Israel and Hamas Agree to New 72 Hour Ceasefire

Update:

Israel has followed Hamas in agreeing to the Egypt-brokered 72 hour ceasefire, which comes into affect at 2100 GMT on Sunday evening.

Earlier:

The Palestinian delegate on Sunday accepted a second 72-hour ceasefire proposal brokered by Egypt, despite the news that airstrikes continued to hammer the closed-off territory.

According to reports, attacks by Israeli forces killed three people in Gaza on Sunday, including a woman and a 14-year-old boy. Also, Ma’an News reports that the IDF shot and killed a 12-year-old boy near Hebron in the West Bank while the troops were escorting Israeli engineers into a neighborhood known as Nabat al-Haffara for “unknown reasons.”

“We are here to look for an agreement. We cannot have an agreement without talks, so we accepted an Egyptian proposal to have a cease-fire for 72 hours in order to resume the talks,” said a Palestinian negotiator. There was no immediate Israeli response.

Earlier, Hamas’s deputy chairman and lead negotiator, Moussa Abu Marzouk, told the Guardian’s Patrick Kingsley that the Palestinian delegation was contemplating abandoning talks because Israel has never formally addressed the Palestinians demands, namely to end the 8-year blockade of the Gaza Strip.

However, according to the Associated Press, the Palestinian delegation may now be “softening” their demands.

“We might not get everything we want, particularly on freedom of movement. But we believe the Israelis and the world have gotten the point that Gazans should live normally and things should be much better than today,” said one negotiator.

Reporting on his conversation with Marzouk, Kingsley wrote:

Marzouk said the concession Hamas most wanted from Israel was the right to build a port and airport in Gaza, facilities promised to the Palestinians under the Oslo peace deal. In return, he said Hamas had no problem with relinquishing power to a Palestinian Authority-led unity government that “should control everything in Gaza”, including its border crossings.

But he said Hamas would not agree to disarm while the Gaza strip was still occupied. “Disarming is out of the question. There is no discussion. It’s not on the negotiation table. There is no force that can take away from the Palestinian resistance their right to resistance, nor their tools to resist.”

Marzouk also denied that Hamas should down its arms in order to protect innocent lives in Gaza, saying that it was Israel’s responsibility to stop bombing civilians. He also denied that Hamas fighters endanger civilians by firing rockets from civilian areas.

“I cannot understand how [Hamas’s critics] always blame the weak, the party that gets attacked. Who started the battle? … Did Israel really have to kill all this number in order to get their targets? To demolish all these houses in order to achieve their goals? The ones who should be blamed are the Israelis.”

Blaming Hamas’s rockets for the ongoing military offensive, Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, said Sunday that Israel refuses to negotiate “under fire.”

“At no stage did we declare [Israel’s military offensive] was over,” Netanyahu continued. “The operation will continue until its objective – the restoration of quiet over a protracted period – is achieved. I said at the beginning and throughout the operation – it will take time, and stamina is required.”

Unai Emery SACKED: Arsenal legends Ray Parlour and Perry Groves react to Gunners announcement – ‘Something had to be done’

Emery was given the boot on Friday morning after the Gunners lost 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League to make it SEVEN games without a win.

Thursday night’s result saw Emery achieve something Arsene Wenger never did during his 22 years at the helm – this is Arsenal’s worst run of results since 1992 when George Graham was manager.

Former Gunners stars Parlour and Groves were in the talkSPORT studios on Friday when the news of Emery’s departure was announced.

And they both agreed it was coming.

“I’m not surprised, it was the last straw last night,” Parlour told Jim White.

“The boos at the end, the performance… it’s been coming. We go to most of the games and you could sense the crowd turning on the manager.

“Players don’t look like they know what their jobs are, they don’t know how to defend.”

Groves says the manager completely lost the dressing room, and their recent results gave the board no choice.

Man City battle back from behind to claim invaluable victory over Chelsea

All the goals in an open contest at the Etihad Stadium came in the first half as the champions responded to N’Golo Kante’s early strike with goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez.

Raheem Sterling thought he had added a late third for City but his injury-time strike was ruled out for offside in a very tight VAR call.

Sergio Aguero hit the woodwork before the break but the game ended with concern for City’s record goalscorer after he hobbled off 13 minutes from time.

City spurned a number of chances to kill off the game in the second half but the Londoners could not get back into the game and were leapfrogged in the table by the hosts, who moved third.

The match was an entertaining one with both sides keen to attack. City had a good early chance when Aguero played in De Bruyne but the Belgian drove his shot across goal.

Chelsea also went close after Tammy Abraham broke clear from a poor Mahrez pass and teed up Willian but the Brazilian fired past the far post.

The visitors enjoyed a spell in the ascendancy and Abraham curled a shot over from Fikayo Tomori which also missed the target.

The visitors were rewarded for their positivity when they claimed the lead after 21 minutes. Mateo Kovacic picked out Kante with a well-weighted ball over the top and the Frenchman took a touch before poking a shot under the advancing Ederson.

