Jensen named temporary manager with Denmark in crisis

Ahead of a meeting with Slovakia, the Danes may be forced to use uncapped players from lower leagues or even futsal professionals

Denmark have named John Jensen temporary first-team coach for Wednesday’s friendly with Slovakia, as an unspecified squad of players heads to Bratislava.

Plans for Denmark’s games with Slovakia and the UEFA Nations League clash with Wales have been thrown into disarray by a dispute between the Danish Football Association (DBU) and the senior players.

A row over commercial rights has led to concerns the squad will boycott the coming matches, meaning the DBU could risk a substantial UEFA fine and suspension from tournaments if the games are forfeited.

With head coach Age Hareide also involved in the dispute, Denmark have decided to place former midfielder Jensen in charge of the team for Wednesday’s game, which could reportedly include uncapped players from lower leagues or even futsal professionals.

“We must hold the two international matches to avoid fines of millions and the possible exclusion of the national team for several years,” said DBU’s team manager Kim Hallberg.

“On behalf of the DBU and Danish football, I am pleased John Jensen has taken on the hard task of being coach for both matches.”

Former Arsenal man Jensen added: “When I say yes to help here, it’s because I feel very strongly for the national team as an institution, and because I think the most important thing must be that the games will be played.

“I just hope to get us through the two matches and that the parties find a solution as soon as possible.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Christian Eriksen called for a truce between the DBU and the Spillerforeningen, the Danish footballers’ union, so Denmark could play the Slovakia and Wales matches at full strength and avoid serious repercussions.

Last year, the women’s team boycotted a World Cup qualifier with Sweden over a pay dispute. The DBU was fined and warned Denmark could be excluded from any UEFA tournament if another match was cancelled in the next four years.

DBU communications manager Jakob Hoyer insisted this week the organisation did not want to discuss a new deal on the eve of matches and be forced into an unsatisfactory agreement.

“We do not want to negotiate so close to international matches,” he said. “That was what happened in 2015 and led to a historically poor national team agreement that has created so many problems.”

German stars Muller and Kroos rue missed opportunities after France stalemate

Germany could have bounced back from their World Cup woes by beating eventual winners France but missed late chances in Munich

Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos rued a host of missed chances as Germany were held to a 0-0 draw by France in their Nations League opener.

The previous two World Cup winners largely underwhelmed in Munich but it was the hosts – aiming to bounce back from their Russia 2018 humiliation – who came on strong in the closing stages.

Germany found France debutant Alphonse Areola in inspired form between the posts, though, as Muller erred in key positions and Matthias Ginter was stunningly denied at close quarters.

“I would have liked to win because we had such good scoring chances,” the Bayern Munich forward told ZDF.

Real Madrid’s Kroos produced a typically assured display in central midfield, completing all of his passes in the first half.

“We controlled the game well, didn’t allow any counter-attacks,” he added.

“What was disappointing was that, after some great chances, we didn’t score.”

Joachim Low’s side were knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup this summer after shocking defeats against Mexico and South Korea, four years on from lifting the famous trophy in Brazil.

The media backlash in the aftermath of the team’s performance has been severe, but they did manage to restore some national pride tonight against the country that managed to win the competition back in July.

Germany are back in action on Sunday when they host Peru in a friendly at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, Meanwhile, France will play the second game of their Nations League campaign on the same evening against the Netherlands.

'I believe in this club' – Tottenham's Lucas Moura wants to deliver more success

The Brazilian claims winning EA Sports’ Player of the Month will spur him on to achieve more at with the Premier League side

Lucas Moura is confident he has plenty more to give following an impressive start to the season with Tottenham.

The Brazilian enjoyed a stellar August, scoring his first Premier League goal at Wembley before a double and a man-of-the-match showing at Old Trafford was enough to land him the EA Sports Player of the Month award.

The 26-year-old joined Spurs from Paris Saint-Germain in a reported €28 million (£25m/$32m) deal in January, but endured a slow start to life in the Premier League.

However, in the absence of Heung-Min Son on international duty with South Korea, Lucas has been given his chance by Mauricio Pochettino and has taken it with both hands, starting all four league games so far and scoring three goals.

The winger claims he will not be resting on his laurels, however, and is motivated to keep performing at a high level.

