Swiss to UK: You’ll miss being at the EU table

Swiss to UK: You’ll miss being at the EU table

Switzerland’s ambassador in Brussels says Britain might have a hard time thinking outside the bloc.

Switzerland has a warning for Brits thinking they can fall back on a special trade deal with the EU if they vote to leave the bloc: You will still have to play by the Union’s rules.

Just like the British Euroskeptics who rail against the arrival of EU migrants in the U.K., the Swiss have also called for an immigration quota to restrict the number of EU citizens who can live in their country. But they also have a trade relationship with the EU that requires they respect the free movement of people.

Supporters of a British Out vote the June 23 referendum have suggested that the U.K. could forge a similar deal that would continue to give them access to the internal market even after Britain left the EU. Switzerland’s EU ambassador, Roberto Balzaretti, said Tuesday that it won’t be that easy.

“What they should know is the situation of Switzerland, being a member state is much more comfortable,” Balzaretti said during a dinner with reporters at his residence. “We don’t decide anything we apply.”

“Would Great Britain accept that they have to apply more or less the same rules? Maybe they can live with that,” he added.

The migration issue has long been controversial in Switzerland. More than 800,000 EU citizens have moved to the country in the past decade, and now make up 16 percent of its population of 8 million.

In February 2014, the Swiss people voted in a referendum for a measure that would cap the immigration of EU citizens to Switzerland. Under the provision, the Swiss have a three-year time limit to implement that quota, but their issue has been sidelined by the European Commission because of its political sensitivity during the Brexit debate.

“We will have to wait until June of this year because of this U.K. issue, because any concession would be pushed by the Out campaign as a reason to leave. ‘Look at the Swiss,’ they will say,” Balzaretti said, referring to advice he said Switzerland had received from the Commission.

Balzaretti added that if the Brits decide to leave the EU, the Swiss quota deal is dead in the water, as the EU will be occupied with the British issue.

“‘If the Brits leave, there is not time for you,’ they said,” he added.

Balzaretti said the Swiss also suffer because they have no say in other major policy decisions that affect them, such as the EU’s controversial migrant deal with Turkey. Under that proposed framework, the EU would lift visa restrictions on Turks traveling to Europe — a provision Switzerland, as a member of the Schengen zone, would have to comply with but cannot contest.

“The issue with Turkey, we haven’t seen that deal because we’re not at the table,” he said. “No one asked us what we think. We won’t have an agreement with Turkey.”

A majority of Swiss are opposed to EU membership, even if it would offer them a seat at the negotiating table. According to Balzaretti, Swiss citizens would like to see the Brits vote to leave because it would validate their own decision to stay out of the EU — and deal a political blow to the bloc.

“The majority of the Swiss would be happy for Great Britain to leave because they would see it as the end of the EU,” he said. “People are saying listen, we’re doing everything we want them to do, but they’re just not listening.”

He added, “You talk about Europe and you almost always add the word crisis.”

Juncker: ‘Some established German politicians make AfD acceptable’

Juncker also warned of end of Schengen if Germany closes borders.

By

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker accused German politicians in established parties of encouraging the far-right Alternative for Germany party, in an interview published Wednesday evening.

Juncker told German newspaper Handelsblatt he did not want to name anyone in particular, but “there are politicians in German parties, who use the same vocabulary and cultivate the same xenophobic resentment as the [Alternative for Germany] AfD.”

Such politicians should not be surprised if people then prefer to vote for the original, namely, the AfD, he said.

On the AfD’s success in past regional elections, Juncker said that “in an established democracy like in Germany there are temporary deviations from the normality.” For him, the AfD success was “a slip” and a sign of difficult times.

Ahead of the European summit on migration, Juncker also warned that if Germany closes its borders, a domino effect will take place. “Then, Schengen will slowly but surely be carried to the grave.” In the end, that will make the European single market as well as the euro senseless, he added.

Teams shuffle logistics amid restrictions and coronavirus threat

Several Formula 1 teams are in the process of tweaking their travel plans for the opening races of the world championship as they deal with the global spreading of the coronavirus.

Next month’s opening Australian and Bahrain Grands Prix are set to go ahead as scheduled, while Vietnam GP organisers have so far not altered their plans for the inaugural event in Hanoi despite the presence of the novel virus in the country.

However, the cluster of cases that appeared recently in northern Italy and the overall spreading of the novel virus has compelled several Asian countries to impose travel restrictions on those originating from the country.

Carey: Vietnam GP still a go-ahead amid coronavirus threat

The new limitations have disrupted the logistics for Ferrari and Scuderia AlphaTauri, who have also taken precautionary measures at their bases to protect staff against the virus outbreak.

“Coronavirus is a really serious story from AlphaTauri’s side,” explained team boss Franz Tost on Thursday in Barcelona.

“We instructed all the employees to behave in a special manner, we reduced the travelling dramatically, people coming from the red zones in Italy should stay at home.

