Chadwick retains development spot at Williams for 2020

Williams F1 has confirmed that W Series champion Jamie Chadwick will stay with the team as their development driver in 2020.

The 21-year-old from Bath in Somerset also keeps her place in the Williams Racing Driver Academy for the season.

The announcement means that she will increase her simulator programme work, as well as continuing to be fully immersed with the team both trackside as well as back in the factory at Grove.

She will attend several Grands Prix this year, as well as supporting the team in media and marketing activities.

  • Chadwick inspired by Hamilton but F1 ‘further away’

“I am delighted to confirm that Jamie Chadwick will continue her work in the Williams Racing Driver Academy this year,” said Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams in a team press released issued on Tuesday morning.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Jamie develop, and excel, both with the team and her time racing in W Series,” Williams continued.

“Jamie has done an excellent job promoting women in motorsport and we are extremely proud of the work she has done.”

As well as claiming the inaugural W Series title, Chadwick was also part of a class winning team at the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race in Germany.

Prior to that she had already racked up a number of historic firsts for a female racing driver, including clinching the 2015 British GT GT4 title, winning a race in the 2018 British Formula 3 championship, and coming top in the 2018/19 MRF Winter Series.

For Chadwick, the ultimate dream remains breaking into Formula 1, and this week’s news takes her another step closer to that goal.

“It has been a fantastic opportunity working with the team in my role as development driver,” she said.

“The time spent in the simulator has been invaluable and I have enjoyed every moment, immersing myself within the team,” Chadwick added.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Williams this year!”

British teen sentenced over gang rape claim in Cyprus resort

The 19-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at a district court in Paralimni on Tuesday. Lawyer Lewis Power told reporters outside the court that the sentence would be suspended for three years.

###

The woman had previously been found guilty on a single charge of causing public mischief, in a high-profile case that has been closely followed by women’s rights activists.

###

She claimed she was attacked by 12 Israeli tourists on July 17 at the Pambos Napa Rocks hotel in the resort of Ayia Napa, where she was staying. But 10 days later the woman retracted her statement, and police arrested her.

###

Another one of the woman’s lawyers, Michael Polak, from the advocacy group Justice Abroad, previously told CNN that she had been coerced into making the statement, had been denied legal representation, and was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

###

Her legal team told reporters outside the court Tuesday that she would be returning home to Britain later that day. They will be challenging her conviction, taking it to the Supreme Court of Cyprus and all the way to the European Court of Human Rights if necessary, the UK’s PA Media news agency reported.

###

It added that during sentencing, Judge Michalis Papathanasiou told the court: “All the evidence shows that she had lied and prevented the police from doing other serious jobs.”

###

The judge added that the woman’s “psychological state, her youth, that she has been away from her family, her friends and academic studies this year” had led him to “give her a second chance” and suspend the sentence for three years.

###

‘We believe you’

###

The woman spent more than a month in prison before being granted bail. Her passport was retained, and she has not been able to leave the country until now.

###

“Whilst we welcome the fact that the sentence imposed today allows her to go home, we strongly contest the conviction and the fight for her innocence will go on regardless,” said the woman’s lawyer, Lewis Power, on leaving the court, PA reported.

###

“We say and will maintain that this young girl was stripped both of her dignity and her basic human rights.”

###

The case has been closely followed by rights activists, who say it has been mishandled. Dozens of supporters, many having traveled from Israel, applauded the woman and her mother on leaving the court.

###

They held placards which said “we believe you” and “you are not alone.” Some wore white scarves over their faces portraying lips sewn together.

###

In the UK, opposition Labour MP Lisa Nandy, who is also a candidate for party leader, tweeted that: “The message this case sends to victims is that they will become the accused if they report rape.”

###

None of the Israeli youths involved were called to give evidence in the case.

###

Nir Yaslovitzh, a lawyer representing them, previously told CNN: “I applaud the court’s decision to convict the girl.”

###

“I hope that the court will find it appropriate to aggravate the punishment imposed on the girl, who refuses to this day to take responsibility for the horrible act she has done against the boys.”

First Look: Daniel Fletcher’s debut for Fiorucci

Italian brand Fiorucci has unveiled the debut collection from its new
menswear artistic director, British designer Daniel Fletcher with
appointments during London Fashion Week Men’s.

