Kubica: ‘F1 return closed most important chapter in my life’

Robert Kubica’s miraculous return to F1 didn’t yield the results he expected, but it did help the Pole close “the most important chapter” in his life.

Kubica returned to the fray after an 8-year forced hiatus from the sport brought about by the traumatic rally accident that stopped his career in F1 dead in its tracks.

Hard work, determination and sheer grit allowed him to contend for a race seat which Williams supplied. But the British outfit’s dismal form in 2019 left Kubica and teammate George Russell lingering all season long at the back of the grid.

Kubica allegedly close to Alfa Romeo deal for 2020

Kubica’s personal track record also suffered a blow as Russell outqualified the Pole 21-0. Sill, the 34-year-old looks back on his campaign and botched renaissance through a positive prism.

“I was kind of split, honestly, and I think by coming back to Formula 1 I closed a chapter, which was probably the most important one from my life,” said Kubica.

“Looking where I was, looking at the period I went through with the circumstances of what happened and what the consequence was of the accident in 2011.

“Then of course, once you are back in F1, you reopen or continue the chapter which is Formula 1 which is probably a difficult one to talk about because the season has been very complicated.

“You live for achieving and coming back to Formula 1 and want to do good in races and want to deliver, you want to be racing, and this is something which I think I missed most this year.”

Asked whether his believed his return was “worth it”, Kubica stated that the mere achievement of racing once again in F1 surpassed the importance of the results.

“I’m a person who is living for challenges, which is living for trying to achieve the targets and trying to achieve what your path is,” he said.

“If I arrive after many years being away from the sport to try to be back in F1, it means that this was my objective.

“I did want to try to see if I was able to drive and I am able to be back, although I have been away for a long time and I have limitations. If I have to answer if it was worth it, I say yes.”

Every Championship club’s best signing of the decade, including Adel Taarabt, Bradley Dack and Jarrod Bowen

The 2019/20 campaign has seen West Brom and Leeds firmly cement their position as promotion favourites, with third-placed Sheffield Wednesday eight points off the top two as things stand.

The division remains tight though, with just a seven-point gap between Wednesday and 14th-placed QPR as we approach the midway point of the season.

Are Liverpool the new Invincibles? Jurgen Klopp’s side look unstoppable, says Stuart Pearce

The Reds have won 17 of their 18 league matches to date and drawn the other, to sit 13 points clear in first place.

While those involved with the Anfield club may be playing down Liverpool’s chances of winning their first ever Premier League title, many consider the title race done and dusted.

Some bookies have already paid out on Liverpool securing the trophy, and it would take the biggest collapse in sporting history for them to not win the Premier League considering their current position.

So the question is not ‘can they win it?’ – it is ‘can Liverpool win the Premier League undefeated?’

Only twice before have teams finished an English top flight season without losing a match; Preston did it in the first ever Football League season in 1888/89, and Arsenal repeated the feat in 2003/04.

Both teams are referred to as the Invincibles – but can Liverpool join that exclusive club at the end of this campaign?

Borussia Dortmund ‘ready to sell Jadon Sancho’ after beating Manchester United to Erling Haaland signing

Dortmund beat United and a host of top European clubs to the surprise signing of Haaland on Sunday, with the 19-year-old Norwegian striker signing a four-and-a-half year deal.

It is claimed a number of teams were prepared to pay the youngster’s relatively cheap £17.1 million release clause, and Man United had put the biggest contract on the table.

But Haaland opted for Dortmund as he believes he has the best chance to continue his progression with the German side.

Other claims suggest United pulled out of the running for the striker over frustrations with his agent, Mino Raiola.

But it appears any disappointment over the failed transfer could be short-lived, as Haaland’s arrival has cast fresh doubt on Sancho’s future at the Westfalenstadion.

According to The Times, Dortmund are now ready to listen to offers for the England winger ahead of the summer transfer window.

Sancho’s contract is due to expire in 2022 and Dortmund are apparently aware the teenager wants to return to the Premier League, with plenty of interested suitors.

And the report claims Dortmund may want to cash in on the forward next summer, putting a £100million price tag on the Englishman.

United have been linked with a strong interest in the 19-year-old, as have his former club Manchester City, who sold him to Germany for just £8m in 2017.

Premier League leaders Liverpool have been linked with an interest, too, with Jurgen Klopp said to be an admirer of the winger.

But Real Madrid and Barcelona are also rumoured to be keen, and The Times claim Sancho is ‘intrigued’ by the prospect of a possible move to Spain.

Sancho has been in fine form this season, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists in 24 games for Dortmund.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil can’t work together, new Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta warned

The Gunners have shown promising signs under Arteta despite taking just a point from two games and were unlucky to lose against Chelsea on Sunday as errors cost them.
