Ajax star Donny Van de Beek set to join Real Madrid this summer despite Manchester United interest

The Netherlands international drew interest from a number of top European clubs for his brilliant displays in Ajax’s superb run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

And he has continued his red-hot form this campaign, having netted six goals and four assists in 16 league matches for the Eredivisie champions.

Real are on the hunt for creative midfielder as they seek a long-term replacement for Luka Modric, and it is believed Zinedine Zidane has earmarked the 22-year-old as the man to succeed the Ballon d’Or winner.

According to Marca, a deal has been agreed between the clubs for Van de Beek to move to the Bernabeu, though he will not arrive until the summer.

Sunderland delete controversial tweet welcoming signing of former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty

The Northern Ireland forward, 32, signed a deal until the end of the season with the League One promotion hopefuls on Friday.

And he was officially unveiled on Monday, giving his first interview to the club website.

Sunderland originally tweeted: “He’s seven foot and he plays the flute.”

The lyrics came from a song that was chanted during Lafferty’s time at Rangers and references loyalist flute bands in Northern Ireland.

Sunderland hastily deleted the post, and a club spokesman insisted no offence was intended, saying: “It was written in all innocence by someone unaware of how it could be interpreted.”

Lafferty, who had two spells at Rangers, will be available for selection for Sunderland’s trip to MK Dons on Saturday.

The Black Cats are on a six-game unbeaten run and occupy the final play-off spot.

Lafferty told Sunderland’s official club website: “I am excited to sign for Sunderland because it is probably the biggest club I have played for in England.

Manchester United fan says Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is the greatest defender the game has ever seen

He has been a regular at Bayer Leverkusen during the past four seasons – and was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Year last term after scoring a remarkable 17 league goals.

The 20-year-old already has 126 first team appearances for Leverkusen since making his debut in 2016, and he’s also won seven full international caps for Germany.

And Mundo Deportivo reports that Liverpool are determined to land Havertz ahead of a host of other interested clubs.

To capture him, though, the Reds would have to spend in excess of £100million, which would smash the £75m club-record fee they spent on Virgil van Dijk.

Havertz could be considered as a replacement for Adam Lallana, who is out of contract at the end of the season, although the England international’s deal has an option for a further year.

Havertz has been at Leverkusen since the age of 11 but it’s understood numerous European clubs are monitoring him.

“I am honest, at some point the next step must come for me,” Havertz told Bild last year. “But I’m not going to worry about when exactly that will happen.

“What counts now is Bayer Leverkusen. We still have a lot to do. Leverkusen very quickly signalled that they wanted to keep me.

Five Serie A players who could join Premier League in January with Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton all linked

The Italian league has provided star names like Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly and Patrick Viera.

But in more recent times we have seen players like Mario Balotelli, Juan Cudrado and Stefan Jovetic fail to leave a lasting impact.

January could see more Serie A players move to the Premier League with several players already linked.

Here at talkSPORT.com, we have taken a look at five players who could make the move during the transfer window.

Tottenham’s new signing Gedson Fernandes is a ‘Jose Mourinho version’ of Harry Winks, says Adrian Durham

Tottenham completed the 18-month loan signing, with an option to buy, of Fernandes from Benfica.

It raises questions about how Mourinho will fit all his midfield players into his team and whether Winks will warrant a place.

Durham said: “Gedson Fernandes is, not a similar type of player, but will play in a similar position and is actually more a Mourinho type player.

“He’s actually a Mourinho version of Harry Winks, that’s how I see it. He’s not going to get him in and not play him, is he?

“He seems to be disillusioned with Ndombele and I’m not quite sure Mourinho is convinced about Harry Winks, which is why Fernandes has come in, in my opinion.

“Defensively, I think he’s still trying to get his defence right but I think in front of his defence he needs the right players as well and to me it’s that physical presence.

“Gedson Fernandes, when fit, is going to be a starter for Tottenham Hotspur. That’s the way I see it.

“It’s whether there’s room in that midfield for Harry Winks alongside him. And if there isn’t, what does that mean for Winks in terms of England and Euro 2020 because a few months away there is a massive tournament with a lot of games on home soil.”

Durham also questioned whether Winks had the quality to play in a team like Tottenham.

Jose Mourinho hints injured Harry Kane could miss England’s Euro 2020 campaign

The 26-year-old underwent surgery on a hamstring injury on Saturday after rupturing a tendon in Spurs’ New Year’s Day defeat at Southampton.

He is expected to return to first-team training in April, but Mourinho’s recent comments have put a three-month comeback in doubt.

When asked for an update on Kane’s return on Monday, Mourinho suggested there could be some doubt surrounding his availability for Euro 2020.

The Tottenham manager said: “News on Harry we don’t have and if you ask me every time we come here the answer will be the same.

“We expect him to be out until, I don’t know, mid-April, end of April, May, next season I don’t know.

“I have no updates to give on Harry.”

Anthony Limbrick: The Australian Mauricio Pochettino disciple assisting Ian Holloway at Grimsby who helped develop Luke Shaw

The 47-year-old took great pride in helping nurture young players during his stints at both Southampton and most recently Spurs.

One man who has the same ideology as Pochettino, and whom benefited hugely from working with the Argentine at St Mary’s, is Grimsby no.2 Anthony Limbrick.