“The feeling is impossible to explain because I waited a long time for this moment. I need to enjoy it but also to keep working because I believe I have much more to give and I’m sure we will have a successful season because we can, and I believe in my team-mates, I believe in this club. I want to deliver much more,” he told Tottenham’s official website.

“I worked a lot and very hard for this moment and I think the team had a great month with great games. I’m so happy because I know it’s not easy to win this trophy and it was a great month for me and also for the team.

“For me, the Premier League is the toughest league in the world and to win a trophy like this, to be player of the month, it’s not easy. To be here now and to win this trophy gives me more motivation to keep working and to want more.

“I don’t have much to say but thanks to God and to share this with my team-mates and with my family, and to keep working because this is only the beginning. We have a lot more in front of us, so I need to keep working and doing my best.”

Tottenham host Liverpool after the international break in the Premier League at Wembley, with the Reds having picked up maximum points so far.

'Don't go crazy!' – Valverde counsels Alba after Spain snub

Jordi Alba has been told by Ernesto Valverde to focus on Barcelona duties, after he was left out of the Spain squad by Luis Enrique.

Ernesto Valverde has advised Jordi Alba to focus on Barcelona’s next match and not go “crazy” after being dropped from the Spain squad.

The left-back was omitted from Luis Enrique’s first call-up since he took over as permanent head coach from Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on the eve of the World Cup.

The decision to leave out Alba has prompted concerns about his long-term place with the national team, given he fell out of favour under Luis Enrique in his last season as Barca boss.

Valverde is not willing to discuss another coach’s decisions in public but wants Alba to concentrate on his duties at club level, starting with Sunday’s clash with Huesca at Camp Nou.

Asked how he would counsel the defender, Valverde told a news conference: “Well, the same as anyone: focus on the game without going crazy.

“It’s not a question for me. It’s the national team coach who calls up those who he thinks are the best.

“Just as I don’t like it when other coaches question my squads and my line-ups, I won’t talk about others.”

Valverde also refused to comment on Gerard Pique after the defender was reportedly charged with a driving offence.

Cadena SER claimed on Friday that the centre-back has been accused of driving without a valid licence, an offence which risks punishment by a fine, community service or a short prison sentence.

“I haven’t spoken to him and I prefer to do that before making any comments myself,” Valverde said.

“Those of us who represent a club have a private life and a public image, but I prefer to speak with him.”

CFL 2018: Mohun Bagan have taken a giant stride towards championship but East Bengal remain in the hunt

East Bengal’s loss to Peerless have given Mohun Bagan a boost in their title aspirations but the race is far from over…

Two former Mohun Bagan players Ansumana Kromah and Naro Hari Srestha were on target against East Bengal to dampen the title aspirations of the defending champions. Although East Bengal’s 2-1 loss to Peerless have definitely handed Mohun Bagan a major boost in the title race but to assume that the  Mariners have already got one hand to the trophy will be far-fetched.

Click Here: All Blacks Rugby Jersey

But as things stand Bagan have their fortunes in their own hands and they need to collect only four points from their remaining two fixtures against Calcutta Customs and Mohammedan Sporting respectively. Whereas, East Bengal must win their remain two matches and also hope that their local rivals do not collect more than three points from two games. If both teams finish on equal points then the party with a healthier goal difference will clinch the championship. The Mariners are ahead in this department as well, as shown in the table below.

Teams  Matches Won Draw Lost    GD Points
Mohun Bagan         9    7      2     0   +18     23
East Bengal         9    6      2     1   +12     20

But looking at the fixtures the Red and Gold fans are hoping that their arch-rivals have a good chance of slipping up. It must be noted that East Bengal dropped their first points of the league campaign against a gritty Customs side. Subhash Bhowmick’s men created a host of chances but their profligacy in front of goal cost them the two points. Samuel Kane stood as a brick wall in defence and weathered the storm neutralizing the likes of Gagandeep Bali and Mahmoud Al Amna. Goalkeeper Suvam Sen also had a brilliant day at the office as he made numerous saves to snatch a point from the Kolkata giants. They have let in only six goals in seven matches which further indicates their defensive strength.

Interestingly Kane was signed by Mohun Bagan on loan from Customs just before the Super Cup. But the Ghanaian centre-back failed to impress Sankarlal Chakraborty and was sent back without playing a single game. This would definitely act as an extra motivation for Kane to put in a good shift against Aser Dipanda and Henry Kisekka. Customs’ striker Eze Stanley also has a few tricks up his sleeves and he remained a whisker away from scoring against East Bengal. He dribbled past Kinshuk Debnath and Mehtab Singh and unleashed a venomous shot at goal which was negotiated brilliantly by Rakshit Dagar.

