Why People Talk About Swaminathan Commission Report As Remedy Whenever There Is A Farmer Crisis

Farmers have always been at the centre of economic policies ever since India got independence. Their demands are seldom heard as they continue to protest against the incumbent governments. The current regime, too, is under tremendous pressure to make favourable policies for the farmers. With the Centre announcing an allowance of Rs 6000 per year to small and marginal farmers in the interim budget, the farmer distress has once again acquired the centre state.

Many farmer unions and experts have said that this allowance won’t bring any change whatsoever in the lives of the farmers, but would cost the exchequer Rs 75,000 crore. But will roughly Rs 17 a day help farmers to turn the tables on their shrinking fortunes they have been complaining about for decades?
