Wagner used to be in Schalke’s ‘enemy camp’ having been in charge of rivals Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team from 2011-15.

Schalke have had a bad season in the Bundesliga, currently lying 15th in the table but are safe from relegation with two games to play.

Arsenal transfer news: Mesut Ozil REJECTED move to Paris Saint-Germain in January – reports

But the Ligue 1 champions are set to snare another Premier League midfielder this summer, with Ander Herrera set to leave Manchester United.

Ozil has struggled to establish himself in Unai Emery’s first team plans this season, often missing games through illness or injury.

The German retired from international duty in the summer after the World Cup in order to focus on his Arsenal career.

And, according to French website Paris United, the 30-year-old even rejected a winter move to Paris in order to do so.

The report claims Herrera’s free transfer from United is ‘imminent’ as Thomas Tuchel looks to strengthen his midfield.

QPR appoint Mark Warburton as Steve McClaren’s successor on two-year deal

The 56-year-old succeeds Steve McClaren, who was sacked last month after a run of just one win from 15 Sky Bet Championship games.

Warburton, who has agreed a two-year contract at Loftus Road, told the club’s website: “I am delighted and privileged to be managing this club.

“When I spoke to QPR they were very clear. They have a solid plan and know what they want. They have a long-term outlook and that appealed to me immediately.

“I am excited about the challenge that lies ahead.”

Warburton has been out of work since he was dismissed by Nottingham Forest in December 2017, but QPR will be hoping he can replicate the job he did a few miles down the road at Brentford.

The 56-year-old moulded a group of young players – including James Tarkowski and Andre Gray – into a side that reached the Championship play-offs in 2015.

But he left at the end of that season having disagreed with the club’s decision to implement a new statistical modelling approach to transfers and recruitment.

At Rangers, Warburton won promotion to the SPL as well as the Scottish Challenge Cup in his first season, but he left in December 2016 and then had nine difficult months in charge of Forest.

Now back in west London, Warburton added: “I love seeing players who enjoy their football. I like players being brave in possession, understanding the first thought is to play forward and be positive.

Forward Heung-min Son is also in the starting XI after being suspended for the first leg in London. There’s no place in the squad for Harry Kane despite whispers he was in contention.

Liverpool fans are desperate to sign Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt this summer – ‘Come join your mate Virgil’

The Ajax defender has been excellent for club and country [Netherlands] this season and is the Amsterdam side’s captain aged just 19.

He has played a huge part in getting Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals, where they have beaten the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

He opened the scoring against Tottenham five minutes into the game with a towering header beyond Hugo Lloris and this has prompted Liverpool fans to demand their club to sign de Ligt up this summer.

However, their tweets may have beenb slightly premature as de Ligt and Ajax were unable to hold onto their three-goal advantage as Spurs superbly fought back to win the game 3-2 and go through on away goals.

If Liverpool are to put in a bid, they’ll have to fight off the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal if they’re to land him, according to various reports.

Liverpool hero Phil Neal wants Tottenham to beat Ajax to complete an all-English Champions League final

The Reds completed a stunning comeback against Barcelona to win 4-3 on aggregate to reach their second consecutive final.

Spurs must overcome a 1-0 deficit in their second leg against Ajax in Amsterdam to get to the final.

Neal, who won four European Cups with Liverpool, thinks any English team getting to the final is brilliant.

He told talkSPORT 2: “Personally, I would want Tottenham. English teams doing well in Europe, that’s what it is all about. There’s a big industry and we are talking about it now. You are living off it and so am I.

“The more teams the merrier and anything for English teams getting to a final is brilliant.”

Few gave the Reds a chance of progressing to the final after they lost 3-0 at the Nou Camp.

Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum both scored twice to complete a remarkable 4-3 aggregate victory.

Neal was part of the Liverpool side who beat St Etienne in the third round of the 1977 competition where they also needed to come from behind to win.

They were 1-0 down from the first leg after being outclassed in France.

Kevin Keegan drew them level early on but a precious away goal for the visitors meant the Reds needed two goals at Anfield.

Ray Kennedy got one before supersub David Fairclough scored the winner with six minutes left.

“But that overcharged that night we had with St Etienne. Well done to the boys. To beat Barcelona 4-0 is a dream come true.

“Sitting next to Ray Clemence last night, I was certainly quite tearful to hear them sing and the players to remain on the pitch was quite emotional.

“We’ve played so well in the league as well, it reminds me of our days when we were chasing doubles and trebles.”

‘Jordan Henderson was my No.1’ – talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham hails Liverpool captain’s display against Barcelona

Liverpool fought back from a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at the Camp Nou to win 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night thanks to braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum.

It’s a match that has been labelled by the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Phil Thompson as one of the greatest Anfield nights in the club’s history.

At the centre of the win was captain Henderson, who played a big part in the opening goal on seven minutes, forcing a smart save from Marc Andre ter Stegen before Origi knocked home the rebound.

Henderson has divided opinion in the past over his credentials as Liverpool captain but his efforts against Barca didn’t cause any divide.