So Calcutta Customs have the potential to script another upset and Bagan must remain vigilant of the threat posed by Rajib Dey’s men.

Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are yet to play Mohammedan Sporting who so far have had a disappointing season. They are currently placed sixth in the league table with 13 points from seven matches. Raghu Nandy’s men have been solid at the back but their inefficiency in front of the opposition goal sees them reeling behind teams like Peerless SC and Rainbow AC in the league table. Princewill Emeka has once again found his scoring boots which will be a welcome relief to Nandy.

Meanwhile, the striker has thrown an open challenge to Johnny Acosta after scoring a brace against West Bengal Police and their duel will be something to look forward to when East Bengal face Mohammedan on September 11. If the Black Panthers eke out a favourable result, then East Bengal’s title challenge will fall flat on its face.

If both the title contenders manage to bag full three points on matchday 10 then the championship will be decided on September 18 when Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will kick-off at the same time. Mohun Bagan will take on Mohammedan at Yuvabharati Krirangan whereas East Bengal will lock horns against FCI at their home ground. If Bagan wins or draws then they will be crowned champions irrespective of the result in Maidan. But if they slip against Mohammedan and East Bengal manages to win by a big margin against FCI then the ASEAN Cup winners will romp to their ninth successive CFL title.

On careful consideration of all the possible scenarios, it must be said that Mohun Bagan look to be in pole position to thwart East Bengal’s juggernaut and claim their 30th CFL title.

Bolt's Mariners trial put on hold as sprint king heads to Europe

Central Coast Mariners triallist Usain Bolt will leave Australia on Sunday, spending a week abroad for an event in France.

Usain Bolt has been granted a short break from his trial with the Central Coast Mariners due to a pre-arranged commitment in Europe.

Sprint king and eight-time Olympic champion Bolt will leave Australia on Sunday, spending a week abroad for an event in France.

Bolt is on an “indefinite” trial with A-League side the Mariners as the 32-year-old Jamaican attempts to fulfil his dream of playing professional football.

“After completing his first three weeks of training with the Central Coast Mariners, the club wishes to advise media that Usain Bolt will be abroad from Sunday, 9 September to Sunday, 16 September for a previously planned commitment,” the Mariners said in a statement.

“This commitment was agreed between Usain Bolt and the Central Coast Mariners before his training period commenced with the club.”

Bolt made his debut for the Mariners more than a week ago, coming off the bench in the team’s 6-1 victory over a Central Coast Select XI in Gosford.

He has previously spent time training with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stromsgodset.

Wall Street has been gambling with student loan debt for decades

Student loan debt burdens 44 million people in the United States. However for CEOs of student loan companies, or investors on Wall Street, student debt is a lucrative commodity to be bought and sold for profit.

Corporations such as Navient, Nelnet, and PHEAA service outstanding student debt on behalf of the Department of Education. These companies also issue Student Loan Asset-Backed Securities (SLABS) in collaboration with major financial institutions like Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, and Goldman Sachs. For these firms and their creditors, debt isn’t just an asset, it’s their bottom line.

Investors holding SLABS are entitled to coupon payments at regular intervals until the security reaches final maturity, or they can trade the assets in speculative secondary markets. There is even a forum where SLABS investors can anonymously discuss their assets and transactions, free from unwanted public scrutiny.

Yet the financialization of student debt is almost never reported on in the media. There is little public awareness that when student borrowers sign their Master Promissory Notes (affirming that they will repay their loans and “reasonable collection costs”), their debts may be securitized and sold to investors.

The history of SLABS

SLABS resulted from specific federal policy decisions. On November 27, 1992, the Securities and Exchange Commission adopted Rule 3(a)(7) of the Investment Company Act of 1940, which allows companies who issue asset backed securities to be exempt from the legal definition of an “investment company.” This exemption permits companies to avoid asset registration fees and regulatory oversight – making it profitable for student loan companies (among others) to issue securities, which effectively created the market for SLABS. In total, $600 billion worth of SLABS have been issued, with $170 billion worth still outstanding.

