they have deserved to feel heard, respected, understood and honestly represented, I fear my actions may have contributed to them being forced to revisit and feel a historical pain that has never been allowed to become history.”

Adding to the political crisis, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax finds himself in a me-too moment that has complicated if not dashed his chances of succeeding Northam in the governor’s mansion. A woman has said she was sexually assaulted by Fairfax in 2004, and Fairfax has vehemently denied the claim.

The woman issued a statement identifying herself as Vanessa Tyson and refuted his assertion that the incident at the Democratic National Convention in Boston was consensual. Rather, she said consensual kissing turned into unwanted oral sex.

Les industriels coréens du secteur de la beauté sont stimulés par deux puissants voisins : la Chine et le Japon. Cette stimulation donne le ton de la nouvelle édition du salon MakeUp In Seoul, qui se tiendra les 9 et 10 juin 2016 à Paris.