Born in Tasmania, Limbrick originally made the move to the UK to forge a professional playing career.

However, it became apparent that going down that route was an unlikely proposition after suffering a serious leg break in his late teens.

Irrespective of that injury setback he believes he wasn’t up to the required standard to make it to the big time anyway. He had his chance, and accepts it just didn’t work out.

He refused to be too down and despite being advised to move back to Australia after failing to make it as a professional he ignored those suggestions.

From that day he vowed to build a career for himself within coaching, and it’s been a rather colourful journey since then.

At the age of just 19, he first became a youth team coach at Boreham Wood in 2007, eventually advancing on to a first-team coach role at Wingate & Finchley from 2007 to 2010.

It was then that Limbrick joined Saints as their youth coach, asserting authority over the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 age groups.

He first came across Pochettino at Saints. The pair struck up a close relationship, with Limbrick coaching his youngest son, Maurizio.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT.com, the 42-year-old, who also credits Nigel Adkins for aiding his development, outlined the methods Pochettino instilled in him which still remain present this day.

“I managed to get closer to Mauricio as I had a good relationship with his son. Watching his training sessions and the individual work he did with players was an excellent learning curve for me,” he explained.

“The tempo and intensity the team trained at was something I had never seen before in my life. It was unbelievable.

“Ever since then I’ve implemented Mauricio’s work in every training session I conduct.

“The main premise for me is working harder in training than you do in the game. It’s about a lot of pressing, work rate and winning the ball back. Mauricio’s advice was invaluable.”

A spell working as an academy coach at West Ham followed, before Limbrick took his first footsteps into management with Woking in 2017.

The Australian made a bright start to his tenure, while they also sprang a surprise in the FA Cup second round – beating then League One side Bury.

However, after winning just three of his last 26 matches at the helm, the National League side terminated his contract in April 2018.

Limbrick returned to the game in June 2018, with Grimsby appointing him as assistant to promising boss Michael Jolley.

A second opportunity in the hotseat, albeit on an interim basis, then presented itself earlier this season, during which Limbrick says he ‘laid the foundations’ for the new man to come in and flourish.

That man is none other than talkSPORT favourite Ian Holloway, with Limbrick working alongside the former QPR and Blackpool boss as his number two.

And the Mariners assistant boss says ‘Ollie’ has brought a new lease of life and enthusiasm into a Grimsby side which are unbeaten in their last five league games.

So what is the biggest thing Limbrick has taken from a man who has taken charge of over 950 games across a 20-plus-year career in the dugout?

“He’s huge on the man management side, more so than anyone else I’ve ever encountered in the game,” he added.

“He has an uncanny knack of getting everyone on side, whether that be people in the office, the kit man or the guys in the canteen who do our lunch for us.

“Everyone has got to work together and pull in the right direction. He is all about creating a happy and healthy environment for everyone to thrive in.

He continued: “Ian has been very impressed with the group. Their attitude has been spot on in training and on match days.

“The players just want honesty and that’s certainly what he’s giving them at the moment.

“He’s certainly a character. He’s brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the table.

“He say it how it is and there’s certain things he expects and the players have to buy into that. Ian has made that crystal clear.

“He’s been on the front foot getting those messages across and that’s good for the players as they know where they stand.

“Making everyone inclusive and working towards that end goal is vitally important if you are going to be successful in anything you do in life.”

U.S. teenager Reyna promoted to senior Borussia Dortmund squad

The youngster has been rewarded for a string of impressive performances for the club’s academy

United States youth international Giovanni Reyna has been promoted to the Borussia Dortmund senior squad just six months after joining the club’s academy.

The 17-year-old moved to Germany from MLS side New York City FC last summer and initially joined up with the club’s under-19 squad, though he did join the senior squad on their pre-season tour of the United States.

The attacking midfielder, son of former American internationals Claudio Reyna and Danielle Egan Reyna, impressed with the youth team, scoring eight goals and registering a further eight assists in 16 appearances during the first half of the season.

His early performances were enough to see him included in Dortmund’s 31-man Champions League squad. He was also named in the matchday squad for their Bundesliga clash with Dusseldorf at the start of last month, though he failed to make it off the bench in a 5-0 win.

Reyna was then part of Lucian Favre’s travelling Dortmund squad for their winter training camp in Marbella, where he scored one goal and set up another in a 4-2 friendly win over Feyenoord last week.

Those displays have seen the youngster rewarded with a permanent promotion to the senior side, though he will also still be eligible to play for the under-19s.

Speaking about Reyna’s promotion, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said: ”He presented himself well in Marbella, that’s why we want to put him on a much higher level at training.

“We want to develop him to a full-fledged player of Borussia Dortmund.”

The teenager could make his senior debut against Augsburg when the Bundesliga resumes after the winter break this weekend.

Reyna has established himself as one of the most talented prospects to emerge from the United States youth squads in recent years.

He was able to make the move to Europe having secured a Portuguese passport through Claudio’s mother Maria.

By moving to BVB he is following the footsteps of United States international Christian Pulisic, who also joined the club at the age of 16 in 2015 before moving to Chelsea last summer for £58 million ($73m).