There are two main types of SLABS: those backed by loans made by private lenders, and those backed by loans made through the Federal Family Education Loan program (FFEL). The majority of all student debt today is the $1.1 trillion loaned by the federal government through the Direct Lending program. While these loans cannot be securitized directly, they can be if borrowers consolidate or refinance their loans through a private lender.

Private student loan debt accounts for roughly $120 billion of the $1.6 trillion total outstanding debt. Companies such as SoFi refinance student loans, and have issued $18 billion in SLABS since their founding in 2011. These loans are highly favorable to lenders – as borrowers who default on private loans face greater consequences than those who default on federal loans.

FFEL loans are made by private lenders that are guaranteed by the federal government if borrowers default, which incentivizes riskier lending. Although Congress ended the program in 2010, there are still roughly $280 billion of FFEL loans outstanding, and the largest firms such as Navient and Nelnet retain FFEL loans in their portfolios and have continued to issue FFEL-backed SLABS.

The next bubble?

Over the past few decades, student loan companies and Wall Street have amassed record profits. Meanwhile, $1.6 trillion of student debt is crushing generations of Americans by delaying home ownership, causing generational wealth to decrease, and contributing to widespread depression and even suicide. Since the ironically-named Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, student debt is virtually impossible to discharge in bankruptcy.

The highest level of SLABS issuance occurred between 2005 and 2007 – while falling sharply during the 2008 financial crisis. Could a future recession lead to a similar breakdown in the SLABS market?

Parallels to the reckless and illegal actions of Wall Street with Mortgage-Backed-Securities (MBS) that led to the global financial crisis a decade ago may trigger similar alarm bells. Nonetheless, there are important differences between SLABS and MBS.

First and foremost, student loans cannot be collateralized. With MBS, the loans were collateralized by the house or property being purchased, but the “equity” in student loans is the borrower’s future expected earnings, which are difficult to quantify. Secondly, the overall market for SLABS is a fraction the size of the MBS market before the financial crisis. Finally, because of federal guarantees for FFEL loans and the 2005 bankruptcy laws, it is uncommon that the student loan companies will lose the value of their underlying investment, even when trends are showing that students are increasingly unable to pay their loans.

While SLABS may not pose the same level of systemic threat to the global financial system that MBS posed, there are legitimate concerns that this market poses serious systemic risks.

Navient is the largest student loan servicing company and the largest issuer of SLABS. In filings with the SEC, Navient acknowledges the following risk factors: “An economic downturn may cause the market for auction rate notes to cease to existHolders of auction rate securities may be unable to sell their securities and may experience a potentially significant loss of market value.

Due to the “securitization food chain”, if Navient or other SLABS issuers and holders experience a significant loss of revenue, they could default on their obligations – triggering negative consequences for Wall Street firms that market these securities to investors and supply credit to the greater public.

There are a few different ways this could happen. SLABS are created in a way that minimizes risk by spreading it around, but if significant numbers of student debtors default on their loans, the securities could lose their value if rating agencies downgrade them. Another possibility is that federal bankruptcy reform could favor student borrowers – which would certainly affect the market for SLABS.

Some Democratic presidential candidates have proposed significant policies to cancel student debt – Bernie Sanders’ plan would cancel all $1.6 trillion of outstanding student debt, while Elizabeth Warren’s plan would cancel up to $50,000 of student debt for 42 million Americans. These policies would make it less likely that the SLABS that have been issued would ever fully pay out, especially given that many of them will not reach their final maturity for decades.

Debt strikes

The student debt crisis is symptomatic of an unsustainable capitalist system. In the past several decades, the securitization of debt has become central to economic growth, but at what cost? As economist Michael Hudson has argued, “debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid”, and the insistence of creditors to collect on those debts can trigger social unrest.

As the rational discontent of younger generations continues to grow, catalyzed by a lower quality of life than older generations, the accelerating climate crisis, and insurmountable student debt – activists may choose to utilize “the power of economic withdrawal.”

Rather than endure the Sisyphean burden of unpayable debt, young people could exploit the vulnerabilities of the SLABS market via debt strikes or boycotts, as advocated during the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011. Fear about the consequences of default may keep American student debtors from organizing such a strike, but greater public awareness about SLABS and the acceleration of present crises may incite more radical action.

“For thousands of years, the struggle between rich and poor has largely taken the form of conflicts between creditors and debtors”, writes David Graeber in his comprehensive 2011 book Debt: The First 5000 Years. “By the same token, for the last five thousand years, with remarkable regularity, popular insurrections have begun the same way: with the ritual destruction of the debt records-tablets.”

