Vincent Kompany to become player-manager of Anderlecht after leaving Manchester City

The Belgian defender, 33, will leave City this summer following the club’s historic treble-winning season, ending 11 years of service.

And now he will return to the club where his professional career began, at the age of six, in Brussels.

He announced on his Facebook page: “I choose to be grateful for the past but remain ambitious and driven for the future.

“For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgium’s finest.

Manchester United transfer news: How Red Devils could look next season without Paul Pogba – but with Paulo Dybala and Kalidou Koulibaly

The Times claim Ed Woodward will entrust the Norwegian with a £250million transfer kitty in order to improve the current squad.

After a meek end to the season, Europa League football is heading back to Old Trafford.

The next two months will be crucial for the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ as he attempts to rebuild his fragmented squad.

Paul Pogba’s future in the north-west seems to be growing murkier everyday, with Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane poised to pounce.

Should the World Cup winner depart, expect David De Gea’s future come under intense scrutiny once again.

Another Real Madrid target, Spain’s No.1 had an indifferent season and reports suggest there are a number of targets being lined up to replace the shot-stopper.

The departures of both men before the transfer window slams shut on August 8 would certainly cause the already inflated transfer budget to swell to almost insurmountable levels.

Barcelona shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen is reportedly on the Red Devils’ shortlist to replace De Gea, should the former Atletico Madrid keeper return to Spain.

Likewise, Pogba’s possible departure could mean Newcastle United wonderkid Sean Longstaff is brought in.

While plenty may scoff at the thought of the flamboyant Frenchman being replaced by the 21-year-old from the Toon, Solskjaer has already reiterated his desire to bring in hard-working players so as to change the ethos of the club.

The Red Devils have also been linked with moves for two of the best players plying their trade in Italy. Kalidou Koulibaly has been linked with a move for some time now, with Jose Mourinho even reportedly considering a bid during his time in charge.

And the revelation Paulo Dybala is ready to leave Juventus has seemingly shunted United straight to the front of the queue.

After a spectacular campaign in both the Eredivisie and the Champions League, Hakim Ziyech is reportedly on Solskjaer’s radar with German publication Bild reporting a move could be made in the summer.

Manchester United news: Marcus Rashford postpones contract talks amidst worries over the club’s direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The striker has one year left on his current deal, although the club do have the option to extend it by another campaign.

Red Devils chiefs had hoped to tie their starlet, still only 21, to a long-term contract knowing if he leaves at the end of his current one the club would only be able to get a training compensation fee for the player.

But, according to The Sun, Man United’s implosion under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got Rashford considering his options.

With Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal all stumbling toward towards the final hurdle, the Red Devils threw away a top four spot and Champions League qualifications with a draw to Huddersfield Town and a defeat to Cardiff City, both already relegated, in their final two games.

These were just the tip of the iceberg with Solksjaer’s side struggling to find any kind of form after their Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain, resulting in two victories in 12 games.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool wonderkid’s assist record this season puts Manchester United star Jesse Lingard to shame

Sometimes you need to remind yourself the player is just 20-years-old and in just his second campaign as a starting first-team player.

He’s only getting better too and ended the Premier League season with five assists in his last four games as he did his utmost to hand the Reds the title.

It wasn’t to be for Liverpool, but Alexander-Arnold’s performances may well have secured him an England starting role at the UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal this summer.

He has already been called up to a preliminary Three Lions squad alongside Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard.

And Alexander-Arnold’s astonishing creativity this year has put the Red Devils ace to shame, especially given Lingard has been compared to Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta in the past.

Tottenham vs Liverpool: Ray Parlour explains why Dele Alli should be DROPPED for Champions League final

Moura sent Spurs to Madrid with a sensational second-half hat-trick in Amsterdam as Mauricio Pochettino’s men staged a dramatic comeback.

However, talismanic striker Harry Kane could recover from injury before the final on June 1 – leaving Moura’s place in the starting XI under threat.

And Arsenal legend Parlour argues it would be ‘disgraceful’ to leave him out.

“I would feel a little bit hard done by,” he told talkSPORT. “I’ve just scored a hat-trick away from home to get Tottenham through to the final and then you leave me out?

“It’s a disgrace if they leave him out. To score a hat-trick in a game as important as that was at Ajax.

“You can’t leave him out. You’d have to leave Dele out.”

Manchester United transfer news: David De Gea replacement ‘identified as Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen’

The Spanish goalkeeper is currently in protracted contract talks at Old Trafford as he demands a pay rise, despite having to take a cut due to the Red Devils’ failure to qualify for the Champions League.

De Gea wants the same terms as team-mate Alexis Sanchez, the Premier League’s highest-paid player, but it is believed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is unwilling to sanction this having seen the Chilean flop at Old Trafford.

This could see De Gea, 28, leave Man United on the cheap with Paris Saint-Germain contenders for his services as they plot Gianluigi Buffon’s successor.

He only has one year left on his current deal – an option exercised by the club – and holds all the cards having been the best player at Old Trafford for the last five campaign, despite a poor end to the current campaign.

United will have been diligently hunting for possible replacements and, according to the Daily Record, Cillessen is that man.

City are unsurprisingly strong favourites against a Watford side who finished 11th in the Premier League.

But underdogs Watford are out to cause an upset and crown their fine season with their first piece of major silverware.

Should the Hornets pull off a shock, they will secure qualification for the Europa League.

City beat Brighton while Watford saw off Wolves in the semi-finals to reach the historic final.

Watford’s only appearance in the final came in 1984, when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Everton, while City are five-time winners of the competition, with their last success coming in 2011.

City may be big favourites but boss Pep Guardiola is taking nothing for granted: “It is a cup final, anything can happen like a red card,.

“In one game, anything can happen. Normally the better team wins but a decision of the referee could make the difference.

“In the Premier League you have another chance and can be more relaxed, but this is completely different.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic given two-match violent conduct ban for grabbing goalkeeper by the neck

Ibrahimovic, 37, has also been fined for his actions from the 86th minute of last week’s 2-0 defeat by New York City FC.

The legendary Swede grabbed Sean Johnson, NYCFC’s goalkeeper, by the neck after the glovesman bumped into him in the penalty area.

The incident came after Chris Pontius fired the rebound over the bar when Ibrahimovic hit the crossbar.

Both players were shown yellow cards for their roles in the incident, though MLS have decided to suspend Ibrahimovic for two games following a review.

Ibrahimovic, the former Manchester United forward, has now been banned three times since moving to the United States. The first came last May for hitting Michael Petrasso of Montreal on the side of the head, while he was handed his second suspension after sitting out the MLS All-Star Game in August.

Santi Cazorla earns Spain recall for the first time since 2015 after impressing for Villarreal

But he has bounced back since returning to LaLiga, making 45 appearances in all competitions this season, with seven goals and helping the Yellow Submarine to the Europa League quarter-finals.