“We do not want that they come to the factory, suppliers should also not visit us in the factory. We shall see what happens with the races in Melbourne and Bahrain.”

But travel restrictions are also wreaking havoc on the team’s logistics and travel plans for the first three races of the year.

“It’s changing all the time from the logistics side,” added Tost.

“We have to change all the flights because we are not allowed to go anymore via Singapore or Hong Kong. There’s a lot of work in front of us.”

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto also admitted that the outbreak is a big “concern”

“Certainly, we have to make sure that we are acting properly,” he said.

“Some of the teams, some of the people have been postponed on the flight, just making sure that we were properly addressing all the concerns.”

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams also chimed in on the various travel restrictions throwing a spanner in the teams’ works.

“There are certainly issues that we’re facing around travel to Melbourne, what happens with Vietnam, travel to Bahrain, et cetera,” said Williams. “So I think it’s a challenge for everybody.

“The safety of our team is the most important thing. When it comes to travel, we will take direction from the World Health Organisation and the advice they’re posting on an hour by hour basis.”

Joy Behar: Trump 'Doesn't Need a Dog' — He Has GOP Senators | Breitbart

On Friday’s broadcast of ABC’s “The View,” co-host Joy Behar said President Donald Trump did not need a dog because he had Republican senators.

After playing a clip of Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) calling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) “dumb,” Behar said, “It’s just so annoying, you know? And I often think, why doesn’t Trump have a dog? He doesn’t need one? He’s got all these guys nipping.”

Doing a begging dog impression, Behar said, “You know, that ha ha ha. Like that. Right? He doesn’t need a dog.”

Guest-host Ana Navarro said, “I’m going to stand up for dogs. As a new dog owner, I can tell you, dogs have some dignity.”

After playing clips of Jeff Sessions praising Trump and Trump attacking Sessions, Behar said, “Get the leash.”

EU gives Greece three months to fix its borders

If Athens fails, border controls could be extended for up to two years.

EU countries will be able to prolong border controls for up to two years unless Greece fixes “serious deficiencies” in its migration system, national governments resolved Friday.

Member states voted to adopt 50 recommendations for Greece to address “as a matter of priority and urgency” to tackle shortcomings in how it processes migrants.

A European Commission assessment on January 27 found Greece had “serious deficiencies” in ensuring migrants arriving from Turkey and across the Aegean Sea were properly registered.

Greece now has one month to make an action plan to address the failings and three months within which to report on its implementation. Athens voted against the decision, and Bulgaria and Cyprus abstained.

If Greece falls short, the European Commission and Council can authorize the extension of internal border controls adopted by countries such as Germany and Austria, which are due to expire in May, for a maximum of up to two years.

The Schengen Borders Code allows for border controls in the usually passport-free zone when there is “a serious threat to public policy or internal security.”

“The very large number of arrivals is such that the external border controls of any member state would be placed under severe pressure,” the Council said in a press release. “The recommendation also notes that Greece has taken a number of measures to deal with the situation, but that given the scale of the situation, further efforts are needed.”

Greece has been under pressure for months to clamp down on migrants arriving on its shores, with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico saying it should be forced out of Schengen altogether.

However, “the point [of Friday’s vote] is not locking Greece out of Schengen,” a senior EU official said. “The point is if the external border is not being controlled, it allows member states to keep the controls that are in place on their own internal borders.”

Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European commissioner for migration and home affairs, told POLITICO on January 28 that “no country is being dropped” from Schengen.

Kanye West Sunday Service Saw '1,000 People' Commit Their Lives to Christ

Curvine Brewington, a pastor at Crossroads Church in Lafayette, praised Kanye West over the weekend for hosting his weekly Sunday Service, where the church leader said more than a 1,000 attendees dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ.

“Tonight, worship was lifted, the name of Christ was exalted, the Word of God was preached, a multitude prayed together, the Gospel was clearly proclaimed, and an opportunity to respond was given,” Pastor Brewington explained in an Instagram post. “In a crowd of 6,000, people from all walks of life, all ages, and all races, I witnessed over 1,000 people respond to The Gospel by raising their hands to accept Jesus as their Lord & Savior!”

A livestream of the moving service was posted online and shows West, flanked by a choir, perform a set of spiritual hymns and a slew of songs from his new album Jesus Is King.

This latest addition of West’s Sunday Service comes on the heels of his 11-track Gospel album debuting number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart, marking the Grammy-winner’s ninth consecutive number one debut.

Kanye West made headlines throughout the week while promoting the record. He called out cancel culture, said his support for President Donald Trump was “God’s practical joke to liberals,” and ripped the Democratic Party — “Democrats had us voting for Democrats with food stamps for years. What are you talking about guns in the 80s, taking the father’s out the home, Plan B, lowering our votes, making us abort children.”

West’s influence on the culture and his music-driven commitment to Christianity is palpable. Indeed, the American Bible Society (ABS) is set to hand out 1,000 free Bibles to those interested in Christianity, launching an initiative called “Bibles for Kanye Fans.”