That prompted a strong response from the hosts and they were level within eight minutes as De Bruyne struck from the edge of the area, albeit with a slice of luck.

De Bruyne wrongfooted two defenders with a nice touch but was then fortunate as his shot took two deflections to deceive Kepa Arrizabalaga.

De Bruyne had a repeat opportunity moments later only to fire over but Mahrez stepped up to put City ahead with a fine individual goal.

The Algeria international cut inside from the left between two defenders and sent a low shot through the legs of Tomori and into the far corner of the net.

It might have got worse for Chelsea as Kepa gifted another chance to Aguero in front of goal but the Argentinian thumped his shot against the crossbar.

Manchester United’s teenagers dealt harsh lesson in Kazakhstan as Astana come from behind to secure Europa League victory

With United having already qualified for the Europa League round of 32, Solskjaer opted to leave a host of key players back in Manchester and take an 18-man squad largely made up of teenagers.

United had never travelled so far for a European tie and stand-in captain Lingard put their youngest-ever side for a major continental match on course for victory in Nur-Sultan.

However, already eliminated and previously pointless Astana grew into the Group L encounter, with Dmitri Shomko’s strike and an own goal from United debutant Di’Shon Bernard sealing a surprise victory for the hosts.

This match was not without positives and would have been a challenging trip even for an experienced group, given the six-hour time difference, distance travelled and temperatures reaching -22 degrees Celsius outside the roofed Astana Arena.

But Solskjaer will no doubt be frustrated by the way his side let a strong start slip after Lingard’s first goal in 10 months, especially as things would have been so different had Tahith Chong not missed an open goal moments before Shomko’s superb leveller.

Bernard inadvertently sealed previously pointless Astana a stunning win on a night that saw United give out six debuts, with an outfield starting line-up average age of just 20 years and 221 days.

Even with 36-year-old goalkeeper Lee Grant making his first start, the overall average was just 22 years and 26 days.

Considering the mixture of inexperience and rustiness, Solskjaer’s side equipped themselves well during a bright start.

Mason Greenwood stung the palms of the goalkeeper and by the 10th minute, the visitors were ahead.

Luke Shaw, making his first appearance since August, played in Lingard to rifle a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner from 20 yards, leading to cheers from all four corners of the ground.

The skipper was keen to add to his first goal since January, hitting narrowly wide having just blazed over following good work by Ethan Laird – impressing on his debut like Dylan Levitt.

Astana flickered into life midway through the first half and Dorin Rotariu wasted a glorious chance when ghosting behind the sleepy United backline, while Grant comfortably denied Abzal Beysebekov soon after.

Lingard saw a shot deflect over and Greenwood irritated team-mates by ignoring them to take a hopeful shot, with the teenager then irking the home fans by chipping Astana goalkeeper Nenad Eric with play halted for offside.

But Astana were proving a handful and pushed for a leveller after the break, with sloppy play nearly resulting in Bernard putting a clearance into his own goal.

United were just about holding firm and had a gilt-edged chance to put the game to bed in the 55th minute.

A smart one-two with Angel Gomes ended with Shaw turning and firing the ball across the six-yard box, where unmarked Chong somehow scooped over at the far post.

It was a dreadful miss that proved the evening’s turning point.

Astana’s leveller had been coming and it was a strike that Shomko will treasure, hitting a low effort past Grant.

United had little chance to restock by the time the perennial Kazakh champions were celebrating again, with debutant Bernard directing a cross into his own net at the near post seven minutes later.

Axel Tuanzebe helped the devastated debutant to his feet.

Ineffective Chong soon made way as D’Mani Bughail-Mellor made his United bow, with Astana continuing to look the bigger threat and Runar Mar Sigurjonsson just missed the chance to score a stunning strike against the club he supports.

Astana keeper Eric pulled off stunning saves to deny Gomes’ free-kick and then Greenwood as United fell to defeat on an evening that ended with Largie Ramazani and Ethan Galbraith coming on for their debuts.

Manchester United fan gives chief executive Ed Woodward a ‘wet willy’ in bar ahead of Europa League clash with Astana

Woodward was enjoying some downtime with friends ahead of the match against Astana when he was approached by a fan who lured him into a conversation, before licking his finger and sticking it in the former’s ear.

To Woodward’s credit he took the supporter’s odd behaviour well, with footage of the incident recorded by another fan in close vicinity then circulating on social media, and was seen walking away laughing as the culprit and his friends surrounded him.

The 48-year-old’s relationship with the United faithful has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, with many blaming him for the club’s poor business in the transfer market and a perceived lack of leadership.

Woodward’s trip to central Asia proved to be a rather frustrating one, as a youthful United side lost 2-1 to minnows Astana – who recorded their first win in the competition this season.

Speaking after the game, under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the positives from the fixture, where he handed six youngsters their first-team debuts.

