Tottenham Hotspur: Fernando Llorente sent Spurs through to the Champions League semi-final so should the striker be given more credit?

His goal, bundled in from a corner and confirmed by VAR 17 minutes from time, would prove vital in sending Spurs through to a semi-final clash with Ajax.

It was his eighth goal of the season and while Llorente has not always been given credit by Spurs fans, he has contributed goals and assists when asked to deputise for Harry Kane.

Of course, Spurs are more potent when the World Cup Golden Boot winner is playing but, they have had to do without him twice this season and Llorente is the man they have turned to.

Liverpool’s awful record against Cardiff City will give Manchester City fans hope for Premier League title race

Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently top of the Premier League and into the Champions League semi-finals.

After comfortably dispatching Chelsea at home on Sunday, the Reds are potentially four games away from lifting their first league title since 1990.

Next up for the Merseysiders is a trip to relegation-threatened Cardiff City – a fixture the league table would suggest is a formality for the visitors.

But history tells a different story.

In 33 games against the Bluebirds since 1922, Liverpool have won just 13 games – a measly 39%.

Manchester United news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggests some players aren’t as good as they think they are

The Red Devils’ resurgence has been halted by five defeats in their last seven games, which have sent them crashing out of the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Solskjaer’s men are also struggling to make the top four and face Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea in the next eight days.

The Norwegian warns there is ‘no hiding place’ for his under-performing stars and issued a wake-up call ahead of the club’s run in.

“I’ve learned a lot about them over the months here now and you get to know them,” he said.

Chelsea news: Glenn Hoddle explains why Blues desperately miss John Terry after second-half collapse against Slavia Prague

The Blues booked their place in the semi-finals with a 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, giving them a seemingly comfortable 5-3 win on aggregate – although it was anything but.

Maurizio Sarri’s men, who took a one-goal advantage into the second leg, cruised to a 4-1 lead at half-time before they were stunned and made to work for the victory when Petr Sevcik struck twice.

Suddenly, anxiety spread throughout Stamford Bridge as the Blues defence continued to shake, with Slavia just two goals away from dumping Chelsea out.

‘I hope Nacho Monreal washed his hands’ – Arsenal fans speculate whether defender went to the toilet during Napoli match

However, this may not be the case for Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal, who rather bizarrely left the field of play during their second leg at Napoli.

Monreal left holding his stomach around the hour mark but was back on the pitch a few minutes later to complete the rest of the game.

His absence didn’t affect the Gunners’ form as they secured a place in the last four with a 1-0 triumph at the Stadio San Paolo, going through 3-0 on aggregate.

Harry Kane injury: Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino not ruling out striker’s return before end of season

Striker Kane sustained a significant ankle ligament injury against Manchester City last week, a similar knock to the one which kept him out for six weeks earlier this season, but Spurs confirmed on Thursday that he has begun his rehabilitation.

Pochettino would not put a timeframe on his likely return, only to say the England captain will do everything possible to make it back before the end of the season.

“Still we cannot say nothing,” he said. “We are going to assess him day-by-day, we’ll see.

“We’re not optimistic but you know Harry Kane and with Harry Kane all is possible.

“We’re not going to say he won’t play again or not, we are going to assess him day-by-day.”

Of course, Kane has a massive incentive to get back as quickly as possible after Spurs qualified for the Champions League semi-final for the first time in their history with a dramatic away-goals win at City on Wednesday.

After losing 4-3 on the night, they progressed with a 4-4 aggregate score on a memorable evening in Manchester.

Spurs were seconds from going through, then thought they had been dumped out when Raheem Sterling appeared to have scored in stoppage-time, only to enjoy a euphoric celebration when VAR ruled Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up to the goal.

The turnaround in emotions was an unbelievable sight as Tottenham players that were on the floor crestfallen were suddenly punching the air, while City, who celebrated as wildly as they did when Aguero won them the Premier League in 2012, were in despair.

Pochettino also revealed how he went from ‘thinking very bad things’ to being ‘alive again’.

“I didn’t want to watch because in that moment I take off my jacket and jumper and throw to bench and go to my seat and think very bad things,” he said.

“But in that moment I hear Jesus’ (Perez assistant manager) voice say, ‘Oh maybe it is offside, VAR is checking’, and in that moment I was alive again.

“I understand the situation on the City bench; from top of the world down, disappointed, that is unbelievable, the emotion we live last night was amazing.

“A very good end for us but I feel sorry when that situation happens because you can be on the other side and it is difficult when that situation happens.

Spurs do not get long to bask in their glory at the Etihad Stadium as they return there on Saturday lunchtime for a Premier League clash.

“You know that we left yesterday everyone is happy but a little bit tired too,” he added.

“We arrived (home) late, we didn’t sleep too much but the happiness allows you to feel strong and with energy, and of course now we’re thinking about the game on Saturday.

Liverpool news: Alisson Becker to officially become Reds’ number one next season and takes shirt number from Loris Karius

The goalkeeper was signed from Roma for £66.8million last summer.

He has since gone on to feature in all 34 Premier League games the club have played so far this season.

The 26-year-old also has the most amount of clean sheets with 18, two ahead of nearest rival Ederson.

The Brazilian has been a key part of the Premier League’s best defence with just 20 goals conceded all season.

Liverpool currently top the league by two points ahead of Manchester City, who have played one game fewer.

‘I hope Manchester City’s season doesn’t implode’ – Stuart Pearce fears for Premier League title race after Champions League exit

City crashed out of Europe in stunning fashion on Wednesday night, as Raheem Sterling saw his stoppage-time winner ruled out by VAR, which meant Spurs went through on away goals after drawing 4-4 over the two legs.

Fans were put through the wringer by their teams in a game packed with highs and lows, but eventually it was Tottenham who prevailed with three crucial goals at the Etihad.

It was a disastrous result for City manager Pep Guardiola, who was brought to the club three years ago primarily to help them lift the European Cup – his wait, and theirs, goes on.

Such a defeat has come at a pivotal time in their campaign – while hopes of a mythical quadruple are now over, a domestic treble is still on the cards.

The League Cup winners are one point behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race, but have a game in hand, and must look to win their five remaining games to beat the Reds to the crown.

They also still have a FA Cup final against Watford to look forward to on May 18.

Tottenham news: Mauricio Pochettino copies Diego Simeone crotch-grabbing celebration in dressing room after beating Manchester City in Champions League

His side progressed on away goals after their tie with Manchester City ended 4-4 on aggregate.

The thrilling second leg at the Etihad Stadium finished 4-3 to City and the home side had a goal chalked off in the final minutes through VAR, meaning Pochettino’s side went through.

Spurs had to do it without star striker Harry Kane, who was injured in the first leg.

Pochettino was clearly pumped up after the miraculous game and a video has been posted on Twitter that shows the Tottenham manager copying the Diego Simeone crotch-grabbing celebration.

He then slaps a whiteboard while the players celebrate in the changing room.

Simone did the celebration after Atletico Madrid’s opening goal against Juventus in the first leg of their last-16 tie in February.

He did it to show his team have ‘balls’ and they went on to win that match 2-0.

They could not progress to the next stage of the competition, though, as a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick saw Juve make a brilliant comeback.
