Force India expects upgrades to deliver in China

Force India tested upgrades at the Bahrain Grand Prix which it expects to give the team a more obvious step forward at the next race in China.

A disappointing weekend in Bahrain saw both Force India drivers sustain front wing damage during the opening two laps, dropping them towards the back of the field. While the race ended without either driver scoring, deputy team principal Bob Fernley insists there were positive signs during the weekend, telling F1i a new set of upgrades produced encouraging results.

“The car is basically there, Nico [Hulkenberg] did a great job in qualifying so we know it’s there,” Fernley said. “We put some stuff on the car this weekend which was not necessarily optimal for Bahrain but will allow us to try it and get it all working so that when we go to China it should help us there.

“It’s delivered. As I say, it doesn’t necessarily give us what we would want to get as an advantage in Bahrain but it was an ideal time to test it. Mainly because the weather can be so risky in China, the last thing you want to be doing is testing new stuff on a wet Friday. So we go there now knowing that it all works.”

And Fernley believes Force India’s true potential has yet to be seen in the opening two races but points to a difficult spell during 2015 as an example of how the team can bounce back.

“We’ve had one weekend in Melbourne where we were fortunate to come out of it because we were looking really strong for a very good double points finish there, fifth or sixth or something like that with both cars. And then the red flag completely hit us so we lost that opportunity.

“Nico managed to pull back in to the points which we didn’t expect him to do, but that was again attrition, other people making mistakes. So we got away with Melbourne if you like to a degree when we should of done.

“In Bahrain there was just no coming back. These things happen, you’ve just got to take it over a 20-race program. We had the same thing last year if you remember in the middle of the season, we had Hungary [where both cars retired] and a couple of others, and then you pick it back up again. It ebbs and flows. So you’ve just got to dust yourself down.”

Twice Lucky: This Dubai Man Has Survived Sri Lanka Bombings As Well As 26/11 In Mumbai

A Hindi proverb Ja Ko Rakhe Saiyan, Mar Sake Na Koi(no one can kill the person who is protected by God) came literally true when a Dubai based Indian couple escaped blast in Sri Lankan capital Colombo last Sunday.

Sri Lanka was rocked by a series of blasts in Churches and hotel targeting mainly people observing prayers on Easter Sunday and the series of blasts left more than 250 dead and over 500 injured.

The couple was at Colombo’s Cinnamon Grand hotel which was one of the eight targets. Surprisingly, Abhinav had survived 26/11 Mumbai attack as well as he was in Mumbai in 2008.

Verstappen looking to extend points streak in Sochi

Max Verstappen says he is targeting “another good result” in this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix, after the Toro Rosso ace secured three points finishes in as many events this year.

The Dutchman currently occupies ninth position in the Drivers’ standings, having claimed 10th in Australia, sixth in Bahrain, and eighth in Shanghai a fortnight earlier. His first visit to Sochi last October resulted in a competitive P9 in qualifying followed by a top 10 appearance in the race.

The 18-year-old is now keen to build on Toro Rosso’s promising start in 2016.

“After a strong race in China, I hope for another good result in Sochi,” Verstappen said. “The first thing I remember from Russia is my good qualifying [last year]. It’s always good to start the race from the highest spot possible and starting P9 in Russia meant already being in the points positions.

“Even though we unfortunately didn’t have a good start in the race: I arrived to Turn 1 and [Nico] Hulkenberg spun in front of me, we collided in Turn 2 and I had a puncture. It wasn’t great, as I had damage on the car and it all got very tricky but I still tried to do my best.”

While team-mate Carlos Sainz bemoans Sochi’s “wide” run-off areas, Verstappen insists the former Winter Olympic Games venue presents drivers with a genuine challenge.

“The track itself has many 90 degree corners, so it’s difficult to find the right line. Turns 13 to 16 are a complicated section of the track, as they are all slow-speed corners and if you get the positioning right you can gain a lot of lap-time there.

“My favourite part of the track is Turn 3 because it’s flat out and goes past all the Olympic flags, which you can see when you arrive to Turn 2.”

This weekend’s Russian Grand Prix will also see ex-Manor F1 boss John Booth take up his new position as director of racing at Toro Rosso.

Palmer optimistic of pulling off Shanghai surprise

Jolyon Palmer is hoping that the third time will prove the charm, and that Shanghai will enable him to break into the top ten at last and score points for Renault in the process.

Palmer finished just one place short in his maiden Formula One appearance in Australia, and then suffered a hydraulic pump failure before he could take the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix. But with the teething problems behind him, Palmer believes that China will be a different story altogether.

“We should have it all addressed for China,” he said. “The car has a well-balanced baseline and all we need is a little bit more performance. This is exactly what we have coming in the future, so every thing’s good.

Although this will be his first race at the Shanghai International Circuit, Palmer does already have some experience of the Hermann Tilke-designed 3.388-mile, 16-turn circuit thanks his time spent as Lotus test and development driver in 2015.

“I drove it last year in FP1 so I have a reasonable idea about the track,” he said. “You can get pretty low temperatures there so there’s the challenge of long corners too, which means front tyre graining. It’s almost the exact opposite of Bahrain, which is rear limited.

“There are some very technical corners, like turn one that is pretty unique as it goes pretty much back on itself, on to the back straight, which is another long corner that induces graining on the front left.

“The straight is very long and there’s DRS so in the race you’ll be looking to be as close as possible to the car ahead to slipstream and make a move, then you’re considering your braking point.

“It’s one of the longest straights on the calendar and it’s right at the end of the lap,” he added. “You really need to maximise the potential; you can’t afford to mess it up.

“The middle sector is more about high speed corners where it’s not so easy to follow the car ahead but the corner itself provides the challenge. There’ll always be the element of looking after the tyres in Shanghai.”

LIVE: Hungarian Grand Prix – FP3

Follow live coverage of the final practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix with F1i’s live commentary page.

Mercedes set the pace on Friday but saw its advantage cut to 0.6s by Daniel Ricciardo in FP2 as Red Bull started to show some of its pace. Red Bull is expected to be a threat in Budapest but so far Mercedes has shown it has enough in hand.

Lewis Hamilton will be looking to make up for lost time in final practice after he crashed early in the second session on Friday. Hamilton lost control at Turn 11 and hit the tyre barrier hard, damaging the left-hand side of his car. Though he limped back to the pits, Hamilton’s session was over after four laps, leaving him with work to do in FP3.

Ferrari also made improvements between the first two sessions but Sebastian Vettel was the best part of a second off Nico Rosberg’s best time in FP2, with the Scuderia needing to find more pace over one lap ahead of qualifying.

McLaren was the fourth quickest team in both Friday sessions – with Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button seventh and eighth respectively – but Williams expects to make a step forward on Saturday. Valtteri Bottas will evaluate a new floor in FP3, which the Finn will race if it performs as expected. Williams will have a second floor ready for Felipe Massa in Germany.

F1i will bring you live commentary of all the action as it happens from the Hungaroring, while you can also add your comments and questions below the live feed.