Activists concerned about student debt should ask themselves: what would such a symbolic protest look like in the United States today, and could it become popular enough to pose a significant threat to the status quo?

Family of teen killed in car crash launches legal action against UK Foreign Office

Harry Dunn’s family spokesman, Radd Seiger, told CNN on Thursday they will be issuing a letter of claim about what they call “unlawful” advice given by the Foreign Office to Northamptonshire Police.

###

They will argue the Foreign Office’s “decision to advise Northamptonshire Police that the driver had the benefit of diplomatic immunity was unlawful,” Seiger said.

###

Dunn, 19, was killed in August outside a Royal Air Force station controlled by the US Air Force. UK police say he was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling on the wrong side of the road.

###

In a statement emailed to CNN, a Foreign Office spokesperson said it will be responding “to any legal action in due course.”

###

“We have done everything we can properly to clear a path so that justice can be done for Harry’s family,” the spokesperson added.

###

The family also argues that Anne Sacoolas — the US diplomat’s wife accused of being involved in the collision outside RAF Croughton in England — never had diplomatic immunity.

###

According to Northamptonshire Police, Sacoolas claimed diplomatic immunity in the aftermath of the crash that killed Dunn and left the country three weeks later.

###

Sacoolas apologized via her attorney for the “tragic mistake.” Police say their investigation is not yet complete.

###

The decision to launch legal action came after Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told lawmakers in the House of Commons on Monday that the government was made aware of Sacoolas’ plans to leave England.

###

“We were made aware, I think it was a day or two before, and we registered our strong objections,” Raab told Parliament, adding “it would have been unlawful to arrest her under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

###

A Foreign Office spokesperson reiterated in its statement to CNN that Sacoolas had diplomatic immunity under the convention.

###

Seiger said the Dunn family has “now realized that there are major problems with (the Foreign Office’s) version of events” and that the legal team will be led by Geoffrey Robertson.

###

Dunn’s parents met President Donald Trump when they traveled to the United States earlier this month, however they said they were left feeling “extremely angry” and as though they had been “taken advantage of.”

###

The family said Trump surprised them with the “bombshell” news that Sacoolas was in an adjoining room. Photographers were waiting in the wings, said a family spokesman, who described the encounter as an ambush.

###

They did not meet with the US diplomat’s wife and said they will do that only after she has returned to Britain to face the legal system.

###

The family said Trump has not promised to return Sacoolas to the United Kingdom.

###

The US President said he understands the Dunn family’s anger and called it a “tragic accident.”

###

“It happens in Europe as the roads are opposite,” Trump said. “It’s tough if you’re from the United States. You do make that right turn when you are supposed to make a left turn. The roads are opposite. She says that is what happened. That happens to a lot of people, by the way.”

Boris Johnson’s election call is an admission he’s run out of Brexit options

Despite not having a parliamentary majority, his brand new legislative agenda has just been approved by the House of Commons. Instead of popping open the champagne and getting ready to crack on with governing, Johnson is gearing up for an early general election.

###

On Thursday afternoon, the Prime Minister said that he would give lawmakers more time to scrutinize his Brexit deal, but only if they agreed to an election on December 12. “If they genuinely want more time to study this excellent deal they can have it — but they have to agree to a general election on December 12,” he said in an interview with the BBC.

###

A formal motion requesting the vote will be placed before Parliament on Monday. It will be Johnson’s third request for an election, and it stands considerably more chance of being granted than the previous two.

###

Much has happened in Brexitland of late. Having failed to get his deal approved by Parliament on Saturday, Johnson was forced to ask the EU for an extension to the Brexit process beyond October 31, to avoid the UK leaving without a formal deal.

###

The main opposition Labour Party had previously stated that it would only go along with an early election if the chance of a no-deal Brexit, accidental or otherwise, was ruled out. Party officials confirmed to CNN earlier this week that this was still its position. If the EU agrees to a lengthy extension, that fear falls away.

###

In the aftermath of the Queen’s Speech vote, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn doubled down on his long-held party line that they want “no-deal off the table.”

###

“I’ve been calling for an election ever since the last one because this country needs one in order to deal with all the social injustice issues. But no-deal must be taken off the table,” Corbyn said.