Ethan Laird, Dishon Bernard and Dylan Levitt played the full 90 minutes at the Astana Arena, while three fellow academy graduates D’mani Mellor, Largie Ramazani and Ethan Galbraith came off the bench for their senior bows.

“You could see the way we dominated midfield, Jimmy [Garner] and Dylan playing together, it’s nice to see midfielders dominating the game,” he said.

“Dishon was so composed, Ethan was marauding down the right-hand side, especially in the first-half. So some of these have done themselves a good favour.

“You could see the crowd enjoyed the game, you could see from the dressing room [Astana] were happy for the win but I felt we played really well.

“We want to congratulate them for the win and they’ve been a fantastic host as well.”

Romelu Lukaku reveals the moment he knew his Manchester United career was over

The Belgian marksman was sold to Inter for £74million, with Solskjaer happy not to buy a replacement for him in the summer.

Lukaku told Solskjaer that he was keen to leave the club in April and said being put on the right side of United’s attack in a victory over West Ham convinced him it was time to move on.

But the former Chelsea striker says he has has no ill-feeling towards Solskjaer or United’s hierarchy.

“It was after the game against West Ham at home, Solskjaer decided to put me on the right wing, very wide,” Lukaku told Corriere dello Sport.

Unai Emery on the brink as Arsenal throw away one-goal lead to lose Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt

In front of a half-empty crowd, the Gunners produced a largely abject display as a chorus of boos rang out throughout the stadium upon the final whistle.

The Spaniard named a fairly strong side, recalling Granit Xhaka for his first appearance since he was stripped of the captaincy for swearing at supporters and naming Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in attack.

Aubameyang would put Arsenal ahead only for Daichi Kamada to strike twice in nine second-half minutes, having scored only once in his previous 27 appearances.

Officially, 49,419 tickets were sold but in truth it was the lowest attendance in the history of a stadium that opened in 2006.

With the sparse crowd unable to create any sort of meaningful atmosphere it was up to the Arsenal players to bring the game to life and they failed to do so once again.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown says the Premier League giants are heading towards relegation under Unai Emery after woeful Frankfurt defeat

By the end, it was a crop of Frankfurt supporters – officially banned by UEFA from attending the game – who were being heard over the home fans, plenty of whom were airing their grievances towards Emery.

Aubameyang headed a glorious chance wide in the early stages as Joe Willock got in the way of his captain.

Gabriel Martinelli then twice came close to opening the scoring, firstly capitalising on a rash Danny Da Costa clearance to fire at Frederik Ronnow before seeing his glancing header from the resulting corner cleared off the line.

Ronnow was on hand to prevent Bukayo Saka scoring as the half-hour approached, rushing from his line to block the winger’s attempted chip.

Emery’s experiment of deploying David Luiz as a defensive midfielder alongside the returning Xhaka ended prematurely when the Brazil international was forced off injured as the first half progressed.

Saka came close in the latter stages of the half but the deadlock was eventually broken by Aubameyang.

The skipper was picked out at the back post and his low shot bounced up off the boot of Ronnow and in off the crossbar.

Xhaka almost toasted his recall with a goal of his own but could only fire wide as he slipped before meeting Aubameyang’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts continued to create opportunities and almost doubled their lead moments after the restart, only for Willock to be denied by the sliding Frankfurt captain David Abraham.

Calum Chambers then blazed over the crossbar before Arsenal were made to pay for their profligacy.

On verra.

Shocked Kubica lost it ‘in a very nasty way’ in FP2

Williams’ Robert Kubica says he was “completely shocked” by his crash in the Brazilian Grand Prix FP2 session, insisting the mishap was caused by standing water on a kerb at the Senna ‘S’.

Kubica was looking forward to a productive afternoon after sitting out the morning practice session in which Williams reserve Nicholas Latifi took over his car.

The Pole had just started his first flying lap was exiting Turn 2 when his car suddenly snapped and veered off course into the barriers, Kubica’s day done and dusted.

Horner won’t put Albon’s crash in FP1 on his account

The bewildered Williams driver was initially at a loss to understand why he had lost control, but footage of the accident suggested the most plausible explanation.

“This was my first lap around here, I lost in a very nasty way the car, which I didn’t really understand,” Kubica said.

“But after reviewing, the Haas [of Kevin Magnussen] who was in front of me by a few seconds, he went off, over the kerb, and pulled out quite a lot of water.

“You can see when I approached with the front left tyre, I was lifting a lot of water. I was with the hard tyre and lost it completely in a nasty way.

“It’s frustrating because we need a bit of luck, it’s not an easy situation for us.

“I only understood it when I saw the video, otherwise I thought something had broke. But it didn’t break, there was no failure.”

Kubica ultimately put the incident down to unfortunate circumstances.

“It is never nice to lose free practice, it’s never nice to crash the car, but I think today was bad luck,” Kubica added.

“If I would be closer to him, I would see it. If I was a few seconds later, my engineer would have told me. Unfortunately, this is motorsport.