The starting point for the autumn/winter 2020 collection for Fletcher
began with a visit to the Italian labels archive, explained the show notes,
where the designer “unearthed pieces that spoke of the brand’s disco past”
with original sketches, denim handpainted by Keith Haring and personal
artefacts belonging to Elio Fiorucci.

“I think it’s every designer’s dream to go into a brand with an archive
this rich and be able to use it to create something new,” explained
Fletcher on his new appointment. “Fiorucci is not just about fashion,
it’s about music and art and there’s a spirit that is unlike any other
brand that makes it so special.”

Fletcher has combined these archival tributes with inspiration from New
York nightlife in the 1970s and London’s club scene, to create what the
label describes as a “hedonistic melting pot of sex, music and expression”
with a “touch of Italian flare”.

Fiorucci unveils debut collection from new menswear artistic director,
Daniel Fletcher

For autumn/winter 2020, these influences find themselves worked over
core cotton and denim pieces, running alongside racing overalls reworked
into a contemporary silhouette. Satin has also become a key motif,
with Fletcher inspired by that disco heritage, worked the fabric into the
collection with bomber jackets and appliquéd ‘bang’ motif shirts.

Fletcher added: “For me, Fiorucci is a party brand and I wanted to
capture some of that magic. This mix of silhouette, colour palette and
references shouldn’t necessarily work together but somehow do in a
strange, wonderful melting pot that frames my first collection for
Fiorucci.”

The menswear collection introduces tailoring for the first time with
flared wool trousers, a mustard tuxedo jacket and checked overcoats, as the
luxury label looks to grow its menswear category and international
appeal.

There is also a touch of Fletcher’s own aesthetic, with the British
designer showcasing his expertise with knitwear to the collection through
zebra tanks and lambswool crewnecks, which have been styled with vinyl
trousers and printed silk shirts.

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley says lessons have been learnt from issues such as taxi incident which have marred his season so far

The Chelsea midfielder admitted getting caught photographed in unsavoury situations has been a ‘big lesson’.

Barkley made his first appearance in three months on Sunday, as the Blues advanced to the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

It’s been a rollercoaster season for the 26-year-old already, who has irked boss Frank Lampard on several occasions.

Barkley was snapped dancing shirtless in a Dubai nightclub in the summer which although it didn’t look good – Chelsea weren’t massively concerned because he was on holiday.

The England midfielder was then caught on camera being escorted to a cashpoint by two police officers in September withdrawing money to pay a taxi driver after a late night row over spilled chips.

Blues chiefs were incensed, and Barkley has acknowledged that embarrassing incident is one that shouldn’t have occurred, vowing to curb his partying lifestyle.

“It is that 10 seconds when you are not looking like a professional when you have got to let your hair down but then you can’t forget about your job,” he explained.

“It was unfortunate of me to get caught in that position and it will happen many times to players because you know what phones are like nowadays. I am just keeping my head down and it won’t happen again.

“It’s a big lesson. You have got to be aware of your surroundings when you let your hair down for any player out there.

You have just got to be aware of what’s around you. It is just more about being with the right company and in private.”

He added: “When you play in the Premier League, you are a high profile player, so it is about keeping low-key and switched on.

“It is just nowadays that you have to be careful because everyone is wanting to catch you out.

“When you are on holiday or away you need the right people around you.

“I have made that mistake and it won’t happen again but I am sure it will happen to young players in the future.

“We all make mistakes but it is about being aware.”

Celtic’s Ryan Christie handed two-match ban for testicle grab on Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos

Christie escaped with only a free-kick against him after grabbing the Colombian in the groin area with his hand during Rangers’ 2-1 win at Celtic Park on December 29.

But he was subsequently charged with violent conduct by the Scottish Football Association and a fast-track tribunal found him guilty.

The 24-year-old had already been booked by referee Kevin Clancy for a foul on Morelos when he appeared to grab the striker after he had been nutmegged by the Colombian.

Christie will miss Celtic’s William Hill Scottish Cup clash with Partick Thistle on January 18 along with their Ladbrokes Premiership encounter at Kilmarnock four days later.

The ban triggers an extra one-match suspension because it is his second red-card offence of the season – he was sent off against Livingston – so he will also sit out the visit of Ross County on January 25.

The Scotland international is recovering from groin surgery and was rated ‘touch and go’ by assistant manager John Kennedy for the trip to Maryhill.