###

But there’s no guarantee that opposition lawmakers will support Johnson’s election call. After all, Johnson has working majority of minus 40. Why go along with the Prime Minister’s plan when his position is so weak?

###

“Parliament has got a dangerous Prime Minister in a cage and Parliament would be wise to keep that dangerous Prime Minister in a cage at least until we remove some of his teeth, if not all,” said the Scottish National Party’s deputy leader in Westminster, Angus MacNeil.

###

Johnson’s desire for an election has been the worst-kept secret in Westminster for months. Since taking office he’s taken every opportunity to show voters that he’s the man trying to get Brexit done, if only that pesky Parliament would stop blocking him. It’s a message that’s working, if the opinion polls are to be believed.

###

However, a great deal could change between now and December 12. For example, the opposition parties could decide that instead of voting for Johnson’s election, they instead bring his government down in a vote of no confidence. And of course, by that point, Johnson might have broken his campaign promise to get Brexit done by October 31.

###

Johnson will no doubt prefer any election to take place after Parliament has passed his Brexit deal and formally left the EU.

###

That’s why his Queen’s Speech win was the very definition of a hollow victory. It passed with the support of former Conservatives that Johnson himself expelled from the party and the Northern Irish DUP. The latter has already called his Brexit deal worse than Theresa May’s and the former cannot be relied on to get anything through Parliament — including his deal.

###

So, with his Brexit plans in tatters and time running out, Boris Johnson appears to have finally realized something that’s been painfully clear to others for months: However impressive getting a new deal with Brussels might have been, the Prime Minister has very little control over how Brexit plays out.

39 bodies were found in a truck in England. Here’s what we know about the timeline

UK police appear to have established that the truck and its container followed two separate routes — coming together towards the end of the journey shortly before the grisly discovery.

###

Here’s what we know about the timeline so far, according to authorities in the UK and Belgium.

###

Sunday

###

The truck itself is thought to have entered Great Britain through the Welsh port of Holyhead on Sunday after traveling over from Ireland, according to Essex Police. Investigators believe the truck — which was registered in Bulgaria in 2017 — originated in Northern Ireland.

###

The truck has not returned to Bulgaria since its registration, the country’s prime minister, Boyko Borissov, said on local television channel bTV on Wednesday.

###

Tuesday

###

On Tuesday, the container arrived at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge at 2:49 p.m. local time (1:49 p.m. UK time), before leaving for the UK that same afternoon, according to the preliminary findings of Belgian prosecutors.

###

Wednesday

###

The container entered the English port of Purfleet in the very early hours of Wednesday. Essex Police believe it arrived shortly after 12:30 a.m. Belgian officials said the container arrived from Zeebrugge at midnight.

###

This is where the truck picked up the container, according to Essex Police, who said the truck then left the port shortly after 1:05 a.m.

###

At around 1:40 a.m., ambulance workers called police to the Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays following the discovery of the 39 people. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities arrested the driver of the truck, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, on suspicion of murder.

###

He was later identified by a local councilor as Mo Robinson. Paul Berry, the local councilor for Armagh (the area where Robinson resides in Northern Ireland) told CNN he learned of the arrest after speaking with Robinson’s father. Police would not comment on the suspect’s identify on Thursday.

###

On Wednesday evening, the truck and trailer were moved to a “secure location” in Tilbury Docks, about a 20-minute drive from where the bodies were discovered.

###

Later Wednesday, police in Northern Ireland raided multiple properties, one of which has been identified by local residents as the home of Robinson’s parents. CNN was present at the parents’ home in County Armagh, southwest of Belfast, and witnessed officers going in and out of the house.

###

Local residents have told CNN that the parents have since traveled to England to support their son.

###

Thursday

###

Essex Police announced Thursday that the dead — 31 men and eight women — were all believed to be Chinese nationals. They also said that the truck driver would remain in custody for another 24 hours.

###

“This is an incredibly sensitive and high-profile investigation, and we are working swiftly to gather as full a picture as possible as to how these people lost their lives,” deputy chief constable Pippa Mills said.

###

In Belgium, the Chinese embassy “demanded the Belgian police conduct a comprehensive investigation.” Earlier in the day, China’s embassy in the UK said it was sending personnel to the scene of the investigation “to verify relevant information.”

###

On Thursday evening, Essex Police said the first 11 victims were transported to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for postmortem examinations.

###

This story has been updated to correct the number of women found in the truck container.
